Indra prays to the moon, killing of Daityas by moon and Varuna, appearing of Maya Danava and Kalanemi in the battle





Vaishampayana spoke: О Janamejaya, then Indra, the well wisher of the gods, feeling extremely delighted, said,‘Very well, it will be done accordingly.” Then he himself spoke to the moon who used snow as his weapon.

О Soma, you proceed at once and help Varuna, the holder of a noose. By so doing the demons would face destruction while the gods will achieve victory.

Your prowess is unprecedented, you are the lord of constellations and other planets. You are well aware of the tattvas of the juices and the people claim all the living being are carrying the tattvas provided by you.

Like the ocean your rise and decline always remains invisible like the ocean. You change the times in the world, besides the day and night.

О soma, the reflection of the earth over your dise serves as the mark of rabbit. The learned people, working on the constellations and the devoties of moon, also do not know correctly your reality.

You are lodged beyond the path of the sun and beyond the Jyotir mandala. You, with your illumining body, resmoving the darkness, you illuminate the entire world.

Your rays are white in nature. Your body is like the snow you. You have the symbol of a rabbit. You are creator of the adorable time. The juice of Yajnas emerges out of you.

You are the lord of cereals and osadhis, place of origin of the activities as well as the water and by nature are adored with cool creepers. Your rays are cool. You are the base of nectar. Your vehicle has the white complexion.

You are of illustrious body. You are the lustre of men, women and the gods. You are soma for the gods who live on the same. You are pleasant for all the living beings. You are the destroyer of darkness and the king of the constellations.

Therefore, you together with your army joining with Varuna-who is ready for waging the war march on and subjugate the illusion which is burning us.

Soma said — О lord of gods, lord of the universe, you are commanding me for waging the war and for that purpose, I am, in order to destroy the illusion of the Daityas, going to shower the snow, which will destroy the illusion.

Look here in the great war, how the Danavas perish with the fall of hail storm and snow. You will find as to how their illusion gets destroyed with the fall of hails and snow and their arrogance is lost.”

Vaishampayana said: О king, thereafter, the moon dropped the measured hail storm like the dropping of rain, which started capturing the Daityas.

In the horrible war, Varuna the holder of noose and the moon with to white rays striking the demons with noose and with the fall of hails kept on killing the Danavas.

With the attack of noose and snow both soma and Varuna — the lords of water, started roaming about in the battle ground like too oceans.

With the pouering of the rain by both of them to army of Danavas was submerged in water, which appeared to have been drowned as the water of Samvrataka clouds drown the people in the vast water during the time of dissolution.

Thus both of the moon and Varuna, making use of the rays and the noose, started destroying the illusion created by the Daityas.

The moon with cool rays caught the Daityas, while Varuna did so with the nooses who were made motionless by both of the like the mountain without its peaks.

With the strike of the cool rays of the moon and with the strike of the snow Daityas started falling on the ground. All their limbs were covered with snow. At that point of time they looked like the fire without heat.

At the same time the wonderful planes of the Daityas also started falling from the heaven, becoming lustreless.

The illusory Danava, Maya, observed that many of the demons had been captured by Varuna with his noose in the heaven, while others had been made motionless by the moon with the fall of snow or his rays.

Then the foremost of the Danavas, with the help of his son Kraunca, exposed the well know mountaneous illusion, which could spread every where according to one’s desire. It spread a vast net of rocks or stone slabs, then dropping the heavy stone slabs the sound of which appeared like laughing. The fore parts of the slabs had become rough because of rubbing with the trees. The mountaineous illusion could be found in the mountain caves which served as the dwelling places of lions, tigers, elephants with the trumpeting of the elephants, it appeared as if the illusion created thundering sound or the roars of the lions. In the illusory mountain, the wolves were found everywhere. The trees of the that place were shaking with the forceful blowing of winds.

The mountain illusion with the sound of the striking of the rocks, with the rain of stones and with the felling of the trees started injuring the gods. By so doing the Daityas regained, some confidence some how.

With the influence of the illusion of that Daitya, the illusions the moon and Varuna disappeared. The rain of iron balls as well as the stones started fulling on the gods.

As the walking on the ground became difficult because of mountain, similarly, with the fall of the parts of stone slabs and the spread of the parts of mountains and the trees, the ground became uneven and it became difficult to walk over.

No god was visible in the battle ground, who had not been injured by stones, or hurt by the stone slabs, or whose path had not been obstructed with the fall of the uprooted trees.

Except the lord holder of clubs, the entire army of gods became helpless and inactive. The bows of all of them fell from their hands and with the damage of the weapons, the faces of all of them were faded out.

Of course, lord Visnu, at that point of time remained undisturbed and because of his patient nature lord Visnu, could not be enraged.

Lord Janaradana, having the complexion of cloud, who was well aware of the time waited for the time of the start of war. He wanted to observe the fight between the gods and Daityas.

On the other hand the illusion created by Maya Danava, descending on earth, was spreading everywhere. The lord commanded the fire god and wind god for its destruction.

Both of them moved forward cooperoting with each other. Both of them who could carry the burden of fire flames, having been inspired with the commonand of lord Visnu started destroying the demonic illusions.

Both the wind god and the fire god moving together, they started destroying the demon army, reduced to ashes the moutaneous illusion. It was completely destroyed.

Initially the wind storm was blown in the battle ground then with the rising of the fire flames with the wind started spreading everywhere. Thus both the fire god and the sun — god, started roaming about in the battle ground as if sporting together.

The Danavas then started falling getting reduced to ashes. Their ashes started flying with the force of the terrific wind. In this way the task of the fire god was over.

On the other hand, having been injured with the terrific force of the wind, the planes of the demons, started falling here and there. With the destruction of the bondage of illusion, it started praying lord Visnu.

All the efforts of the Danavas become infructuous. All the gods then having been filled with delight, started uttering well- done, well-done.”

Indra-possessing a thousand eyes, became victorious, while Maya Danava was defeated. All the directions were purified and the dharma started spreading everywhere.

The path of the Moon became praiseworthy. The sun was established in his path. All the three lokas started moving in their natural way and the humans pat- ronised dharma as their only associate.

The limitations of the death were established. The task of perfoming the sacrifice went on properly. The gods started receiving their share of the Yajha and indicated well the path of the heaven.

All the Lokapalas started roaming in their respectives regions, fearlessly. The people with spotless souls, devoting themselves to the performing of tapas, shared the upliftment and growth. The wicked people started facing destruction.

The groups of gods became delightful, while the Daityas were filled with gloom. All the three feet of dharma were established, while Adharma was left with only one foot.

The path followed by the noble people for achieving moksa was opened again. The people of all the Varnas and four asramas were devoted to their respective asramas.

All the kings, devoting themselves in the service of the people, earned special grace. The glory and prayers of gods were sung everywhere.

All the miseries of the people were removed. The hard and severe tapas was turned into the pleasant tapas. When the great efforts of the wind god and the fire god were over, then they getting spotless, delghtful and were considered to be the foremost in the world, because of their victory had delighted the people making them quite comfortable.

The great Danava known by the name of Kalanemi, on learning that the fire and wind gods had terrified the demons, arrived in the battle ground to face the gods.

His head was adorend with a resplendent crown. His feed had been decorated with anklets issing dingling sound. His arms were adorned with armlets, with the use of the silver coat of arms over his body, he appeared like the Manderacala Mountain.

In his hundred arms, he had held an equal number of weapons which projected him as a horrible one. He had a hundred heads as well. When the Danava stood with his hundred heads, then he looked as the huge mountain with a hundred peaks.

Not only this he was shining like the forest fire in the dry forest, rising flames.

His hair was of the complexion of smoke, but his moustaches were of green colour.

His teeth were protruding and his face was an astonishing on. He had such a vast body which appeared as having been spread in the three worlds.

He was balancing the sky with his arms, he could throw off many of the mountains with his kicks, with his breath, he could drive off the clouds at for off places.

He had vast red eyes. He looked with side glances. He appeared illustrious like Indra — the lord of the heaven. It appeared as if he had arrived with the intention of reducing all the gods to ashes.

He scolded the gods and covered all the ten directions. It appeared as if the hungry god of death was standing at the time of dissolution.

His palm was quite handsome, the knots of the fingers were quite developed, he wore the garments and his kavaca had shaken a little. He with the forepart of the thick right hand was indicating the Danava, who had fallen with the force of the gods, to get up again saying “o valorous warriors you get up again.”

He was terrific like yama for the enemies, the same terrific Kalanemi on his arrival in the battle ground, all the gods present there were panic striken and started stating at him.

Raising the feet quite high while attacking the said Kalanemi was visualised by all the living beings like Trivikrama, measuring the three worlds with his feet.

Terrifying all the gods, the asura, when put his first foot in the battle ground, his costumes started fluttring with the blowing of the wind.

Roaming about in the battle ground, Maya the king of Asuras, moved forward and embraced him. At that point of time Kalanemi looked graceful with Maya, like lord Visnu appears graceful with Indra.

Finding that Kalanemi appears like the god of the death, Indra and other gods felt pointful at heart.

Here ends chapter — 46 of Harivamsa Parva of the Harivariisa Purana, a khilabhaga of the Mahabharata relating to Indra’s prayer to moon, killing of Daityas by the Moon and Varuna, besides appearing of Maya-Danava and Kalanemi in the battle ground. (Vrs.1-62, P.T.=2541)
