Killing of Pralambasura by Balarama

Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, thereafter both the delighted sons of Vasudeva, leaving the palmyra forest went to the Bhandira-vata.

Reaching there they kept on grazing the healthy and well built cows and started enjoying the greenery of the place.

Both the brothers terrified the enemies, some times patted their thighs, sometimes sang songs, at times plucked the leaves and fruit of the trees and some times, they called the cows with calves, uttering their individual names.

They carried the ropes for binding the cows over their shoulders, they possessed the best of symptoms and adorned with the garlands of forest flowers over their chests, they appeared like the young calves.

Out of those two, the complexion of the body of one of them resembled the powder of gold, while the other one resembled the complexion of collyrium. Both of them were clad in the costumes of the opposite completion. (In otherwords, the costumes of Balarama were blue like the complexion of Krishna, while those of Krishna were yellow like the complexion of Balarama). Both of them looked like the rainbow or like the two clouds of white and black colours.

Over the forest paths, they wore the tips of the Kusa grass or the flowers costumes.

In the forest they were followed by a large number of cowherd boys. Both of them roamed about around Govardhana, followed by the other cowherd boys. Both of them could not be defeated by anyone. They pleased themselves, by engaging themselves in child like sports around Bhandlravata.

Thus inspite of their having been adored by the gods, both of them receiving human initiation, indulged themselves in human sports, wandering here and there.

Reaching closer to the Bhandlra tree, while getting engaged in the child like sports, arrived under the said tree with tender shoots and branches.

Both of them were well-versed in welfare, sometimes enjoyed the swing ride, and sometime indulged in exercise, by throwing the stone balls.

They displayed different types of poses. Both of them were powerful like lions and with the cowherds in their company, they roamed about at will delightfully.

When both of them were so enjoying the sports, at the same time, asura Pralamba, taking to the form of a cowherd, arrived there. He had decorated himself with the forest flowers and started searching for some shortcoming. He pleased both of them with his activities.

Then Pralamba — the foremost of the Danavas, had disguised himself as a human being, then he in reality was not a human. He mixed up with the cowherds.

All the cowherd boys started playing with the Danava who was the enemy of the gods. Since he arrived disguised as a cowherd, the boys took him to be one of them.

But Pralamba who had arrived disguised as a cowherd, was in search of their weakness. Therefore he cast a cruel glance at both Balarama and Krishna.

Shri Krishna possessed the astonishing prowess, therfore taking him to be invincible, he thought of killing Balarama.

Then all the cowherd boys played the game the deer sport in which.two children move jumping like a deer towards a feed point.

О sinless Janamejaya, then Shri Krishna moved with Shridama and Pralamba in the form of a cowherd moved with Balarama, while jumping. Thus the other cowherd boys also moved in pairs. All of them tried to cover the distance earlier than others.

In the game, Shri Krishna defeated Shridama, Balarama defeated Pralamba, and other boys of the team of Krishna defeated their opponents.

The boys who were defeated, carried the winners over their backs and while running reached the Bhindira tree and then returned but Danava Pralamba carrying Balarama over his shoulders started moving towards the sky. At that point of time he looked like the cloud carrying the moon.

The Danavas could no more bear the burden of Balarama, the son of Rohini. Therefore, he started expanding his body. Soon he turned himself into a gigantic form and looked like a cloud — the vehicle of Indra.

The face of the Danava was beaming like the sun,adorned with the five flower bunches as the crown in a cloud.

He had a vast mouth. Similar was the case of his neck. The Danava looked horrible like the god of death. His eyes were rotating like wheel of the cart. He was bending the earth with his feet.

A long garland of flowers, decorated his neck. His costumes and the ornaments were quite long. The valorous Pralamba was advancing with force like фе cloud filled with water.

The great asura kidnapped Balarama - the son of Rohini with great force, in the same way as the god of death - the destroyer of all kidnapps all the creatures, drowns them in the ocean at the time of dissolution.

Having been kidnapped by Pralambasura, Samkarsana looked in the sky as if the black cloud was carrying the moon over its back.

At that point of time Balarama thought mat his life was in danger. Then seated over me shoulders of the Daitya, Balarama spoke to Krishna, “O Krishna, look here, I am being carried by a huge Daitya kidnapping me. He has confused me with his illusion.

The wicked Daitya has expanded himself. Because of his arrogance, his strength has doubled. How should I defeat him?”

Then Krishna who was well aware of the conduct of Balarama, assuring him, spoke smilingly.

It is surprising that you are indulging in human behaviour. The entire universe is your form. You have a divine form and you are secret of all the secrets. Actually you appear in the form of Narayana at the time of dissolution. You just recall your original form. When all the oceans become one at the time of dissolution of the universe, at that point of time, it is you who appear in the form of Narayana, reclining over Sisa. You better visualise the same form yourself.

The sky is your head, water is your image, the earth stands for your feet, fire is your mouth, the wind stands for your breath, while the moon is your mind.

You have thousands of mouths, thousands of bodies, thousand hands and feet, and thousand eyes. Your navel has produced thousands of lotus flowers. You using the sun with thousands of rays as a cakra destroy the enemies.

Whatever, has been displayed by you in the earlier times, the same is being visualise by the people who can search for something which has njpt been mentioned by you earlier?

Whatever is to be known in the world, you have established it already. The tattva which is known by you is beyond the reach or understanding of the gods even.

Your form which pervades in the sky and the one which is a self born one (the same spotless entrnal spotless and formless,) cannot be understood even by the gods. In order to shower your grace on the devotees, you incarnated on earth in a definite form, the same form is adored by the gods.

Even the gods are unaware of your end, therefore you are known as Ananta (endless). You are gross, subtle and one. It is difficult to achieve or understand with the subtle intellegenced.

You are the founding pillar of this world. Having been established on you, the eternal earth, firmly carries the whole world and becomes the source of origin of all the creation.

All the four oceans happen to be your form. You are well aware of the division of four Varnas. You also enjoy the reward of all the four sacrifices of the four lokas.

As I am the soul of all the lokas, so is the case with you. This is my belief. Both of us have the same body. But we are divided into two bodies for the benefit of the people.

I am the eternal Visnu, while you are the eternal Sesa. You happen to be eternal god and the eternal Sesa of the three worlds. Our spiritual body alone contains the mobile and immobile world.

Whatever am I so are you. Whatever are you, I happen to be the same eternal Purusa. Both of us happen to be a single soul, but we have incarnated in form of a person with great prowess.

O lord, why are you sitting in surprise? You get up at once and forcibly kill thus demon. With a powerful first you strike the head of the wicked Danava.”

Vaishampayana said — When lord Krishna revealed the ancient eternal truth, then Balarama, the son of Rohini was infused with the strength of the three worlds.

Then the long armed warrior Balarama, administered a powerful fist over the head of the Daitya.

His skull was blown off and the rest of the head remained stuck to the trunk. Thereafter the Danavaraja fell on earth kneeling and was overpowered by eternal sleep.

As the scene is visible with the shattering of the clouds in the sky, the same sight was visible with the body of Pralamba, which lay on the ground in a shattered condition.

From the injured head of the asura, the streams of blood started flowing like the water mixed with ochre powder flows from the hill top.

Thus killing Pralmbasura, collecting his prowess again, the glorious Balarama, son of Rohini, embraced Krishna.

With the killing of the Daitya at that time, Shri Krishna, the cowhuds, and the gods in the sky pronounced blessings for victory, offered prayer to Balarama.

They said, “The boy suddenly, has forcibly killed such a powerful Daitya.” These words spoken by the gods could be heard repeatedly.

The gods at that point of time gave him the name of Balarama, while remaining in the sky. At the same time the people of the earth came to know about the strength of Baladeva.

The Daitya Pralamba, was invincible from the gods and at the death of the same Daitya Balarama was rightly called as Baladeva.
