Subjugation of kalinaga - glory of Shri Krishna

Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, the energetic Krishna, reaching the bank of the river, tightened his Waistband. Then he delightfully climbled over the branch of the kadamba tree.

He had the complexion of a black cloud, had lotus like eyes, then hanging from the Branch of the kadamba tree, jumped into the kalidaha, which resulted into a thundering voice.

With the fall of Krishna into the water of the tank, a loud disturbance was created. He splashed the water with great force and it appeared as if a cloud had burst.

With the terrific sound so created (with the fall of Krishna) the palace of the serpent king was disturbed and his eyes were filled with rage.

The serpent was black like the cloud who got up enraged as his eyes became red with rage.

The serpent king had five hoods and he was emitting fire flames in his breath. His forked tongue was being brandished. His mouth was filled with fire flames. He had five terrific hoods.

With his fire like body which could destroy anything, he covered the entire tank and shaking in anger, looked as if he was burning with his own flames.

Burning with anger and with the fire of poison, the water tank of Kaliya, looked like boiling and the flow of the water of Yamuna, took to the reverse gear. It appeared, as if the river, getting afraid was fleeing backwards.

Finding Krishna sporting the water of the tank, Kaliya started exhaling fire flames while breathing. The smoke with flames emerged out of his hoods.

Displaying the fire of his anger, the serpents, like the time of dissolution, reduced to ashes the trees growing over the bank of the tank.

The wives of Nagaraja besides his sons, servents and other huge serpents who were immensely strong, emitting venum from their hoods mixed with smoke, pounced upon Shri Krishna.

Then all the serpents bound Krishna with their bodies, as a result of which the feet of Krishna became inactive. He stood there motionless like a mountain.

Thereafter all the serpents kings started biting Krishna with their fangs, but the powerful Krishna could not be killed.

In the meantime all the cowherd boys returned to Braj while crying and spoke in a choked voice with tears falling from their eyes.

The cowherds said, “Shri Krishna has fainted falling into the Kalidaha and the serpent king is eating him up. Therefore rush at once. Make no delay.

Some one should go and inform Nandagopa that the serpent king had dragged your son Krishna in the great tank.

On hearing this terrific news, like the fall of thunder bolt, Nandagopa, overpowered with grief, and getting upset, reached the vast tank while staggering.

He was accompanied by several children of Braj, old people and the young girls of Braj. In the mean time Samkarsana — the son of Rohini also arrived there. All of them reached the sporting place of Nagaraja in the water.

Nanda and all other cowherds were dropping tears from their eyes and were lamenting. All of them stood at the bank of the tank.

They felt shameful for their incapability. They felt surprised witnessing and hearing the conrage of Krishna. They were doubtful about the survival of Krishna. Some one uttered, “Alas! О son”, and then wept bitterly. Disgrace to all of us.” Thus speaking all of them were anxious.

The other people feeling painful uttered, “Alas! we are dead”. Thus uttering, they cried aloud. The women folks of Braj, looking at Yasoda uttered, “Alas! О Yasoda, you have met with untimely death, because you are finding your son presently in the hands of Nagaraja. Alas! he, having been bound with the serpents is being dragged like a dead person.

O Yasoda, surely, your heart is made of iron. Why does your breasts not burst out finding your son in such a condition?

Alas! we find that Nandagopa feeling extremely painful, has fixed his gaze at child Krishna’s face, who is with Kalinaga, and stands like an unconscious person.

All of us shall enter the abode of the serpents with Yasoda, but shall never return without child Krishna.

The day is of no consequence without the sun. The night is of no consequence without the moon. The cows are no consequence without bull. Similarly Braj is of no consequence without Krishna. Like the cows without the calves, we shall not return to Braj without Krishna.

Listening to the talk of the milkmaids the lamenting of Nandagopa as well as the other cowhuds, besides the pathetic cries of Yasoda, Samkarsana who had always been one with Krishna, who was like the two bodies with a single soul with Krishna spoke to eternal Krishna, getting enraged.

“O Shri Krishna, the delight of the cowherds, you subjugate the serpents king, who has the lonely weapon of the poison.

О excellent one, of lord, all our relatives think you to be a human being and as such are lamenting.”

Listening to the symbolic words of Samakarsana, the son of Rohini, Shri Krishna, at once broke the bondage of the serpents and displaying his strength, he patted his arms.

Then Shri Krishna, pressed the body of the serpent, which was Heating over the surface of the water, with his feet. Then he bending the hoods of the serpent king, caught hold of him.

Then suddenly, Krishna, with a swift jump climbed over the middle hood of the serpent king. Then he while standing over the hood started dancing over it. At that point of time, his arms were adorned with arm lets.

With the trampling of the hood by Shri Krishna, the serpent king was cooled down. The heat of his brain was wiped out. Then vomiting blood from all his mouths, he spoke with a Pathatic voice.

“O Krishna with a pleasent face, I displayed my anger before you out of ignorance. You have subjugated me. My entire poison has been destroyed Now I take refuge with you.

Therefore, you get me a command as to what should be done by me for your relatives. О otherwise, who should be my master? You kindly restore my life to me.”

When the Nagaraja, so bewod in reverance before Krishna lowering all his five hoods, Krishna, discarding anger, spoke to him thus.

“O snake, I shall not allow you to live here in the water of Yamuna. You better proceed with your wife and other relatives to the ocean.

In case I find any serpent in the Yamuna water hence forth, then he would be killed at my hands, irrespective of his being your son or other relative.

Let this water be cleaned and should benefit the people. Therefore, you should proceed to the great ocean. In case you stay here, I would earn the grave sin of killing you.

О serpent, Garuda, during your stay in the oceanic water, would not harm you finding my footprints embossed over all your five serpent hoods.

Then Kalinaga — the foremost of the serpents, bowed his heads at the feet of lord Krishna disappeared from the tank in full view of all these people standing at the bank.

When the serpent left the place, admitting his defeat and Krishna came out of the water and stood over the bank, then all the cowherds felt surprised and started praising him, while going round him.

All the cowherds who were the forest dwellers, then delightfully spoke to Nandagopa, “O chief of the cowherds, you are indeed graceful. The lord is immensely compassionate on you since he has bestowed such a virtuous son to you.

О sinless Nanda, from today onwards, Shri Krishna alone is the only refuge and protector for the cows and the cowhuds here.

The water of the Yamuna, which is served by all the ascetics, has become beneficial and comfortable for all. Now our cows can always graze over its bank.

We the forest dwellers are the primitive people and this is clearly evident, because Krishna the great soul is present over the land of Braj, like the fire concealed in the ashes. But all of us are unable to understand his importance.”

Thus all the cowhuds felt surprised, and praising Shri Krishna, went back to their abodes of the cowherds as if the gods move in the Caitraratha forest.

Here ends chapter — 12, of Visnu Parva of the Hanvatiisa Purana, a khilabhaga of the epic of the Mahabharata, relating to the subjugation of Kalinaga, and glory of Shri Krishna. (Vrs. 1-49, P.T. = 3569)’
