Rules for performing the Punyaka and other related vratas





Uma said — О goddess, a chaste woman, should perform the vrata in this manner, for a period of one month, six months or a year, controlling all the senses.

In this vrata, eleven chaste women should be invited. I have myself observed this vrata observing all the formalities.

The main lady, who performs the vrata, should invite eleven chaste women and give away charities to them besides the return price.

(From this verse, it is believed that the eleven women who were invited in the house with the permission of her husband, the lady performing vrata used to give away her husband in charity. Thereafter, paying the return sum according to the time and the country, the husband is recovered.) At the end of the month, on the bright ninth day of the moon, the vrata should be concluded after adoring the gods.

For the success of the performing of vrata one should observe a days fast in the begining and a day’s fast at the end of the vrata.

Thereafter she should have her husband shaved and she should cut off her nails etc. on that day the concluding bath of the vrata should be undertaken.

О auspicious one, on the day of Punyaka vrata, the taking of the bath like the one taken at the time of marriage, has been prescribed, one could be decorated in this case wearing the garlands and other make up.

The chaste damsel, having been washed with the water of the pitchers, should offer her salutation at both the feet of her husband or doing it verbally, should recite the mantras.

The supreme goddess of the water, the mother of the divine Rishis, the mother of all the worlds, who emerges from the sky, bestower of bliss, and welfare, moving over the path of dharma, having the complexion of gold, spotless and the one who purifies all, let her bestow grace on me by her nectar like benevolent juice.

О goddess with beautiful limbs, the hymn relating to the water is used everywhere. There are some other hymns prescribed in the Puranas for the taking of both by the ladies, which you please listen from me.

Let me cause welfare to my husband. I should never run short of funds. I should possess all the best of virtues. I should always remain engaged in dharma with my husband. I should remain as a slave of my husband and should attend to even his smallest needs. I should be obedient to my husband and should never get annoyed with him by action, mind and speech.

I should enjoy the highest of the place among the other co-wives, I should have sons, possess fortunes and the beautiful form. There should be free flow of riches in my hand. I should always priase the virtues of others, fully and should never be miserly in this case.

My husband should also have the pleasing face and he should always remain devoted to me. He should always be attentive to me, let both of us love each other like the pair of ruddygeese. We should never get estranged of each other. We should always conduct like the gentle people.

I should achieve the place of the chaste goddess possessing the noble symptoms, who becoming powerful because of her devotion to her husband, purify the races of both the parents as well as the parents- in-law and who maintains the entire world because of her own chastity and dharma.

I have made the earth, wind, water, sky, fire, Ksetrajna, the nature, Mahattva and Ahamkara, as my witnesses. Let them keep in mind, my firm resolve and the vrata.

The sattva and other gums have created the living beings the materialistic body and the related gods who dwell therein should always stand as witness for performing the vrata.

The moon, the sun, yama — the witness of deeds, all the directions besides my soul, should always stand witness to the performing of this vrata of mine.

From the start of the vrata all the articles should be sanctified by muttering these mantras, which have the sanctity of the Puranas.

О auspicious one, after taking her bath, a woman should present two contumes to her husband, which are prepared with the cotton thread spun by her herself. The costumes should be spotless, new, best and of white colour. She should mix up the cotton thread which had herself been spun by her.

О lady with beautiful waist, then the well-read Brahmanas, well-versed in scriptures and other knowledge should be made to sit with her husband. All them then should be served with food suitably.

О goddess Arundhati performer of great tapas, the Brahmanas should also be served as far as possible with the costumes, beds, seats, abodes, cereals, slaves and slave girls, ornaments, all types of eatables, besides the mountains of gems mixed with sesame seeds, as per ones means. If possible, the elephants and the horses should also given, otherwise a cow can be given in charity. The charities should be given as per one’s means.

The salt, butter, sugarcane balls, honey, the images of Uma-Mahesvara-made of gold, should also be given.

О Nandini, similarly all types of fragrant materials, juices, flowers, silver, all types of fruits, paintings and the wooden image should also be given as far as possible.

You can also give away the images of stone, milk curd, ghee, besides the images of dUrba grass. You can also give away may other types of images which you might like to do so.

О lady devoted to your husband, in case of the availability of the fortunes in the house, then according to the approval of the husband, some charities suiting to the time and the occasion should also be given.

О graceful one, a vase filled with sesame seeds should also be given. But nothing should be given without the approval of the husband. With his permission a white cow and a bronze vase should also be given in charity.

О beautiful one, О blissful one, the skin of a black buck, sesame, costumes, mirror, seat of kusa and deer skin should also be given in charity. О lady with beautiful complexion, giving away all these things in charity, all the desires of a women are fulfilled. She becomes foremost among the ladies, has sons become full of fortunes, beautiful, having spotless hands, rich and possess the spotless eyes. With her mere wish she can get such type of girls passing beauty and virtues, beautiful to look at, possessing the astonishing type of virtues. She becomes formost of all, possessing the sons, and she is always filled with humility.

О Arundhati, I was the first to perform this vrata and because of this, it came to be known as Umavrata on earth.

This is the best of all the vratas for the ladies, therefore it should be practiced. О blissful one, with the performing of the charities, as per this vrata, a woman gets all her desired fulfilled.

О beautiful one, because of the virtue of this vrata it, appears as if I have purchased lord Siva. Lord Siva, the creator of the universe, in order to do good to me, had bestowed on me, in earlier times, the title of Patta-Mahisi (the foremost of the women).

At the conclusion of the vrata, the eatable should be distributed. Such of the articles which are frequently used by the ladies should also be given away in charity, suiting to the time and place.

О beautiful one, all the articles of the vrata should be divided equally and should be given to the Brahmanas. Besides the Brahmanas should also be given food as per their desire together with the daksina.

The payasam (rice milk) should be given in this vrata. No other cereal is allowed. No living being should be killed in thus vrata, which has been prescribed in the Puranas as well as Sruitis (Vedas).

O princess of Candra, О auspicious one, now I shall speak about the other vratas, which has been experienced by me by the grace of lord Siva.

О auspicious one, the people of nobility say that the births of all the ladies gets successful after getting a son. Therefore all the ladies desirous of getting a son, should give the kamandalus in charity.

The procedure which has been spelt out earlier, should be followed by a woman desirous of a son, in the months of Jyestha and Asadha or alternatively she should follow it during the month of Asadha only.

After the completion of the vrata in or month or two months, the ladies desirous of having a son, should give away the kamandalu in charity, filling it with sugar or sweet juice.

О sinless and spotless Arundhati like the moon, the kamandalus should also be given away in charity filling them with ghee, milk and water and be given away in charity.

A woman desirous of a son should give away a kamandalu while performing the excellent vrata, to a single Brahmana having controlled his mind, who is well learned and aged, as per her desire.

A women who is desirous of having a daughter, should give away something to the wife of a Brahmana to satisfy her wish one gets a daughter by this way. There is no doubt about it.

The giving of a cow or gold in daksina is highly appriciated. О goddess with auspicious smile, in this vrata a Brahmana should be given something (like a blanket etc) to cover himself.

A women, performing vrata in a clean manner, should also give away a yajfio- pavita during the vrata. The people with intelligence prescribe the giving away of the earthen pots in these types of vratas, in charity.

О auspicious one, the auspicious woman, who always performs the vrata, when desirous of the birth of a son, should give away the water pots (earthen) in Pusya, Hasta, and Sravana constellations and when she is desirous of a daughter, she should donate the earthen pots, in Rohini and other feminine constellations for a year with the approval of her husband. О truthful Arundhati, after the completion of a year, on the full moon day of the month of Karttika, should give away a yajnapavita to a Brahmana. At the end of the vrata which fulfills the desire, a Brahmana should be given a yajnapavita, a kamandalu and the daksina as per one’s means. A virtuous and noble lady who gives away the Brahmana woman the desired things, she attains all her desires.

While performing the Vrata, a woman should not consume any new or fresh fruit during the period of the vrata.

O lady well versed in dharma, she should take food once in a day, the Punyaka vrata should be performed. The food should be served first to the Brahmana and then to the husband.

Conducting herself in this way for a year, a woman is bestowed with fortunes, beauty and remaining with her husband alive, she achieves enormous riches.

A woman who does not eat brinjals for a year, she can never witness the destruction of her son. You take it for granted.

A woman should discard taking of the meat of rabbit, deer, or livinge beings for ever. Such a woman, is saved from the untimely death or short life and she always has her husband living on earth.

A woman who is desirous of comforts from her husband should discard eating of gourd, or rainy creeper, stem of potherb, or the fruit of the wild fig tree.

Thus after the completion of one year all the vegetable should be donated offering daksina at the same time, with respect. A woman who conducts accordingly, does not have co-wives, has a son and becomes foremost of all the ladies.

Those of the ladies who wash their feet themselves right from the beginning, they always achieve fame and they never get excited.

O goddess with divine glory, when the chaste woman, manages for full one year with the cereals purified by the sun, and does not take food during the night, she gets sons with long life and commands over the other co-wives there is no doubt about it.

After the completion of one year, one should give away in charity to a Brahmana, a gold image of Siirya.

Or otherwise, the said woman performing vrata should give away in charity, fruits, flowers and other eatables before the sunset.

O excellent one, a chaste woman, who undertaking a vrata in the foresaid manner, consumes the auspicious food and other eatables after sunset getting purified by the moon and the constellations, then after the completion of a year, she should give away to the Brahmanas, the gold figures of the moons, constellation and the planets. She should also give away the best of clothes to them.

Such a woman (who does so) has the body peaceful like the moon, has the divine grace in the body which is virtuous, good looking, mother of a son, and is devoted to her husband.

Such a benevolent woman, with the rise of full moon, should offer oblation to the gods with Kusa grass and unbroken rice, besides arghya, curd and barley food. A woman who acts accordingly every day, all her desires are fulfilled.

A chaste woman, does not take food without having a look at the sun, even in the cloudy weather, she achieves her desired wishes.

Such an intelligent and chaste woman should give away gold to a Brahmana in charity according to her means and by so doing she becomes chaste, good looking possessing the divine lustre.
