Description of Bhandlra Vata Yamuna and Kalidaha

Vai£ampayana said: “One day Shri Krishna who could take to any form at will, without his brother Samkarsna went to the pleasent Vrndavana with cowherds and started roaming about.

He had long tuft of hair falling behind his head. He had vast eyes resembling the lotus flowers. He had the dark complexion, and the Shrivats — mark adorned his chest. He had the face with the lustre of moon rays.

The foreparts of his fingers resembled the blossomed lotus flowers. His feet adorned with anklets, and were quite soft. His walking resembled the walking of Vamana.

His costume or Pitambara was of yellow colour like the lotus, saffron and fine. Wearing it, Krishna appeared like the cloud of the evening time.

His arms were well rounded and adored by the gods, were active in binding the calves.

In the tender age of childhood, his face with beautiful lips and bearing the fragrance of his own was spreading his astonishing beauty.

His face was covered with the falling locks of hair as if the black wasps were looking over the lotus flower.

A garland of Kadamba and Arjuna flowers decorated his head, which also had the flowers of nlpa trees and the fresh shoots. It was spreading its lustre in the sky like the stars.

The similar type of garland odomed his neck as well. Because of which valorous Ghanaiyama appeared like the blue lustre of the clouds in the month of Bhadrapada.

A peacock feather was hanging from his neck, which was shaking with the blowing of the wind slowly. The peacock feather was adding to the beauty of his limbs.

Sometimes he sang in the forest, sometimes he played there, sometimes he roamed about and at times he played with the tree leaves using them as whistles.

At times, he taking to the form of a young boy delighted the cows playing on sweet flute, which was the prominent musical instrument for the cowherds.

He had the complexion of a fresh cloud, the beaming Krishna roamed about around Gokula, besides the astonishing and beautiful forest range.

The cries of the peacock echoed there. The forest ranges enhanced the passions of the passionate people. Thundering sounds were echoed in the sky with thundering of the clouds.

The paths of the forest were covered with grass. The mushrooms grown in abundance appeared like the ornaments of the place. Fresh shoots were growing and fresh water drops (juice) were oozing out of them.

The forest ranges, were having deep sighs, like the intoxicated fragrance of the fresh saffron plants, daily.

With the fresh air emerging out of the cluster of trees, Shri Krishna started enjoying the beautiful forest ornaments.

Once, while roaming about with the cows, Shri Krishna, came across a huge tree which was quite tall and was the tallest from all the trees in the forest.

With the collection of a large number of leaves on its branches, it was quite thick and appeared like a huge cloud. With its height, it had obstructed half of the sky, It had taken to the form of a high mountain.

The tree was served by a large number of peacocks of blue and spotted colours. With its large number of fruits resembling coral, it appeared like the cloud adorned with the rainbows.

Each one of its branch appeared like a vast mansion. It was fully blossoming with flowers and was laden with fruits. Its long roots were spreading in the vast area. It carried the wind and the clouds over it.

It appeared, as if the said tree was the lord of all the trees in the forest. Its activities were quite auspicious. It remained unaffected with sunshine and the rain.

It was a banyan tree and looked like the mountain peak and was known by the name of Bhdndira. Looking at it, Shri Krishna thought of staying under it.

O sinless Janamejaya, Shri Krishna stayed under the shade of that tree for die whole day, with other cowherds and while so doing he had the same comfort which he had while living in his own abode.

While enjoy the sports there, the other cowherd boys, started pleasing Krishna by offering to him the wild toys.

The other cowboys were feeling mentally delighted singing various songs. Rest of the cowherds who felt attracted towards the lovely sports of Krishna, or those who were otherwise attracted to Krishna, started singing the glory of Krishna.

When the cowherds were so singing, then Shri Krishna played on flute or others musical instruments made of tree leaves, besides a harp.

Krishna having the vast eyes like, those of the cows or the bulls, once, while grazing his cows, reached the bank of Yamuna, where the creepers entwined each and every tree.

The river, with its ever moving waves, resembling the curved eyebrows, and the wind was blowing touching its water, in which the white and blue lotus flowers had been blossoming. The river Yamuna was the thus seen by Krishna.

There were beautiful paths to enter the river. Its water was quite delicious. There were several kundas in the river and it was flowering with great speed. With the force of wind and water, the trees on the river bank had been bent down.

The sound of the swans and ducks, besides those of the cranes, the tumult was always created. The rudybirds and other birds enjoyed the matting sports over the river bank.

The aquatic animals (like fish etc.) were found in abundance in the river Yamuna. The flowers like lotuses and others added further grace to the river Yamuna. Because of the aquatic plants (or watery growth) the water looked green.

The spreading streams served as the feet, both the banks served as the buttocks, the high whirlpool were the navel and the lotuses were serving as the hair.

The flow of water was slow near the banks, which looked like their waist. She looked beautiful with its pleasent glory. She had the three lines (over the belly) in the form of her waves. The water foam was her smile. She always remained smiling and the swans represented her smile.

The beautiful red flowers represented her smile. The downward flow of the water was her lowered eyebrows. The blue lotuses were her eyes, the kunda in water stood for her forehead, and the aquatic grass was her hair.

The pair of ruddy gose represented her breasts. Her vast and charming face was spread over the two banks. The long streams were like her branches and the completeness of the two banks stood for her ears.

She appeared as wearing the ear rings of ducks. Her eyes in the form of blue lotuses, were quite charming. The trees growing over the banks were the ornaments worn by her. The lines of fish served her as her waist band. The vast expanse of water in the river, served as her garment. The sweet notes of the cranes resembled the gingling sound of her anklets. She was clad in beautiful spotless water costumes of reed flowers, which was golden like the feathers of swans.

The large crocodiles appeared like the posting of the sandal pasted over her forehead. She had the symbols of tortoise on her limbs. The carnivorus animals arriving on her banks looked like the flowers decorating her head. The humans arriving there at the river banks looked like sucking (milk) from her breasts.

The wild animals had polluted the Yamuna water by drinking it. There were a large number of hermitages of the saints over the banks of the Yamuna. Such a type of the chief queen of the ocean, looked quite beautiful, and enjoying her beauty, was moving around there with his companions.

Yamuna — the foremost of the rivers and Krishna, roaming about over its bank, suddenly spotted a pond in the water which was quite large and spread into an area of a Yajna. It was difficult for the gods even to cross it. It was quite deep and was filled with undisturbed water. There was no disturbance in it like the peaceful ocean.

The wild aquatic animals like the crocodiles etc, had also discarded it and with the water filled in it, it appeared like the sky overcast with clouds. There were no aquatic birds in that kunda.

There were a large number of snake holes, which served as the dwelling places of the serpents. Because of these snake holes it was extremely difficult for anyone to reach the kunda (tank). With the fire wood like smoke and fire of the snake venum, covered the entire tank.

Because of this, it was no more useful for the animals to drink water from the same. The water of that part of Yamuna, had become unfit for drinking of the animals. Even the gods, who took bath thrice in a day had discarded that place. The said tank was beyond the use of the gods even.

Even the birds could not fly over that tank. With its flames caught fire poison even when a small straw fell into it.

The land in the area of a Yajna around, it was beyond the reach of the gods even. With the wide spread venomous fire around the tank, flames were raised quite high, which had burnt to ashes the trees of the area.

In the north of Braj, there had been a land spreading to a kosa in length, which had escaped the fury of the poisonous fire and was free from ailments. The vast and deep tank, was illumining with its own lustre, was spotted by Shri Krishna, who mentally thought, “whose tank is this?”

The horrible Nagaraja — the king of serpents, which was as black as the collyrium, lives in this tank, who, according to my memory, fled away because of terror of Garuda — the consumer of the serpents, had left the ocean and arrived here to save his life, deserting his abode.

It is the Nagaraja who has polluted the water of Yamuna with his venum. Because of the terror of Nagaraja no one has the conrage to reach this place.

Because of this, the forest with tall grass has become horrible. Several species types of trees and creepers besidesthe wild growth, has made this forest as awful. The trustworthy guards of Nagaraja are guarding the forest and the adjecent land.

The forest has lost its support like on sky. It’s touch even is painful like the food mixed with poison. The forest is well gurarded by the guards of Nagaraja.

Both the banks of the tank are filled with the wild grass, reeds, lotus and small creepers, besides the trees. I shall have to prepare a path to reach there.

With this end in view, I have to overpower the serpent, and turn the river water which should be beneficial to the people.

With the subjugation of this serpent king, the entire land of Braj would became useful for the people. It would then be possible for the people to roam about in the forest with comfort. Besides the river would become the abode of all the pleasure and comforts besides becoming the best of all the holy places.

I have started dwelling in Braj because of this reason alone, incarnating in the form of a cowherd. By subjugating the evil people travelling over the wrong path, I have incarnated on earth.

In my child like sport, I shall climbs this kadamba tree and jump into th0e terrific tank and subjugate kalinaga.

By so doing, the glory of the strength of my arms would be spread in the world.
