The foremost of the Daityas were clad in different types of costumes and pastes, and the Danavas holding their shining weapons, reached before lord Hrsikesa, who was about to measure, the three worlds with his three steps.

The lord trampled all the Danavas and Daityas under his feet and, took to gigantic form and at once usurped the entire earth.

While measuring the three worlds, lord Vamana, became glamorous like the sun. At the time of his crossing the earth, both the sun and the moon reached between his breasts. When he was about to cross the sky, then the sun and the moon reached before his thighs.

Still above, while crossing the heaven, both the sun and the moon, reached the level of his knees. The Brahmanas, observing the form of Visnu with enormous prowess, describe his virat form accordingly.

Shri Hari, at that point of time, conquering the three worlds as a whole, killed the prominent asuras and then bestowed the kingship of earth to Indra.

Then the powerful lord Visnu, bestowed the kingship of the Nether world to the Daitya king Bali.

Receiving it, the Daitya king Bali, using his own wisdom and started living in Patala (nether world).

Living there, the immensely powerful king Bali, engaging himself in excellent type of meditation, spoke to lord Visnu who is worshipped by the universe, thus.

" О Deva, what should be done by you. You please tell me." Then lord Visnu, the foremost of the gods spoke to Bali — the king of Daityas.

Visnu said — "O great asura, I am extremely happy with you. Therefore, I bestow a boon on you. You shall meet with welfare always. You better ask for a boon and have your desire fulfilled.

You should not disobey the command of Sukracarya — your preceptor. This is my command for you. By obeying his command, you would meet with welfare.

Then lord Visnu, the younger brother of Indra, the excellent god, who is all powerful spoke to Bali — the Daityaking with excellent speech.

О Daitya, the water of Sarhkalpa poured by you over my hand, which was received by me, because of that, you shall have no danger from the gods at all.

О great asura, the nether world known as Sutala, should be used by you as your dwelling place with other Daityas and your attendants.

Keeping in view my instructions, you should never disobey the command of Indra.

О great asura, all the gods are adorable for you. О excellent one, by living in the nether world, you enjoy all the comforts and perform the best of yajnas giving adequate daksinas. You would achieve all the desired things. You will achieve on this earth as well as beyond it, the everlasting comforts.

Because of my grace, you will always enjoy the suzerainty over the Daityas. When you cross the limitations laid out by me, then the valorous gods would bind you with the serpent noose.

You should always bow in reverance to the gods like Indra and others. Indra is my elder brother, therefore you should obey his command.

Bali said — О excellent god of gods and carrier of sarhkha cakra and gada, you are the foremost of the gods, Mahesvara of all the world, the excellent god, while living in Patala, which part of the universe would be available for our livelihood? You kindly tell me.

О Deva, destroyer of the enemies, о best of the gods, what would serve me as my food? You kindly speak out to me, to enable me to get eternal satisfication.

Lord Visnu said — О Daitya, the Sraddhas performed without a Srotriya Bramana, the studies carried out without following brahmacarya, the yajnas performed without daksindj homa performed without a priest, the charities given without faith, and havisya without samkaras are presented to you.

О king of the Daityas, the merits earned by the people who are jealous of me and my devotees, the merits of Agtiihotris engaged in sale and purchase, the donation without faith, and performing of the yajnas without faith, would belong to you by my grace.

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, listening to the words of lord Visnu, Bali — the Daitya king said, "It will be done as disired." Then obeying the command of the lord, the Daityas entered the nether world, thundering aloud.

In the mean time lord Visnu also divided the earth into various countries.

He bestowed the suzerainty of Eastern side also known as Aindri — to Indra, Yama - the lord of Pitrs was given the kingship of the southern region.

Varuna was made the king of the western region, while Kubera — the lord of Yaksas was declared the lord of the northern region.

Ananta — the lord of serpents was given the lower regions, while some was alloted the lordship of the upper regions. Thus distributing the kingship of all the three lokas, lord Visnu — the foremost of the valorous people, retired to the heaven, being adored by the great Rishis.

Then establishing Indra over the throne of the heaven, Visnu (Vamana) the lord of all the bhiitas, retired to his abode. With the departure of lord Vamana — the glorious one, all the gods, making Indra as a leader, were filled with bliss.

Vaisarhpayana said — О Janamejaya, then the seven hooded serpents known as Kambala and Asvatara and other serpents, captivated Baii with the noose of serpents, after the departure of lord Visnu to the heaven. As a result of this Bali — the son of Virocana was feeling extremely painful. At that point of time Narada the divine Rishi suddenly arrived there.

Finding the king Bali, facing misery, Narada's heart was filled with compassion and he therefore spoke to Bali — the foremost of the asuras. "I shall speak out a method to you to free yourself from this misfortune.

The only remedy for this is to recite a stotra for lord Visnu-who is beyond beginning or the end, is beyond destruction, eternal, abode of wisdom, is the lord of gods known as Vasudeva.

О lord of Daityas, you with a purified heart, devote your mind in the same lord and recite the stotra and by so doing you shall be freed for the bondage, soon."

Thereafter Bali — the son of Virocana, controlling all the sense oragans, with auspicious and peaceful mind, folding his hands learnt from Narada, the stotra known as Moksa-vimsaka.

Learning the divine stotra from Narada, Bali the great, asura, started eulogising the lord, who has redeemed the earth.

Bali said, "The one who is the lord of serpent Ananta, is eternal, Mahatma, who sleeps in the water, having the divine form, who produced a lotus from his navel, I offer my salutation to the same lord Visnu.

О lord, you are the death for the god of death. Your body has the lustre of the seven suns, you have measured the three worlds. On the strength of your truthfulness, you kindly free me from this bondage.

At the time of dissolution, when the sun and the moon disappear, the yajnas and the tapas also diappear, then you again think of the creation of the universe, (and with your desire you produce them again.) with the influence of that truth, you kindly free me from the bondage.

During the time of dissolution, Markandeya — the great sage, had visualised Brahma, Rudra, Indra, Vayu, Agni, rivers, serpents, mountains etc. in your belly. With the strength of that truth, you kindly free me from this bondage.

Markandeya, in earlier times, entering your belly had visualised the entire universe in your belly with all the mobile and immobile beings of the universe. On the basis of that truth, you kindly free me from the bondage.

You are a yogi, and you alone, with the help of yogamaya, can create the three worlds again, and pervade there in as an antaryami soul. On the basis of that truth, you better relieve me of the bondage of the serpent noose.

You with the help of Yoganidra, sleep over the watery bed, again think about the worlds. On the basis of the same truth, you kindly free me from this bondage.

You, taking to the forms of veda and yajna had rescued the earth from the deep waters on the basis of truth. You now rescue me on the basis of the same truth, from this misery.

О Hari, you rescued the yajnas with your tusk and arranged for three pindas for the manes. With the influence of the same truth, you relieve me from the serpent noose.

О Deva, when all the gods fled infright from Hiranyakasa, at that point of time it was you who protected them. On the strength of the same truth, you get me released from the bondage.

Taking to the form of a boar with long mouth, you had cut off the head of Hiranyaksa with the use of cakra. On the strength of the same truth, you kindly get me freed from the bondage.

In earlier times you had broken to pieces the head and the bone of Hiranyakasipu, merely with a humkara. You therefore kindly rescue me from this bondage on the basis of that truth.

О Deva, in earlier times, in full view of Brahma, you had rescued the Vedas from Madhu and Kaitabha. On the basis of the same truth, you relieve me from the bondage.

Taking to the form of Hayagrlva, you killing Madhu and Kaitabha — the two Daityas, you returned all the Vedas back to Brahma. Therefore on the basis of the same truth, you get me released from the bondage.

Even the gods, Danavas, Gandharvas, Yaksas, Siddhas, great Nagas are unable to visualise your end. On the basis of the same truth, you kindly redeem me.

Your son known by the name of Apantaratma, had written commentaries of all the Vedas, on the basis of that truth, you get me free from the bondage.

The Vedas, the yajnas, Agnilokas (homas), Pitr-yajnas and haviryajna are your secrets. On the basis of those truths, you get roe released from this bondage.

The Rishi named Dirghatamas, because of the curse from his father or the preceptor, was blind from birth, to whom the eyes were restored by your grace. On the basis of this truth, you kindly get me released from this bondage.

The elephant king, became miserable because of his capture by a crocodile and was placed in a miserable condition. But you got him released from the danger. On the basis of that truth, you get me released from this bondange.

You are imperishable, eternal, devoted to the Brahmanas, are compassinate to your devotees, you therefore get me released on the basis of that truth.

I pray to the holder of couch, disc, club, lotus and the Saramga bow, besides Garuda, offering my salutation to them. Let them get me released from this bondage.

Then the conch, cakra, gada, lotus, Saraiiga bow Garuda and others pleased the lord and said, “You kindly get Bali released from the bondage.”

Having been pleased with his prayer, then lord' Visnu commanded Garuda the killer of the Nagas thus, 'You go and get the Daitya king released from the bondage."

Then the immensely valorous Garuda, fluttering his wings, reached the place, where the king Bali was kept in the serpent bondange.

Knowing about the arrival of Garuda, all the Nagas were frightened with the presence of the son of Vinata, then releasing Bali from the bondage, they fled away to the city of Bhogapuri.

By the grace of lord Visnu, the Daitya king Bali, having been deprived of the fortunes, felt painful at heart, lowering his head. At that point of time, Garuda, the eater of the serpents, spoke to the Daitya king.

Garuda said — О valorous king of Danavas, lord Visnu, has given a message for you that you getting release from the bondage, should dwell in Patala with your friends and other kiths and kins.

О Danava, you need not move even two Kosas away from this place. In case you neglect this command, then your head would break into pieces.

On hearing the words of Garuda — the king of birds, Bali, the king of Danavas said, "0 lord of birds, I shall follow the limitation specified by Mahatma Ananta. Let the lord make arrangement for my livelihood, by which I may be able to live here with comfort and may be able to feel contentment and satisfication.

On hearing the words of Bali, Garuda said, "The lord has already specified the means of livelihood for you.

Such of the people, who, unaware of the repentience and will perform the yajnas without following the proper way, the entire part of the said yajna shall belong to you.

The gods shall not accept the share of their yajnas and with that you will gain strength. You will always live with comfort.

О valorous king of Da.navas, lord Visnu in the form of Vamana, the son of Kasyapa has sent this message for you.

Vaishampayana said — (Thus speaking, Garuda left the place) A person who shall recite the stotra of lord Ananta, which removes all the sins, with devotion, all his sins are washed out.

In case someone has attracted the sin of killing a cow or a Brahmana, then with the reciting of this stotra he would be freed from these sins, with the influence of this stotra a sonless person gets a son and an unmarried girl would achieve a suitable husband.

A pregnant woman is atonce relieved of the labour pain and gives birth to a son. Such of the yogic and the followers of the Samkhya philosophy who are desirous of- achieving moksa, they with the reciting of this stotra, getting freed from the sins, will (achieve the place of the lord).

This stotra of lord Ananta, bestows on people all their desirous. A person who getting up in the early morning, taking bath, and controlling his mind, recites this stotra he gets all his desires fulfilled. There is no doubt about it.

Thus the story of the lord Vamana has been narrated. The Brahmanas well versed in the Vedas, thus recite the glory of lord Visnu.

A king, who, getting himself purified, observing all the rules, listens with devotion, the divine story of lord Visnu, he overpoweres his enemy like lord Visnu, earning enormous wealth and fortunes.

He like lord Vamana, is loved by all the people and there is always an increase in his sons, grand sons as well as the fortunes.

Lord Janardana gets pleased with a person who recites thus stotra and it fulfills all the desires. This is what has been ordained by Shri Krishna — Dvaipayana Vyasa.

Here ends chapter — 72, of Bhavisya Parva, of the Harivarhsa Purana, a supplement of the epic of Mahabharata, relating to the entrusting of the kingship of nether world to Daitya king Bali. (Vrs. 1-109, P.T. = 13,007)
