Battle between Madhu and Visnu





Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, the terrific strong Daitya Madhu, at the instance of Prahlada, captured Indra and imprisoned him in a mountain, binding him with a noose. О Bharata, he was well - versed in the symptoms, but had not lost his wisdom. Therefore, aspiring to become Indra in future he captured him.

He bound Indra with strong chains of iron, which were unbreakable at the waist of Indra.Thereafter, Madhu — the foremost of the Daityas, under the influence of time, even challanged lord Visnu the form of Rudra, with his ganas.

The sons of Kasyapa, getting divided into two parts, under the command of Madhu, holding huge club in their hands rushed to fight a war with the gods.

The Gandharvas well versed in the use of singing and musical instruments, sang and danced with delight.

Creating pleasent sounds from the wires of the veena, which was played upon in a sweet tone they disturbed the mind of Madhu who was engaged in war.

In order to reduce the strenght of Madhu, in whom the darkness was predominant, at the command of Brahma, born of lotus, the truthful Gandharvas created obstructions.

The powerful Madhu's mind caught the attention of the music. Both Danavas and the asuras, thundered while marching past him.

In this way disturbing the mind of Madhu in the worldly attractions, lord Visnu who visualised things with the yogic vision, suddenly moved towards the Mandaracala mountain. Like the fire hiding itself in the woods.

At that point of time the Rishis felt painful at heart. All of them, making Brahma to lead, disappeared in a moment.

On the other hand the enraged Madhu, with yellow eyes, reaching before Visnu, slapped him over his temples, but he remained undisturbed.

Thereafter lord Visnu also slapped the Daitya over chest, as a result of which he fell down on his knees, vomiting blood.

The immensely valorous lord Visnu who was well versed in waging the war, realising the arrival of an opportunity for a wriestling fight, did not attack Madhu who had fallen on earth.

Then the heart of Madhu was filled in anger. He then stood up on his knees, like the unfurling of a flag. Then he looked in rage towards Visnu, as he would bum him out with the fire of his eyes.

Both of them speaking harsh words, started thundering at each other. Then in order to kill each other they caught each other in one's arms. Both of them were extremely strong and well-versed in wagging the war. Because of the influence of their tapas, they became peaceful for a moment, displaying the reality before each other.

Both of them attacked each other with strength and also dragged each other. They kept on fighting like the two mountains with stones.

As the two elephants attack with the lips of their trunks, injure in the battle ground, similarly both Madhu and Shri Visnu pulling each other and vomiting blood started wandering in the battle- ground.

With the wounds caused by each other over the body of the opponent, the blood was oozing as the melted flow of matals during the rainy season.

They were drenched with the flowing blood and were equally soaked in blood. Then while getting up and falling, they tore out the ground with their fore parts of the feet.

They attacked each other again and again, like the two birds fighting forcely.

At that point of all in the sky heard the praises of lord Visnu, relating the events being faced by them on earth. These eulogies came from the mouths of the siddhas and were adorned with excellent fortunes.

This body is the combination of three dhatus like the lustre, water and food or the seven dhatus like the rasa (juice), flesh, fat, bones, marrow, and semen. It has the consciousness, which represents the eternal Brahman, which with the combination of the sense organs becomes the jiva.

The elements which start the body, when facing the time of dissolution, become the subtle cause of destruction. Then the subtle form takes to many forms and reappears repeatedly.

The one who fulfills the desires of all and the supreme soul who controls all, making others to realise about the reality, wanders in the universe in different forms.

О Yogatma-Isvara, — the sustainer of the Devaloka, emerge in his subtle form as the serpent Sesa wanders carrying the earth over his hood. He with the intention of subjugating the wicked and for the protection of the noble people, besides several other reasons, protects the world taking to many forms like Sesa, kwrma and other human bodies protects the world.

The four types of creatures like those born of body or egg etc are sustained by him besides the mobile and immobile ones.

He taking refuge with the cows, extracting the milk and protects all of you. In the yajna taking shelter of the instruments of the yajna, with the performing of abhiseka, protects you all. With the steam of hot oblation meant for the manes and offering havisya to the gods in the yajna he satisfies the gods as well.

With the four types of cereals, with different parts, and with the three other dhatus (mind, speech and prana) are the seven types of cereals which have to be daily offered to lord Visnu, who protects the whole world and the manes.

Out of these seven, four which are the forms of the sun and moon, three represent the sun and four represent the moon, they appropriately function over the bright as well as the dark path. Because they could be achieved with difficulty, they keep the body also in a difficult situation. All of them get illumintated with their own lustre.

Three of the manes always enhance the sun god, while the four manes live in lunar region with the moon.

The three manes, enjoying the fruit Pindas, and four other manes, taking to the siddhas form, take to the shape of siddhas etc. having been accepted by Prajapati as a Yajamana.

О lord, you yourself produced the fine dharmas (or the five bhutas besides the five apancikrta bhUtas. You are eternal, divine, everlasting, and are the source of the creation of the Vedas.

The fire as well as the wind also extract your lustre. Therefore, with the activity of receiving, you have been designated as Aditya or the sun. (You are yourself resplendent and illuminate others).

On the arrival of the time of dissolution, you burning the universe with your rays, receive them which earn you the name of Aditya. You have always been bestowed with success.

You concealing your own form, in the company of the Rishis emerging from the sun, moon and Vasus, on the full moon day as well as on the moonless day, roam about in the universe.

You are the performer of all the karmas and enhance the comforts of the Yajamana or the performers. The karmas which are the cause for the achieving of comforts should not be made infructuous. No blemish should develop in them. They should not become infructuous. The dharma should not disappear with the passage of time. You roam about in the world to take care of all of them.

You, on the moonless day, in the form of the moon, dwell in the greenery and vanspatis (vegetation) at one and the same time. You do so for getting reborn in the form of a child (or the digit of the moon). In the bright fortnight you are reborn as fresh.

O Bhutesvara, 0 fortunate one, the riches which have been collected on earth for the use of the people in the past as well as the future, it happens to be your form.

You indeed represent the various activities on earth of the eternal dharma. You represent the Devayajna, mantra-vakya, self glory and are the person competent to receive the same.

You are the sun and the moon the two paths of spotless heaven. Of these the moon is the path of smoke and the sun has the bright path.

You collect the sense organs as well as the virtues, in the body and make them wander over the earth, and then roam about in the universe. You enjoy the pleasures of earth according to the limitations. You also appear in various forms in Paraloka.

You being Purana-Purusa also appear as Virat-Purusa. You are beyond destruction, beyond measure, subjugate all and are the performer of various sports.

You appear as the beauty in the tejas - tattva. You roam about in the sky as wind. You using the mahattattva, ahamkara and panca-tanmatras, you pervade the world.

During the time of meditation, in the form of jiva, during the stage of libration, in auspicious form, during the daily and Brahma dissolution, as Rudra and at the time of sustenance you appear as Visnu. The directions, the limitations of varnasrama-dharma represent you. You are the eyes visualising the activities of the world. You are established as consciousness in the sense organs."

In this way when all the ascetics, being sinless, having controlled all the sense organs, dealing with the friends and the foes equally, and being truthful, were eulogising lord Visnu. The gods and the Maharsis were also eulogising him and at that point of time lord Hari, remembered his gignatic form of Haygrlva.

Then Shri Hari taking to the all divine form, looks quite graceful. Mahadeva Siva was lodged over his head while Brahma was lodged in hH heart.

The sun rays were his lines of hair, the sun and the moon were illuminating his eyes. Vasus and Sadhyas were lodged over the back of the waist. The gods were lodged in all the joints.

The fire god was lodged over the tongue. The goddess Sarasvatl served him as his speech. The Marudganas and Varuna were lodged in his knees.

Thus lord Hayagrlva, representing all the gods, taking to wonderful form, having red eyeballs, then pressed the asura in rage as a result of which the stomach of the asura was burst out.

The water gushing out of the belly of the asura, was spread on earth, which appeared like a young damsel clad in white costume.

О best of kings, because of the asura's belly (meda) the earth came to be known as Medani, which was popularised on earth by thousands of asuras.
