Partial incarnation of gods at the command of Brahma

Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, listening to the words of the earth, all the gods spoke to Brahma for the establishment of the task of the earth.

“O lord, you relieve the excessive burden of the earth because you happen to be the creator of the bodies of the people besides being the lord of the entire world.

What should the gods like Indra, Vanina, Yama, Kubera and even lord Narayana do?

What should besides, the moon, the sun, the twelve Adityas, eight vasus, eleven Rudras engaged in the welfare of the world, do in this connection.

What should both the divine physicians - Asvinikumaras, Sadhyas of the heaven, Brhaspati, Sukracarya besides Kala and Kalika do in this connection.

О Brahman, what should be done by lord Siva, Visakha, Karttikeya, Yaksas, Raksasas, Gandharvas, Caranas and the huge Nagas.

What can be done in this connection by the birds, mountains, the oceans with high waves, Ganga and other divine rivers?

О lord you give us your command quickly, how could we make use of our amsa. In case you are sure to do the task for the welfare of the earth, then tell us what should be done by us to ignite the flames of war among the rulers?

О grand sire, how can we partially incarnate on earth? Such of the gods out of us, who reside in space and those who are present on earth in human forms, let all of them be born in the races of Brahmanas or royal races, while we shall create progeny on earth without human contact.

Listening to the proposal of the gods, who were trying for a solution to the problem, Brahma, who had been surrounded by the gods said.

О best of the gods, your decision has been liked by me as well. Therefore you should produce on earth people valorous like you.

O excellent gods, all of you should incarnate from your tejas or resplendence and collecting the riches of the three worlds, live on earth, protecting her.

I had been well aware of the danger approaching the earth. Therefore whatever has been done by me for the sake of Bharata dynasty, you please listen from me.

In earlier times, I had been sitting over the seashore of the western ocean, with Kasyapa. At that stage I had been spending my time by listening to the ancient lores based on popular and the Vedic beliefs, which included the Puranas, Itihasa, etc.

While I was so engaged in the aforesaid discussion, the Ganga as well as the ocean appeared before me in human form, in a hurry. The clouds and the wind god also accompanied them.

Because of the high waves, the ocean was quite forceful but he arrived some how controlling the force of the waves. His body had been covered with costumes of aquatic animals.

The lustre of his body appeared spotless like the conches the pearls. He was adorened with the arnaments of corals and gems. Because of his association with the moon, he was creating thudering sound like the clouds.

He disregarding me, crossing his limits, drenched me with his saline water drops.

When the ocean got ready to destroy the place with his overflowing water, then I spoke to him in anger, “Be peaceful”.

At these words of mine (uttered in anger), the ocean became peaceful. His waves were subsided and he getting illumining with RajaLaksmi, stood before me.

Then I, with the intuition of removing the burden of the earth and for your benefit, prononced a curse on the Ganga as well as the ocean.

«O ocean, you arrived before me in the form of a king, therefore, you will become the king of the earth ruling over it.

There also, you will, with your normal performance, will maintain the people besides the carrier of the burden of the race of Bharata.

With my asking you to be peaceful, you became peaceful, therefore, you will have a beautiful body besides being glorious and shall be known in the world as Santanu.

The river Ganga, with vast eyes, the best of the rivers, will come to serve you”.

At these words spoken by me, the ocean who was feeling disturbed spoke, looking at me, «O lord of gods, why have you pronounced a curse on me?

Му body always bows at your command, which has been created by you. It is always at your service. I happen to be your son. Then why have you pronounced a curse on me in this way?”

O lord, on the full moon day, by your grace, I expand (or overflow). 0 lord, having been inspired by this rule in case I crossed my limits, then how am I to be blamed?

O lord, today is the full moon day, with the splashing of my water with the forceful wind, it has reached you, drenching you, then where lies the cause of your pronouncing as curse on me, by you?

In fact I had been disturbed with (the three causes), the full moon day, the force of the wind (which splashes the water) and the terrific clouds.

Thus, О Brahman, I had been disturbed with the forces framed by you yourself, Still in case a crime has been committed by me, then you will please excurse me for the same making the curse infractious.

О Devasvara, there is no one else to provide comfort to me. In case you provide refuge to the one who has taken refuge with you, then extending your compassion on me, be graceful.

The divine river Ganga has descented on earth (and she is not at all at fault). She has to suffer because of my fault. Therefore you kindly be merciful on her.

The great ocean was unaware about the object of relieving earth of the burden, therefore he got frightened with the fire of the curse pronounced by me on him. At that point of time, I reassured him with my sweet voice and said.

О great ocean, you be peaceful. You should not be afraid. I am indeed pleased with you. О lord of rivers, I am going to speak out to you the reason behind this curse. You please listen to me.

О ocean, the lord of rivers, you discanding the body of the ocean, by yogic practices, divide it with two forms (with one form of you remain as the ocean) and with the other one you go and establish yourself in the womb of the race of the Bharata.

О great ocean, the lord of waters, By your becoming a king in the Bharata’s race you possess the royal fortunes and live comfortably, ruling over the four Varnas.

The river Ganga — the foremost of all the rivers, possessing beatiful limbs and the charming body, will serve you.

О Sagara, at my command, you living with pleasure with Janhavi, will forget about the curse which has been pronounced on you by me.

О ocean, you should at once obey my command. You will be married on earth with Ganga with Prajapatya method.

All the eight Vasus have fallen in the neither world due to a curse. I have deputed you to enable then to be born in human form.

This Ganga shall produce from you for the pleasure of the gods, eight Vasus, as your sons.

О ocean, you soon after producing the Vasus shall enhance the glory of the Kuru race. Thereafter you will discard the human body and then get yourself absorbed in the oceanic waters.

О best of the gods, in this way, I realising the burden of the earth in the form of future rulers, have already acted accordingly.

Thus I have sown the seed of the emerging of the race of Santanu. The Vasus, who had been residing in the heaven, have been born from the womb of Ganga, out of those Vasus, seven have already arrived here. But the only eighth Vasu — the son of Ganga, is still hanging on over the earth.

With the union of Satyavati, the second wife of Santanu, with her husband another son named Vicitravirya was born, who was the illustrious king of the race of Kuru.

Only two sons of Vicitravirya are found on earth presently and are known by the names of Dhrtaraspra. and Pandu. Both of them are well known in the world and are the best among the humans.

Out of them Pandu has two beautiful wives, resembling the apsaras. They are known by the names of Kunti and Madri.

The king Dhrtarastra has a single wife, who is known on earth by the name of Gandharl. She lives according to the wishes of her husband and follows the Pativrata dharma or is a woman devoted to her husband.

The sons of both the kings are going to wage a great war mutually. All of you should produce progeny, in favour or aginst either of them.

On the basis of the distribution of their ancestral kingdom, a great war is going to be fought, in which a large number kings and rulers will get destroyed. The great war would be terrific and destructive like the time of dissolution.

When the kings will arrive in the war with this armies and fighting with one another they would meet with their end. Under these circumstances the villages, cities and the kingdoms would be deserted and the earth would be on the decline.

By the end of Dvapara Yuga, the destruction which has to take place has been foreseen by me. At that point of time all the kings with their forces, would be destroyed with the use of weapons in the war.

Those of the rulers who would escape death from that great war, would be killed while asleep, by none else than. Asvathama- who incarnated on earth out of the arhsa of lord Siva. He would reduce them to ashes with the use of his weapon.

That destruction would be extremely cruel resembling the destruction of the time of dissolution and when it comes to an end, then I would say that the third Dvapara- Yuga has come to an end.

Then lord Krishna, the comlete form of lord Visnu, when proceeds to the abode of Vaikuntha, the last and the terrific Yuga of Kali would emerge, which would be terrific to look at.

At that point of time, the people usually would not be devoted to dharma. Only a few would follow the dharma. They would not be truthful and falsehood would prevail.

All the people shall take refuge with lord Rudra or Karttikeya. The number of the people reaching the old age, would be limited.

О gods, therefore, the decision to put an end to the rulers of the world would be quite appropriate. Therefore, all of you should incarnate on earth from your arhsas without further delay.

Such of the gods who patronise dharma should be asked to be born out of the wombs of KuntI and Madri. The Age of Kali is the cause of controversy and war. All of them with their associates should be born from the womb of Gandhari.

Inspired by Kala they should take refuge with anyone of the two sides and for grabbing the kingdoms of the earth with greed, all of them would be desirous of war.

The earth which houses the entire world, should revert to her original place. For the destruction of the rulers who are burden for her. For them adequate steps have been taken. The task has been taken in hand.”

Listening to the words of Brahma, the earth returned with Kala, as she had arrived.

Thereafter, Brahma, in order to subjugate the ante-gods Danavas inspired the gods. Then he inspired all the ancient Rishis, humans, Sesanaga — the carrier of earth, Sanatkumara, Sadhyas, Agni and other gods, Varuna, Yama, the sun, the moon, Gandharvas, apsaras, Rudra, Adityas and both the Asvinlkumdras to descend on earth and produce their own Varhsas. Thereafter the gods produced their own Ariisas on earth.

O king, I have narrated to you about the initial incarnation on earth according to which, for the killing of the Daityas and Danavas the gods incarnated on earth in sexual and non-sexual excercises.

Their bodies were well built like datepalm and strong like Vajra. Many of them possessed enormous prowess. They could bear the attack of clubs, Parighas, besides Saktis etc. Their arms were quite thick like Parighas.

All of them could attack with mountain peaks and were well versed in attacking with Parighas. Out of these gods, hundreds and thousands were born as kings and princes in Vrsni-Varhsa, Kuru-Varhsa and Pahcala-Vamsa. Many of the gods were born in the Brahmana races, performing the Yajhas.

They were well versed in the use of all the arms, besides being great archers, engaged in the performing of the Vedic vratas, possessing all the virtuous qualities, performers of Yajnas, and the noble deeds.

Getting annoyed, they could move the mountains, tear out the earth, could fly in the sky and could disturb the oceans as well.

Brahama — the lord of present, past and future, thus commanding the gods and entrusting the task of protection of the three worlds to lord Visnu, kept silent.

O Janmnejaya, Lord Visnu, who could provide benefit to all the living beings, for the benefit of the people, incarnated on earth, you listen from me.

In the the respectable race of Yayati, the intelligent Vasudeva was born, in whose race lord Nardyana who increased the glory of the race, was born.

Here ends Chapter 53 of Harivansa parva of the Harivamsa Purana, a khilabhaga of the epic of the Mahabharata, relating to the partial incarnation of gods on earth at the command of Brahma. (Vrs. 1 - 79, P.T. = 2913)
