Description of the progeny of Daksa's daughters





Vaishampayana said — At that point of time Brahma who is the foremost among those well-versed in Brahman, stood up over the lotus seat and started meditating raising up both his hands.

He was illuminating with his resplendence removing darkness with the Soma. Brahma was well-versed in all the dharmas, at that point of time was shining like the sun with a thousand rays.

Thereafter Narayana, the bestower of welfare, being eternal, inconceivable, took to another form, divided himself into two forms of glorious, illustrious Yogacarya Narayana besides the excellent Brahmana Kapila — the teacher of Sarhkhya philosophy, and arrived there. Both the great souls, were the foremost of those well-versed in Brahman, powerful, and were engaged in self realisation. They were being eulogised by the Devarsis. Reaching there, both of them, discoursed Brahma on Brahman. Both of them were well-versed of the difference in Para and Avara, Purusa and Prakrti, or the cause and the karya (task). Several of the great Rishis adored them there.

Thus they spoke, "There are several lokas, therefore Brahma, who is the leader as well as the preceptor, is the best of all. He is the soul of the entire univese, besides being its prestige. He has the firm footings like Visva, Taijas, Prajha, and Turlya.

Listenening to the talk of both of them and reciting the three narration of bhuh, bhuvah and Svaha, Brahma, created the three lokas as is spoken by the Srutis which establish Brahman.

Thereafter lord Brahma, produced his mind born son named Bhu, who was unblemished. He had developed immense love for that son.

The first mind born son, asked Brahma, "O lord, tell me, what should I do for you?

Brahma said — О intelligent one, Brahma named Kapila and Vadarayana as Narayana should do what ever is possible by you.

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, with those words spoken by Brahma at that time, his son named Bhu developed a doubt, that there was none suprior to his father. Still he went to both of them and spoke with folded hands. I am a servent to both of you. Tell me, what should be done by me?

Paramesvara said — The truthful and eternal Brahman, have eighteen pasas with them. (To enable him to himself get relieved of these pasas the sat and amrta tattva, should be meditated upon by you constantly.

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, listening to his words, ВЫ — the mind born son of Brahma, proceeded towards the north and reaching there, he with his divine vision achieved the Brahma-bhava.

Thereafter lord Brahma — the intelligent one, again mentally created another son named Bhuvar.

He also spoke to Brahma his father the same words, "What should I do for you?" Then at the command of Brahma, he appeared before the earlier two Brahmas (Kapila and Narayana).

Reaching before both of them, he also achieved the supreme position.

With his departure too, he produced a third son named Bhurbhuvar, who was well versed in attaining liberation (moksa).

He also attained the dharma of his ancestors, and achieved the same position. In this way all the three sons of Brahma, were discoursed by the benevolent Mahatmas — Kapila and Narayana.

Accompanied with the three sons of Brahma, lord Narayana Yatlsvara and Kapila, achieved their own forms.

When both Kapila and Narayana were liberated achieving their own forms, then Brahma who performed the hard tapas, again started performing severe tapas.

Then Brahma, while meditating alone, could not absorb himself in the same, then he produced a wife with auspecious symptoms, who formed half of his body.

From the point of view of tapas, resplendence, and discipline, he had created a wife totally suitable to him who was competent enough to create the universe.

Then Brahma, who led the life of a recluse, stared enjoying her company. At that point of time, he created all the Prajapatis, the oceans, besides the rivers.

Thereafter Brahma created three footed Gayatrl — the mother of the Vedas. Thereafter, he composed all the four Vedas which emerged out of Gayatrl.

Thereafter Brahma, also created for himself numerous sons, who could create the universe, who were all Prajapatis. All the lokas emerged out of them.

His first son was known by the name of Visvesa. He was a great ascetic. Thereafter he created Dharma — his second son, who was the best of all the asramas and auspicious.

Thereafter, Brahma created Daksa, Marlci, Atri, Palastya, Pulaha, Kratu, Vasistha, Gautama, Bhrgu, Angira and Manu.

These famous Rishis are known to be the forms of Atharvan. These thirteen sons of Brahma, are known Maharsis. Their dynasties are being described.

О Bharata, let you meet with welfare. Aditi, Did, Kala, Danayu, Simhika, Mani, Prabodha, Suraksa, Krodha, Vinata and Kadra, were the twelve daughters of Daksa- Prajapati, which represent twenty seven illustrious constellations. They are also the daughters of Daksa.

The influential Kasyapa was the son of Kasyapa, who created by means of tapas. These twelve daughters of Daksa were married by him to Kasyapa.

О Janamejaya, the auspicious daughters like Rohinl and others were married by Daksa to a Vasu known by the name of Soma.

In earlier times the five auspicious girls, who could move at will, were produced by Brahma in earlier times and were known by the names of Laksmi, kirti, Sadhya, Visva, and the goddess Marutvati.

О Bharata, let you meet with welfare, the religious minded Brahma (Daksa) married his five auspicious daughters to Dharma.

Brahma, had a wife named Surabhi, who could take to any form at will. She taking to the form of a cow appeared before Brahma.

Thereafter, Brahma, united with Surabhi, for the creation of cows on earth.

He produced twelve issues sons from her womb, whose bodies were well built, were religious minded had the respledence of the evening clouds besides being illustrious like the fire.

While crying they ran to Brahma. Because of their running and crying, they came to be known as Rudra.

They were known by the names of Nirriti, Sarpa, Ajaikapada, Mrgavyadha, Pinaki, Dahana, Isvara, Ahirbudhnya, Kapali, Aparajita, and the illustrious Senani.

A bull was also born of the same Surabhi. Besides the seeds grown without sowing black gram, watered vegetables, paddy, barley etc, he goats, calves, excellent nectar, as well the osadhis all emerged out of Surabhi.

Kama was created by Dharma out of the womb of Laksmi, while Sadhya produced the Sadhya gods. Surabhi the wife of Brahma, also produced Bhava, Prabhava, and lsan. Arundhati, Visvavasu, Baladhruva, Vijnata, Mahisa, Tanuja, Matsara, and Vibhuti were all born from Surabhi.

The goddess Sandhya who is worshipped the world over, following Indra, gave birth to poison and Nagas or serpents as sons.

(Surabhi was also the name of one of the wives of Dharma. The same Surabhi gave birth to Dharma first, the immortal Dhruva-second, Visvavasu-third, Somesvara -fourth, Parbat,-fifth, Yogendra-sixth, Vayu - seventh, and Nirrti- a vasu. Dharma thus produced sons from his wife named Surabhi.

It is heard that Dharma produced from Visva, the gods known as Visvedevas. The valorous Sudharma, the valorous Sarhkhapat, the valorous Daksa, Vapusman, Ananta and Mahirana, were the sons of Caksusa Manu, (who were born as Visvedevas).

Besides them, Visvavasu, Suparva, the gloreous Visthara, and Ruru — the son of a jRsi, having the lustre of the sun, were also known as Visvedevas.

Visva — the mother of gods had produced the Visvadevas. Marutvati had given birth to the gods with auspicious symbols and known as Marutvan.

They were known by the names of Agni, Caksu, Havi, Jyoti, Savitra, Mitra, Agara, Saravrsti, Mahabahu Samkhaya, Viraja, Sukra, Visvavasu, Vibhavasu, Asmanta, Citrarasmi, Raja Niskupita, Нйуатап, Huti, Caritra, Bahu Pannaga, Brhanta, BrhadrUpa and Paratapana.

In earlier times Dharma produced from Marutvati ftvo auspicious sons. О king, Kasyapa produced from the womb of Aditi, the twelve Adityas, who were known by the names of Indra, Visnu, Bhag, Tvasta, Varuna, Ariisa, Aryama, Ravi, Pusa, Mitra, Varadayaka Manu, and Parjanya. These twelve Adityas are the excellent gods.

Aditya produced from the womb of Sarasvati, two auspicious sons who possessed the excellent beauty and the prowess. They were the best in beauty, of all the dwellers of the heaven.

Danu gave birth to the Danavas. Kala gave birth to Kalakeyas, asuras and the Raksasas.

Adhi and Uyodhi were the sons of Danaynsa. Simhika was the mother of the planet Rahu, besides being the mother of Munis and Gandharvas.

Bharata, Prabodha was the mother of Apsaras. Surasa produced the serpents. Krodha gave birth to the bhiitas and pisacas.

О lord of the people the Yaksas, Guhyakas, and all the quadrupeds, are also born of Krodha. But the cows who were born of Surabhi should not be treated as having been born of Krodha.

Both Aruna and Garuda were born from Vinata. The goddess Kadru, gave birth the serpents and the nagas, who carry the earth.

O king, lord Shri Hari at the time of the emergence of Puskara, all the lokas with mutual cooperation, attained expansion and growth.

I have heard from the mouth of my preceptor about the episode of the emergence of Puskara. All the activities of the Maharsis of the ancient times were revealed to me.

Such of the noble people, who becoming alert, always recites this auspicious Purana, he achieves the desired reward and becomes free from grief, enjoys all the divine comforts on earth.
