Talk between the lord Visnu and the sage Markandeya going to narrate the same. You better listen it from me





Vaishampayana said — 0 Janamejaya, lord Visnu who illumines his own form, performer of tapas, all powerful, devoid of lust or passions, immensely resplendent, valorous, eternal, thus observing the entire universe in the deluge of water, slept there covering the oceanic water. He is the lord, who is called imperishable Brahman by the people. He had slept there depending upon the pasts present and future.

The supreme tattva which has been recognised with Yajha-Purusa, and the other things known by the name of Purusa, they represent lord Hari — the Purusottama.

The Brahmanas who perform the yajnas are called the yajna — priests. Shri Hari had appeard in this forms in earlier times. The way he made them appear on earth, I am going to narrate yhe same. You better listen it from me.

The lord produced Brahma, the best singer of sama-gana from his mouth. Form both his arms he produced the sacrificial priest, and the priests reciting the mantras of the sacrifice.

The Brahmanas known as the Brahmancchamsi also emerged out of him. Prastota and Martravaruna were also created by him. Thereafter he created Prasasta — the first assistant of Hotri, besides Pratisthatri, the priest assisting the Adhvaryu.

O Bharata, the same lord created Pratihasta and Pata from the the belly. 0 son of the race of Bharata, he created from mind (high) Acchavaka and Nesta from the mind.

He created Agnidhra and Subramanya, relating to the yajna. He created Gravastata from the arms, and unneta, concerning the yajna.

Thus the Jagadisvara lord Hari, created sixteen Rtvajas for the performing Yajnas, who could discourse on the Yajnas.

He alone represents the Vedas besides being the yajfia - Purusa - the six angas, the Upanisads, the Vedas with their supplementaries represent his form alone.

When he was sleeping in the oceanic waters, at that point of time a surprising event happened, which was correctly visualised by the sage Markandeya, which has been heard (by us).

Markandeya, the great sage, entered as a youth in the belly of the lord and attained old age there itself. With the excellent lustre of the lord, Markandeya attained the age of thousands of years.

In this way, he, in the context of the pilgrimage entered the belly of the lord and visited all the places of pilgrimage, there itself. He visited there, the auspicious asramas, holy places, temples, countries, astonishing types of countries, and several types of temples. Then he took refuge in performing severe tapas engaged himself in the performing of japam and homa. He became very weak by so doing.

Thereafter, once, Markandeya slowly emerged out of the mouth of lord Visnu. Influenced with the power of Devamaya, he could hardly realise his coming out (of the belly of lord Visnu).

Emerging out of the mouth of lord, Makandeya was abruptly thrown into the oceanic waters, where he found darkness everywhere.

He therefore felt immensely panicky. He became doubtful about his life. But he felt delighted, with his audience with lord Visnu. He was filled with surprise.

Then the sage Markandeya, feeling extremely doubtful, started thinking in his mind. "Why am I worried at all? Am I confused or am I witnessing a dream?

Surely my feelings could be anything like worries, confusion, or a dream. Because such an unrelated and improper thing can never happen to be true.

The place, where, one cannot find the moon, the sun or the wind, the earth and the mountains have also been covered with water, then what type of world is this"? Thus having been plunged in water, the sage Markendeya stood up.

Then he found a person with a gigantic body sleeping in the oceanic water. He appeared like the clouds filled with rain water.

The said person was glittering with his lustre was emerging out of his body. Because of his serious nature, he appeared like being quite awake and he was breathing heavily like a serpent.

Looking at that person, the sage, Markandeya was surprised. But the moment he approached him to know about his reality, he again, entered the belly of the lord.

Again after his entering the body of the lord, the sage become stable somehow. He considered the event of the ocean as a dream and then he started roaming about here and there.

Like before he started wandering on earth. He also visited the places of pilgrimage on earth and the heaven.

The sage witnessed in the belly of the lord, hundereds of Brahmanas performing the yajna, besides the yajnas which were concluded with the giving of the enormous daksina, and the yajmanas engaged in the performing of the sacrifices.

The people of all Varnas including the Brahmanas were engaged the noble ways. The Brahmacarya and other asramas were diligently followed as prescribed in the scriptures.

The sage Markandeya wandered on the earth for a lakh of years; but he could find no way out of the belly of lord Narayana.

Then once he suddenly came out of the belly of lord Narayana. In the invisible and the terrific world, he found in the terrific ocean, which was covered with fog and found a child sleeping over the brench of a banyum tree.

He was filled with surprise and he stood there feeling anxious. But he could not approach the illustrious child.

Then he silently stood besides the child and thought," I have never witnessed such surprise earlier. With the flash of such a thought in his mind, he, under the influece of Devamaya, became doubtful.

Floating over the vast ocean of water, Markandeya was frightened due to fatigue. He felt the least peaceful there.

In the meantime, the lord1 in the form of a swan, spoke in the voice which was as deep as the clouds.

The Lord said — "0 son, don't be afraid you come near me, 0 patient sage Markandeya, you are still a child, therefore you are feeling fatigued.

Markandeya said — "Who is there to call me by the name, disregarding my tapas, the age of thousands of years?"

This practice is not in vogue among the gods even, even Brahma — the grand sire, recognise my long life. (He does not address me by name).

Who is the one, having no attachment for his life, who neglecting my great tapas, and inviting his death, called me by name?"

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, when the sage Markandeya thus spoke in anger, then again lord Visnu, spoke to his devotee, who had taken refuge with him, thus,"

Srll Bhgavan said — О son, I am your father, who has produced you, besides being the preceptor — Hrsikesa. I am the eternal Purusa, bestowing on you the long life. Why do you not come to me.

In earlier times, your father Angira, getting desirous of a son, and while performing tapas for the purpose, had adored me initially.

Then I bestowed you (Who were then known as) illustrious Maharsi Ghoresera resembling the fire to him, as a son.

Under these conditions, except the one who has not been separated from me, and living in hte ocean, cannot enjoy sports, what to speak of having the courage of having an audience with the Yogadharma Paramatma.

Vaisaihpayana said — О Janamejaya, on hearing this a ray of delight flashed over the face of Markandeya. His eyes blossomed with pleasure. He folded both his hands over his head.

Then the sage Markandeya hearing about his name and gotra from the mouth of the lord, bowed him in reverence with folded hands.

Markendeya said — О sinless one, you are sleeping in this ocean in the form of a child. I would like to well understand your this illusion.

O sinless Paramesvara possessing all the fortunes, dharma, glory, wealth, who are you? What is your popular name? I feel that you are some great personality (bhUtas) because no ordinary living being can stay here.

Shri Bhagvana said — I happen to be Narayana and the cause of the birth of the creatures having bodies. I am the creator of all the bhUtas and also destroyer of them all as Rudra.

I have been established over Indra as Sakra. I am Samvatsara, the lord of the seasons, I am the lord of yuga in each one of the yugas. I am also known as the changer of the yugas.

I represent all the living beings, all the gods, serpents Sesa, and also Garuda of all the birds.

I am the Virat-purusa, with thousand heads, I happen to be the same heaven or the sky, over which my foot prints are embassed. I am the sun god, yajna-Puruna, besides tapo-yajna, yoga-yajna, and the performer of the various types of yajnas. I am the fire god carrying havisya to the gods. I am also the Varuna, the protector of the aquatic animals and other living beings.

I am the Sanyasi well versed in the Brahman, who performs in the world, several anusthanas with spotless mind, in several births, controlling all their sense organs, and engage themselves in the performing of the yogic practices.

The one who has had an audience with the supreme soul of the world, I happen to be the same learned soul. I am the great yogi among the yogis who are well versed in the yogic practices. I am the destroyer of the living beings — known as Yama, and am also the killer of all the lokas.

I am action, the performance, the jiva, and bestower of the fruit of dharma to all. I dwell in all the living beings in a hidden form as a witness, besides being the eternal supreme soul illumined by the self resplendence.

I happen to be Prakrti, Purusa and Devata. I am dharma and tapas dwelling in all the people, besides being the god.

I happen to be the lord Hayagriva, who had protected the Vedas form the ocean. I am the cosmic order besides being the total truth. I am the sole Prajapati.

I am Samkhya as well yoga besides being the supreme position. I am adorable, Siva, besides being the lord of Vidyas.

I am Agni (the fire god), Vayu (the wind god), the earth, besides the sky. I am also the water, ocean, constellations, besides the ten direction I am the rainwater, the soma, the clouds, as well as the sun.

I am the ocean of milk, and the Badava fire. I am the samvartaka fire, and consume the water of havisya.

I am the ancient Brahman, I am the refuge of all. I am the cause of the origin of the past, present and future.

What is Visualised by you in the world, or hear and whatever is experienced by you, has been considered to be my form.

I had created the universe in earlier times and I shall do so even presently. You have a look at me. О Markandeya, I shall create the entire universe in each and every yuga.

O Markandeya, the entire universe represents my form. You should understand it. Now, you with the desire to have disconscions dharma should enter my belly and be comfortable.

Brahma too has been lodged in my body. The gods with Rishis can also be found in my belly. You should treat me as the visible form of the universe and the Paramatma the form of yoga and lord Visnu who cannot be defeated by others.

I represent the single letter mantri known as akara, three letter mantra, Tripad mantra as well as the Gayatri mantra. I am the one who makes me achieve trivrga i.e. dharma, artha and kama (besides the Moksa) being the supreme soul.

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, in this way the great sage Vyasa, has described the supreme tattva of vedanta - in the Puranas. Lord Balamukunda, the four of the universe, called Markendeya near him to allow him to enter his mouth and made him comfortable in his belly.

Thereafter, the sage Markandeya, having entered in the belly of lord Visnu, started wandering with comfort in order to adore the imerishable Paramatma.

In the ocean, which was devoid of the sun and the moon, the lord, taking to the form of a swan, being Aksara-Brahmana started roaming about slowly. Then on the arrival of the time of creation, he created the universe, including the astonishing types of creations.
