Defeat of Nikumbha by Jayanta, killing of Nikumbha, and Shri Krishna’s return to Dvaraka

Vaishampayana said — О lord of the people, О Janamejaya, after the imprisoning of all the rulers with their courtiers in the cave, all the asuras were overpowered with delusion.

Shri Krishna, Balarama, and other terrific Yadava warriors kept on killing the asuras, as a result of which all of them fled in all the directions.

Observing this Nikumbha — the best of the Danavas was killing with rage and he said to his soldiers, “why are you fleeing from the battle ground, breaking your vow getting nervous and frightened?

To which loka would you proceed after breaking your vows, for taking revenge, without repaying the debt of your kiths and kins and turning your back?

By heartlessly overpowering the enemy in the battlefield, you will enjoy the best fruits in the world, or otherwise, facing death in the battle field the valorous soldiers attain comfortable place in the heaven.

О Daityas, in case you flee, then to whom are you going to face at home or how can you show your face at home? What will you speak to your wife. Disgrace to you. Are you not ashamed?”

О Naresvara, at these word of Nikumbha, the asura soldiers returned to the battle ground, feeling ashamed and started fighting with the enemy with double the strength.

О king, such of the demon warriors, equipped with the different types of arms, and weapons when waged the war, when moved towards the yajna-mandapa, they were killed by Arjuna, Bhima, Nakula, Sahdeva besides Yudhisthira. Such of the demons who flew in the sky were killed by Jayanta and Pravara.

Then a stream of blood started flowing like a stream flood due to rains. The blood of the demons served as its water, their heads and hair were the watery plants, and grass. The chariot wheels appeared like the tortoises, while the chariots looked like the whirlpools. The caracaes of elephants looked like the mountain rocks. The spears and flags gave the impression of the trees on the banks. The cries of the warriors were the sound of the flow of water. The river of blood had its origin in Shri Krishna and caused panic in the heads of fearful people. The foams were the bubbles, while the swords looked like the fish and the waves of the water.

Nikumbha then observed the advance of the enemy and the destruction of all his associates. Then he jumped upwards with force.

О Bharata, Nikumbha, while so moving in the sky, was spotted by Jayanta and Pravara with the shooting of their vajra like arrows. The invincible Nikumbha then returned biting his lips. Tflen attacked Pravara with a parigh as a result of which he fell down on earth.

Jayanta — the son of Indra lifted up Pravara from the ground and he embraced him. When he reached that Pravara was still alive, then he leaving him rushed towards Nikumbha.

He then attacked Nikumbha with his sword. The Daitya also attacked Jayanta in retaliation with a sword.

The son of Indra, then badly wounded the body of Nikumbha in the battle ground. When he was so fighting with Jayanta, Nikumbha thought, that he should fight with Shri Krishna, because he was his enemy and the killer of his kiths and kins. He thought that he would earn no grace by meeting his death at the hands of Jayanta.

With this resolve, the immensely strong asura, disappeared from that place and then went to the spot, where Shri Krishna was present.

Finding Jayanta having reached in the battle grounds, Indra too reached their mounted over the back of Airavata. At that point of time, he was quite happy with the gods.

Praising Jayanta, Indra embraced him. When Pravara regained his consciousness, he was also embraced by Indra.

With the victory of Jayanta in the battle ground, the kettledrums of the gods were sounded.

Nikumbha found that Shri Krishna, who was invincible in the battleground, was standing with Arjuna, at a little distance from the yajna-mandapa.

Then he forcefully attacked them creating a lion’s roar, with an awful parigha over Garuda — the king of birds, Balarama and Satyaki.

Simultaneously, the valorous asura attacked Shri Krishna, Arujna, Bhlma, Yudhisthira, Nakula, Sahdeva and Samba — the son of Krishna besides Pradyumna.

О son of Bharata’s race, when the divine weapons of Arjuna, shot at the demon became infructions, he asked Shri Krishna, “What is all this happening?

О son of Bharata’s race, the forceful Daitya was fighting with illusion and because of this warriors well versed in the war, were unable to locate him.

When they were unable to spot the asura king, the lord Krishna mentally thought of Bilvodakesvara.

Soon thereafter, he spotted the demon Nikumbha, because of the influence of Bilvodkesvara.

It is body was as vast as a mountain. He was standing in a position as if he would swallow all of them. He was challenging Shri Krishna who had destroyed all his kiths and kins. At that point of time Arjuna, who had already a strong the Gandlva bow, shot arrows at his chariot and limbs.

О Naresvara, all the arrows of Arjuna, which had been sharpened over the rocks, besides the parighas were broken after striking the demon’s body and fell down on earth.

О son of Devaki, my vajra like arrows shatter the huge mountains to pieces (but have become in fractions over the demon). What is all this? I feel extremely suprised at this.”

The Shri Krishna said smilingly, “This is the illusion demon of Nikumbha. You listen about his story in detail.”

In earlier times this awful demon had performed hard tapas in the Uttarakuru country for a lakh of years.

Then the lord Siva had asked him to seek for a boon. Then he demanded three forms of his body from lord Mahadeva, which were invincible from the gods and the asuras.

Then bull bannered lord Siva said —»O great asura in case you antagonise myself, Brahmanas and lord Visnu, then you would be killed at the hands of Shri Hari and not from anyone else, because myself and Visnu both are well wishers of the Brahmanas and are the refuge for them.

О son of Pandu, he is the same demon who is required to be destroyed, but has become arrogant and invincible, because of the boon he got for Siva.

At the time of the abduction of Bhanumatx, I had destroyed one of his bodies. The invincible Satpura is his second body.

His ascetic body is engaged in the service of Diti. The body by which he lives in Satpura is a different one.

О valorous one, I have thus narrated to you the story of Nikumbha. Therefore, you be quick in killing him. The story can be narrated later.”

When Shri Krishna and Arjuna were thus talking, but at the same time the terrific demon entered the cave named Satpura.

O son of Kuru race, following the demon, Shri Krishna also entered the cave following him, known as Satpura which was invincible and horrible.

No light of the sun or the moon was available there. The cave illumined by its own lustre and caused the pleasure and pain besides heat and cold to the dwellers of that place.

О Naresvara, entering the cave, lord Krishna spotted the Yadava warriors, who had been taken prisoners. Then he started fighting with the awful asura.

With the permission of Mahatma Shri Krishna, Balarama and other warriors also entered the cave, together with all the Pandavas.

Nikumbha started fighting with Shri Krishna, while at the instance of Shri Krishna, Pradyumna, got all the captive Yadava warriors released, who had been taken prisoners by Nikumbha.

Having been released with the efforts of Pradyumna, all the delightful warriors moved on for the killing of Nikumbha, where he was engaged in fight with Shri Krishna.

Then the rulers who had been taken prisoners by Nikumbha prayed to Pradyumna, for their release. Thereafter, the glorious one released those kings as well from the bondages.

All those rulers silently stood there lowering their heads. They had lost the grace and were feeling shameful.

Lord Govida — the remover of the sins, was fighting with the powerful demon Nikumbha in order to defeat him.

О lord, then Nikumbha made a fearful attack on Shri Krishna, with a parigha. Shri Krishna also badly wounded Nikumbha with his club.

Then both of them fainted with the attacks over each other. At this the Pandavas as well as the Yadavas felt extremely painful. Observing the situation, the sages started performing Japan (recitation of mantras) for the victory of Shri Krishna. All of them adored Shri Krishna with vedic studs.

Then Lord Kesava regained his senses as if regaining his life. Thereafter, the Danava also regained his senses. Both of them again got ready for waging the war.

О Bharata, both of them thundered like the bulls, trumpted like the elephants, howled like the wolves and attached each other in great anger.

О Naresvara, at that point of time the divine voice from the sky, addressing Shri Krishna said, “The demon is a thorn for the gods as well as the Brahmanas. You should destroy him with the use of your cakra.”

This declaration was made by the lord Bilvadokesvara himself. By killing this demon, you will earn, immense glory besides the merits on dharma.

The Shri Krishna, the lord of the universe, offered his salutation to lord Bolvado- kesvara and shot the Sudarsana-cakra at the demon Nikumbha.

With the shooting of the Sudarsana - cakra from the hand of Shri Krishna, which was shining like the solar disc, it cut off the head of Nikumbha which was adorned with kundalas or ear rings.

The head of Nikumbha which was adorned with kundals, fell on the ground, like a peacock getting intoxicated because of the clouds, falls on the ground.

О lion among the humans, At the death of Nikumbha, who terrified the world, the omnipresent lord Bilvodakesvara was immensely pleased.

Indra showered the rain of flowers from the sky. With the destruction who was the enemy of the gods, the gods sounded the kittle drums.

The entire universe was filled with delight. The sages and the ascetics became particularly pleased. Lord Krishna gave away hundreds of Daityce girls to Yadavas.

Lord Shri Krishna repeatedly assured the other rulers as well and gave them the best of costumes as well as the gems.

Shri Krishna the elder brother of Gada, delightfully presented to the Pandvas six chariots with steed.

Then lord Gurudadhvaja, the developer of the city, gave away the city of Satpura to the Brahmana named Brahmadatta.

At the completion of the yajfia the immensely valorous lord Krishna sent off the Ksatriyas and Pandavas and then performed a festival in honour of the lord Bilvadake- svara in which the pulp of fruits, pulses and several other cereals were used in feeding the people while serving food to them.

Shri Krishna who had controlled his mind, organised the wrestlers of Yadu’s race and gave the enormous riches, besides the costumes.

Thereafter the valorous Shri Krishna offered his salutation to the Brahmana Brahmadatta with his parents and other Yadavas and then proceeded on to Dvaraka.

On the way, he accepted the salutations of other people entered the city of Dvaraka which was filled with well-built people, where the flowers had been spread on the roads to welcome them.
