Narada’s prayer to Visnu to incarnate on earth

Vaishampayana spoke: О Janamejaya, when the earth and Kala, both getting beholden, left the place, and the task of the gods’ taking birth on earth as partial incarnations, was over, then Dharma, Indra, Vayu, Asvinikumara — the divine physician and the sun god, incarnated on earth separately, but Brhaspati, the priest of the gods arrived on earth ahead of them. The eighth Vasu had already incarnated on earth in the form of Bhishma. The god of death and the arhsa of Kali also had arrived on earth. Sukra, Soma (moon) and Varuna also incarnated partially on earth. Lord Siva, Mitra, Varuna, Kubera, Gandharvas and Yaksas also appeared on earth partially. When all of them appeared partially on earth, then Narada, the divine saint, who always sided with the gods, seemed approaching Narayana.

At that point of time his illustrious body looked like the burning fire flames. Both his eyes were red like the sun of the time of day break. He had the matted locks of hair, which were arranged anti-clock wise.

He was clad in two costumes which were white like the moon rays. He was adorned with the ornaments of gold. He carried in his hands a Veena known as Mahatl, which looked as his associate under his arms.

The dear skin served as an upper garmet to him hanging over his shoulder. He was adorned with a golden sacred-thread. He held a danda and a kamandalu in his hands. He looked as a second Indra in appearance.

Narada-could reveal the secrets of the world or he could reveal the controversies, like the planets. He was the reciter of all the four Vedas and the chief sacrificial priest as well as the reciter of the Samaveda. Inspite of his being a great Rishi, he was well-versed in music as well.

To creat quarrel among others was a sport or pass-time with him. Inspite of his being a Brahmana and son of Brahma, he was treated as a substitute of Kali. Narada — the great sage, was the foremost preacher of Devaloka as well as the Gandharva loka.

The eternal Narada who wandered in the Brahmaloka, at that point of time standing in the assembly of gods, getting enraged spoke to lord Visnu.

«O omnipresent Narayana, the partial incarnation of the gods on earth for the destruction of the kings is of no consequence.

О omnipresent Parmesvara, the war of the rulers of the world, depends on you alone. It appears to me that the success of the aim of the gods rests in coopration of Nara as well as Narayana both.

О god of gods, you possess the intuition and are well aware of everything, therefore in order to relieve the earth of her burden, make use of such a method, in which you both are not involved, it would not be proper for you.

Because, you are the sight of the sightless people, lord of the influential people, are the supreme Yogi, of those practicing the Yoga, besides being the movemet of all the mobile beings.

You happen to be Paramesvara — the refuge of all, then with the dropping of the arhsas of gods on earth, then why dont you make your amsa also to discent on earth, for the welfare of the earth.

The amshas of the gods are your own form and are depending on you alone. Deriving the inspiration from you, remaining engaged in one or the other activity can roam about on earth.

О Visnu, I have anxiously arrived in the assembly of gods in order to inspire you and there is a reason behind it, which you please listen.

All the Daityas who had been killed by you in Tarakamaya war, have reached the earth. You listen to their present condition.

There is a well known city of Mathura on earth, which is extremely blissful. The prosperous city is located over the bank of the river Yamuna. It is surrounded by several janapadas.

In earlier times an immensely strong Danava named Madhu lived there and was invincible in war. He terrorised all the living beings and possessed enormous strength.

He had a vast forest known by the name of Madhuvana there. It had several green trees. The Danava lived in Madhuvana in earlier times.

He had a son named Lavana who also was a great DanavcP He also terrified all the living beings and possessed great powers.

The said Danava sported there for many years. Then, he, getting intoxicated with his prowess and pride, started destroying all the gods as well the lokas.

In ancient times, there was a city named Ayodhya which was invincible. It was ruled by Raghunatha, who frightened the demons. At that point of time, Lavana, feeling proud of his strength, taking shelter in Madhuvana ^sent a foul tongued messenger to Shri Rama.

(The messenger told Shri Rama, “O Rama, I live close to your kingdom and also happen to be your enemy. Therefore the kings do not allow to live such a Samanta (neighbouring king) who is arrogant with force.

A king performing the appropriate royal Vrata should, for the welfare of his kingdom and for the benefit of the populace, should overpower all his foes.

It is essential for the one who has been crowned as the king and who is desirous of keeping the people happy, that he should first over power his sense organs, because it is after so doing, he would be able to conquer his enemies.

For those who expect the behaviour, such people and particularly the rulers of earth, there is no better advise than the people themselves.

The one who keeps himself away from gambling and hunting or other evil deeds, or the one who keeps himself away from the evil deeds, who is evenly devoted to dharma, but who excells others in prowess, such an intelligent ruler is never afraid of his neighbouring kings.

When the enemies like the sense organs grow with the body, then they create confusion and at times act in a way which is liked by the enemy. Under these conditions, the impatient people or the kings, find the obstructions created for them.

You, out of confusion, have killed Ravana for the sake of a woman, I do not consider it justified. Though it is great deed from the point of view of the prowess, but still it is deplorable.

You had been awarded exile (by your father). It had been graceful for you to observe the rules of the recluses living in the forest. Still you attacked the demonic forces. Such behaviour by the noble people is unheard of or unseen.

Discarding the anger, the dharma, which is followed by the noble people, it leads them to the noble path. The Raksas killed by you out of confusion, have brought bad name to the dwellers of the hermitages, (your conduct shall be followed by others. Therefore you have set an evil example).

Graceful was Ravana, who was killed at your hands in the battle. You had been observing the gramya-dharma and the Vratas. (But you killed Ravana for the sake of a woman).

In case you have killed Havana having evil mind, who had no control over his senses and by so doing you consider yourself to be valorous, then you come on and fight with me in the battle field.”

Listening to harsh speech of the evil tongued messenger, Lord Rama, because of his natural patient nature, remained undisturbed and said.

“O messenger, whatever has been spoken by you because of devotion for the demon, it is quite frivolous. Because you find fault with me and you consider yourself to be following the righteous path.

In case I had lost my wisdom by following the righteous path, or in case my wife had been kidnapped, then why are you crying for the same.

The noble people following the righteous path, do not earn blemish, simply by words of others. Actually the lord, living in the bodies of the people, is witness to the truth and falsehood in a person. (He knows well, who is right and who is wrong).

“O messenger, a job that is required to be performed by a messenger like you has been performed by you. Therefor, you leave this place without delay. A person like me does not attack the person like you who indulges himself in his false praise.

Satrughna is my younger brother, who causes pain to his enemies. He will provide a befitting reply to evil minded Daitya in the battlefield.”

With these words, Shri Rama of the race of Raghu, then asked the messenger to return. Therefore, the messenger, accompanied with Satrughna, left Ayodhya.

Satrughna, the son of Sumitra, driving the challot with speed, reached the vast city of Lavanasura. With the desire of waging of war, he camped close to the forest (Madhuvana).

Thereafter, learning everything from the messenger, the Daitya was overpowered with anger and crossing the forest he stood before Satrughna, for waging the war.

Both Satrughna, the son of Sumitra and Lavanasura were exceedingly valurous. Both of them fought a terrific war in the battleground.

They started shooting sharp arrows at each other. Both of them did not stop fighting, nor did they feel fatigued.

Then Satrughna — the son of Sumitra wounded badly Lavanasura in the battleground, as a result of which his trident fell on the ground and he became weak.

Then he lifted up a goad in the battlefield, which he had received from the gods as a boon. With that goad he started thundering aloud. The goad could attract all the living beings.

He entangled the goad in the neck of Satrughna, the younger brother of Rama and pulling it he started moving the same.

Finding this, Satrughna, picked the sword with grip of gold and cut off the head of the demon with that sword, which fell down on the ground.

Then Satrughna the religeous minded son of Sumitra cutting the forest for the upliftment of the country, thought of establishing a city there.

Then Satrughna, who was loveable to his friend, killing the Danava in the battleground, destroyed the forest also with weapons.

Killing the Danava in the battlefield, Satrughna, then built a city at the site of Madhuvana, which came to be known as Mathura.

The city of Mathura is quite vast. It has high mansuns, boundary wall, and the gates to them have been provided at suitable places. The prosperous city is crowded with the people of the kingdom, besides the armymen as well as the travellers.

Several types of gardens and orchards add to its beauty. It has the beautiful boundary. It has been well populated and has been based on solid ground. (The city looks like a damsel). The boundary walls decarated with garments (Saree). The moat has been dug around the city which looks like a waist-band.

The city gates and the high mansions serve as her armlets, the excellent places are like the earrings. The main gate is covered with doors like the veil drawn over the face. The inner openings resembles her smile.

The healthy valorous people reside in the city of Mathura. It has enough of elephants, horses, chariots as well as the other vehicles. It is located over the bank of the river Yamuna which appears like the crescent.

The beautiful and the auspicious shops are found in the city, it is difficult for others to enter them. It is proud of the collection of gems in the same, The fields of its surrounding janapadas, are filled plants with enough of cereals growing in them. The god Parjanya, drips timely rains there.

The city of Mathura having enough of sources of enjoyments, delights the men and women there, which illumines. In this region as well as the city the king Surasena once lived there.

The Same city is presendty ruled by the king Ugrasena, who carries the burden of Bhoja dynasty. His prowess can be equated with Kumara Karttikeya.

О Visnu, you had killed the great Daitya Kalanemi in the Tarakamaya war. The same Daitya has presently incarnated on the earth as the son of the king Ugrasena.

He is known by the name of Kamsa, having vast eyes. He expands the Boja dynasty. His performance resembles a lion. The king Kamsa is well known on earth.

He is quite terrific for the rulers. He has become doubtful for other rulers. Kamsa terrorises all the living beings and has fallen from the path of righteousness.

He, with his terrific and cruel nature, has presently been intoxicated, because of his arrogance of the earlier birth. He has now become a horror for the people.

He is neither following the Rajadharma (royal ethics) nor does he please the people of his own side. He is also not quite popular in his own country. He is always filled with rage and does no good to anyone in his kingdom. He is only interested presently in collecting taxes from the people.

The one who had been defeated by you in war, the same Daitya Kalanemi has incarnated now on earth as Kamsa. His temperament is overpowered with demonic ways, by which the demon king causes pain to the people.

In earlier times, the Daitya named Hayagriva, who galloped like the horse, the same has appeared in the form of a horse known by the name of Kesi, on earth. It appears as if KesI is the younger brother of Kamsa.

The said Daitya named kesi is past master neighing. It has long mane over its neck. He is self willed and impertinent and lives on human flesh alone. He lives in Vrndavana alone.

On the other hand Arista, the son of Bali, with strong hump, appears in the form of a bull. He can take to any form at will and has become the enemy of the cows.

The demon named Rista, the son of Diti who is the best of the Daityas, appears in the form of an elephant, is serving as a vehicle of Kamsa.

The arrogant Daitya known by the name of Lamba, has been born on earth as Pralamba and is living in the Bhandlra forest.

The Daitya known as Khara in earlier times has presently been born as Dhenuka. The terrific demon destroys the people living in the Talvana.

The two powerful Danavas named Varaha and Kisora, have been born on earth as Caniira and Mustika. Both of them are the prominent wrestlers of the wrestling ground of Kamsa.

O Narayana, the killer of the well known Danavas Tara and Maya, presently live in the city of Progjyotispur, ruled by Narkama.

О Visnu, these Daityas, were defeated and killed at your hands, earlier. All of them, taking to human form are troubling the people on earth.

All of them are jealous of listening to your stories and kill to the people who are devoted to you. These demons could be killed only by your grace.

Whether they live in the sky or the nether world, they are always afraid of you. They feel panicky of you living in midocean, even on earth, they are afriad of you and none else.

О Shridhara, the one who is killed at your hands, and not at the hands of others, he inspite of being quite wicked, achieves you ultimately. But the one who was killed by others same demon, after his fall from heaven, is reborn on earth.

О Kesava, till such time you are conscious, about Yama’s driving the sinners in the hell, till such time, the one who is killed at the hands of others on earth, the heaven is out of bounds for him. (Then what to speak of achieving you). Therefore you kindly bestow the salvation to the Daityas, after killing them. For this purpose you have to incarnate on earth).

Therefore, О lord Visnu, you better arrive (on earth) yourself for the destruction of the Danavas.

You have several forms, which are not visible. Only the best of the gods can visualise only some of your forms, while others are unable to do so. The gods created by you shall appear on earth in the same forms.

О Visnu, after your incarnating on earth, alone, Kamsa would be destroyed and the earth has arrived here for the same purpose. The entire task can be accomplished.

О Hrsikesa, you have to perform a huge task in Bharatavarsa. You are the vision of everyone, (or lead everyone towards the noble path.) You are the rufuge of everyone. Therefore you arrive on earth for the destruction of the Danavas.

Here ends chapter — 54, of the Harivansa Parva of the Harivamsa Purana — a khilabhaga of the epic of Mahabharata, relating to Narada’s prayer to Visnu to incarnate on earth. (Vrs. 1-86, P.T. = 2999)
