War between Indra and Shri Krishna’s forces

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, thereafter, when two ghadls passed after the sun rise, the immensely illustrious Shri Krishna went to the Raivataka mountain, on the pretext of hunting the wild animals.

Lord Krishna, the ornament of the race of Kuru, mounted over a chariot with Satyaki, commanded Pradyumna also to follow him and reached the Raivataka mountain. Thereafter he said to his charioteer Daruka.

«O noble Daruka, you wait for me till midday here, controlling the horses, 0 best of the charioteers, I shall re-enter Dvaraka seated in the chariot.”

Thus giving instructions to Daruka, the intelligent and valorous Daruka, mounted over Garuda with Satyaki.

О son of the Kuru race, king, Pradymna, the destroyer of enemies, also followed Shri Krishna boarding an aerial chariot.

The intelligent Shri Krishna, in order to usurp the tree of Parijata, reached the Nandavana, in the twinkling of an eye.

Then Lord Visnu found the invincible soldiers of gods, protecting the forest, they was equipped with several types of the weapons. О son of Bharata’s race, Shri Krishna, the refuge of the noble people, in full view of the divine warriors, uprooted the Parijata tree and loaded it over the back of Garuda.

The Parijata tree, appeared in human form before Shri Krishna. О Bharata, at that point of time, Parijata tree appeared in human form before Shri Krishna. О Bharata, then Vasudeva-Kesava, assuring Parijata said to him, “O tree, donot be afraid.”

Carrying the Parijata tree with him, Shri Krishna took a round of the city of Amaravatl.

О Naresvara, the guards of the Nandanvana, reported the matter to Indra, saying, “O Devaraja, Parijata, the best of the trees has been carried away.”

On hearing this the influential Indra moved on mounted over his elephant Airavata. Jayanta, mounted over a chariot followed him.

When Kesava reached the eastern gate of Indrapuri, then spotting him, Indra said, “O Madhusudana, what have you done?

Then Krishna continuing sitting over Garuda offered his salutation to Indra spoke to Indra, “O Devaraja, your daughter in daw, is desirous of the tree and to fulfill her desire, I am carrying the tree for here.”

Then Indra said, “O lotus eyed Acyuta, this cannot be done like this. You should not carry the tree without a fight.

О valorous Kesava, you better attack on me first, you fulfil your vow by shooting your Kaumadigada on me.”

О son of Bharata’s race, then Shri Krishna, smilingly shot sharp arrows at the elephant Airavata and wounded him.

Then Indra, the holder of vajra wounded Garuda, with his sharp arrows. He also cut off the powerful arrows of Kesava.

Whatever arrows were shot by Davendra, were destroyed by Madhava, while the arrows shot by Shri Krishna were destroyed by Indra the killer of Bala and Vrtra demons.

О son of Kuru race, with the sound produced with the stringing of the bow of Indra as well as the Saranga bow of Shri Krishna, all the dwellers of the heaven were confused.

When the battle between the two was going on, at the same time Jayanta got ready to forcibly take away the Parijata tree loaded over the back of Garuda.

Then Shri Krishna the destroyer Kamsa said to Pradyumna, “You stop him.” At the command of Shri Krishna, the son of Rukmini, stopped Jayanta.

Jayanta, who was the best of the victorious warriors, was seated in his chariot at that point of time. He shot some arrows smilingly and wounded the body of Pradyumna over all his limbs.

Pradyumna — the incarnation of cupid, having lotus like eyes was seated in his chariot. He shooting the poisonous arrows, wounded Jayanta, badly.

О son of Kuru race, a terrific war was fought between Jayanta and Pradyumna.

In case one was the son of Mahendra, the other was the son of Upendra. Both of them were the best archers of the world, besides being valorous. Both of them neutralised the arrows shot by other.

All the gods, sages, siddhas, and caranas witnessed the astonishing war with surprise.

О son of the race of Kuru, than the message of the gods, known by the name of Pravara, again tried to snatch away the Pdrijdta tree.

О son of the Kuru race, Pravara was well — versed in arms, and was a friend of Indra. He became invisible because of the boon from Brahma.

О Naresvara, then said Brahmana, after his success in tapas had gone to the heaven from Jambudvipa. Because of his strength, Pravara, became friendly with Indra — the killer of the demon Bala.

Finding him so approaching, Shri Krishna said to Satyaki, “O Satyaki, you stop the advance of Pravara, seated here, shooting the arrows.

You need not shoot arrows on him with a cruel mind. Let us bear the excesses of this Brahmana gracefully.

О valorous one, thereafter the Brahmana named Pravara, wounded Satyaki, who was seated over Garuda, by shooting sixty arrows.

О Naresvara, then the man lion Satyaki the lion among the humans and the grandson of Sini, cut off the bow and arrows of the Brahmana and spoke to him, this.

“O Pravara — Brahmana, you ate not suitable enough to be killed by me. Therefore hold on your position. Hold on. The people of the race of Yadus, treat Brahmanas as unfit to be killed, even when they cammit crime against them.

О son of the Kuru race, then Pravara smilingly said to Satyiki, “O valorous of the human warriors, it is no need for you to forgive me. You fight in the war, with all the force at your command.

О valorous Yadava, I am also the disciple of Parasurama, the son of Jamadagni and am known by the name of Pravara. I am the friend of Indra.

О great warrior of the race of Madhu, the gods respect MadhusUdana and therefore do not intend to fight with him. Therefore, I have arrived here to repay for the friendship of Indra.”

О Naresvara, a lion among the people, thereafter, the Brahmana and Satyaki fought a terrific battle in which the divine weapons were used. The war went on increasing.

With the start of the terrific battle О king, with the start of the battle between the two warriors the entire heaven felt disturbed. Thousands of aerial birds were shaken.

In the battle ground, Praydumna, the son of Krishna, could not get a lead from Jayanta — the best of warriors. Similarly Jayanta too could establish his superiority over Pradyumna the son of Shri Krishna.

О best of the rulers, in order to be victorious over the other, they kept on fighting saying, “you have it”, reply to my attack.”

Thereafter Jayanta, the son of Sad, addressing Pradyumna, the son of Krishna, said, shot a divine arrow over him.

Finding the divine arrow fast approaching him. Pradyumna, created a net of arrows and stopped the weapon of Jayanta in the same way. This was quite a strange thing that happened.

О son of Kuru’s race, then Pradyumna, who standing at the start of the battle ground, faced a terrific divine weapon, which fell on his chariot.

О Naresvara, with the fall of the divine weapon, the chariot of Pradyumna, went in flames and was reduced to ashes but it could do no harm to Pradyumna.

О lord of the people, inspite of the fire being terrific in flames, it cannot burn the other fire. Thereafter, Pradyumna, got himself separated from the burnt chariot.

Thereafter the son of Narayana, getting deprieved of the chariot, stood in the sky, holding the bow and arrow and said to Jayanta.

“O son of Mahendra, you have shot a divine weapon on me, (it is of no consequence because) hundreds of such weapons cannot kill me.

О son of Indra, you better try as per your education, and display all your prowess and efforts against me today. There is none else better than me to display his prowess in the battle.

With your chariot filled with weapons, when you reached the battle field, I got a bit nervous, but I have fully known your strength. You have very small strength, therefore, presently, I am not at all afraid of you.

You better think of the Parijata tree mentally alone, because it is beyond your strength to touch it with both your hands.

The weapon with which you have burnt out my illusory chariot, I can create thousands of such chariots again with my illusion.”

At these words of Pradyumna, Jayanta shot an other illustrious weapon at Pradyanlna.

Pradyumna, forcefully stopped the weapon with the shooting of his arrows. Thereafter Jayanta shot four divine weapons at a time.

O son of Bharata’s race, all the four weapons, surrounded Pradyumna, the son of Rukmini from all the four sides. Then he shot another arrow by which he stopped Pradyumna’s movement in the sky even.

The arrow resembling the comets shot by Jayanta — the son of Indra, were destroyed by Pradyumna, with the arrows shot by him. Thereafter he shot other arrows which wounded Jayanta.

Observing the firmness and agility of Mahatma Pradyumna, the auspicious souls — the gods, uttered a loud joyous roar.

О son of Bharata’s race, SatyakI — the ornaments of Sini - family shooting a sharp arrow, cut off the bow and the gloves of Pravara.

Thereafter, Pravara, picked up an excellent bow, which created deafening sound, while stringing it, which was received by him from Indra.

Making use of that bow, Pravara, shot several types of arrows from the same, which looked like the sun rays.

Pravara, with the use of the new bow, cut off the bow of the illustrious Satyaki and deeply wounded all his limbs.

О son of the race of Kuru, then Satyaki held another bow in his hand, which could bear the others weight and was quite strong. Then he started wounding Pravara with his arrows.

Both of them shooting sharp arrows cut off the coats of arms of each other, and then they started tearing out the flesh from each other’s body.

At the same time, valorous Pravara, cut the bow of Satyaki with an arrow of eight blades. Then he shot three other arrows wounding him at the same time.

Satyaki was about to hold another bow, when the swift moving Pravara, shot a club over Satyaki.

Then Satyaki held the sword and the shield in his hands. He had been badly wounded with the club. Therefore intelligent warrior did not make use of the bow and arrow.

Finding Satyaki being weaponless. Pravara, shot hundreds of arrows at him.

Then Pradyumna, gave him a sword like the spotless sky, but Pravara cut off that sword as well shooting a spear.

Pravara smilingly, had cut off the grip of the sword, which fell down on earth and with the shooting of the straight and sharp arrows shattered his shield as well.

Thereafter, the Brahmana shot Satyaki at his chest. Then he started roaring like a lion. Finding that Satyaki had been upset somewhat, Pravara, with the intuition of usurping Parijata, drove his chariot close to Garuda.

At that point of time Garuda with his wings thew away Pravara, at a distance of two kosas. Pravara fell there with his chariot and was fainted.

Then Jayanta rushed towards Pravara, and assuring the Brahmana placed him in the chariot again.

Satyaki too started fainting again and again, falling on the ground at the same time. Then Pradyumna, lifted up his uncle Satyaki and assuring him variously embraced him.

At that point of time, Madhusudana, Shri Krishna touched Satyaki with his left hand, as a result of which he was at once relieved of the pain in his body.

Thereafter Pradyumna stood to the right of Parijata, while Satyaki stood to its left. Both of them were well versed in the battle field.

In the meantime Jayanta and Pravara also reached there riding in one and the same chariot. At that point of time Mahendra, spoke to both of them smilingly.

Neither of you should go near Garuda in any case, who is the lord of birds and quite powerful.

Both of you should stand on my right and left and look after me at the time of fight.”

At these words of Indra, both of them took their position, besides Indra. Then both Indra and Shri Krishna started a fight.

Then Indra, who created sound like the vajra started shooting arrows and other weapons over the limbs of Garuda.

Then taking little care of the arrows shot by Indra, Garuda — the destroyer of enemies and the son of Vinata moved towards Airavata — the elephant of Indra.

Then Garuda, unmindful of the weapons shot at him by Indra, advanced towards the elephant — the mount of Indra. Suddenly both Garuda and the elephant came in conflict with' each other. Both of them possessed enormous strength and were invincible.

At that point of time the trampeting Airavata the king of the elephants, deeply injured Garuda, with his trunk, head and tusks.

Similarly the immensely strong Garuda, with his sharp claws, nails and wings attacked the elephant of Indra.

The fight between the elephant and the bird continued for two gadls (forty four minutes) which was astonishing for the world and was frightening to the viewers.

О Bharata, the immensely valorous Garuda, using his nails as ankusas, with his awful feet, attacked Airavata over his head.

O Janamejaya, feeling painful with the attack to Garuda, Airavata fell from the heaven over the Parijata mountain.

The valorous Indra, because of compassion, friendship and because of the earlier vow, not to leave his company, could not discard the falling elephant.

The eternal Shri Krishna, who is the cause of the universe, valorous and learned Shri Krishna too reached the Parijata mountain following Indra.

Indra, the destroyer of Vrtrasura reaching the Pariyatra mountain, stood over it. О best of the race of Kurus, after Airavata took some rest, the battle between Indra and Shri Krishna started again. Both the sides shot at each other, the poisonous arrows some of which were studded with gems.

О king, о Naresvara, then Indra — the holder of vajra attacked Garuda with his vajra again and again.

The invincible Garuda — the best of the birds, tolerated the attack of Indra with the vajra and missiles, because of his natural instinct.

Then Garuda — the son of Kasyapa, extending due respect to the vajra and the missile, dropped a feather at every strikes by Indra — his own brother.

О king, with the attack of Garuda, the Pariyatra mountain was shattered from all the sides and sunk in the ground.

With the heavy burden of Shri Krishna the mountain appeared like crying. Then Shri Krishna the form of Visnu, looked at it, only a part of which was left over ground.

Observing this, Shri Krishna the creator of all, leaving the mountain stood in the sky riding on Garuda and spoke to Pradyumna.

“O valorous one, depending on my strength and prowess, you go to Dvaraka and bring here my chariot with the charioteer Daruka.

О excellent one, you infrom the king Ugrasena of Kukura dynasty as well as Balarama, that I shall return to Dvaraka, after becoming victorious over Indra tomorrow.”

О Bharata, the auspicious Pradyumna, saying, ‘Very well”, to his father, proceeded on to Dvaraka. He conveyed the message to the king Ugrasena as well as Balarama mounted over the chariot yoked by Daruka and returned to the appropriate place in a ghadi.

Here ends chapter — 73, of Visnu Parva of die Harivarhsa Parana, a khilabhaga of the epic of Mahabharata, relating to the war between Indra and Shri Krishna. (Vrs. 1-105, P.T. =’ 7284)
