Details of the Varaha, Nrsimha, Parasurama, Shri Krishna and other incarnation of Visnu

Janamejaya said: О Brahman, I have heard from the mouths of the reciter of the religious stories, the details about the Varaha incarnation of Visnu.

But I would like to listen to the story in details of the lord Varaha, his form, his performance, his virtuous, country, dravyas and the period etc. besides the method of his adoration, the purpose for which he incarnates on earth. I am not aware of the same. Therefore you kindly speak out the details to me.”

When Janamejaya so asked (the sage Vaishampayana about the Varaha incarnation, as also the realistic form of Varaha, his outwards influence and the relevant god for him, his deeds his influence, and what did he do in that incarnation?

I have listened to the discassion among the Brahmanas, during the perfomance of Yajna, about Mahavaraha, (but I failed to understand much of it).

O Brahman, the way in which lord Visnu took to the form of Varaha and the way in which, lord Varaha, rescued the goddes earth, lying in the oceanic bed, you kindly narrate the relevant story to me.

I would like to listen to all the performance of lord Krishna, (in his Varaha and other incarnations) exhaustively.

The human sports perfomed by lord Visnu in several of his incarnations, you kindly describe them in detail.

Why was lord Visnu, the destroyer of the enemies of the gods, was born in the family of Vasudeva and why was he known as Vasudeva. (In other words, why did he incarnate on earth, when he was free from the bondages of karmas, then why did he reach the earth?).

He is the one who is always surrounded by the gods and is served by the noble souls, then why does he, leaving the heaven reache the earth?

The one who is the leader of humans and the gods, who happens to be the source of the creation of the earth as well, then why did he discarding his auspicious position, allowed his soul to enter in a human body?

He is the one who operates without any obstruction the human Cakres, he himself being the holder of a cakra. Besides he is the best and foremost among the carrier of Cakras, then how could he develop an idea to function as Krishna on earth.

He is the one who protects the entire earth, then how could the same lord Visnu perform as a cowherd on earth?

The one who is the innersoul of all the bhutas, who is the creator of all the Mahabhutas, besides containing them, then how could the divine being be held by an ordinary woman wandering on earth?

Lord Visnu in order to fulfil the wishes of the gods, measured the three lokas with his three steps, conquring them at the same time and established the three paths, the three movements of dharma, artha and kama.

The same lord at the time of dissolution, by means of visible and invisible forms, consuming the entire universe, turns his body as water like and reduces the same into the vast ocean of water.

In the ancient times the supreme soul lord Visnu the destroyer of the enemies, taking to the form of Varaha, raised the earth over the tip of his tusk and rescued the same.

In ancient times, lord Visnu, eternal and they foremost of the gods, for the sake of Indra conquered the demon army and returned the three lokas to the gods.

The one, who in earlier times taking to the form of Nrsimha, killed an immensely powerful demon king Hiranyakasipu.

The glorious one, who at the time of dissolution, entered the nether world taking at that time the form of Sarhvartaka- fire, of Aurava race, drank the ghee like water of the ocean.

О Brahman, in each and every Yuga, the lord, who is described to possess a thousand heads, a thousand eyes, performse of the endless charities, besides having a thousand feet.

After the absorption of the world in the oceanic waters, from whose navel there emerged a lotus with Brahma seated over it.

The one who was at war with the demon Tarakasura, turned his body representing all the gods and carrying all the weapons, killed all the Raksasas.

The one having mounted over Garuda destroyed the arrogant Kalanemi, besides killing the Danavas knonw as Maya and Taraka.

The one who enters into yogic sleep over the northern shore of the ocean of milk, which is filled with nectar.

Aditi — the form of arani, performed severe austerities, held the great soul (Vamana) in her womb, got Indra, who had been captivated in the cakras of the Daityas, made him all successful.

He is the one who measured all the three lokas with his three steps, despatched the Daityas to the nether world and made the gods to stay in the heaven. Thereafter, he established Indra, as the emperor of the gocfsr.

He is the one who created the Yajna vases called camas, ulukhala etc. as prescribed in the Grhyasutras.

He is the one who conceived the involving of Agni, the fire altar, kusa grass, vase for the sprinkling of water with kusa. grass, dhruva and the materials for sacred bath.

He is the one, who created nectar and the three padarthas for the use of the Brahmanas, which bestows havya and kavya. He made the gods to consume havya in the sacrifice and made the manes also to do so.

He is the one who for earmrking the portion of the gods (from sacrifice) created the method of reciting the mantras, besides the creation of the sacrificial pillar, Samidha (sacrificial branches of wood, Sruva, soma, ring of Kusa grass and the perimeters.

It is he who prsecribed the material for use in sacrifices, fire altars made of bricks, three types of invoking fires, the performers of sacrifices and the Yajna priests. He also described the best quality of Yajna and divided them as per the method of Brahma. Besides he created people who were suitable for of the three yugas and then put a stop to the same.

He is the one who created morning, noon and the evening times known as three kalas or muhUrtas, besides dates, months, fortnights, years, seasons, three types of deeds, three types of pramanas, besides, age, mobile and immobile bodies, Vrddhi (two or four feet etc), symptoms and forms and beauty.

He is the one who created the three Varnas (i.e. Brahmana, ksatrayas, vaisyas, Sudras are not included here), three lokas (sky earth and nether world), three vidyas (viz Rke, yajnh and Sama), three fires, three kalas (past, present and future), three types of karmas, three types of methods and three gunas (sattva, rajas and tamas.

He is the one, who created the three lokas on the basis of the karmas (deeds) of the people. At the same time he is the creator of all the creatures, possessing all the gunas of the bhiltas.

He is the leader of all the creatures being the cause of the birth and death of all the jivas, who enjoys all the worldly pleasures with the combination of the sense organs.

He is the god of the performers of dharraa and is the cause of fall of the evil people or in other words, the sinful people cannot achieve him. He is the source of origin of all the Varnas. He is the protector of the four types of sacrifices.

He is well versed with the four types of knowlege (Vidyas), who is the refuge of all the four asramas, in whom all the directions are absorbed. His the form of earth, fire, water, wind and the sky.

Не is Yogisvara who provides resplendence to the sun and moon, puts an end to the night of delusion, who is believed to be the form of supreme resplendence or the one whose vision visualises everything everywhere. He is also believed to be the form of tapas or is achieved by performing of the severe tapas.

Не is also called the greatest or Virat and beyond SUtratama. He is also sagna Brhman, resembling the soul and has the body of Maya. The Vedas also establish Narayana. All the activities end in Narayana.

Narayana is also the goal of dharma. The end of all the movements rests in Narayana. Narayana is the base of truth. Narayana can be achieved only by means of tapas.

Narayana is the base of moksa. Narayana is the final refuge. The lord who exists in the sky in the form of planets, he happens to be the destroyer of the Daityas.

He is the one who takes to the form of Kala at the time of dissolusion. He also performs himself as Yama at the end of the world. He acts as Yama for Yama as well. He is death for the death. He prescribes limitations for the people and is also the bridge for the people like Manu. He is the one who purifies the purifiers.

He can be realised through the people well-versed in the Vedas. He is reflected like a moon in the human beings and is pleasent to look at, the resplendent like fire on the illustrious people.

He is the form of mind in human beings, form of tapas in the ascetic, resides as humility in the persons of morality and he is the lustre in the illustrious people. He is the creator of the universe and the excellent cause of the world.

He is the form of gods who incarnate on earth, taking to the human or other forms, he is the activity of the active people. He is the wind produced in the sky and is the form of fire, which survives by wind.

Fire is the life of the gods, while MadhusUdana is also the life of Agni. The blood informed by juice (the semen is formed of the blood which develops the womb) Thus by becoming the cause of fire, carries on all the activities of generating by fire). The flesh is caused by the blood.

The heart is lodged in the centre of the body, which is also treated as the place of mind. The fire resides inside navel.

The feet emerges out of the flesh, while the bones are formed by fat. Marrow is formed of bones, while semen is formed of marrow.

With sexual enjoyment the semen is established in the womb, in which water (semen) serves the first part. (The colour of the semen is white, therefore it is pleasent and is the part of soma, with excess of watery substance. The second part which emerges out of the heat of the belly is the form of blood, which represents fire. Thus the semen is treated to be the part of soma and the menstrual excretion in a woman forms part of the fire. Thus the semen is the part of soma and menstrual part is the part of fire.

With the aforesaid both are the parts of sexual exercise, because moon and the fire are the gist of the same. The semen comes in the form of cough and the blood under biles. The place of cough is the heart, while that of the bite is navel.

Prajapati is the presiding daily of the mind. Therefore, the mind should be treated as Prajapad, while cough should be treated as soma. The bile should be treated as fire. Thus the entire world is the fire like substance.

As the clouds develops with the smoke, light, water and the wind, similarly the womb also develops with food, fire, water and life. Therefore it is unconscious with the development of the womb, the wind enters it with the soul and develops thereafter.

After entering into the body, limbs of the jiva are created, besides developing them. It develops in five parts.

These five parts include prana (breath), арапа (flatus), Samana (a kind of wind) Udana (a kind of wind) Vyana (vital air in the body). Out of these the prana air supports the heart, while bleeding.

The wind named арапа moves in the body from thighs to the feet. The wind named udana moves above the thighs, develops the bust and the Vyana wind increases the strength of the body. (Therefore it remains present in all the joints of the body.) The wind named Samana, remaining in the navel helps in digesting the stuff which is eaten or drunk and distributes them to the appropriate places. Thus after the division of pran-vdyu a person enjoys the pleasure of the sense organs.

The reason for this is that the earth, water, light, wind and the sky, are turned into the sense organs enter their respective regions in the body. In this way they enter in their own forms.

The difficult part collected in the body, is believed to be the blemish of earth. The liquids emerging from the body like prana is of wind, the nine holes in the body are treated as the blemish of the sky, while the urine and refuse etc which are dropped from the body are considered to be the blemish of water.

The eyes are the form of resplendence, mind is the part of the lustre of earth etc. and the command of the mind, Because of the strength of the mind, the elements of the earth and the fragrance become visible or all the villages, cities could be built with the strength of the mind.

The eternal lord Pursottama, thus creates these ancient cities or lokas. Then why did lord Visnu incarnated on the perishable earth?

О Brahman, this doubt has been developed in my mind for which I feel surprised. Why did such a powerful lord Visnu had to be born on earth as a human being?

I have heard about origin of my dynasty and the ancestors. Now I would like to listen to incarnations of Visnu as well as the dynasty of Vrsni in a chronological order.

О great sage, the gods as well as the Daityas describe Visnu having an astonishing personality. Therefore you kindly narrate the surprising aspect of the birth of Visnu on earth.

You kindly narrate the pleasent and graceful stories about the birth of Visnu, displaying his strength and powers, which are of surprising nature, besides his performance on earth.

Here ends Chapter 40, of Harivamsa Parva from Harivansa Purana, the khilabhaga of the epic of Mahabharata, relating to the details of Varaha, Parasurama, Krishna and other incarnations of Visnu. (Vrs. i-66, P.T.= 2116)
