Performance of acrobats in Vajrapur and Pradyumna’s entry into the palace of Prabhavati

Vaishampayana said — О Naresvara, thereafter Vajranabha commanded the asuras dwelling Supur to provide the best of accommodation for the acrobats.

They should be treated as honoured guests and should be given enormous pieces of beautiful costumes. In order to make them comfortable, they should be presented with such articles, which could delight the minds of the humans.

At the command of the master, the asuras acted accordingly. The idea that the acrobat about whom they had already heard, had arrived there, made the people quite curious and anxious.

The Daityas, welcomed the acrobat named Bhadra, gracefully. They presented him with excellent germs for his use.

Thereafter, the acrobat who had already received the boon, performed his dance in the town of Supur and fully delighted the minds of the people there.

He basing his performance on the epic of Ramayana enacted a play there in which it is revealed that lord Visnu incarnated on earth for the killing of Ravana.

О sinless one, the king comapada, invited Rsyasrnga — the great sage, together with the female dancers. Thereafter the king Dasaratha also invited Rsasrnga with his wife Santa to Ayodhaya.

О son of Bharata’s race, in the guise of Rama, Laksmana, Bharata and satrughana, was taken by the acrobats of similar appearances.

Such of the Danavas who had been alive during the time of Rama were also surprised by looking as the actors who were quite similar with the real ones. They said, “They are all similar exactly to the original ones.”

The costumes, performance, activities and introduction of the actors, surprised all the Danavas.

Getting absorbed in the play, the asuras, got up again and again, during their performance and shouting with loud voice in appreciation and getting delighted they offered them the costumes, necklaces, armlets and garlands of gems and lapiz lazuli.

With the individual presenting of the articles by the asuras, the acrobats were immensely pleased. Mentioning their ancestors as well as their gotras, they praised the asuras as well as the Rishis.

О Narendra, at that point of time, asuras the dwellers of Sakha city communicated the news of the arrival of the divine acrobats.

О Bharata, the Daitya king had already received the relevant news. Therefore, he, getting immensely pleased, sent a message, for bringing the acrobats to vajrapur.

Listening to the command of the Danava king, the asuras of Sakha city too liked the Yadavas disguised as acrobats to Vajrapur.

The Daityaraja, provided a palace built by Visvakarma for their stay and whatever articles were needed by them, they were supplied hundred times more than their actual requirement.

Thereafter Vajranabha — the great asura started festivities for Mahakala Rudra. He delightfully got a sports chamber made there for the delight of the soldiers.

When the acrobats had taken complete rest, then the valorous Vajranabha, offering enormous gems to them, commanded them to display their art.

The ladies of the heram, were seated behind a curtain, from where they could see everything in the sporting chamber. Thereafter he himself took his seat with his relatives to watch their performance.

The Yadava princes, who could perform astonishing deeds, with their make up as the acrobats, got themselves prepared for dancing.

Then the acrobats started playing on small cymbals, flute, veena and other musical instruments.

Then the dancing girls who had accompanied the Yadavas started Deva- gahdhara type of chhalikya — gandharvas song, which was like nectar for the ears. It provided comfort to mind and ears of the listeners.

The Gandhara like Severn tunes, besides the Vasanta-raga and the Gangavtarana are of special type, which the dancing girls sange mixing them up with other tunes displaying their sweet wealth of voice.

О Bharata, by singing the descent of the Ganga based on rhythem and melody (Pradyumna Gada and Sambha,) provided satisfaction to the asuras.

Then Pradyumna, who had been made to perform as an acrobat (for the purpose of the gods), together with Gada and Samba, started playing on Nandi — a musical instrument.

At that point of time, at the conclusion of Nandi, Pradyumna — the son of Rukmini, recited the verses relating to the descent of the Ganga in a beautiful manner.

Thereafter, he started enacting the episode of Rambha-bhusara play. The demon named Sura guised as a Ravana. The concubine Manovati, acted as Rambha.

Pradyumna acted as Nalakubara. Samba became the jester and acted accordingly with the use of illusion, the Yadava princes produced the mountain Kailasa there.

Nalakubara, having been filled with anger, displayed the scene in which Nalakubara had pronounced a curse on Ravana and had assured Rambha at the same time. The Yadava princes enacted the aforesaid scene, which adds to the glory of Narada.

The illusions princes of Bhima’s race, pleased all the Danavas with their dance and performance, who praised them all.

All of them offered the Yadavas (as acrobats), costumes., gem-studded ornamens, and beautiful ganlands of gems and the lapiz lazuli.

The demons also gave them the unique types of planes, the aerial chariots, and the divine elephants who were born in the divine race of the Nagas, which could move in the sky.

О son of Bharata’s race, the demons also gave to the Yadavas, the divine and cool sandal paste, again and other fragrant material besides a cintamani gem which fulfilled all the desires.

О best of the humans, the Yadavas performed several plays there and on all such occasions, the Danavas as well as the wives of the chief Danavas, offered so much prizes of gems to the Yadavas, that they themselves were deprived of the gems.

Then the female goose — the friend of Prabhavati said to her, “O blissful one, I had visited the city of Dvaraka belonging to the Yadavas.”

Then the female goose, which flew in the sky, said to the lotus eyed Prabhavati, ‘Very well”. I shall sleep here today.” Then she climbed over the terrace of Prabhavati palace.

O damsel with beautiful eyes, I met Pradyumna in seclusion. О Suclmati, the devotion of Pradyumna preserved in your mind, was revealed by me to him.

О lotus eyed one, he was immensely delighted at my words. He has decided to meet you at sunset today itself.

Therefore, О damsel with broad buttocks, you are going to meet your beloved today itself, because the people born in the race of Yadu donot send false messages to their beloveds.”

Hearing this Prabhavati was immensely delighted. Then she spoke to the female goose, “You have lived in my house earlier as well. Similarly you stay in my palace today as well.

I shall, staying in this palace, with you, be able to meet Pradyumna — the son of Kesava. I shall be fearless in your company.”

The rear of the palace, built by Visvakarma, was decorated by Prabhavati, to welcome Pradyumna.

After the decoration was over the female goose, who could fly with the speed of the wind, with the permission of Prabhavati, flew to get Pradyumna there.

The female goose with auspicious smile, went to Pradyumna — disguised as an acrobat and said, “O lord, the time which you had fixed already is arriving today itself.”

Pradyumna replied, “very well”. Listening to his answer, the female goose returned and reaching in the palace, she said to the Prabhavati, “O damsel with vast eyes, the son of Rukmini is arriving here to meet you. Be patient.”

On the other hand Pradyumna — the destroyer of the enemies, observed that the fragrant flower garlands were being carried to the place of Prabhavati over which a large number of black wasps were hovering.

Then the omnisceint and glorious Pradyumna, concealed himself in the flower garlands, which were being carried to the place of Prabhavati.

The ladies carried the flower garlands over which the black wasps were hovering, in the palace of Prabhavati. Then the other servants handed over the garlands over which the black wasps were hovering in the hands of Prabhavati.

О Naresvara, Prabhavati kept the garlands besides her in the evening time the black wasps left the flowers.

Having been separated from his companions, Pradyumna hid himself in the lotus worn in the ear of Prabhavati.

Then, Prabhavati, the best of the orators, finding the rising of the moon, said to the female goose.

“O hand maid, all my limbs are burning. The mouth is getting dry. My heart is getting anxious. What is the ailment, which has been attracted by me, for which there is no medicine?

The just moon, is increasing my anxiety, doubly. It looks pleasent but is usurping the friendship. He is behaving in an evil manner.

It is strange, the one who has not been seen by me earlier and I have been desirous of him, only with the hearing of his name, still he is igniting fire in all my limbs. Disgrace to the nature of the women.

As is being thought by me with my wisdom, in case my beloved does not reach here, then I shall follow the path over which Kumudvatl has travelled or in other words I shall have to end my life for the sake of my beloved in youthful age. This is quite a painful situation.

Alas! a wise damsel like me has been bitten by the serpent of lust, otherwise, the moon eyes, which have the strength of calmness, which by nature provide comfort and delight to the world, why are they burning my limbs.

The air, which is cool by nature and carrries the fragrant dust of many flowers, why has the same air, become like the forest fire for me and burning my body.

I am resolving again and again that I should stabilise my mind, but my mind has been churned by desire and has become weak. Therefore I am unable to stabilise my mind.

I have become vexed and agitated. I am getting confused, my heart is shaking and rhy eyes are rolling repeatedly. Alas! surely, I am going to be destroyed.

Here ends chapter — 93, of Visnu Parva of the Harivarhsa Purana, a supplement of the epic of Mahabharata relating to the performing of acrobats in Vajrapur and Pradyumna into the place of Prabhavati. (Vrs. 1-62, P.T. = 8439)
