Krishna proposes for the adoration of Govardhana

Vaishampayana said: O Janamejaya, listening to the glory of Indra, from the mouth of the elder, Krishna inspite of his being aware of the importance of Indra, spoke to the cowherds.

О Aiya, we are the cowherds dwelling in the forest and the cows are the means of our livelihood. Therefore all of you should be aware that only the cows, the mountains and the forests are the gods for us.

The farmers livelihood is the irrigation or the fields, the sale and purchase is the livelihood of the Vaisyas, and the sources of livelihood of we people is the rearing up of the cows. These are the three divisions of discussion.

The one who possesses a particular type of Vidya, (knowledge), for him the same is the best gods, who should be adored by him appropriately. The same is also beneficial for him.

A person who getting the reward from some one and adores someone else, he faces misfortunes in the present as well as the future births.

The limits of irrigated land in Braj are well known. Beyond the forest, the mountain is situated. The said mountain is our sole refuge.

It is heard that the mountains in this forest also take to any form at will. All of them entering in different bodies, roam about with delight.

They alone entering into the bodies of lions with manes decorating their necks and other wild animals and tigers, frighten the people, who try to cause harm to the forests protecting them at the same time.

Then the gods who can take to any form at will, with their demonic exercises, surely kill such wicked people.

The Brahmanas engage themselves in the performing of the tapas. The farmers perform the Sitayajnas or prough the fields well. The lines which are drawn in the field with the plough-share, are worshipped by them together with the plough itself. The cowherds worship the mountains performing the Giri-yajna. Therefore, we should perform the Giri-yajna in the forest.

О cowherds, I like this only that the Giri- yajna should be started. Reciting the welfare mantras, a spot should be selected under a tree or close to the mountain, which should be quite auspicious. The animals should be collected there. They should be worshipped there collectively. The milk of the entire Braj should be collected in a temple, what do you think about this idea.

Then decorating, the heads of the cows with the flowers of the winter season, should go round Govardhana from the right and then return to Braj.

Presently this is the time for the arrival of the pleasent winter season, when the water and the grass would be quite tasteful for the cows. The clouds, which poured water in the tank have disappeared.

The blossoming Kadamba flowers, the forest appears to be of white colour. At places it looks black because of the growth of shrubs. The grass is no more soft and has become somewhat hard. The cries of he peacocks are no more heard in the forest.

The clouds in the sky, which are deprived of the lines of sky larks, dust, water, and the lightning appear like the elephents without tusks.

With the supply of the fresh water in the rainy season, carried by the wind the leaves were found in large number, making the trees quite thick. The leaves on the trees have been now reduced removing the darkness of trees.

The sky presently looks like a king adorned with a crown over the head, the white clouds serve as his head-dress. Using the swans as the flywhishs, the king was being fanned, while the full moon served as his umbrella.

With the end of the rainy season, the water of all the tanks has started reducing as if the swans had jeered at them and the cranes had denounced them (as a result of which they had squeezed).

The rivers approaching the ocean, with the swans appearing as their laughing, were advancing towards their husband (the ocean). The pairs of ruddy-geese, looked like the developed breasts and both the banks resembled their buttocks.

During the nights innumerable lilies or red lotuses blossom in the water and the sky is filled with countless stars, both of them speak to each other with pride, “My glory is in no way lesser than you.”

The forests in which the sweat notes of the heron are echocing, like the intoxicated humans, where the ears of paddy, appeared like beautiful girls clad in yellow costumes were spreading their white and yellow lustre, besides which display charm like the newly married couples, such forests become quite delightful.

The big and small tanks, the step wells with blossoming lotus flowers, the beds of the fields, the rivers and the lakes were illumining with grace.

The red lotus flowers, the white, yellow, blue and red lotus flowers shared the glory of the water.

The intoxication of the peacocks was over. The wind started blowing slowly. The sky was deprived of the clouds, while the ocean appeared to be quite full.

With the end of the rainy season, the feathers of the peacocks were scattered here and there after the rainy season. The enthusiasm of the dance of the peacock was subsided, and the feathers had been discarded, as a result of which the land appeared to have a large number of eyes.

The grace of the river banks of Yamuna was increased which getting dirty with its own mud in which the reeds were blossoming, where the creepers were spreading, in which the swans and cranes had made their nests here and there.

With the ripening of the ears of paddy, the fields looked quite charming. In their beds of the fields, the birds like cranes and others picked up the seeds of the cereals, while the sky larks and other aquatic animals, caught the fish in the tanks and the rivers, enjoying their sports.

The tender shoots of the cereals which had grown with the water of the rainy season, had become harder with the passing of time.

The moon god, descarding the cloud like costumes, started illumining with the qualities of the winter season and delightfully lived in the sky.

The milk yield of the cows denotles the arrival of the winter season. The bulls are doubly intoxicated. The grandeur and beauty of the forest is also doubled and with the ripening of the crops, the earth appears to possess many qualities.

The minds of the people get delighted by looking at the planets and constallations, which have been relieved of the cover of clouds and the tanks are covered with the lotus flowers.

The sun has been relieved of the clouds in the sky and with the influence of the winter season, it creates sharp sunshine. The sun further sharpening his rays, is sucking the juice of the earth.

The rulers of the earth, making their soldiers to practice armoury, are marching towards other countries, with the desire of victory.

The red bandhuka flowers make the earth look red everywhere, the mud in the forest has been dried up, the sight of which, attracts the mind.

The asana (Teminalia tomentosa) (yellow sandarwood tree), saptaparna, (Alstonia scholaris), Kovidara (Bauhinia variegataj, Vanasana, Nikumbha, Priyaka and the trees known as svaranaka, are blossoming with flowers, which appear quite graceful. The Ketaki trees (Pandarnus odorotissimus) are also seen every where which are also blossoming. The deer and owls are also seen everywhere roaming with delight.

The milk or the curd and the butter, which is poured into the pitchers, stored for their smile. In Braj and cow-pens, the winter season is roaming about in human form like a beautiful damsel.

Surely the gods are walking up the Garuda bannered lord Visnu, who has already enjoyed the sleep with comfort.

At the end of the rainy season and with the growing of the rich crops, the winter season has arrived. Therefore the mountain Govardhana happens to be lord, which has been richly decorated by the birds whith blue like the clouds, white like the moon and of golden colour like the sun. It is getting thick with the trees laden with fruits and looks beautiful like black clouds, the single branch of those trees looks like an abode and which are surrounded by a large number of creepers, spread to far off regions and which look graceful with the blowing of the wind. Therefore we should adore Govardhana and the cows.

The horns of the cows should be decorated with crowns and the peacock feathers, besides the ornaments. The bells should be hung around their necks. The cows should then be worshipped with the flowers easily available in the winter season. The Giriyajna should also be started simultaneously. Let the gods worship Indra while we shall worship Govardhana — the foremost of the mountains.

In case you love me, and in case we are well wishers of one another, then I shall make you forcibly to adore the cows and perform the Goyajna. There is no doubt about it.

In case you feel pleased with my words, then you should agree with me for your own welfare and upliftment. You should act accordingly.”

Here ends chapter — 16, of Visnu Parva of the Harivarhsa Purana, a khilabhaga of the epic of the Mahabharata, relating to the Proposal of Krishna to adore Govardhana.(CVrs. 1-46, P.T. = 3700)
