Gandharva marriage of Pradyumna and Prabhavati, besides other Yadava princes with other demon princesses

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, Pradyumna — the son of Shri Krishna, when well realised that Prabhavati, the daughter of asura had been completely filled with the desire for himself, then he spoke in delight to the female swan.

О beautiful bird, are you aware of the fact that I, taking myself to the form of a black wasp and concealing myself in the flower garland had arrived in the place of Prabhavati, hiding myself. (You better inform her about my arrival here.) I am obedient to Prabhavati. She can deal with me in any way she liked.

О king, thus speaking, the beautiful Pradyumna appeared before her in his beautiful form. By his so doing, the rear part of the palace was resplendent with the lustre of Pradyumna. With his resplendence, the shine of the moon was of no consequences.

At the sight of Pradyumna, there appeared a storm in the passions of Prabhavati, in the same way as the ocean- the lord of the rivers is flooded on the rise of the full moon.

At that point of time, the face of Prabhavati, was lowered in shyness. But she continued to look at her beloved with side glance. At that point of time Prabhavati stood there well composed.

Prabhavati was well adorned with the beautiful ornaments she had beautiful limbs. Pradyumna then raised the head of Prabhavati. by placing his hand below her chin. His entire body was filled with delight and he said to her.

“О damsel with charming face, I have been able to achieve today, this beautiful face after a long desire and which is resplendent like the full moon, why donot you speak out something lowering it? Donot be greedy of the lustre of your face. О fearful one, disown the fear and be graceful on this slave.

O fearful one, your shameful silence does not seem to be appropriate to the time. Disown the fear and for this I pray to you with folded hands. I am going to speak out to you, as to what should be done by you presently you listen to it.

There is no parallel on earth in so far as your beauty is concerned. You keeping in view the time and the place, marry me in Gandharva style, becoming graceful on me.

Thereafter, Pradyumna — the valorous Yadava, sipping the water, produced fire from the jasper gem, and reciting the mantras the offering of flowers was made to it.

Then he held the beautiful hand of Prabhavati in his own hand and went round the fire of the jasper gem.

At that point of time the fire god who is witness for all went in flames, respecting Pradyumna — the son of Acyuta.

Thereafter Pradyumna, resolved for giving daksina to the Brahmanas and said to the female bird, “You be on watch at the outer gate of the palace and you save us to escape from the sight of others.”

On hearing this the female swan left the palace offering her salutation to them. Then Pradyumna, held the right hand of Prabhavati and led her to a beautiful bed.

Sitting over it, he made Prabhavati to sit over his thigh in his lap and assured her variously. He issuing fragrance from his mouth, kissed her over her cheeks.

Thereafter, as the black wasp sucks the dust of the fully blossomed lotus flower, similarly he sucked the nectar of her lips. The Pradyumna-who was well-versed in the love sports fully embraced Prabhavati, who had the fully developed breasts.

Pradyumna, who was well-versed in amorous sport, started making love with her in seclusion. He did not incite her, nor did he enforce himself on her. He enjoyed her company for the whole night.

At dawn he returned to the same place where the acrobats were staying. Prabhavati did not want to separate herself from him, even for a moment, but she sent him off with great difficulty.

Pradyumna, on the other hand was always thinking of the his beautiful beloved in his mind. The Yadava prince of Bhlma’s race, waiting for the command of Devaraja Indra as well as his father Shri Krishna, stayed there in the form of an acrobat, for the establishment of the desired task.

The intelligent warrior, well concealed the real purpose, waited for the departure of Vajranabha on the world conquest.

O Naresvara, the time upto which the Yajna of the sage Kasyapa continued upto that time no conflict could take place between the intelligent gods and the asuras.

In this way the rainy season came to an end while the Yadava warriors kept on waiting, which is considered to be pleasent for all the living beings.

The goose, which moved with the speed of the mind, carried the messages of Shri Krishna as well as of Indra.

On each and every night, Pradyumna, well guarded by the goose, enjoyed the company of his wife Prabhavati.

О Naresvara, at the commnd of Indra, the entire city of Vajrapur was filled with the goose, but influenced with the time, the Danavas were completely unaware of the goose as well as about the acrobats.

О king, the son of Rukmini, well guarded by the goose, stealthily lived in the palace of Prabhavati.

Because of the illusion, his shadow only could be seen with the acrobats. He enjoyed the company of Prabhavati with half of his body.

All the acrobats were very much liked by the asuras, because of their humility, reverence, docile nature, performance, cleverness, simplicity, and wisdom.

The damsels of the asuras also desired the company of the women who had arrived with the Yadava princes, because of their beauty, performance, fragrance, sweet tongue, and excellent nature.

Vajranabha had a brother who was known by the name of Sunabha, who had two daughters, who were quite beautiful and full of virtues.

They were known by the name of Candravati and Gunvati. Both of them visited the palace of Prabhavati daily.

Both of them found that Prabhavati was engaged in love sport. The chaste Prabhavati had immense faith in her sisters.

Therefore, both of them once asked her, “O sister, with whom do you enjoy the love sport? ”

Prabhavati replied, “I have a Vidya by practicing which, a girl soon gets a suitable person for enjoying the love sport besides showering the fortune. Irrespective of the fact that the desired person is an asura or a human, the said vidya force him to meet me.

Therefore, I, making use of the said Vidya and have made a prince as my beloved and enjoy his company. Look here, with the application and influence of my Vidya Pradyumna has become my intimate beloved.”

Observing the beauty and the wealth of youthfulness possessed by him, both the sisters were extremely surprised. Then Prabhavati, possessing a sereme smile spoke words to her sisters, which suited the occasion.

“The gods always follow the dharma while the great asuras are always deceitful. The gods perform tapas, while the great asuras are attracted towards the worldly pleasures.

The gods are always truthful while the asuras indulge in falsehood. Wherever there is dharma, tapas and truth, that side is always victorious in the war.

Therefore both of you select competent grooms for yourself. I shall bestow the Vidya which makes one achieve a husband. Because of my influence, you will at once achieve your grooms.”

Both the sisters were then filled with delight and spoke to Prabhavati who always respected her husband, consulted Pradyumna on the subject.

Pradyumna at that point of time mentioned the names of Gada — his uncle and Sambha-his brother saying that both of them are beautiful humble and are well- versed in the war.

Prabhavati said - This vidya was given to me by Durvasa in earlier times getting pleased with the service, I rendered to the great sage. Besides he also bestowed to me the everlasting fortune and to maintain my virginity for ever.

He also told me that for whom soever out of gods, Danava or Yaksa would you think about he would be your husband. Because of his boon I preferred to have Pradyumna as my husband.

Therefore both of you also receive this Vidya from me, as a result of which you would surely meet with your beloved at once.” Both of them felt immensely delighted and received the vidya from the mouth of Prabhavati.

Then the virtuous girls making use of the vidya meditated for Goda and Samba. Thereafter both the prince entered the palace with Pradyumna.

О Naresvara, illusory Pradyumna, hid both Gada and Samba by his illusion and then presented them in the palace. Both the warriors who destroyed the demon army, married the girls, in Gandharva manner, reciting the mantras. Both of them were the favourite of the noble people. Candravatl who married to Gada and Gunavati was married to Samba — the son of Kesava.

In this way all the three of them, waiting for the command of Shri Krishna, stayed at Vajrapura, enjoying the company of the girls.

Here ends chapter — 94, of Visnu Paiva of the Harivamsa Purana a supplementary of the epic of Mahabharata relating to the Gandharava marriage of Pradyumna and Prabhavati, beside other yadava princes with other demon princes. (CVrs. 1-51, P.T. = 8490)
