The Varaha incarnation of Visnu

Janamejaya said — О Respectable Brahmana, I have heard from the month of the noble people about the Varaha incarnation of lord Visnu.

Usually the people are unaware of the episode of lord Varaha. Its method and the size is also unknown. The activities of lord Varaha, his excellence, the cause of his incarnation besides the thoughts of his heart and the cause of his incarnation are unknown.

What is the form of Varaha? What type of image does he have? Who is his god? His conduct and influence is unknown, what were the tasks performed by him in the earlier times?

Having been overpowered with doubt, I have put you the question. The Brahmanas who have collected here for the performing of the yajna are also desirous of listening to the story of the incaration of Varaha, in detail. (Therefore you kindly narrate the same).

Vaishampayana said — The Varaha episode of lord Visnu — the performer of wonderful deeds as narrated in the Puranas, is adorable like the Vedas. It is supported by many Srutis, and has been presented by Shri Krishna Dvaipdyana Vyasa. I shall now narrate the said episode before you.

О king Janamejaya, Lord Narayana, the destroyer of the enemies, taking to the form of Varaha, supported by the Vedic literature getting purified and enthusiastic, redeemed the earth, carrying it over the tip of his tusk, from the ocean. You listen from me the relevant episode.

This episode which is auspicious, ancient, authentic like the Vedas, supported by the Srutis, should not be narrated in presence of an atheist.

This entire Purana is the form of Samkhyayoga. The intelligent, who would understand the meaning of it correctly, shall find the entire samkhyayoga contained in it.

The Visvedevas, Sadhyas, Rudra, Adityas, Asvinikumaras, Prajapati, seven Rishis, the Rishis who represent the mental creation of Brahma, Vasus, apsaras, Gandharvas, Yaksas, Raksasas, Daityas, Pisacas, Naga, various types of BhUtas (goblins), Bramanas, Ksatriyas, vaisyas, Suduras, Mlechhas and other, besides all the quadrupeds, the birds, mobile and immobile creatures, and all others represent the form of Varaha.

Consequent to the completion of a thousand caturyugas, when the day of Brahma comes to an end, and the living beings get destroyed by various types of disturbances, at that point of time, the fire, wind, the sun and the fire with three flames, appear on earth, who represent the forms of Brahma, Visnu and Siva. All of them with their flames, dry out the lives of all the living beings.

The face of the fire god in the form of flames, and with the lustre, all the limbs are burnt out. Thus they become lusterless. Then the Vedas with six angas (having been deprived of their lustre), the Upanisads, itihasa, etc. besides those who serve as the refuge, of all the vidyas, being truthful, under the leadership of Brahma, as per the desire of Isvara, entered the seprent should hoods having mouths on all the sides. On the arrival of that day, all the thirty three crores of gods, enter the body of great Hari, who is imperishable, form of swan, the great yogi, and is also known as Narayana.

As the sun rising in one country and else sets in another. Or the sun rising in one country becomes invisible in the other country, and the people of that country think it as having been set, and when it starts shining then they think it to have been risen, similarly jivas who repeatedly enter the body of lord Narayana, for them the desturction and dissolution is a regular process. It means that at the end of the day of Brahma, all the living beings enter the body of Narayana, which is called Pralaya or the dissolution. Because at the time of dissolution, the sage Markandeya, witnessed the entire universe in the belly of lord Visnu.

On the completion of a thousand Caturyugas, a kalpa is finished and nothing is left in it. Under those circumstances, all the activities of a jiva come to a halt or get destroyed.

Enshrining the gods, asuras, Nagas with all the lokas, in his belly, only then lord Hari- the preceptor of the universe, remains on earth.

The eternal lord Hari, who being invisible recreates all the living beings at the close of the kalpa, the entire universe belongs to him.

When the sun rays disappear from the univers, the moon rays also vanish, the fire and the wind are also abondedned, and the activities of vasatkara also come to an end, the flocks of birds are lost, the trafic over the roads is stopped, when the universe is deprieved of the maryada or limitations, is covered with terrific darkness from all the sides, when all the lokas disappear, the performing of the karmas declines, peace envelops all the quarters, all activity come to an end, the conflicts and enmity are destroyed, all the people attain their natural condition, and the entire universe is turned as Narayana. At that point of time Paramesthl lord Hrsikesa gets ready to go to sleep.

He was clad in yellow lower garment (pitambara). The eyes were somewhat red. He had the complexion of clouds. He was wearing matted locks of hair over the head.

The Shrivatsa mark was drawn over his chest with the red sandal paste and with that Shri Hari appeared like the cloud with lightening.

At that point of time, his neck was adorned with a garland of a thousand lotus flowers, which looked graceful. Laksml — his spouse was standing there, covering his entire body.

The auspicious and immensely valorous, the grand sire of the universe, lord Narayana, taking refuge with the Nidra- yoga went to sleep in an inexplicable manner.

After the lapse of thousands of years, the all pervading Paramesvara, woke up himself. (He sleeps and washes up at the end of each one of the kalpas).

Thereafter, lord Visnu, the creator of the universe with the use of the karmas relating to Brahman again thought for the creation of the gods, asuras, and the humans.

Thereafter lord Narayana, who is always victorious in war, and is the lord of speech, is reminded of the task of the gods and he engages himself in the creation of the universe.

He is the creator of the bhutas, and the worldly things, in different forms. He is the destroyer and maintains the people.

All the gods adore Narayana. All the activities are aimed at Narayana alone. Narayana happens to be the sole refuge of yajnas, besides being the tattva established in the Srutis.

Narayana is the height of moksa. The supreme goal of dharma is Narayana. The Yojna too is performed for the delight of Narayana.

Narayana happens to be the supreme shape of jnana or the divine knowledge. The supreme stage to be achieved by practicing the truth is Narayana. Truth is the means to achieve Narayana. Narayana also is the supreme pada or liberation. There is no god superior to lord Narayana nor shall any one be in future.

He should be treated as the self burn Brahma — the lord of all the bhuvanas. He alone is known by the name of wind, besides being the eternal yajna.

He should be known as sat (truth) as well untruth). He alone is the creator of yajna as well as the people. All the requirements of the gods are taken care of by him alone.

The impregnable tattva of the lord, is unknown by the gods. His end is unknown to the gods, Prajapatis, and the seven iRsis. Therefore he earned the title of being Ananta or endless.

His supreme and excellent form, is visualised in the heaven by the gods. His shape that emerges in the incarnations, is also adored by the gods. In case the lord himself has not appeared before anyone, then who can search for the same.

He is the leader of all the living beings, fire of the stomach, the movement of the pranas, besides the tapas, lustre and the treasure of nectar.

He is the one who enjoys the fruit of all the four varnas and the four yajnas. He is the one who makes others to enjoy fruits of the yajnas.. He pervades upto all the four oceans, and makes the four yugas to repeat.

Shri Hari, the Mahayogl destroying the entire world, establishes it in his belly, kept it there for thousands of years, which ultimately appears as a globe.

О Janamejaya, lord Prajapati, the admirer and the follower of the Vedas, at that point of time, created the gods, asuras, Brahmanas, Nagas, apsaras, great osadhis, the mountains, Yaksas and Guhyakas and the races of Raksas from his own form.

Here ends chapter — 33, of Bhavisya Parva of the Harivamsa Purana, a supplement of the epic of the Mahabharata, relating to the Varaha incarnation of Visnu. (Vrs. 1-47, P.T. = 11,122)
