Condition of a yogi and the obstacles faced by him

Janamejaya said — О Brahman, О great sage, in both the Adiyugas the great yogi Brahma, achieved Brahma — hood. I would like to know about activities of Brahma relating to the creation.

Vaishampayana said — О king, you are asking the question quite intelligently you listen to the answer, since your mind is engaged in an effort to receive the divine knowledge, by various means. I am speaking out exhaustively on the subject.

О Bharata, Brahma, whose mind has been engrossed in yoga, who himself emerged out of Paramatma — the supreme Brahman, who has the strength to perform the deeds, is extemely influenced. The same lord Brahma, getting elevated, occupies the Brahmasana (his seat) at the same moment he is disturbed by rajoguna. Therefore he starts creation of the universe.

He was attracted towards the learned position, which could create thousands of competent positions. (It was in the same way as the sages Saubhari and Kardama had created many things out of these powers).

In face Brahma, under the influence of yoga, performs the Vedic yajha. Therefore, because of the his excellence in the yoga he earns enormous knowledge as well the fortunes.

Then Brahma, under the influence of yoga, thought of the welfare of the living beings and made use of the already earned fortunes for the welfare of the people.

With the performing of the unblemished karma, getting devoted to the yoga, Brahma, the form of Brahman, achieved the fortunes of the sky.

At that point of time, in his view, the entire sky became spotless, clear, and the form of eternal Brahman. During that condition all the learned people well realise Brahma to be only place in which the living beings, humans, besides the competent yogis well versed in Brahman could be absorbed.

Getting engaged in the performing of the yogic yajna having achieved the fortunes in the form of the sky, Brahma the orator on Brahman, then creates innumerable powerful wind with obstructions or blemishes or the Aisvarya.

Because of the obstructions so created the Siddha-yogi well-versed in Brahma, achievss the infallible or everlasting fortunes or aisvarya.

The Siddha-yogi, emerging from the body wanders in the sky without any support. He wanders with the strength of his dreams, mental imagination, without any support. Equipped with Brahmaisvarya, the Bhutatma — yogi, while wandering in the sky, retains the view of the people like Indra, having innumerable eyes.

Then foremost of the Brahmanas, because of his noble mind, reciting the name of omkara, he get relieved of all the bondages of karma. Then the Brahmanas are in a position to have an audience with the same (Brahma) Yogi.

O king, omkara — the form of Pranava represents the supreme Brahman, which is adorned by the learned Brahmanas. The supreme Brahman, in the form of Pranava, moves in the bodies of all the living beings with their consciousness. You understand it well.

This omkara signifies all the letters and then becomes the great sound. It is eternal and everlasting. By following it, one unites with Brahman — The Brahmanas say that with the combination of the wind it becomes aksara.

Pranava, inspite of being formless, in union with lustre, water and food, it takes to the form of the sound. It also wanders in the bodies of the living beings in the form of jivatma, works according to its will and controls all the sense organs.

In earlier times, having been advised by the acaryas (teachers) well-versed in the Pravava-sastras, and by constally following it, getting devoted to yoga, the people were bestowed with all the desires.

Combination with all the glory of Brahman Brahmanas, desirous of Brahmaloka and Vaisnavapada perform, freely all the relevant activities. 0 Bharata, these Brahmanas are never desirous of having rebirth in the world, but they intend to be reborn for the soke of attaining knowledge.

Those Brahmanas offer flower garlands thrice a day in the morning, noon and the night, and engaging themselves in meditation, adore lord Visnu, the lord of truth.

О Naresvara, considering the Vedas to be the main evidence, the yogis well-versed in Brahman, resorted to yogic practices and earned enormous fortunes thereof. Following the dictates of the Vedas, the yogis well-versed in the Brahman, achieved the Vaisnava lustre or Brahman.

The auspicious and truthful Brahmdvadi Brahmanas, well versed in Brahman, getting free from the bondages of the karmas and get an audience with the combination of lustre and the water, at the time of moksa.

The same Paramatma is the supreme Brahman and is the extremely wonderful Vaisnava lustre. He is the same blissful Aisvarya or the supreme glory. With the merger of the earlier deformation, one can have an audience with him.

The adversities of the terrific form, cause trouble to the yogi, such adversities drenching him with water, make him nervous. He then feels distrubed and unconscious. Several waves cover him. Some of them are quite cool, while others are hot. Thus he is surrounded by the adversities.

Falling in the huge ocean, he starts burning, but he does not drown in it. Sometimes he drowns in the great river, but he does not feel more painful in water. Whenever he feels painful in water, then he is forcibly thrown in the cool water. Getting deprived of the seat as well as covering or a sheath, he is fainted.

Sometimes he gets drentched falling in a pit, streams of water start falling over his head from all the four sides.

Sometimes, he sights a flame, while the clouds of white and yellow colour fly in the sky with lightenings and create obstructions for him at each step.

While facing these adversites, and with the removal of these adversities from all the sides achieving the divine fortimes, the Brahmana becomes a siddha.

With the enjoying of several types of rasas, several of the aisvarya of juices appear, which spreading in thousands of streams take to the form of streams.

Then the powerful siddha-yogi creates several types of rasas with his yogic powers. He also creates several types of rasas, which are useful to the bodies in various forms.

The yogi well versed in Brahman, while performing yogic exercises for achieving moksas, there appears taijas-aisvarya which goes on increasing with adversities.

The creatures in human form, with terrific* and forceful nature, having yellow eyes, holding rods in their hands start belabouring the yogi.

Some horrible creature start piercing through their eyes. Some one cuts his tongue into pieces with several of the obstruction people keep on yawning repeatedly and start creating huge noise at one and the same time.

Then all of them suddenly take to several forms, and start dancing and singing in order to please the yogi.

Then all of them take to the forms of women, and are tied up with the yogi. Some of them hang around his neck. Taking to several forms, they enter him by various means.

Then the obstructions in the form of women call him in sweet words. Then all of them bow collectively at the yogi placing their heads over the feet.

For creating obstruction in the yogic practices of the yogi, they seek the grace of the ascetic. They talk to him variously besides dancing with this performance, they sometimes are victorious over the yogi.

With the arrival of this obstruction with the complete subjugation of the same, achieving the unfailing fortunes, the yogi, well-versed in the Brahman becomes a Siddha or the one who has achieved the success.

Then like flames of fire and the rays of the sun, they achieves the fortunes of lustre. Then the drops of lustre start emerging out of his body.

The yogis, possessing all the Sattva- gunas, twinkling like the flame in the sky, always move on the path of the sun and the moon in the world.

Taking to the form of the sun and the moon, together with clouds and divine flame of kalacakra and wandering the abode of Dhruva, he taking to the same forms, becomes resplendent in this world.

The same yogi becomes the fortnight, month, samvatsara or a year, the moments, lava- small measure of time, moment, kala-apart of time, katha - measure of time, days and nights, nimesa - twinkling of an eye, unmesa-twinkling of an eye, besides the movements of planets.

Then with the acceptance of the obstruction the yogi achieves material fortunes. The yogis, after having overpowered with this, fall down from the unshakable lion throne.

With the discarding of the greed, the obstructions and fall down and are shattered. Such a yogi, after disowning the greed, is at once relieved of the obstructions. But the yogi, who feels panicky of the obstru- ctions, is denounced in the world. Such a yogi, suffers again and again in the world, getting injured with the obstructions.

With the various forms of living beings, besides other activities of the world, he rapidly develops contacts and with their deflection, his forward movement held up.

Thereafter, enjoying the material- aisvarya, the yogi is tortured by metals from all the sides.

He is killed seveal times with the use of weapons, like Sakti, tomara and Sword, club thousands of swords as sharp as daggers.

The tips of the sharp arrows which injure the sensitive spots are also to be faced by the yogi. Inspite of the arrival of all the dangers, when the yogi faces them boldly, he becomes siddha.

Thereafter getting free from the dangers, the material fortunes appear before the yogi. But he continues his samadhi undisturbed. Then with the divine smell he listens to the talk of the heavens.

With the possessing of that body the divine person faces difficultly and with the fall of that body, achieving the sarvatma, he becomes totally different. Travelling in the inner world, the yogi, enters the hearts the auspicious souls as a result of his noble deeds.

Here ends chapter — 19, of Bhavisya Parva of the Harivamsa Purana a supplement of the epic of Mahabharata, relating to the condition of a yogi and the obstructions faced by him. (Vrs. 1- 55, P.T. = 10,513)
