The wonderful war of Tarakamaya and preparation of the gods for waging the war

Vaishampayana spoke: О excellent one, at the time of the war, you have listened to the expansion of the demon army. Now you listen to the extent of the size of the army of gods, which was under the command of lord Visnu.

The gods like Aditya, Vasus, Rudras valorous Asvinikumaras, wearing all the Kavaras (coat of arms) assembled according to the strength of each one of them, with their followers.

First of all the thousand eyed Indra — the leader of gods reached there, leading the army of the gods, mounted over his vehicle — the elephant Airavata.

To his left, his chariot, which had the speed of Garuda, made of gold and gems was also moving on.

The gromps of gods, Gandharvas and Yaksas, followed him. At the same time thousands of Brahmarsis who added to Indra’s glory were also walking with him.

The groups of clouds, thundering like vajra, together with the lightening and the rainbow, were marching with Indra. They appeared as if the mountains were walking at will. The chariot of Indra was protect by the clouds.

Lord Indra, who is adored by the Brahmanas, while performing the homa, for whose sake the trumpets are sounded in the heaven, when he moves in procession, by the gods, with whom the apsaras move while dancing, the same Indra was marching towards the battle ground, mounted over the elephant Airavata.

The chariot of Indra, having the flage with bamboos, which moved with the speed of the wind and the mind and was driven by a thousand steed, was shining like the sun.

Indra’s charioteer is known as Matali was surrounded with the lustre of the sun and looked like the Meru mountain.

Yama, the god of death, stood at the start of the army of gods. He was holding a danda and mudgara in both the hands, frightening the Daityas, with the lion like roar.

Varuna who as desirous of an opportunity for waging the war, reached there like the wild ocean, which overflows its shores, took his position among the gods. He was guarded by the four oceans as well as the serpents brandishing their tongues. He was adored with the armlets of conches and the beads. He had a watery body. He was weilding the noose. He was engaged in thousand types of sports and the water raised by the wind, (mounted over the chariot driven) by the white steed resembling the moon rays. His white garment was fluttering. He was adorned with ornaments of beads. His beautiful lips resembled the coral or red tender leaves. He was decorated with ornaments of beads and his dark limbs issued the excellent grace. Heaps of garlands were hanging over his belly.

Kubera — the lord of nine treasues was immensely valorous, whose excellent body was resembling the lapislazuli, was shining. He was mounted over the palanquin carried by the humans, carrying the treasures known as Samkha and padma. He was holding the club in his hand and appeared over the battle field. He was accopanied with the army of Yaksas, Raksasas and the Guhyakas.

Seated in the Puspaka plane, Kubera the friend of lord Siva, looked quite graceful. At that point of time he looked like Siva himself.

The eastern wing of the army of gods was protected by the thousand eyed Indra. The southern wing of the divine army was being looked after by Yama — the lord of Pitrs. The western wing of the army was being looked after by Varuna, while the northern side of the divine army was being taken care of by Kubera — having the human as a vehicle. Thus the four powerful lokapalas were guarding the army of the gods from all the four sides.

The sun god arrived in the battle field mounted over the single wheeled chariot driven by seven horses. His chariot was glittering with the best of sunrays. The chariot which moved round the Meru mountain, rotated like the wheel over the gate of the heaven, which remains imperishable in the force, the same sun illuminated the entire world. It is with the same chariot that the sun god rises and sets in the universe.

The sungod, has thousands of rays, who is resplendent with his own lustre, who has twelve forms and he started roaming about in the army of gods mounted over the same chariot.

The moon with the cool moon rays, looked graceful mounted over the chariot driven by the white horses. He delighted the entire universe with his rays filled with coolness of water and the snow.

The Daityas, spotted the moon — god, who is followed by the constellations and planets, who has the cool rays, who happens to be the ruler of the Brahmanas, whose body has the blue spot of the shadow of the earth, who has the darkness of the night, who is the lord of the stars shining in the sky, who is the abode of all the nectar, is the protector of all the Osadhis and is the treasure of nectar, is the foremost part of the world, is quite pleasant and cool juice, the same moon god was spotted by the Daityas carrying the weapon of snow.

The wind god, who happens to be the life of all the bhUtas, who moves in the body of the humans and other living beings as prana, арапа, vyana, Somana and odana, in five forms, who has seven skandhas, like avaha, pravaha and others, besides maintains the mobile and immobile beings of the universe, who is considered as the driver of the fire, who is the source of origin of all, besides being Isvara, because of whom, Sabda, tanmatra, Nisadarsabha etc. when operating is called the gad or movement, who is called as bodyless by the PancamahdbhQtas, who is called as moving in the sky as well as moving with great speed, who is said to have been born out of the sky, the one who is the source of life of all, the same wind god, antaginising the Daityas with his force started flowing with great speed with clouds.

The wind god then started sporting with forty nine Maruts, Gods, Gandharvas and Vidyadharas, like the serpent emerging out of the snake holes or the shining sword coming out of the sheath.

The large number of serpent kings who had become the arrows of Indra were spreading their hoods started roaming about in the sky emitting poison from their hoods.

The presiding deities of the mountains, also carrying several of the rocks, peaks, besides the trees with a hundred branches, were present in order to serve the gods.

Lord Hrsikesa, adorable by all from whose naval a lotus appeared at the start of the universe, who had measured already the entire world with he three steps, who resembles the lustre of fire god at the time of the dissolution, who is the lord of the universe, who resides in the ocean as Narayana and because of this the ocean, serves as his sleeping place, who had destroyed the demon named Madhu, who is the consumer of havisya and is adored in the sacrifices, to whom the earth, fire, water, wind and the sky serve as bhiltas in his Virat form, the one who always lives with equal treatment for all, who expands peace on earth, is the destroyer of the enemies, origin of the universe, cause or the seed of the universe, besides being the preceptor of the universe. He is the one who always displays large heart in the world, who is the carrier of cakra as well as the gada and known as Vistiu, possesses the resplendence of the rising son, carries the cakra-destroyer of enemies, was established in the middle of the army of the gods, looking at him it appeared as if the sun had been brought there with the disc.

Garuda the enemy of serpents serves him as his vehicle, the same lord Visnu was carrying in his left hand the black coloured club which sends the enemies to the abode of Yama. In the rest of his arms, he was carrying the Saranga bow.

Lord Narayana who is the remover of all the ills and sins, was mounted over Garuda, who devours the serpents and is the younger brother of Aruna. The wings of Garuda were quite handsome. Because of his beautiful wings he was also known by the name of Suparna. The pleasent lustre was spreading from his wings. Garuda who flew in the sky could fly with the speed greater than the wind. When he flew in the sky with great speed, the sky went in turmoil. He always held a serpent king in his beak, which made him look graceful. He appeared high like the mountain Mandracala, which served as a churning rod at the time of the churning of the ocean. At the time of the war between the gods and the demons, his prowess was increased hundreds of times. When he went to the heaven for the collection of nectar, at that point of time, Indra for the protection of the nectar, shot a vajra on Garuda. The sign of that attack was visible even at that time. Garuda had the crown on head like the peacock, besides a tuft. He was adorned with the kandalas made of molten gold. His wings were of different colours, which served him as his garments, as a result of which he appeared like a huge mountain, with several metals and minerals. He had a vast chest, over which an excellent diamond (extracted from the serpenthood) was hanging and was shining like the moon with cool moonrays. He, covering the sky with his womderful wings, as if the sky had been covered with two clouds at the time of dissolusion. In the banner of lord Hari, the figure of Garuda was embossed having wings of blue, yellow and red colours. The flag post over which the flage was fluttering was quite tall.

At that point of time, all the gods and the Rishis, started following lord Visnu reciting several types of prayer.

The army of the gods was well organised by Kubera. Yama was the foremost leader of the army of gods. Varuna — the lord of waters had surrounded the divine army by means of ocean from all the sides, while Indra, by his presence was adding to the grace of the army with the rays of the moon, the entire army of gods looked bright and spotless. With the forceful blowing of the wind, a terrific sound was being created. The fire god was burning with high flames in the divine army. Such a type of the divine army reached there for fighting with the demons.

The one who had always been victorious, who could tolerate all adversities, was always resplendent, the directions were illuminated with his lustre. Such an enthusiastic army of gods, got ready for the waging of the war.

At that point of time, Brhaspati, the sou of Angira and preceptor of the gods, offerings prayer spoke, “Let the gods meet with welfare.” Thereafter Sukracaya the preceptor of the demons said, “Let the Daitya meet with welfare.”
