Meeting of the gods at Meru mountain and prayer of the earth for the removel of her burden





Vaisarhpayana spoke: О Janamejaya, the lord then said, “very well”, and then he started from that place together with other gods. His voice was as deep as the clouds of the rainy season. His body’s complexion resembled that of the cloud and the resplendence of the moon.

He had matted locks of hair over the head and his belly was adorned with garland of gems, which were shining like the moon. His body had the complexion of cloud. Lord Hari looked extremely graceful.

The hair appeared over his vast chest, while the Shrivatsa mark appeared in the centre of the chest.

He was clad in two yellow garments, was the preceptor of the entire universe. He was eternal Visnu, appeared like the evening sun or the mountain covered with clouds.

He was travelling seated over Garuda and following Brahma. All other gods were following him. His eyes were fixed on them only.

In a short while all the gods reached over the Meru mountain. Reaching there, they found the assembly of Brahma, which could take to any form at will.

The divine assembly was located over the peak of the Meru mountain and had the, lustre of the sun. It had the pillars of gold and its gates were studded with gems.

It was decorated with the astonishing types of paintings which were made by imagination. Several lines of planes lodged there. All of them had the windows of gems. The assembly which could take to anyform at will, was decorated with divine diamonds.

The precious stones were studded in it. It was decorated with the flowers of all the seasons. Its divine construction was carried out by Visvakarma himself. It possessed the Maya, of the gods.

All the gods as per command of Brahma, entered the assembly hall and took their respective seats.

All of them were adequately were seated over the Vimanas, (planes) asanas (seats), Bhadrasanas (special seats), pithas (pedestab), carpets and other seating arrangements.

Then at the command of lord Brahma, the wind god, who is capable of uprooting the huge tree got up and said, “All should keep quiet. No one should utter a word”. Thus speaking, he moved through the entire assembly.

When the entire community of the gods was quiet, then the goddess earth, spoke the compassionate words.

The Earth spoke: “O gods, I am sinking in the nether world. You kindly contain me, because the entire universe is based on your grace. You contain all the bhutas and also maintain them.

Whatever you contain with your strength, the same is borne by me by your grace, making all the efforts.

Whatever is borne by you the same is borne by me as well. The thing which is not borne by you cannot be borne by me. There is no bhuta which cannot be borne by you.

О Deva Narayana, in every yuga, you alone relieve me of my burden, for the benefit of the world.

О best of gods, having been terrified with Your resplendence, I have sunk into the netherworld and have arrived here to take refuge under your feet. You kindly protect me.

Feeling painful from the Danavas and the wicked Raksasas, I always take refuge with the eternal lord and shall do so in future as well.

I feel immensely frightened till I do not take refuge with you — the lord Parmesvara. I have witnessed this hundreds of times.

At the beginning of earlier period Brahma had established me over the surface of the water and holding my dust into his first he made two images of the two great demons.

Both of them, in earlier times had been born from the wax emerging out of the ears of Visnu who was sleeping in the great ocean and appeared motionless like the wood or the wall.

Then with the excellent inspiration of Brahma, the wind god, entered into the bodies of both the images, after which both the demons started expanding, covering the sky.

With the life infused in them by the wind god, Brahma, carried both of them into his lap and slowly moved his hand over their bodies. By so doing, the body of one of them apperared to him quite soft,while the other one appeared quite hard.

Then Brahma — born out of the water, gave the name of Madhu to the demon with soft body, while the other one with hard body was given the name of Kaitabha.

After the giving of the name, the immesely invincible Daityas, getting intoxicated with strength, desirous of war and started wandering in the oceanic water.

Finding them having arrived with the desire of war, Brahma, disappeared in the oceanic waters.

The four - faced Brahma, then appeared from the navel of Padmanabha Visnu and he liked himself to be seated over the lotus seat.

Both the lord Brahma and Visnu remaining in the water slept for many years and did not move at all.

Then after the expiry of the long period, both the brothers known by the names of Madhu and Kaitabha, reached the place of Brahma.

Then finding the invincible and terrible demons with gigantic bodies, Brahma, through the lotus stalk disturbed lord Visnu. Then the illustreous lord Visnu stood up from the bed.

When all the three of them met in the oceanic water, there started a great war, between the lord Visnu on the one side and the two Daityas on the other.

The terrific war between the lord and the Daityas continued for a thousand years, but both the asuras were never fatigued in the war.

By fighting in terrific war for a long time, the terrible demons were delighted at heart and then said to lord, Nardyana Hari.

«O Deva, we both the brothers are extremely pleased in fighting with you. We are desirous of graceful death. But we should be killed where the earth is not drowned in water.

О excellent god, getting killed at your hands, we shall have the feeling of being your sons. Because Brahma had ordained that whosoever kill us in the war, would be our father.

Listening to their words, lord Visnu, cought hold of both the Daityas in the battle field with his hands and pressed them. This resulted into the death of both Madhu and Kaitabha.

After their death, the dead bodies of both of them, when thrown in water, which were turned into one single body. Then the said body having been churned by the oceanic waves, issued marrow, which was spread in the water, while the water disappeared. Lord Nardyana then created a large number of living being seated over that place.

The entire earth was covered with the marrow of both the Daityas because of which the earth came to be known by name of Medani, which by the grace of lord Nardyana was turned as the base of the world.

In earlier times, lord Visnu, taking to the form of Vardha, the same lord Nardyana, in full view of the sage Markandeya, lifting me up over the tip of the tusk, rescued me out of the deep waters.

Then on the other day, lord Visnu, extending his one foot, in your presence, measuring the three worlds, snatched me from the hands of Bali.

Facing the misfortunes, I appear like an orphan. Therefore, I have arrieved here before Lord Jagannatha, who happens to be the protector of those who take refuge with Godadhara.

Fire is the preceptor of gold, SUrya (sun) is considered to be the preceptor of all the rays. Moon is considered to be the preceptor of the constellations, but my preceptor happens to be lord Narayana.

The mobile and immobile world is held by me while lord Gadddhara carries one with the entire universe which is carried by me.

It is he, who appearing in the form of Parasurama - the son of Jamadagni who had rid the earth of the Ksatriyas twenty one times, in anger.

I happen to be the same whom lord Parasurama had pleased with the blood of rulers in the battle Yajna and had given me away in charity to the saga Kasyapa, in the Sraddha of his father.

I had been soaked with the blood of the Ksatriyas. The bad smell (odor) of the blood, marrow, flesh and bones of Ksatriyas was spreading from the earth, in the same condition, like a woman in period, I appeared before the sage Kasyapa to serve him.

At that point of time Kasyapa had told me, “O Vasudha, what is the reason that you observing the Vrata of a wife of a valorous man, look so gloomy?”

At that point of time I informed Kasyapa - the father of the world, “O Brahman, Parasurama has killed my husband.

Holding of the weapons was the source of their livelihood. Having been deprived of the Ksatriyas, 1 have been widowed. All the cities are deprieved of the rulers. Therefore no enthusiasm has been left in me for remaining alive.

Therefore, you bestow such a valorous husband for me who would be valorous like you and is able to protect having been surrounded with the ocean.

The powerful lord Kasyapa on hearing my words, uttered, “very well”. Then he handed me over to the king Manu.

In this way I reached from Vaivasvata Manu to the I Ksavaku race. All the people of that race were rulers with that race, I kept on changing the suzerainty from one ruler to the other.

In this way my care was entrusted to the intelligent king Manu and thousands of powerful kings ruled over me.

Several of the powerful Ksatriyas, proceeded on to the heaven after conquering me. All of them due to move of destiny, were absorbed in me.

For my sake wars fought on my soil in which the warriors who never turned their backs in war, fought mutually and are even now fighting.

The world is controlled by the destiny which moves by you. Therefore, all of you for the welfare of the people, should do something that the rulers are killed in the battle ground.

In case the lord is compassionate on me, then the sole carrier of cakra should bestow fearlessness on me to relieve me of the burden.

I am suffering with burden and in search of relief, I have reached here to take refuge with lord Visnu. The same lord should assure me to relieve me of the burden.
