Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, all the limbs of Balarama had been plastered with sandal paste and consuming madhu (beverage) he appeared quite pleasent and was filled with grace. His eyes had turned somewhat read. His arms were quite long. He walked gracefully bending over Revati.

He was clad in two blue garments having the colour of the black clouds. His limbs had the white complexion of the moon rays. His intoxicated eyes looked as fatigued. Reaching the mid-ocean, Balarama, looked graceful like the full moon.

His left ear was adorned with a spodess earring. The right ear, was adorned with a lotus flower. Revati-his beloved, wearing a smile over her face was gazing at his face with her curved looks, with comfort. Balarama on his part was feeling graceful with her.

Then at the command of Krishna the killer of Kamsa and Nikumbha, all the beautiful groups of the large hearted apsaras delightfully reached there in the ocean resembling the heaven to meet Revati.

The limbs of all the apsaras were thin like the stick besides being soft and tender. All the divine damsels then offered their salutation to Revatl and Balarama and then started dancing at the tune of the music. The other group of apsaras started singing surrounding them.

All the apsaras, at the command of Revatl as well as Balarama, started sporting variously which was liked by the Yadavas, being purposeful, and appropriate.

The apsaras, on that particular night sang the auspicious welfare stories of Shri Krishna and Balarama in order to delight them.

The pleasent stories of the killing of Karhsa and Pralamba, the killing of CanUra in the wrestling ground, the episode of uprooting of the Arjuna trees, which earned Krishna, the name of Damodara from Yasoda, the killing of Aristasura and Dhenukasura, stay at Braja, the killing of Putana, uprooting of the two Arjuna trees, creation of wolves, stay in Braja, killing of Vatsasura, subjugation of the serpent king Kaliya in the heart of the Yamuna, the uprooting of the lotus flowers and blue lotuses with Sambha from the Yamuna- hrada, the uplifting of Govardhana, for the protection of the cows, removal of the hunch of the dwarfgirl Kubja who grinded the sandal paste and other related episodes were sung by the apsaras, as they happened.

О king, the adorable Krishna, without birth, had also displayed his universal form and the way in which he did so turning himself in the form of a dwarf, the way in which the Saubha-virhana was churned, the way in which Balarama, covered the weapons, of plough, the way in which the demon Mura, was killed by Shri Krna, the way in which, during the marriage of Gandharvaraja the powerful rulers were yoked in the chariots, the way Arjuna was made victorious at the time of abduction of Subhadra, the way the heaps of gems were received from the defeated demons, were sent to Dvaraka in presence of Indra, all these as well as other ordinary episodes, which could delight the Yadavas, were sung by the charming apsaras. Those apsaras san^ all the songs relating to the episodes of Shri Krishna and Balarama, which indeed were surprising.

Thereafter having been overpowered with the drinking of beverage, the extremely glorious Balarama himself started singing clapping his hands in the company of Revati, in delight.

Madhusudana felt extremely delight finding Balarama and others singing.

Thereafter Shri Krishna too in the company of Satyabhama started singing in order to please Balarama.

Arjuna — the foremost of the humans on earth had also arrived there. Feeling blissful, Arjuna also started singing songs together with Subhadra.

О Naresvara, thereafter, the intelligent Gada, Sarana, Pradyumna, Samba, Satyaki, Bhanu — the son of Satyabhama, the beautiful Sudesna, both princes Nisatha and Ulmaka — the sons of Balarama, joined the feat of singing.

Besides the Akrura, Yadava commander Anedhrsti, Sanku, besides the other prominent people of the race of Bhima also started singing. О son of large hearted and glorious Narendra kumara, at that point of time, the ship kept on getting crowded with the arrival of more and more people and with that the influence of Shri Krishna also kept on enhancing.

Then the valorous princes started singing songs during night, as a result of which the entire world became blissful. The sufferings and the sins of all of them were subsides.

Thereafter, in order to please Shri Krishna the enemy of Kesi, Narada - the guest of the gods, arrived among the best of Yadavas, his locks of hair were spreading over his body.

О Prince, Narada - the eternal form, became the main conductor of the divine dance (and music). He with his imitable limbs, following the divine dance, reached the centre of the group of Yadava and started singing.

The intelligent sage was smiling by. looking at Satyabhama and Shri Krishna. Arjuna and Subhdra, Balarama and Revati.

Narada of joking nature, imitated the performance of some 6f the participants, the smiles of some of them, the sports of others and by other means made even the most serious and the peaceful people to laugh.

When someone spoke slowly with low voice, then the graciuos Narada, repeated those words in lion’s roar. Sometimes he laughed aloud, with utmost delight. He did all this for the delight of Shri Krishna.

О Prince, the damsels seated there, at the command of Shri Krishna, gave away to Narada, the best of prominent gems of the world, the beautiful costumes, best suiting the sage, in large quantity.

The queens who could well understands the indication of Shri Krishna, also offered to Narada, the garlands of divine flowers, strings of Parijata flowers, besides the flowers which blossomed in all the seasons.

At the end of the divine dance, the eternal lord Krishna, holding the hand of Narada, accompanied by Satyabhama, and Arjuna, jumped into the oceanic water.

Then the glorious and valorous Shri Krishna smilingly said to Satyaki, you divide yourselves into two parts and jump into the water with your wives.

All my sons and half of the people of the race of Yadus, should collect together and should be under the change of Balabhadra with Revati, while the other half of the people of Bhima’s race should be on my side. Thus both the groups should sport in the oceanic water.

Then Shri Krishna, getting completely reassured, commanded the ocean, who stood there, with folded hands, you make your water fragrant spotless and tasteful devoid of the aquatic animals.

Your seashore should appear like having been studded with the gems. It should be comfortable for the feet. All the pleasent things which could Ър suitable for the people should be presented to them. With my grace, you would know about the likes of all.

Though your water is not potable, still it would become potable to suit the likes of all. The fish in the ocean, should take to the form of lapiz lazuli, beads, gems and the gold.

The lotus of white and red colour would float over your surface and would be able to produce pleasing fragrance, loving touch and red juice. They will be served by the black wasps and would be pleasent to took at.

You arrange for the pitchers filled with several types of beverages on your surface. Besides them you also provide the gold vases for the purpose of drinking them.

О treasure of the water, you surely turn yourself in a way by which your cool water is filled with the fragrance of flowers. You should always remain careful for the same and make efforts that the yadavas have to face no adversity.

Thus speaking to the ocean, lord Krishna then started sporting with Arjuna. О Naresvara, then Satyabhama, who could well-understand the facial expression of Shri Krishna, drenched Narada splashing water over the sage.

Then Balarama, getting free from the effect of intoxication and with his pleasent body, held the hand of Revatl in his hand and singing to his liking jumped into the water of the ocean.

With the jumping of Balarama into the water, the sons of Shri Krishna and other chief personalities of the Bhima vamsa also jumped into the water. When they were so engaged in the water sport, their eyes were intoxicated with the effect of the beverages consumed by them.

The rest of the Yadavas, Nisatha, and Ulmuka, the sons of Balarama, while so sporting went close to Shri Krishna. They were clad in astonishing types of garments and were fully intoxicated. Their necks were decorated with the flowers of Parijata trees.

All of them possesed enormous prowess and were clad in the best of costumes. Their limbs had been plastured with the sandal paste and carried water vases in their hands and were singing divine songs.

Then at the command of Shri Krishna, the damsels of the earth started singing songs with the apsaras of the heaven, who liked the play of music. They started playing on the musical instruments like play girls.

The apsaras were always young, were devoted to love sports only and were well aware of the art of playing the instruments with the use of water of the Akasaganga. They played on the instruments of leather and sang the suitable songs also in delight.

The heavenly apsaras had the eyes resembling the lotus birds. Their heads were adorned with the lotus crowns, stealing the grace of the lotuses which blossom with the sun rays. The faces of all of them were pleasent like those of the gods.

О king, the faces of the hundreds of the damsels resembled the lunar disc, which decorated the ocean which looked graceful like the sky with hundered of moons studded therein.

О Naresvara, with the lightening like lustre of the damsels, the ocean in the form of clouds, appeared fascinating, as the clouds with the lightening appear in the sky.

Shri Krishna who was clad in the best of garments, stood with Narada and other people of his side, started splashing water over Balarama and his associates, while the people on the side of Balarama did so over the people of Shri Krishna.

At that point of time the wives of Shri Krishna and Balarama, having been filled with delight, and intoxicated with the music, songs and the beverages, carrying syringes of the colour water, drenchred with them, one another.

The Yadava of the Bhimavamsa, with their hearts filled with ego, lust and pride, with their eyes getting red, started splashing water over one another displaying their prowess before the damsels. They continued the water sport for long.

Then lord Visnu, the carrier of disc in his hand, observing their continuous involvement in the sports in water, stopped them all and listening to the sweet music of water musical instrument, he himself concluded the water sport with Narada — the great divine sage.

The Yadavas of Bhimavamsa who well understood the indications of Shri Krishna, filled with strong pride, the water sport. Thereafter their dear concubines started dancing, feeling assured.

At the conclusion of the dance, Shri Krishna, the wise one, discarded the water sport altogether. He came out of the water and gave the appropriate sandal paste to Narada and then he himself (applied it over his body).

Finding Shri Krishna coming otit of the water, the other Yadavas also stopped the water sport. Thereafter, the eternal valorous yadavas, purifying their bodies, went to the dining room with the command of Shri Krishna.

(In the dining hall), they took their seats, according to their age and relationship. Then the famous warriors, took food as per their liking and also consumed the beverages or juices.

The pulps of the ripe fruits, sour fruits, the roots filled with seeds of pomegranate which were extra sour and heated or the fruits, nutritious food, were served by the cooks to them.

The roots which were cooked over spears (or kababs), besides other roots and fruits, those which were cooked in ghee, besides other eatables, the stuff prepared with rock salt, or the licking articles like sauces, were served by the cooked to the Yadavas at the command of the chief cook.

As per the directions of the incharge of the kitchen, special types of fruits, known as mrga and their thick pulps, several types of items of food prepared with the sour mangoes, were also served to them.

The other cooks, cut the other vegetables into pieces which were fried in ghee, then mixing salt and chilly powder in them, were served to the people.

The valorous Yadavas enjoyed consuming the beverages with radish, pomegranate, citron, lemon, holybasil, asafoctida and special vegetable placed in vases with beautiful outlets.

The Yadavas also consumed the juices of katvahka, parvala, asafoctida, mixed with sour materials as well as salt and fried in oil besides bread fruits, intoxicating drinks- Mddhvika, Maireya, Surasava.

О Naresvara, the eatables of which colour like sugar candy, the fruits of red colour, mixed with several types of fragrant and saltish food items, besides juicy vegetables, the payasam cooked in the buffalo milk, powdered items and several types of sugar prepartions were eaten by them.

О king, the best of Uddhava and Bhoja warriors, who did not consume the food with intoxicating drinks, delightfully consumed several types of vegetables, pulses, beverages of milk and curd.

They drank vinegar made from rice in beautiful cups. They also consumed hot milk mixed with sugar in it and also ate several types of fruits.

Getting satisfied after taking food, the prominent warriors of Yadu race, accompanied a with their respctive wives, started singing pleasent songs. Their beloveds by their performance displayed the pleasent of the songs.

Thereafter lord Upendra — having been filled with delight, commanded to sing the Gandharvas song collectively.

At that point of time Narada got ready with his Veena, which could attract the mind with the six Ragas or tunes. Lord Krishna played on flute organised the hrllisaka dance (played by a large number of damsels at a time). Arjuna — the son of KuntI played on the cymbals and other musical instruments which were operated by the apsaras themselves, each one of whom was an expert in handling them. After the initical performance, Rambha, who was also well versed in acting, got up, (for her performance).

The limbs of her body were quite beautiful with her performance. Shri Krishna was extermely satisfied, with Balarama. Thereafter UrvasI — having the vast and pleasent eyes, besides Hema, MisrakesI, Tilottama Menaka, and several other apsaras in order to please Shri Krishna displayed other activity which appeased to the mind.

О Prince, Rambha and other apsaras, were mentally attracted towards Shri Krishna. All of them with their songs, dance and gentle performance, pleased everyone. О Naresvara, at that point of time, at the desire of Shri Krishna, all the apsaras who had arrived for water sports, received the betel leaves, which suited to their grace.

О lord of the people, at the command of Shri Krishna, in order to be king on the humans, Chhalikya, Gandharva had been brought on earth, besides the fragrant fruits, which were tastefully consumed by the Yadovas.

The pleasent Chhalikya Gandharva, because of the influence of Shri Krishna, established himself as Pradyumna and others on earth. The large hearted Pradyumna — the son of Rukmini, making use of the art of Gandharva, displayed it as well. It is he who made use of betel leaf.

The five warriors (Shri Krishna, Balarama, Pradyumna, Aniruddha and Sambha) had arranged for Chhalikya Gandharvas, which was always desired by the humans. It bestowed welfare, enhancement, praise, bestows grace, increases glory, auspicious, deeds grants support, as well as fame. It was immensely liked by the large hearted lord Narayana.

With the mere mention of it, one achieves victory as well as dharma. Bad dreams vanish besides the sin. Once upon a time, the king Revata had attentively listened to Chhalikya Gandharva, as a result of which the period of four thousand yogas, appeared to him like a day. From the same Chhalikya Gandharva, Kumaras and Gandharvas originated, exactly in the same way as one lamp in lighted with another lamp.

О Naresvara lord Krishna, together with the prominent Yadavas and Narada, are well aware of qualities of Chhalikya. The other people of the world knew it by name only. As the depth of the rivers can be known by the mountain or the ocean, similarly lord Krishna alone can understand the qualities of Chhalikya correctly. Without performing tapas no one can know about Chhalikya Gandharvas or relevant process in music. This is correct.

О king, this is the tune of six scales of music, which should be sung in an aggregate manner. The lesa part of Chhalikya known as Sukumara, when sung by a person in distress, relieves him of his safferings. (Then what to speak of the complete Chhalikya’s singing).

О lord of the people, the groups of gods, Maharsis and Gandharvas, can only display the proficency of Chhalikya Gandharvas in an excellent manner. You must well understand it by your wisdom. Thus realising lord Madhusudana, showering his grace on the universe, bestowed the knowledge of Chhalikya Gandharva to prominent Yadavas. The Chhalikya Gandharva which is meant for the gods, thus appeared on earth. The children, youths and old people of Yadu-varhsa organise festivities by Chhalikya Gandharva, during the birth ceremonies. Initially the children started gaining knowledge of the art with delight. Thereafter the old people also displayed their liking for the same. Thereafter all the people started praising the same at all the times at all the places.

The people well-versed in the ways of dharma and the valorous Yadavas, reminded of their ancient family traditions, respected the people on earth which goes on to testify that love is the thing of basic importance on earth and not the age.

Love is the base of friendship. Therefore the Yadavas of Dasarha, Vrsni and Andhaka races, treated their sons also as friends. After that festival, Shri Krishna, relieved all of them, who left the place.

Thereafter the apsaras as well, offering their salutations at the feet of Shri Krishna — the killer of Kamsa, returned to the heaven with a delightful heart. All the gods felt blissful at that time.

Here ends chapter — 89, of Visnu Parva of the Harivamsa Purana, a supplementary of the epic of Mahabharata, relating to the water sport of Shri Krishna and Balarama with song, dance and music. (Vrs. 1-88, P.T. = 8182)
