Kalanemi’s glory in the battle ground

Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, as th cloud expands at the end of the summer season and the start of the rainy season, similarly the immensely illustreous and great asura — Kalanemi, in order to support the Danavas, marched forward.

Finding him spreading in the three worlds, all the demon kings suddenly stood up as if they had achieved the best of the nectar. At that point of time, their entire fatigue disappeared.

All the demons including Maya and Tara, were freed from worry, therefore, they being- desirous of getting victorious in the Tarakamaya battle, looked graceful standing in the battle field.

At that point of time all the Danavas, who were engaged practicing the the war games, setting up the army formations, felt extremely happy at the sight of Kalanemi.

All the chief commandors, of Maya, who were present there, shedding all the fear, got ready for waging the war enthuasiti- cally.

All the demons like Maya, Tara, Varaha, valorous Hayagriva, Sveta — the son of Vipracitti, khara and Lambha, besides Arista — the son of Bali, Kisora, Ustra and Svarabhanu, who could fight with the gods with wickedness, were well versed in the use of arms, besides the learned people well versed in tapas. In addition to these the competent Danavas, reached before Kalanemi.

All of the Danavas were delightfully anxious, holding the excellent weapons in their hands, making Kalanemi to lead them and under his command they took their positions at the start of the battlefield. Many of Danavas used their vast shoulder and long arms as their weapons. Many of the demons carried heavy clubs, cakras, battle-axes, stone slabs resembling the mountains, the rocks fallen with striking of the Vajras, pattisas, bhindipalas, parighas, several other excellent weapons, terrific big guns which could easily kill the enemy, musalas terrific like Yama, the weapons which could be thrown at the enemy, Mudgaras, yupas open yantras, argolas — the ends of which were sharpened by the harmmering, the spreaded nooses, spears, the serpents with flowing tongues, the fast moving arrows, Vajras which could be thrown, the illumming tomaras, the sharp edged bare swords, the tridents which had been sharpened besides several other warriors holding the weapons took their positions for waging the war.

Several of the weapons was shining like the lightening. The entire Danava army looked graceful, like the constellations covered by the clouds in the rainy season or the sky with the lightening.

On the other hand with the lustre of the sun and the moon, with warm and cool lustre, the army of gods, also looked extremely graceful.

The divine and the vast army of the gods was quite forceful, using the stars as their flags, covered with the costumes of the clouds. The constellation severd them as the delightful lights. The army of gods was being protected by Yama, Indra, Kubera and learned Varuna. They included the resplendent fire god and wind god. The entire army of gods was dependent on lord Narayana. It appeared like the flooded water of the ocean. Because of their holding various types of weapons, it looked horrible. The Yaksas and the Gandharvas, graced the army of gods.

As the earth and the sky strike with each other at the time of dissolution similarly both armies attacked each other at that time.

The battle between the gods and the Daityas, turned horrible. On the one hand was the large hearted forgiveness while on the other hand was the cruel prowess. It was in fact a fight between arrogance and humility.

Out of both the armies the terrific gods and Daityas filled in rage moved forward for waging the war excatly in the same way as the disturbed clouds from the eastern and western oceans.

Out of both the armies these euraged the gods and the Danavas filled with delight and enthusiasm as if two, sets of huge elephants decorated with flowers, had emerged from two mountains.

At that point of time the soldiers of both the sides started blowing conches and beating of drums. The enormous sound of the musical instruments filled the sky as well as the ten directions.

The sound was created with the streching of the cord of the bow, playing on the kettledrums, absorbed the thundering sound of the Daityas.

Then the gods and the demons attacked one another and started killing their respective enemies. The warriors who were desirous of wrestling fights, broke the strong arms of their opponent with the their own arms.

The gods started the use of terrific vajras and parighas made of iron, while the Danavas started using swords and clubs.

The limbs of many of the warriors were broken to pieces, with the attack of clubs. The bodies of many soldiers were reduced to pieces with the striking of the arrows. Several of them fell with the attack of the swords on earth, several of them lay there with their faces towards the ground and the back towards the sky.

Thereafter the soldiers of both the sides, having been filled with rage, fought with one another mounted over the chriots and the planets.

Several of the charioteers, foot soldiers, deserted and fled away from on battle field spotting the enemy opproaching towards them. At that point of time the charioteers were stopped by the charioteers and the foot soldiers by foot soldiers.

The deafening sound of the resembling of the chariots moving ahead, resembled the thundering sound of the cloud in the sky.

Many of the chariots broke to pieces the chariots of the opponents and several of them disappeared in the dust, having been trampled upon by enemy chariots several other chariots could not move further because of the blocking of the road by the broken chariots.

Several of the delightful warriors moved forward removing the bodies of the other soldiers with their own arms. When the warriors carrying the swords and the shields, attacked the enemy, their ornaments issued dangling sound.

Several other soldiers, who had been killed with the use of arms were vomiting blood, as the rain falls in the rainy season from the clouds.

The battle ground was filled with many weapons. The battle ground had become dirty with the falling of the clubs from both the sides. It appeared horrible with the terror displayed by the gods and the demons.

The war appeared to be like the bad day, in which the Danavas had been overcast like the clouds in the sky. The shining weapons of the god were issing lustre like the lightning. Both the sides were showering arrows on the opposite side like the rains.

In the meantime the immensely enraged Kalanemi — the great asura started appearing in his gigantic form like the cloud having been filled with water.

The clouds of enormous size, like the mountain peaks, adorned with the ornaments of lightning over their foreheads, who rained the vajras, were shattered into pieces, after striking with the body of Kalanemi.

When he inhaled long breath in anger, then his eyebrows were curved dropping the drops of sweat and from his mouth,

His arms started spreading towards the sky cross-wise, which appeared as if the five hooded makes were rolling their tongues.

As the high mountains surround the sky, similarly the various types of weapons, arrows from the bow, besides parighas, covered the sky.

He was standing at the starting point of the war and with the force of the wind his costumes were flying in the air. At that point of time, he looked like the Meru mountain peak with the evening sunshine falling over it.

He started killing the gods with the throwing of mountain peaks and the huge trees with his thighs, as Indra had thrown mountains on earth, with the use of Vajra.

Having been so hurt with the attack of Kalanemi, the gods lost their strength even to move with the striking of his arms, besides the swords and other weapons used by him, the foreheads and the chests of the gods were wounded.

Many of the Yaksas, Gandharvas and the Nagas were killed with administering of his fists, while several of then fell down injured.

Kalanemi, frightened the gods in the war to such an extent that they lost their senses and could do nothing to save themselves from the ugly situation.

Не imprisoned the thousand eyed Indra mounted over his elephant Airavata, with his arrows and surprised him. He could not retreat from that place.

Kalanemi snatched away the noose of Vanina and deprived him of the same. Therefore his entire activity in the battle was stopped. He lost all his grace like the cloud without water or the ocean without water.

In the battle ground, with the striking of the parighas like the god of death, Kubera started lamenting. Kubera was deprieved of his function as the god of riches.

He also made Yama, the cause of death for all and holder of danda, senseless. Therefore he getting terrified, reverted to the southern direction.

Similarly he drove out the Lokapalas and took over their responsibilities in his hands. He further expanded his body in all the four directions.

Walking over the divine path of the constellations as per the advice of Rahu, he usurped the royal riches of Soma and his vast kingdom.

He removed the sun with shining rays from the gate of the heaven and usurped his kindom together with ayanas, besides his performance during the day.

Finding the fire god lodged in the mouth of the gods, he forcibly established him in his own mouth. Defeating the wind god he took him under his command.

With the force of his strength, Kalanemi, collected all the rivers and exercised his control over them. All the oceans were turned into the form of his body.

He exercised control of the water of the earth and the sky and establishd the earth with mountains over them.

The great Daitya, who frightened the universe, declared himself as the lord of the five Mahabharatas. Then declaring himself like the entire universe, he usurped the grace of Brahma.

Kalanemi, himself was established as the lokapala. The sun, the moon and other planets were absorbed in his body and he functioned himself for all of them. Agni and Vdyu also formed parts of his body.

Brahma, who is the cause for the creation and the destruction of all the lokas, was discarded and he himself functioned as Brahma as well. At that point of time the Daityas praised him in same way as the gods offer prayer to Brahma.

Here ends chapter — 47, of HarivamSa Parva of the Harivamsa Purana - a khilabhaga of the Mahabharata relating to the Kalanemi’s glory in the battle ground. (Vrs.1-59, P.T.= 2600)

Chapter 48

End of Kalanemi

Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, since Kalanemi indulged in activities contarary to the provision of the Sastras, the Vedas, Dharma, Ksama (forgiveness), Satya (truth) therefore, Laksmi who dwells with Visnu did not remain with him.

In their absence Kalanemi — lord of Danavas got enraged. Therefore, he, in order to subjugate lord Visnu and Vaikuntha approached lord Narayana.

He found that lord Visnu, the carrier of Samkha Cakra and Goda, was seated over the back of Garuda and was weilding the kaumadi-goda for the destructing of the Danavas.

The lustre of his limbs was blue like the clouds with water. He was clad in shining Pitambara resembling the lightening. Lord Visnu was mounted over the Garuda — the son of Kasyapa and had a tuft over his head.

He was the one, who could not be disturbed by anyone, the same lord Visnu, for the destruction of the Daityas, finding him standing in the battle ground felt distrubed at heart and he spoke to him.

“He happens to be the killer of the earlier Danavas, besides Madhu and Kaitabha - the dwellers of oceanic waters.

It is said that he is the battle incarnate for us, who cannot be subjugated. He had destroyed many of our Daitya warriors in the early battles.

He is the same cruel person, who in the battle field becomes shameless like the child, holding weapon in the battle ground. It is he who has widowed the Danava women forever.

He is the same Visnu and the Vaikuntha or the dweller of the heaven. He is ananta for the serpents living in the water besides being Brahma of the self born Brahma.

He happens to be the protector of the gods, who indulge in activities, which are against us. It is at his anger that Hiranyakasipu the lord of Daityas was killed.

Living under his shade the great sages performing three types of Yajnas and homa enjoy the havisya.

He happens to be the main cause of destruction of the Daityas and as inimical to gods. Several of the demon races have vanished in his lust in the battle field.

It is said, he is the same well known Visnu, who sacrifices his life for the sake of the gods in the battle. He uses the cakra over the enemies, which shines like the sun.

He is the death incarnate for the Daityas, but I am today appearing as his death no doubt. This wicked Visnu cannot repeat his previous activities and bear the result of the same.

It is a matter of great fortune that Visnu has appeared here before me. He will be reduced to ashes with my arrows and falling over the ground, he will prostrate before me.

In the battle field today, killing Narayana, who frightens the Danavas, I shall also destroy the gods who are depending on him. By so doing I shall get redeemed from the debt of my ancestors, which will be a matter of great fortune for me.

By taking birth in other Yonis like Matsya, Varaha etc, he used to torture the Danavas in the battle field. Though he is beyond measure, still he appeared in a definite form. He was then known by the name of Padmanabha. In the terrific deluge, made both Madhu and Kaitabha to sleep over his thigh and killed them.

It is he who in the earlier times, in the compasite form of half man and half lion, had killed my father Hiranyakasipu, single handed.

The one who is like the arani wood for the production of fire, and was held by the goddess Aditi in her womb. The same child at the time of Yajna, appeared in the form of a Vamana. At that point of time, he alone, measured the three words with his three feet and snatched them from the rule of Bali.

Now again, presently at the time of Tarakamaya war, he arrived here. But now in conflict with me, he will get destroyed with all other gods.”

Thus speaking evil words against lord Narayana Kalanemi, thought of waging a war with him.

With these writtings of Kalanemi lord Gadharara was not enraged, because he possessed enormous strength of forgiveness. Then smilingly he said.

“О Daitya, you possess little of arrogance and prowess, but having been filled with anger, you are indulging in irrelevant talk, standing here. You discarding patience and forgiveness are indulging in tall talk. Therefore you have aheady been killed by your own fault.

I think you are a degraded person. Disgrace to your enormous prowess. People thuder like you where there are women alone and no men are present there. But such thundering is not suited for a place where men are present.

О Daitya, I find, that you are following the path of your ancestors. How can one live with ease crossing the limitations fixed by Prajapati?

You, being a Danava, are performing the task of the gods. You have usurped the rights of the gods. Therefore you are sure to be destroyed by me and the gods will be restored in their lost positions.”

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, Lord Narayana having a Shrivatsa mark over the chest, when thus spoke in the battle ground, the Danava started laughing there in anger. He at once held the weapons in his hands.

In the battle ground, he lifted up his hundred arms carrying the weapon and then attacked at the chest of lord Visnu. At that point of time the eyes of the Daitya had become undoubtedly red in anger.

The Danavas like Maya and Tara, also finding lord Visnu present in the battle ground, rushed towards him carrying several types of arms.

Thus carrying the weapon the immensely valorous Daityas, attacked the lord Shri Hari, who had never shaken in the battle. He stood there unmoved.

In the meantime Kalanemi had a scuffle with Garuda. He using all the strength at his command in a hundred arms, lifted up a gigantic club which was illumining with its lustre. Lifting up the club, he attacked with it on Garuda. This surprised even lord Visnu.

With the fall of the club over the head of Garuda, he fell on the ground over his paws. His entire body felt painful.

Finding that Garuda was feeling painful because of the attack of the club, getting shattered, the eyes of lord Visnu became red with anger. Then he lifted up the Cakra in his hand.

Then the force of lord Narayana started increasing like Garuda himself. All his four arms started expanding in all the four directions.

Covering all the directions, sky and earth the arms kept on expanding as if they desired to forcefully attack the three lokas.

The Rishis and the Gandharvas started offering prayers for the victory of the lord Madhusudana.

He drew lines over the ground of the heaven with his kirita crown. He covered the sky and the clouds with his costumes. He covered all the directions with his arms and he firmly stood on earth pressing it.

Then lord Visnu lifted up the resplendent Sudarsana cakra, which possesses the lustre like the sun rays, which has a thousand spokes, which is good enough to destroy the enemies, which has been conceived to be burning like the fire flames, which inspite of being horrible, is worth seeing, hearing the name of Sudarsana, the edges of which are made of gold, the navel of which resembles the Vajra, which frightens the enemies, which has been fed with the flesh, fat, narrow and blood of the demons, which is unique in the weapons to be thrown, in the round, the inner side of which, the daggers have been fixed, which is quite vast like ten flower garlands, which can move at will and can take to any form at will, which frightens all the enemies, the divine weapon was created by Brahma himself, which remains overpowered with the rage of the Rishis against the demons, which is filled with arrogance at the time of battle field, with the attack of which all the mobile and immobile living beings of the world get confused and in the great was, with the influence of which the carnivorous creatures get satisfied, such a Sudarsana cakra was lifted up by lord Visnu.

Shri Hari who keeps Laksmi in his heart, reduced the lustre of the Daitya, with the supreme lustre of his own and cut off all the arms of Kalanemi.

At the same time, with the uttering of laugh, by the hundred mouths of Kalanemi, lord Visnu also churned his heads with the cakra, forcibly.

With the severing of the heads and the arms, the Danava remained unshaken and his shoulders dhers and armless body stood in the battle field like the tree without branches.

Then the supreme bird Garuda, spreading his wings, produced the force like the wind, felled Kalanemi, with the striking of his chest.

The headless and armless trunk of Kalanemi, falling from the heaven and while rotating itself, fell on earth, disturbing it.

At the killing of the Daitya, all the gods and the Rishis shouted “well done”, arriving there. They adored lord Visnu, praising him at the same time.

Besides Kalanemi, all other wicked Daitya, having been prevented by the arms of lord Visnu remained motionless there in the battle ground.

Many of the Daityas were hung up by the lord holding their hair. He pressed the throats of several of them, the mouths of several of them were tom out, while the waists of many of them were broken.

Many of the Daityas, having been scorched with the fire of cakra lost their patience as well as their lives. All their limbs were cut off in the air and fell down on the ground.

After the killing of all the Daityas, lord Visnu, he holder of club, becoming successful stood there.

After the end of the destruction in the Tarakamaya war, Brahma, the ground sire of the universe, accompanied with Brahmarsis, Gandharvas, and Apsaras, at once reached that place and adoring lord Narayana spoke.

Brahama said: О lord, you have done a great job, by removing the thorn of the gods. We feel extremely satisfied with the killing of these Daityas.

О lord Visnu, with the killing of Kalanemi at your hands, (you have done well). You alone could kill him and no one else could do so.

Kalanemi used to disregard all the gods besides all the mobile and immobile living beings. Killing the ascetics he used to thunder in my presence.

Therefore with the killing of this Daitya resembling the god of death, by you, I feel extremely satisfied.

Therefore you come here, let you face welfare always. Let us all go to the divine loka. The Rishis seated in the divine assembly shall be waiting for you.

О Acyuta, the best of the orators, reaching there, I with all the great Rishis, shall adore you with divine voice.

О best of the warrious what type of boon can I give you? You infact are the bestower of boons on the gods and the Daityas.

О Visnu, in the battle ground, you bestow the kingdom of Indra to him, which is always developing and thornless.”

At these words of Brahma, the eternal Visnu, with his welfare words spoke to Indra and other gods.

Visnu said - All the gods who have arrieved here, making all their sense organ alert, keeping Indra in the front should listen to the words being spoken by me.

In this war several highly placed Daitya, who are greater than Indra even, have been killed by me including Kalanemi.

Only two Daityas have escaped from this battle one is Bali — the son of Virocana and the other one is Rahu.

Therefore, both Indra and Varuna, should regain their respective lost positions. Yama should look after the southern direction and Kubera — the lord of riches should look after the north.

The moon should appropriately move with the stars and the constellation. The sun god should take care of the two Ayanas, the seasons as well as the years.

The ajya-bhagas of the sacrifices should be offered to the gods, while the Brahmanas should make offering in the fire appropreately according to the Vedas.

All of you should perform homas and sacrifices, for the sake of gods, please the Maharsis by Vedic studies and perform Sraddhas for the manes, satisfying them all completely.

The wind god should move on his path. The fire god should keep an appearing in his three forms, besides the people of the three Varnas should expand their races in the three worlds.

Those who are entitled for receiving diksa in the Yajhas, should continue to perform the Yajhas. The performers of the Yajhas should offer appropriate daksinas to the priests.

The sungod should please all the sense organs, the moon should take care of all the rasas (nectars), the wind god should take care of the breath (life) of the living beings, and engage himself in the welfare activities of the world.

Indra, the lord of gods functions like the mother, by flowing milk like water in the rivers which start from the mounatains, let them flow as usual and then join the ocean.

“О gods, you should be no more afraid of the Daityas and be peaceful at heart. Let all of you meet with welfare. Now I shall proceed to the eternal Brahmaloka.

“You should never have any faith in Danavas in you own house, or in the world, but particularly in the battle ground, because they always conduct themselves in a degraded manner.

They attack suddenly, finding an opportunity. They have no proper limitations. You have pleasent and simple temperament, therefore you are devoted to simple ways.

О gods, I shall surely confuse the wicked Daityas, who have evil ways besides being sinful.

Whenever there is danger from the Danavas, then I shall at once arrive and free your from their danger.

Vaishampayana said — Thus speaking, to the gods, the immensely truthful and gloreous lord Visnu, proceeded on to Brahmaloka, together with Brahma.

O king, whatever had been desired by you from me, has been replied by me. At the time of Tarakamaya war, an astonishing event occured between the Daityas and lord Visnu in Tarakasura war.

Here ends chapter — 48, of Harivansa khanda of the Harivansa Purana — a khilabhaga of the epic of Mahabharata relating to the end of Kalanemi. (Vrs.1-84, P.T.= 2684)
