Description of several types of vratas

Bhagavati Uma said — О Arundhati, the merits by which, this body is made fit to achieve comforts, I am going to relate such tithis (or days) and the merits which accrue therefrom.

О goddess performing the auspicious vratas, a chaste lady, who gives away her one time food to a Brahmana on the dark eighth day of the moon and herself observes the fast, or she consumes the fruits or roots on that day, wearing the white clothes, observing the noble conduct, adores the preceptors and the gods and in this way she observes the same process during full one year, then a fly whisk made of the yak- cow, a flag, supported with daksina and sweets, gives to a Brahmana as per her means, the hair of that lady devoted to her husband, fall below the waist, flow in the air becoming curly at end.

О beautiful one, the lady who desired to provide comforts to the head, such a chaste woman, should mix cowdung, myrobalam, unripe wood apple, and ripe wood apple, should get them mixed in equal quanitity, and applying such a paste over the head should wash it therefore, removing its dirt, should consume the cow’s urine and while taking bath, the water mixed with cow’s urine should be mixed in it. On every fourteenth day of the dark fortnight, this process should be adopted. A woman who does so, never, becomes a widow and her husband always remains alive. The ailments like fever and other do not trouble her. The ailments relating to the head do not attract her.

О Arundhati, with an auspicious smile, a lady who intends to make her forehead graceful, she, on the first day of a fortnight, should consuming food once a day, comprising of cooked rice and milk. She should continue this process for a month, thereafter she should give away to the Brahmana a beautiful costume in charity and by so doing, a damsel with beautiful waist, is posses great beauty and charming face.

О sinless Arundhati, you should meet with welfare, the one who is desirous of beautiful eye brows, such a chaste lady should observe fast on the second day of the fortnight, consuming cooked rice and vegetables, once a day by performing this process for a year and thereafter give away the beautiful ripe fruit with daksina with a gram of gold, salt and a vase filled with ghee to a Brahmana who should recite the welfare mantras.

A damsel who intends to maintain the beauty of her ears, should, on the arrival of Sravana constellation, consume the pudding of the barley flour. After completion of a year, she should get two ears of gold prepared and placing both in the ghee mixed with milk, should give them away to the Brahmanas.

A woman desirous of her nose be connected with forehead and not to be deformed in any way and should be free from deformity remaining charming, then she should water the sesame plants, till they start blossoming. The day from which she starts watering till the day of blossoming of the plants, she should regularly water the plants. After the flowering of the plants, she should take out the flowers and putting them in ghee, give it in charity.

О Arundhati, born of the nectar like moon, a lady who is desirous of having the beautiful eyes, she should consume milk and ghee in food. О goddess with auspicious smile, by continuing the process for a year, she, getting herself decorated with best of garments and ornaments, filling the leaves of white lotus as well as the red lotus, give away to the Brahmanas. О chaste lady, by giving away such a charity, possesses the eyes resembling the black buck.

A religious minded chaste woman desirous of having a beautiful lips, she should take water in earthen pots for a year and sharing the dharma should consume it which she gets without any demand. After the lapse of a year in this way, she should give away a coral in charity.

O auspicious one, by so doing, the woman’s lips become red like the bimba fruit. She also becomes, mistress of fortunes, beautiful, mother of a son, possessing riches as well as the cows.

О damsel of god, one who is desirous of beautiful teeth, such a chaste woman, should on the eighth day of the bright fortnight, discard taking meals on both the time.

О lady well versed in dharma, by continuing the process for a year, such a damsel, should get the teeth made of silver and placing them in milk, should then be given to a Brahmana is charity.

О sinless one, by so doing, such a damsel achieves the teeth, which are white like the lily flowers.

О lady with blossoming face, a lady who is desirous of her whole face to be charming, should take bath on the full moon day, at the auspicious rise of the moon, should give away in charity, the barley cooked in milk. By repeating this process for a year, a beautiful figure of the moon should be got prepared. Then placing it over the lotus flower, make the Brahmana to recite the welfare mantras and then give it away in charity. Such an auspicious lady, with the influence of that charity would possess the charming face resembling the moon.

A woman derious of having both her breasts stiff like the fruits of palm tree, should on each tenth day of the fortnight eat the food she gets without asking for it. After completion of the vrata for a year she should give away two beautiful wood apple fruits of gold to a Brahmana, with daksina and by so doing she faces enormous fortunes and the sons. О goddess with the divine fortunes, such a lady always has the raised breasts.

The one who is desirous of having the her waist, she should take food in a lonely place and on the fifth day of a fortnight she should consume food with water alone.

О auspicious and graceful one, thus with the completion of the process for a year, the said lady should give away the blossomed flowers of jasmine, with daksina to a Brahmana.

О lady with slender waist, a damsel desirous of having both her hands beautiful, she should consume all the best of unblemished vegetables, this process should be continued for a year and she should place two golden lotus over two blossomed lotus flowers and give them to a Brahmana with daksina.

О goddess performing the excellent vratas, a woman desirous of developed buttocks, she should take meals without demand on the thirteenth day of a fortnight and should repeat this prowess on the thirteenth day regularly.

After completion of the process for an year, she should give away a heap of salt arranged in the figure of the face of Brahma.

Similarly the face of Brahma made in gold should also be given away in charity. A woman well-versed in dharma, should apply collyrium in the eyes of a Brahmana woman slowly.

О beautiful one, she should also give away gems as well as the red cloth and by so doing she achieves the buttocks as per her liking.

The chaste woman desirous of sweet tongue, should stop consuming salt for a month or a year and should give away the salt with daksina to a Bramana. О spouse of the god, by so doing, her speech would become a hundred times sweeter than the speech of a parrot.

О daughter of the moon, a woman desirous of having beautiful ankles, she on each one of the sixth day of the fortnight, should consume cooked rice with water.

О female ascetic, a woman, performer of such a vrata, should not touch a Brahmana or the fire with her feet. In case it is so done, unintentionally, then she should offer her salutation to both of them.

A woman should not rub foot with a foot, with the performing of these vratas regularly, a damsel should get two tortoises made in gold or silver. О sinless and chaste lady, placing both the tortoises in ghee, they should be given over to the Brahmanas. Besides, two lotus flowers, with their heads hanging down, applying the red colour on them, should give them away to the Brahmanas.

A damsel devoted to her husband, if intends to keep up the beauty of her entire body, she on the appearance of menses should fast for three nights.

She should adore her parents, gods and guests, on the full moon days of the months of Asadha, Kartika and Magha.

Such a damsel devoted to her husband should give away in charity to the Brahmanas the salt and the ghee.

O religious minded one, in order to understand her self interest, a damsel should attend to the jobs of cleaning, plastering and giving offerings to the gods, etc. She should never use foul words.

О lady, she should give presents to the gods and should always speak the truth.
