All these Gandharvas started dancing near Kesava. Similarly the virtuous apsaras who were delightful, adorned with all the ornaments, started dancing and singing. They had beautiful bodies. Their hips were quite charming. The limbs of all of them were quite beautiful and had vast eyes. Their waists were quite attractive and beautiful. The faces of all the apsaras, were loveable for all.

They were known by the names of Anuka, Jaml, Misrakesi, Alambusa, Marici, Sucika, Vidyut PUrna, Tilottama, Adrika, Laksna, Rambha, Manorama, Asita Subahu, Supriya, Subhaga, Urvasi, Citralekha, Sugriva, Sulocana, Pundarika, Sugandha, Pramathani, Nanda, SaradavatiMenaka, Sahajanyd, Parnika, and Punjikesthala. The groups of Kasyapa's sons known by the names of Dhata, Aryama, Mitra, Vanina, Arhsa, Bhaga, Indra, Vivasvan, Pusa, Tvasta, savita and Visnu, also arrived there. The twelve Adityas who were comparable with the sun in lustre, and were respledent like the fire. (They also arrived there.) All of them offered their salutation after arriving there to lord Vamana.

О lord of the people, Mrgavyadha, the serpents, the powerful Nirriti, Kapali, and lord Sthanu or Bharga — the eleven Rudras also were present there.

Both the Asvani kumaras, eight vasus, the valorous Marudganas, Visvedevas, Sadhyadeva, stood before the lord with folded hands.

The younger brothers of the serpent Sesa known by the names of Vasuki, and others, Tortoise, Apaharta and Mahabali Taksaka, were the serpents who could not be defeated by anyone. They were illustrious, wrathful, besides being all powerful. All of them stood before the lord, with folded hands.

Taraksya, Aristariemi, valorous Garuda, Aruna, and Aruni the sons of Vinata were present there.

Together with all the great souls, Brahma the creator of the world, the preceptor of the universe himself arrived there and he spoke.

Brahma said — The entire universe is born of him. Therefore the powerful eternal Purusa happens to be the lord of the universe (or he should be established over the seat of lokesvara).

Thus speaking, Brahma with all the Rishis offering their salutation to Devesvara, retired to their resplective places.

The lord Visnu, who incarnated as the son of Kasyapa had a dwarfish form. He had the dark complexion of the cloud of the time of the rainy season. His eyes were somewhat red.

Shrivatsa mark adorned his chest, which made the lord look quite beautiful. At that point of time, all the apsaras were gazing at the facial beauty of the lord, with their blossoming eyes.

In case a thousand suns issued lustre from the sky at a time, it could be compared with the lusrtre of the body of the lord.

He was illustrious like the divine Rishis. Lord Vamana was the rescuer and protector of all the living beings of the world. The hair on his body was quite auspicious. The shoulders were large. He looked like the bull of resplendence.

The one who is the goal of the auspicious people, to whom the sinful people have no access, the noble people well versed in the yoga, conceive him as an excellent form of yoga. In whom the eight gunas (virtues) like Anima are lodged, who is conceived as the foremost of the gods, Achieving the eternal Deva, the disciplined Brahmanas, desirous of moksa (salvation) and are frightened from the bondages of the world, are freed from the cycle of birth and death, for whom the dwellers of all the asramas perform tapas. The Sadhakas, controlling their diet, adopting the difficult vrata, adore him. Sesa and other Nagas known as Ananta and others adore him. The Nagas having thousands of hoods and red eyes, the Brahmanas desirous of achieving the heaven adore him, the one who possesses fortunes is unique, and excellent men of learnings, who pervades in all the places alone, to whom the learned people, couceive as the bestower of the share of yajna, possessing the auspicious lustre, having the sun and the moon as eyes, having the body of sky, in whom the gods take refuge, the same all pervading supreme soul, addressed the gods in his excellent speech.

Lord Shri Hari, who appeared as an infant, with his yogic powers, asked the gods, thought he was well aware of everything, "0 best of the gods, you tell me which one of your task should be established by me? What type of boon should be bestowed by me on you. You should speak out with delight, what ever is desired by you.

Listening to the words of lord Vamana Indra and all other gods, delightfully spoke to lord Visnu — the son of Kasyapa with their hands folded.

О excellent lord, О omniscient one, Mahatma Bali, the lord of the Daityas, performing great tapas having astonishing prowess, control of sense organs, as well because of the effect of the boons he got from Brahma, he has usurped the kingdom from us, of the three worlds. It is said that he (Bali) is invincible for us. О lord, performer of the excellent vrata, only you are in a position to overpower him and no one else can do so. Therefore, all of us becoming destitutes, have come to take refuge with you. You protect those who take refuge with you and you are remover of the danger of all and are the bestower of the boons.

О long armed one, best of the gods, you for the benefit of the Rishis and the lokas and to do good to your father Kasyapa and the mother Aditi, (think of ways and means) by which the kavya is restored to the manes and havya to the gods, as before. For the benefit of these as well as your elder brother Indra, and to be free from his debt, you snatch away the kingdom of the three worlds and restore it to Indra.

Presently Daityaraja Bali is performing the Asvamedha sacrifice, you think of the means to get back the kingdom of the three worlds from him."

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, at these words of the gods, Lord Visnu in the form of Vamana, increasing the delight of all the gods, spoke thus.

Lord Visnu said — О gods, let the illustrious sage Brhaspati, the son of Angira, lead me to the place of yajna of Bali.

О best of the gods, reaching the place of his yajna, I, in order to usurp the kingdom of the three worlds shall act appropriately.

Vaishampayana said — О king, then the learned and illustrious Brhaspati took lord Vamana to the place of yajna of the king Bali.

The lord taking to the form of a boy, was wearing the waist bend of munja (reeds), yajnopavita, and carried an umbrella, a danda, and a flag in his hands. His eyes were of the colour of smoke as well as red.

The yajnamandapa was crowded with Brahmarsis. Reaching there, the lord himself described the yajna.

Lord Vamana, who was the lord of lokesvara, though possessing the body of a boy, still all the gods including Brahma, stood in attention before him, like an old person.

The one whose form is beyond comprehension, the same lord Vamana, the foremost of the gods, reached the yajnamandapa of Bali — the son of Virocana.

Though Daityaraja Bali was guarded by armed warriors with military uniforms, (and was inaccessible) still, in the mandapa crowded with Danavas, he entered from the main gate of the mandapa.

Vamana was surrounded by the Rishis from all the sides, still the valorous Vamana reached before Bali - the lord of Daityas and Danavas.

О best of humans, then the eternal yajnapurusa, described the perforiming or the yajna variously, in detail mod all the yajha priests including Sukracarya — the cheif priest of the Daityas speechless.

О Bharata, then the all pervading lord described the exact form of the performing of yajna in presence of all the Rishis, highlighting even the unknown methods of the performing of the yajna.

The immensely illustrious boy, known as Vamana, made all the great Maharsis as well as the senior Upadhyayas, speechless observing this Bali, the son of Virocana, considered him to be an astonishing miracle. Then he with his hands folded, lowered his head before him and said.

"O Brahmana, where from have you arrived? who are you? Who is your father? What for have you arrived here? I have never come across a Brahmana like you nor have I known you earlier.

Inspite of your being a boy you are the best among the learned people. You are excellent in learnings and knowledge your speech is matured. Your shape is beautiful and you are loving to look at.

Even the sons of gods and the Rishis cannot be compared with you. The sons of Nagas, Yaksas, asuras, Raksasas, the manes, the siddhas and the Gandharvas are also never like you. Whatever you might be, I offer my salutation to you. You tell me what can I do for you?

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, at the words so spoken by Bali, lord Vamana, who was well aware of the auspicious means for the establishment of the task, smilingly said.

Here ends chapter — 70, of Bhavisya Parva of the Hanvariisa Purana, a supplement of the epic of Mahabharata, relating to the birth of Vamana and his visit to the yajna of Bali. (Vrs. 1-73, P.T. = 12,842)
