The gods approach lord Visnu during his sleep





Vaishampayana spoke: О Janamejaya, Lord Visnu having been adored by the Rishis and the gods, entered his eternal abode of Vaikuntha, which is the place of rest for Narayana.

With the delightful mind, he took leave from Rishis who had collected in the place of Yajha. Then offering his salutation to Brama, he entered the Narayanasrama, which was known after his name. Soon after his entry into the asrama, lord Visnu discarded the weapons.

Thereafter his sleeping place (bed room) appeared like an ocean. The eternal gods and the Rishis lived there.

The proud gods of the time of dissolution were present there. The place was like the resplendent region surrounded by the constellations. Those who were entitled to visit the place, for them the divine region is filled with darkness and they cannot reach there. It is quite difficult even for the gods to reach there, then what to speak of the asuras or demons.

The wind, the rays of the sun and the moon cannot reach there. The divine country is illuminated with the resplendence of the eternal lord Padmanabha.

The lord who in earlier times was conceived as having the gigantic form with a thousand heads, the same lord, soon after his entering the region, carrying the burden of the deeds of the people over his head in the form of matted locks of hair, got ready to go to sleep there.

Then the black complexioned sleep which is the form of death of all and is well aware about the end of all, rests in the eyes of the lord.

Shri Hari, the foremost of the performers of Vratas, lay there in sleep over the bed of the oceanic as well as the cloudds water. After the entire world, having been submerged in water at the time of dissolution, the way in which the lord is said to enjoy the sleep, in the Puranas, similarly the lord enjoyed his sheep at that point of time.

The gods and the Rishis then started eulogising the all powerful Visnu, the great soul.

From the centre of the Lord’s navel, a lotus appeared, the lustre of which resembled the sun. It happened to be the seat of Brahma. The lotus had a thousand petals. Several Varnas in the form of seeds were studded in it. It was extremely soft and fully blown.

The raised hand of the lord represents the deeds of the earlier births of Brahma. He indicates for creation with this hand. Similarly lord Hari, indicates for creation with that hand, while in sleep. Thus the lords, keeps on the changing activities of the world during his sleep as well.

The air he inhales in his open mouth, the people getting inspiration from the same, get created in large number.

The auspicious living beings after having been born, get divided by Brahma into the four Varnas viz - Brahmanas, Ksatriyas, Vaisyas and Sudras. Thereafter the people of the four Varnas get engaged in their respective assignments according to the Vedas and finally attain the beautitude.

The form of lord Visnu, while sleeping under the influence of Yoganidra (yogic sleep) is unknown even to lord Brahma or the great Rishis of Brahmaloka.

Lord Brahma and other Brahmarsis are unaware of the true form of lord Visnu, who sleeps in at different time and the country and rises up in different time and country.

They remain ignorant of the fact as to who wakes up? or who sleeps? Who becoming omnipotent, remains inactive? Who is the lord? Who is immensely illustrious? Who is exteremly subtle?

The gods think about him by the divine means, but till now they have not been able to realise about the secrets of his birth and activities.

The lord with the use of the Vedic hymns, which represents his teachings or with those Vedic mantras or the stories has narrated about his performance. The same stories have been narrated by the ancient Rishis in the Puranas, highlighting his true form.

Even the gods listen to the performance of lord Visnu in the form of Mahapuranas and other literature. They are endless.

The sportive performance of the lord, as has been revealed, are inshrined in the Vedic and worldly literature.

At the time of the creation of the lokas, Lord Madhusiidana appears in his visible form and always remains alert for the killing of the Danavas.

After the eternal lord’s going to sleep, even the gods were unable to have a view of him. He sleeps there in the rainy season, (but he remains always alert for the destruction of the demons). He wakes up after the rainy season.

Acutally lord Visnu represents the Vedas, Yajnas besides the parts of the Yajnas. The goal one achieves after the performing of the yajnas, is lord Purusottama himself.

During the period of the sleep of the lord the Yajnas are not performed. When the lord Madhusiidana wakes up in the rainy season, the performing of the Vajpeyi and other Yajnas is started.

After the sleeping of Lord Visnu, Indra - the lord of gods, himself performs the Vaisnava activities including maintaining of the universe. He also makes the people to perform all the deeds relating to the water.

The black and deep illusion of tapas exists in the world in the form of tapas. It gets inimical to the living beings without any cause, is terrific in nature and acts as kalaratri for the kings engaged in was in the battle ground.

Night is the Tamasi body of that Maya, the form of which happens to be the darkness. It destroys the day and eats away half the life of the living beings in the form of sleep. She has a terrific form.

Having been influenced with the sleep in the form of Maya, a living beings starts yawming and like a man drawing in the vast ocean, becomes helpless, beings unable to tolerate its force.

A person who is sure to die, on earth, achieves this sleep due to food or after immense labour. Therefore this worldly sleep overpowers all the living beings of the world.

The beings on earth, having the bodies, are also overpowered with sleep, which automatically gets destroyed after sleeping of a person. But on the arrival of the time of death of the people, at that point of time its ends their lives with force.

Except Lord Narayana, none of the gods can overcome the sleep. This Maya, actually emerged out of the body of Lord Visnu, is the killer of all besides being the associate of the god of death — the kala.

The same Maya has been found lodged in the lotus like eyes of lord Visnu. It appears like a lotus eyed woman. It casts delusion over the entire world and devours the people in short time.

The sleep, the path of which is quite subtle is lodged by lord Hari in his eyes for the benefit of the people. As a husband serves a chaste wife, similarly a person desirous of rest, should go to sleep at times.

Thus the eternal Visnu, having been overpowered by Yoganidra, casting delusion over the entire world started sleeping in the Narayanasrama.

Narayana, the supreme soul slept there for thousands of years. The Satyayuga as well as the Treatayuga also passed.

At the end of Dvapara, finding all the people suffering variously, the immensely illustrious lord woke up at the prayers of the great fois.

Rsis spoke: — “As the flower garland, is discarded after its use, similarly you also wake up from the sleep. All the gods with Brahma are standing here to have an audience with you.

О Hrsikesa, These Mahrsis well versed in the Vedas, performing the excellent Vratas are felicetating you reciting the Vedic hymns.

О creator of the bhUtas, О lord Visnu, you listen to the auspicious words of the gods who represent the earth, water, fire, wind and the sky — the Pahca- Maha- bhiitas.

О lord, the seven sages together with their group with their divine voice are singing your praise in a natural way.”

О lotus eyed one, О illustrious Padmanabha, О preceptor of the gods, an exegency has arisen to wake you up from your sleep.

Vaishampayana spoke: О Janamejaya, then removing the entire water and removing the curtain of darkness, spread by Yogamaya, Lord Hrsikesa, displaying his excellent splendour, rose up from his sleep.

He found that all the gods with Brahma were present there. Their minds had been disturbed and they wanted to speak something. He also realised that they (the gods and the Rishis had collected there for the welfater of the universe.

He had already avaited of rest through his eyes, therefore lord Visnu addressed them with appropriate words which re­presented the Tattvas.

Lord Visnu said: О gods, with whom are you at war presently? Where from the danger has emerged for you? Or otherwise what is required by which one of the god? You tell me, what is there which is not possessed by me? (I shall give you every­thing).

In what type of the activity have the Danavas indulged which is painful for the people as well as the world at large? I intend to know about it at once.

In the presence of the Rishis well versed in Brahman, I am discarding the excellent bed. I am now standing getting attentive, for your welfare. You tell me, what should I do for you.

Here ends chapter — 50, of Harivansa Parva of the Harivarnsa Pur na, a khilabhaga of the epic of Mahabharata relating to the approaching by the gods to lord Visnu, when he was asleep. (Vrs. 1-48, P.T.= 2761)
