Encounter between Shri Krishna and Ghantakarna

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, then Shri Krishna looked at both the Pisacas, who were quite terrific and flesh eaters, who carried torches in their hands.

Both the Pisacas looked at Shri Krishna, son of Devaki who was seated with comfort over an asana. Finding him there, both the Pisacas went to him and they surrounding him said.

О honourable one, who are you? who is your father? where from have you arrived here? What for have you arrived in the forest infested with the wild animals?

This forest is devoid of humous, is infested with panthers, is served by the Pisacas, is abode of the wild animals and is full of tigers, (what for have you arrived here)?

You have a tender body. Each one of your limbs is extremely beautiful. You appear like another Visnu your eyes resemble the blossomed lotus flowers. You are of dark complexion. You shine like the lotus flowers and appear like the lord of Laksmi.

It appears as if you have arrived in another form of Visnu to please us. Are you, a god, a Yaksa, a Gandharva or a Kinnara? Are you Indra or Kubera? or are you yama or Varuna? You are seated here alone in meditation.

О Human, bestowing grace to others, you tell me truthfully, I would like to know the truth about you". When so asked by both the Pisacas, lord Visnu who had long steps, said, "I am a Ksatriya. The humans of the world know me like this. I am born in the race of Yadus. Therefore I am performing as task suitable for a Ksatriya.

I am the preserver of the three worlds, and always exercise my control over the wicked people. Presently I intend to visit the mountain Kailasa — the abode of lord Siva the spouse of Uma.

This is my story. Now you let me know about yourself, who are you both? This is the asrama of a Brahmana. What for have you reached here?

This is an immensely sacred place, known as Badarl. Many Brahmanas live here. The degrade people have never found a place here. The Siddhas have always dwelt here. The ascetics engaged in tapas are found here everywhere. The flocks of the dogs as are found today, were never seen here earlier, nor could flesh eater Pisacas were ever found here.

The deer should not be killed here, because hunting is not allowed here. The people who are of degraded minds, the ungratefuls and others should not enter this sacred place.

I am the protector of this place. There is no doubt about it. In case anyone delibrately disobeys my command, then I shall firmly rule this place.

Who are you both? where do you live? To whom does this vast army belong? No one should go beyond this point in this forest, which is dwelt by the Rishis and their tapas could be disturbed.

All of you should stop here and should talk comfortably. Otherwise I can stop you by my words as well as actions.

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, when so asked by Shri Krishna, the Pisacas started giving the reply. One of the two Pisacas was quite horrible having long arms. Then he started speaking the feelings of his heart.

The Pisacas said — Very well, I shall speak out. You kindly listen and better concentrate your mind. First of all, I offering my salutation to lord Visnu, who is the eternal god, besides being unborn, the best, sinless, auspicious, remover of sins, Lord of the universe, blissful, and then shall speak out my story truthfully. In case you so desire, you please listen.

I am a Pisaca known by the name of Ghantakarna. My sight is quite terrific. I eat flesh, have a deformed body, I am horrible and am destroyer like Yama of the other animals.

I am the servent of Kubera — the friend of Lord Siva, this is my real younger brother, who is the death for the god of death.

The gigantic hunting which is being resorted to is meant for the worship of lord Visnu. This is my army, and the flock of dog also belongs to me.

I have arrived here from the mount Kailasa, which is served by the goblins. I am quite strong but have been bestowed with the body of sinful Pisacas.

Earlier I used to denounce lord Visnu very much, and wandered binding a bell around my earlier order to prevent listening to the name of lord Visnu. I was always worried about it.

Once, I reaching before lord Siva, the dweller of Kailasa, I adored Mahadeva and since then, I am adoring him.

Getting pleased with my devotion, lord Siva, said to me. You ask for a boon." I prayed to lord Siva for my salvation.

At my request for salvation, the three eyed Siva said, "It is lord Visnu who bestows salvation on all. There is no doubt about it.

Now you go to Badarikasrama and adoring Visnu in the form of Nara- Narayana you get moksa from lord Janardana".

At these words of the trident bearer lord Siva, I could realise the importance Govinda having the banner of Garuda. Now taking him to the supreme lord, I have arrived to beg for salvation in this country.

In case you are anxious, then you lesten to my other performance as well. Over the shore of the western ocean, there is a city named Dvaravati, which is inhabited by the people of the race of Vrsni. The city is surrounded with the sea waves. Lord Hari the best of all the humans lives there.

О human, I have started presently to have an audience with the lord of Dvaraka puri, with my attendants. We have to meet lord Visnu today in any case.

Lord Had is the cause of the creation of all the lokas, besides being their preserver, destroyer, Jagadisvara besides being the eternal Purusa, source of origin as well as the seed.

Shri Hari is the creator of the entire universe, Purana Purusa, lord of all the gods, besides being the form of truth. He is Adideva, bestower of the boons. All of us are ready to have an audience with him at the present moment.

By the grace of whom, the universe in this form emerged with Gandharvas, humans, huge serpents. Janardana happens to be the cause of the origin of the universe. All of us are anxious to have an audience with the lord.

The lord from whose belly the universe appears at the start of a kalpa, and again gets absorbed in the same at the end of the kalpa. During the period of the establishment of the kalpa, the entire universe is at the command of lord Hari, we shall have an audience with the same lord Hari.

Lord Visnu, who is the creator of the entire universe, Shri Hari alone maintains it, besides being its destroyer, we shall meet with the Adi-Purusa, eternal god, who is powerful, indestructible, eternal form, lord of the universe, known as Shri Hari, shall be seen by us today.

Hari alone, without birth, even the creator of Brahma, protector of the world, and is the maker of the earth. His wisdom has be purified with the yogic practices, shall be adored by us carefully and then achieve him. Our mind is completely devoted to him.

He who is the preserver of universe, is the abode of the three worlds, the same Shri Hari, absorbs, the entire universe in his belly, and taking to the form of an infant, throwing both his feet over the banyan leaf and moving his hands sleeps over the tree leaf.

The sage Markandeya, entering his belly, witnessed all the worlds therein. At that point of time the entire world was established in his belly in the same way, as it was outside the belly and was experienced by him.

Absorbing the whole world in his body, in earlier times, lord Purusottama slept in the oceanic waters. While the goddess Laksmi, moved the fly whisk over him, serving him at the same time.

At the time of the start of the creation, a golden lotus appeared from the navel of the lord, which appeared charming with its petals. The same vast lotus was the birth place of lord Brahma.

Lord Visnu — master of the bhutas, at the start of the universe, taking to the form of Varaha, praised by the Rishis, thundering like the huge cloud, carrying the globe over the tip of his tusk, had lifted it up from the water, the same lord Hari, the Purana Purusa as well as Purusottama, and the creator of the universe, a witness, the form of yajna, the lord of yajna and is also the preserver of the universe. We are getting ready to have an audience with the same lord.

Some of his devotees mention Visnu in relation to Indra and other gods, while some of his devotees adore him in one and the same form. We people have arrived to have an audience with the lord well-versed with the spotless form of a great soul.

A class of the learned people devoting their minds in Srutis, Smrtis and logic, and describe the lord in various ways in a number of forms, the people well-versed in the Puranas discribe him as the soul of all besides being free from births, we are getting ready to meet the same Sarvesvara.

The one whom the ancient Rishis think to be adorable, bestower of boons, desirable, also conceive him to be all pervading and devoid of birth, we are aspirisng to have an audience with the same Janardana.

At the start of the universe, had knitted the minds of the people, like the garland of beads, the form of supreme tattva. At the same time he is also believed to be all pervading and devoid of birth. We have got ready to have a look at the same Shri Hari. What shall we speak at the moment?

О human, we shall now go elsewhere. You can also move at your own sweet will. The time for my daily performance has also arrived at the dead of night. Therefore you can move about as you like. There is no need to think otherwise.

Thus speaking, the Pisaca with horrible and awful face, drank a lot of blood over that plain ground, and consumed the flesh to his liking. Thereafter, rincing his mouth with water, he placed the material for worship at his back. He also placed the huge noose of net of entcails, aside. Then he spreading the asana of kusa- grass, sprinkled water over it for its purification. He also drove out the dogs making much efforts. Then sitting there with comfort, the Pisaca, who maintained the dogs, started meditating seated in a smadhi.

The terrible Pisaca at that point of time, concentrating his mind, offered his salutation to lord Kesava, who is benevolent to his devotees started enlogising him reciting the stotra.

He said, salutation to the lord, who is carrier of cakra. Salutation to lord Gadadhara, who lives in the hearts of all.

He is powerful, all pervailing, blissful, known as Narayana-Deva. Salutation to him. О Kesava, let my mind be purified by adoring you.

О Narayana, you exercise your control over the sense organs, let me not get again get this type horrible body in future. With your devotion, let me become the messanger of the gods.

O lord, let my body be destroyed with the strike of your cakra, after which I should no more be enslaved in the worldly bondage. This is my request to you.

You serve as a kalpa-vrksa (the wish fulfilling tree) for the beggers. You are the benefector of all. О Devesvara, wherever, I be born in future, you should always remain in my heart. This is my second prayer.

О Deva, salutation to you. О Deva, salutation to you. Let my prayer like this continue without any obstruction. My salutation to you always.

At the time of my death, my memory should not get confused. (I should continue to devote my mind accordingly. О Deva, my mind should every moment and every day remain devoted to you. You will kindly extend such inspiration to me. You should never feel about me to be a cruel Pisaca who is not worthy of compassion.

О lord, О Deva, you should think that the poor fellow is my slave. О lord, О master, salutation to you. You kindly be so graceful to me, that I am unable to cause pain to others. Now my sense organs should not be caught in lustful activities.

О Kesava, at the time of my death, by your grace, I should face such a situation that the earth should absorbs my fragrance, the water should absorb the organs of taste, the sun should absoib my eyes and the wind should absorb my skin. Similarly the sky should absorb the power of my hearing and the Prana be absorbed by the moon.

О Hari, let the water, always protect me, with the earth. Let the sun also protect me. You are resplendent like the sun, salutation to you.

О Janardana, let the wind and the sky save me from the miseries. Let my mind remain devoted to the supreme soul, who is form of universe. Let it be protected from the evil ways or discrimination.

In the contrary, in case, the mind is entangled in the horrible evil, it destroys the people. (In such a situation a person is caught) in painful sins.

О Deva, О Janardana, you always kindly protect my mind. The blemish should not enter my mind. Let my mind always remain neat and clean.

Because the blemished mind drives one towards the hell. In case the mind is clean the outer sense organs, also become spotless. In case the mind is blemished, the other organs also got blemished and a person is unable to perform any noble deed in the world.

О Kesava, such of the persons, who, without exercising control over the inauspicious mind, wash the limbs outwardly, it is of no use. The outward cleaning of the limbs is of no consequence.

Therefore, О Janardana, making all the efforts, you kindly protect my mind. О Deva, you fulfil the desires of all the people, the sense organs are very strong therefore, you better protect them. Exercise your control over them.

O lord of the universe, you kindly prevent my tongue from speaking ill of others. О Janardana, you keep my mind away from the riches and wives of others. 0 Kesava, by your grace, let my mind be filled with compassion for all.

O Lord, let me always remain devoted to you. I shall feel compassionate towards all. Then what is the use of talking much in this connection? You kindly listen to a single talk of mine.

О Devesvara, Janardana, my mind should always remain devoted to you in pleasure or in pain, in melody, while taking food, while walking, while awaking or in sleep, in all the situations. My mind should always remain devoted to you. Salutation to you.

Thus speaking the extremely horrible Pisaca, who was degraded because of his, caste, and not by the heart, started his meditation. He was a great devotee of the lord. (82-83)

The Pisaca, who ate flesh, binding his belly tightly with entrails, with a firm mind, was seated comfortably, controlling his mind. He then concentrated his mind towards the cause of the origin of the universe, the wearer of pitambara (yellow lower garment), bestower of welfare on all the all pervading, Shri Hari.

The one who is eternal, auspicious, knowledgeable, the cause of all the living beings, free from ailments and grief, the unique one, besides being Adi-Purusa, and also known as Mukundadeva, was meditated upon by him.

Fixing his sight over the tip of his nose, reciting the name of eternal form of Brahman, also known as Pranava, like the lamp burning in the area without the wind, got himself established in unshakable condition, he kept on offering salutation reciting the mantras.

Taking Pranava as the narrator, and conceiving supreme Brahman to be the clear meaning expressed in words, he concentrated his mind, he presented the same to lord Visnu. The mind which was without a substitute, he firmly established in his heart.

Establishing lord Hari over his lotus like heart, the great yogi, but a great consumer of flesh, the Pisaca seated himself there with comfort. Then he maditated upon Brahma, Visnu and Siva, all in one form of Visnu.

Here ends chapter — 80, of Bhavisya Parva of the Harivamsa Parana — a supplement of the epic of Mahabharata, relating to the encounter between Sn Krishna and Ganta Kama. (Vrs. 1-89, P.T. = 13^303)
