Shri Krishna deputes Narada as messenger to Indra, again, Indra consults Brahaspati and the sage Kasyapa prays to Siva to avert war





Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, Narada, reached the pleasent city of Dvaraka and met Narayana — the foremost of all the humans.

He was comfortably lodged in his abode with Satyabhama and his body was filled with best of splendeur.

Mahatma Krishna, who followed his vratas forcefully, was thinking about Parijata itself and was verbally assuring. Satyabhama, his wife.

On the arrival of Narada, Shri Krishna, got up at once and he adored Narada accord­ing to the provisions of the scriptures.

When he was comfortably lodged over his seat, and was relieved of his fatigue, then MadhusUdana Krishna enquired about Parijata from Narada.

О Janamejaya, then the great escetic, narrated the entire happening in the heaven with Indra. He also conveyed to Shri Krishna the message of Indra.

On hearing the words of Narada, Shri Krishna said to him, “O best of the religious minded sages. I shall proceed to Amaravati tomorrow.”

Thus speaking Shri Hari, went to the sea shore with Narada, and gave a message to the sage in seclution.

“O great Tapasvl, you go to the palace of Indra, today itself, you offer my salutation to Indra - the best of gods, and tell him on my behalf, ”0 Indra, you would not be able to stand me in war. You must be aware of the fact that I have firmly resolved to carry Parijata from the heaven.”

At these words of Shri Krishna, Narada proceeded to the heaven. Reaching there, he explained everything to the immensely illustrious Indra, whatever was spoken to him by Shri Krishna.

О son of Kuru race, then Indra — the destroyer of Balasura, communicated all about the matter to Brhaspati — the preceptor of the god, listening to which the divine priest said.

“Disgrace to you О Indra I had gone to Brahmaloka for sometime and in the mean time you started evil performance. Because of your performance, the opportunity of a big row has arrived.

О lord of the universe, what was the reason, that you started the misadventure, without asking me?

О Indra, the destroyer of Vrtrasura, the entire world is influenced with the future karmas. It is difficult to avert whatever has been destined by the destiny.

It is not proper to start something suddenly. Whatever have you started suddenly it is sure to jeopardise your prestige.

Then Mahendra said to Brhaspati the preceptor of the gods, “O preceptor, you tell me whatever has to be done by me in the present situation.

On hearing this, the Mahatma Braspati, who knew well about the past and the future, lowering his head for sometime, thought over the matter and said.

“О Devendra, now you, accompanied with Jayanta, go to the battle ground, fight with Shri Krishna and try to be victorious over him. In the mean time I shall try my best for solving the problem in a judicious way,”

Thus speaking, Brhaspati went to the shore of the ocean of milk and talked with the sage Kasyapa in detail.

On hearing that Kasyapa felt enraged and he said, “The war would surely be fought. It will surely happen. There is no doubt about it.

О Maharsi, Ruci the wife of Devasarmd was of auspicious conduct like him, but Indra tried to achieve her, as a result the sage Devasarmd, thought ill of Indra, who has to suffer for the same sin.

О sage, for the removal of the sin, “I had started performing this tapas in the water, but this terrific sin has excercised its influence.

О great ascetic, therefore I shall go with Aditi as a mediator. In case the destiny be favourable then I shall be able to avert the war from both sides.”

Thereafter the auspicious Brhaspati spoke to Kasyapa — the son of Marici — “O Tapodhana, the war is going to start, therefore, you should be present there.”

Kasyapa said: ‘Very well”. Then he sent off Brhaspati from that place and he himself went to adore Siva, the lord of goblins.

On the other hand the intelligent lord Kasyapa, adored, the peaceful lord Siva, having a banner of bull.

At that point of time Kasyapa — the son of Marici adored lord Siva with the Vedic hymns as well as the verses composed by himself.

Kasyapa said — The one who in the form of Vamana incarnation of Visnu, extending his great foot, could measure the three worlds, the entire world is whose field of activity, the one who is Isvara or the surpreme lord of all, is the creator of the universe, who could be met by means of dharma, the one who is the master of all the desires and also their fulfiller who represents the form of all, is the auspicious abode of the yogis (ascetics) possessing the auspicious patience, (I offer my salutation to) such a lord of the universe taking refuge with him.

The one who is the lord of gods, and is the remover of the sins, the one who pervades in the universe, being its form, the one who kept, the auspicious water in his belly, I take refuge with the lord of the universe.

The one who taking to the form of ayatf (as ascetic) and had destroyed the wolves sent by wolves, who could subjugate the friends. The one having the deformed eyes, the one who is beautiful to look at with an auspicious body, I take refuge with such lord Visvesvara, and offer my salutation to him lowering my head.

The one who is the lord of the universe, maintains the excellent universe, the one who is the abode of the sun and the moon in the form of his eyes and being Sukrti (the performer of noble deeds) is invincible from all, the one who enjoys the highest and glorious position among the ascetic who consume the soma juice as well as the moon rays, let the same eternal Siva, feed me with unfading glory.

The one who has been established by Atharvaveda, who possesses five beautiful heads in the form of five kasas, who is the cause of all the bhutas, the one who obstructs the valorous Danavas, is immensely learned, for whom the war is the offering in the fire, who is the form of havisya of yajnas, I take refuge with such a Visvesvara.

The one on whom the world has spread like the magic, the one who is the soul of the entire world, the one who moving in the aerial magic, who is the soul of the universe, who loves those who take refuge with him and the one who travels by the aerial chariot, let the same lord Visvesvara always be pleased with me.

The one who resides in all as the inner soul, the one who is resplendent, from whom, the Vedic Sakhas, have emerged. Who is immensely valorous, founder of dharma and is adorable, the one who has thousands of eyes, who can be achieved by hundreds of ways, I offer my salutation to such lord Mahadeva, who is creator of the universe, and having the voilent form.

The one who is achieved through Suci (auspicious or asanga) yoga, who established different forms of yoga, being sinless, destroys, source of comfort, bestower of welfare, lord of all the bhiitas, who alone carries the burden of the universe, has controlled the sense oragans, who adorns his head with the crescent moon as a symbol, who is the refuge of the organs of the knowledge, I offer my salutation to such a lord Siva lowering my head, taking refuge with him.

The one who yields expeditious rewards, pacifies the blemishes like lust and others, fulfills all the desires, the early morning sound of the place of sacrifice, the yajha - dharma, put in practice, the one in case adorned for some desire, becomes fruitless and after the enjoying of the rewards, it vanishes quickly, but the same dharma, when performed without any desire, it purifies the soul, earns the treasure of merits — you are the form of both the dharmas. You remain unmoved in both the situations. You are the performer of the excellent vratas, therefore I take refuge with Rudradeva — the carrier of a trident.

There is no end to your strength and powers, you are the witness of all the deeds. You are not the part of yajha like the gods. You happen to be the source of origin of all. The yajha-Purusa, adored by the performers, you happen to be the supreme lord for them. You are the form of Agni — the consumer of havisya of the world and you are also the excellent Brahman, I therefore take refuge with you.

You are the form of Visnu and beyond the gunas, you are omnisceint like the glory. You pervading the universe, have been raised up like a horn. You develop the limbs of all the living beings soundly. You have an extremely pleasent form you are spotless, selfconscious and the abode of truth. You divert the wicked people towards delusion, I offer my salutation to you.

You are the form of Pranava or orhkara, you are the ardhamatra of orhkara your own form. Your deeds which are devoid of voilence are quite pleasent. You perform the vrata with firmness. Your bow is quite strong. You shoot arrows at long distance, you are valorous, well — versed in archery, and foremost of those who use weapons. You are the lord of all the animals or the living beings, destroyer of the world. I offer my salutation to lord Siva.

Who is the solitary friend of all, who is represented in the past and the future, who consumes the havisyu poured by all in the fire, you are the destroyer of kama (desires or the god of love) and cause pain to the Raksasas who are inimical. There is none better than you, Let lord Mahddeva protect me, who distributes the share of yajha and also enjoys a part of the same. Let the same lord Siva protect me.

The Jagdisvara, who being one is pervading in the entire world, the one who is the unique supreme soul, had given life to Marudganas, who are themselves the life of the world. He is the one, who being merciful has established friendship with all the living beings, let the same lord Siva, for the performing of an excellent task and welfare, be merciful on me.

The one, who being Brahma has created excellent bhuvanas in all the lokas, who being learned knower of Brahman, possesses all the six gunas, he getting established in mystic sound, has created the universe and he himself resides therein. He takes to many forms, is the destroyer of the enemeis like the lust, should protect me with all his limbs.

The one who educates in absolute, is beyond birth, learned and is the form of all, besides being all pervading and touches everyone, bestower of grace and giver of life, the one who wears the elephant hide over his body instead of costumes, who has the eternal blissful form, the one who feeds the air also, remaining with the husband and wife and living with them, inspiring them, performs the yajnas and other activities, who has the essence of the tattvas, let the same lord Siva protect me.

The one who has three eyes, is the supporter of all, discourses the Brahmanas as well as the learned people on dharma. Besides this, he bestows the desired boon to the performers of the yajnas, the one who is foremost of the best, is always victorious in war, who is the lord of Isvara as well as the god, I take refuge with such a lord Rudra.

The one who is the fire standing for the mouth of gods, is the destoryer of the wicked people, who with the reciting of Trivrata and other stome as somayaga etc shatters the tree of universe, is the witness of the deeds of the people, the source of the absorption of the bhutas, lord of the goblins, the form of Gunas, I take refuge with such Rudradeva.

The one who car. not be uprooted by the strongest of the enemies, the one who completes yajhas, is foremost of the performers, besides the middle and end of them. The one who has been compared with Prakrti, the one who is eulogised in the Vedic vratas in several forms the one who is Isvara for all the living beings from the earth to the heaven, I take refuge with such a lord Rudra.

The one who is clad in the huge elephant skin, is the performer of the Uttama Vrata, is adorned with waistband, gets pleased quite easily, lord of rage, free from sins and sufferings, the eternal siddha, lord Siva virtuous, having the matted locks of hair, the adorable by the adorable people, I offer my salutation to lord Siva.

The one who is the god of gods, is auspicious to the auspicious ones, creation of all the creations, yajha of all the yajhas, who is the greatest of all the great people, has a peaceful form, controller of all the sense organs, is adorable by the gods, feeds them all, I therfore after my salutation to lord Rudradeva.

He is antaryami dwelling in the hearts of all the living beings and is also called Guhya, the one who is devoid of all other lights (is self resplendent), he has the form of Pranava (omkars), I offer my salutation to the said benevolent lord Siva.

She one who himself is the form of the world as well as its living beings still because of his being free from all the causes, he has no form of his own. He is quite subtle in form. He is separated from all the bhhtas and is not separate from them as well because of his being inseparable from them. The one who himself appeared in the form of the entire worlds and who is absorber of all, who is the best donator besides being the form of task, delight and the pleasent gem, let the same lord protect me.

Because of his residing in the hearts of all, he is the closet to all, and he is closet to all those who perform sadhana. He is the bestower of devotion and knowledge, he is the lord of the noble people and is the supporter of all the six gunas. Let such a lord Siva protect me.

The one who destroys the sins and sufferings of inside and out side, who himself is the creator of the universe and to the reveal himself in the form of Pahca - bhutas, is a habit with him. His prowess is the best of all, the one who is the god of gods, let the same Paramesvra, the auspicious soul, remove my sins and the sufferings.

Those who committed crime against the gods were uprooted by lord Siva like the thorns, he had with his three terrific arrows burnt out the three cities, as a result of which the death of the asuras had become useless who could not be killed with the use of weapons. The one with whose influence, this could happen and the one who is the cause of Prakrti and its refuge as well, he is the foremost of all the Paramesvara, let him protect me.

He is the one who had desired to destroy the increased share of the gods in the yajna of Daksa, by whose efforts the yajna of Daksa was destroyed, then the Yajnesvara of Yajna took refuge with lord Siva, who had been well versed with the performing of the Yajna, was instrumental in the distruction of Daksas Yajna, let the same Mahadeva, the lord of all protect me.

The one who is in the form of Brahma. creates the world and destroys it in the form of Rudra, who happens to be the secret most of all, as compared to others, he is unique in the world. He is graceful because of his possessing the sanskara of salvation. He is the best of all, he is indeed the best who collects merits in yajha for Indra and Agni and is the sole refuge of six guna, like fortunes and others. Let the same Paramesvara protect the progeny and myself.

The supreme soul, whose qualities exist during all the three periods viz:- present, past and future, or in whom, the virtues for the creation, destruction and maintenance always remain, the one who possesses exess of satva- guna, or the one who appears in the form of Visnu, and protects Indra and other — the protectors, the one who takes the trouble of destroying the wicked people, and who feels the world like parents, and getting enraged over the people who cause pain to others, destroy them. Let the same supreme soul protect me.

The one whose part of luster represents Visnu, besides from whom, Brahma and his sons like Maricl and others appeared besides the Brahmarsis, who feeling defeated cannot enter his abode, let the same protector of the noble people, — Mahadeva with Uma, bestow his grace on us.

From whom the sky and the Рапса - bhiitas were born, are preserved and distroyed, let the same lord be pleased with me. A person who getting humiliated from others, taking lord Siva to be the only refuge submits to him, he is the best of the humans who acheives the patience and the grace of Siva and he received the graceful teachings of lord Siva. (Therefore one should take refuge with lord Siva at the time of misery, who would surely remove the same. This is what I believe.

Those of the living beings possessing the linga in their bodies, are surely the forms of lord Siva, having a yoni as the mask in their bodies, they surely represent the goddess Uma. There is nothing else in this world besides these two. There is nothing separate from Uma - the great goddess, They are the protectors of all. Let them protect us as well.

Thus the lord who was being thus enlogised, the same bull-bannered Siva appeared before the Rishi Kasyapa — the best of the sages.

After delightfully appearing before the sage, Siva said, “O Prajapati, the purpose for which you are eulogising me, I am well aware of it.

Indra and Upendra are both intelligent gods shall attain their natural forms. But the auspicious soul Janardana would surely carry Parijata with him.

O Kasyapa, in earlier times Devasarma - the great sage, had thought ill of Mahendra, because Indra had desired for the wife of the sage, when he was engaged in tapas. This would be the cause of his present defeat.

О auspicious one, you go to the place of Indra with Aditi — the daughter of Daksa both of your sons would meet with welfare.

Thus listening to the words of lord Mahadeva, immensely intelligent Kasyapa - the son of Marid, offered his salutation to lord Siva, the preceptor of gods, and retired to the heaven.

Here ends chapter — 72, of Visnu Parva of the Harivamsa Purana, a khilabhaga of the epic of Mahabharata, relating to Shri Krishna’s deputing Narada as a messenger to Indra again, Indra consults Brhaspati prays to Siva to avert war. (Vrs. 1-66, P.T. = 7179)
