Meeting of Durvasa with Shri Krishna, Sudharma Sabha

Vaishampayana said — О Naresvara, the one who is the Isvara of all besides being all pervading, having the eyes resembling the lotus petel, who is beautiful and dark complexioned, wears the yellow lower garment, possesses Laksmi, has the long and hanging costumes and ornaments on his body, adorned with crown over his head, is the lord of Laksmi, who has the curly black hair over his head, is invisible, the eternal Deva, possessing all the kalas, and is the bestower of welfare, the same lord Krishna, was once engaged in sports with the princes like Satyaki and others.

Having been seated in the centre of the Sudharma-Sabha, Kesava, the foremost of the Yadavas, who acted in a way which pleased all, was engaged in circular sport with Satyaki.

The lotus eyed Shri Krishna was thus speaking to Satyaki, "This is my first game, you will have it later".

О king at his back, Vasudeva, Uddhava and other prominent Yadavas were seated at the appropriate seats.

As Rama engaged himself in sports with his friend Sugrlva, similarly, when they were free from other engagements, then Shri Krishna — the soul of all the bhutas enjoyed the recreation.

On that particular day. Shri Krishna engaged himself in the circular sport, for long and then he felt detached from the same.

О king, the sage, who had been made to wait by the gate keepers, making them to wait with respect at the gate, the same sage, realising that "it was the best time to enter the assembly", he entered the assembly.

The yatis, who had purified their hearts with the performing of the tapas for long, placing Durvasa as their leader had an audience with Shri Krishna, who was earlier engaged in circular sport, and was carrying the bell in his hand. Lord Hari having the eyes like the blossoming lotus flower, delighted Satyaki with an eye and with the other one he looked at Satyaki. At that very moment the yatis appeared before him.

The lotus eyed Shri Krishna, the lord of the race of Vrsni, Balabhadra, Vasudeva, Akrura, Ugrasena, and the other Yadavas, were upset looking at the yatis as well as Durvasa, and getting doubtful, enquired of one another, "What is all this? What is the matter?

All the Yadavas, then while seated looked at the sage Durvasa, who appeared to be ready to reduce all the three worlds to ashes. Only half of his kaupin could be visible. He recalled some one again and again. He felt painful at heart. He held a broken danda. The king Hamsa had troubled him the most therefore he was internally burning, with anger. The terrific fire appeared from his eyes. He was looking at Krishna — the lord of Yadavas. The panic striken prominent Yadavas, glanced at such a (terrific looking) Durvasa — the ascetic.

They thought mentally, "we know not what shall he do in anger"? Thus thinking, all the Yadavas and people of Vrsni race, slowly spoke to Durvasa, "O lord, here is the seat for you".

At the same time, Shri Krishna, the controller of all the sense organs, took a jump and appeared before the sage Durvasa and said, "0 excellent Brahmana, here is the seat, you be seated over it with comfort. I am standing in your attendence today, being your slave".

Then Durvasa in the form of an ascetic, somehow got himself seated over the seat. After Durvasa's taking seat, all other ascetics, were also seated over the appropriate seats.

Then Shri Krishna, adorned with Kirita crown, welcomed the sage excellently, offering him arghya etc. Thereafter lord Hrsikesa spoke to the powerful Durvasa.

"О excellent Brahmana, what for have all of you arrived here? There could be some major cause for your arrival here.

You are the sinless ascetics and foremost of the Brahmanas, О excellent Brahmanas, you always remain detached from the householders like us.

There is nothing for you to be demanded from us. Because, your minds have no desire for anything. Such of the people who perform deeds with a desire in their minds, such of the Brahmanas, who perform the excellent vrata, go to Ksatriyas to seek for their desired things.

But, О excellent Brahmana, inspite of our deep thinking, nothing is visible, which might have made your arrival here necessary. Therefore what is the cause of your arrival here? I fail to understand.

Your arrival here makes us believe, that there must be some reason for your arrival here and in case it is so, we shall know about it from you.

At these words of Devesvara — Cakrapani, Janardana, the anger of the Brahmana was further increased.

Much more anger appeared on the face of Durvasa, as compared to the earlier one, as if he was about to reduce to ashes, the three worlds and intended to devour all those who were looking at him.

Then the sage Durvasa, whose eyes had become red in anger, smilingly, as if teasing, spoke to Shri Krishna at that point of time.

"О lord of Yadavas, why do you speak to me like this you fail to understand the cause of my arrival here? I know you fully well you happen to be the great lord Visnu but still you talk as if cheating us.

О Visnu, we are pretty old people and are aware of the earlier happenings, on the basis of which I say, that you are the god of gods. You are appearing in human form because of your maya. О Jagadisvara, therefore, you being our master, why do you intend to conceal yourself from us.

You are the soul of those who are well versed in Brahman. The beautitude is your form. You happen to be the same, by adoring whom, Brahma attained the divine knowledge, and by adoring whom, even we have attained knowledge.

The one from whom, the entire universe has appeared, the same paramapada belongs to you. О Visvesvara, the one who was known as the universal form in earlier times, the same, happens to be your excellent and the best form.

The reward which can be achieved with adoration of the lord and by remembring whom, we the ascetics, get free from pleasure and pain, feel blissful, and with whom the devoted devotees have an audience in person, your same blissful form is unknown to the foolish people. О Deva, О Hari, we are not foolish like them, and know you well. Therefore your words, that "You are not aware of the cause of our arrival", what could be more courageous then this?

О Deva, killer of KesI, what is use of speaking such words to the people who are aware of the basic facts.

Your present form has been discussed in the Vedanta literature (like the Upanishads), which is the resplendent Brahman and also known by other names. О lord, the sinless yogis, possessing enormous wisdom, they also peep into their hearts to find your image intalled therein.

The supreme tattva which has been sung in the Vedas, happens to be your resplendent and virtuous form. This aspect is well-known to me.

О Visnu, the one who has been eulogised in the Vedas as the Paramapada, by whom the resplendent tattva is established, that happens to be your real form. This fact is well known to me.

О lord, О Visnu, the word от, which is recited and is sung in the form of speech, you represent the same supreme soul. Therefore you can not claim that you are unaware of the cause of our arrival here.

О Govinda, О Hari, had anything been imperceptible from you, then the words spoken by you could have been correct. Therefore you cannot plead the ignorance of the cause of our arrival here.

О Kesava, the one from whom the universe had appeared in earlier times, and in whom the same was absorbed at the time of dissolution, it is the same resplendent body, (presently possessed by you). This is what is well known to me.

О Hari, the lord of present past and future, you are the creator of all and illumine my heart. In whichever form I conceive you appear in my heart in the same form.

О excellent one, using my wisdom, when I decide that the wind too represents Visnu, then you appear in my heart as the wind.

О lord, whenever my wisdom conceives you to be the sky as Visnu, then you establish yourself in the same form before me.

Whenever I think that the earth is Visnu, then you appear before me in Parthiva form.

О lord, whenever, I think that rasa (juice) represents Visnu, then you establish yourself in my heart in the same form.

О lord, when I recall your illustrious form, then you enlighten my heart in the same form.

О Deva, О Kesava, when I resolved that the moon alone is Shri Hari, then I visualise you in my heart in the same form.

When I think that you have the form of solar disc, then you appear in my heart in the same form.

Therefore, you represent everything, this is the resolve of my wisdom. Therefore, О Janardana, you cannot claim ignorance of the purpose of my arrival here.

О Visnu, believing in this doctrine, you remain unconcerned with the pain, we are suffering from. О lord, feeling extremely painful, we have arrived here to take refuge in you.

О Kesava, we are suffering badly, and you donot care for the same. Therefore, we are pained to think that we people are extremely unfortunate, because we have fallen from favour and you do not remember us.

О Janardana, there are two Ksatriya princes, who after achieving boons from lord Siva, have become arrogant and are known by the names of Hamsa and Dimbaka. О Kesava, both of them, claiming that the Grahastha — asrama is the best, started causing trouble to us.

They wandered here and there uttering many sinful words, and indulged in auspicious talk, and are disrespectful to us.

О Deva, I narrated to you an other intolerable crime, that has been committed by them. Look at, the thousands of hanging baskets, wooden vases, the bamboo baskets, which were all reduced by them to pieces.

You look he the other henious crime committed by them. My kaupin has also been tom by them to pieces, which happens to be our biggest asset.

O Jagadisvara, both of them, breaking our kamandalus have turned it like the skull-you as a Ksatriya, always protects us, but inspite of that we have to face this type of misery. This is quite astonishing. You have always been protecting us. You are always omnipresent, but still we could not be protected.

I am short of wisdom. What should I do? All of us are quite unfortunate. О lord of the universe, you tell us, with whom should we take refuge?

In case, both of them remain alive, then all the three lokas would be destroyed.

None of the Brahmanas, Ksatriyas or Sudras would survive.

О Naresvara, both of them are extremely powerful, arrogant, harsh, and holders of dandas. All the gods including Indra cannot stand before them.

Neither Bhisma nor the terribly strong king Bahnlka can face both of them. О Shri Krishna, 0 Hari, Jarasandha who is horrible among the Ksatriyas, also cannot face them, because their pride has immensely been increased because of the boon they received from lord Siva. Both of them remain together. They are neither separate from each other, nor do they develop any conflict between them.

Therefore, you alone have to kill both of them and save the three worlds from disappointment, otherwise you claim of being the protector of the world is becoming infructious.

What is the use of speaking more here you better save all the lokas". Thus speaking, Durvasa in utter rage, kept quiet.

Here ends chapter — 111, of Bhavisya Parva, of the Harivathsa Purana, a supplement of the epic of Mahabharata, relating to the Meeting of the sage Durvasa in Sudharma Sabha. (Vrs. 1-70, P.T. = 14,178)
