Brahma’s advice to Visnu for incarnating on earth





Vaishampayana spoke: O Janamejaya, the only lord who is adorable by a person desirous of enjoying pleasure and moksa, is Visnu also known as Hari and Madhusudana. The same lord listening to the words of Narada and replied with his pleasent speech.

He said, «O Narada, whatever has been spoken by you for the welfare of the three worlds, inspires for the best intentions. Now you listen my reply to the same.

I am well aware of the fact that the Danavas have incarnated on earth in human form. I am also aware of the fact that which one of the Danava holding which form is preserving enmity in his heart.

I am also aware of the fact that Kalanemi has incarnated on earth as the Kamsa, the son of Ugrasena. I am also not unaware of the Daitya Kesi who has taken to the form of a horse.

The elephant named Kuva/yapldha, Canura and Mustika — the wrestlers are also well known to me. I also know pretty well the demon. Arista moving in the form of a bull.

O best of Brahmanas, the demons Khara and Pralamba are also not unknown to me. I am also aware of Piitana the daughter of the king Bali.

I also know Kdlinaga who resides in a kunda in Yamuna, getting afraid of Garuda.

I am also well known to Jarasandha, who is the foremost of all the rulers, presently.

I also know Vanasura pretty well, who is living in human form on earth, whose lustre resembles that of Kumara Kdrttikeya, lives in Sonitapura and is invincible from the gods because of his thousand arms. He is proud of his powers and is well known to me. I am also aware of the fact that the burden of the vast armies on earth have to be removed by me alone.

I am well aware of all the fact the way the kings would fight among themselves on earth? Then how would the rulers on earth in human bodies be welcomed in the heaven in Indraloka. All these happenings are visible before my eyes.

I am well aware of all the happenings and reaching on earth I in human form, shall make all the efforts and inspire others to do so.

The manner by which Kamsa and other Daityas would be killed, I shall kill them in the same manner.

By means of the Yogic practices, I shall enter their bodies, I shall destroy their secret movements and by so doing, I shall destroy the enemies of the rulers in the battle field.

О Narada, for the welfare of the earth, the ariisas of jRsis, Gandharvas and gods - the dwellers of the heaven, have reached the earth, with my consent. Because I had already decided accordingly.

О Brahman, now Brahma shall arrange for my stay on earth. О Pitamaha, now you tell me, in which country, should I appear and in which form, in order to kill the Asuras?

Brahma replied О omniscient lord, you listen from me the method to be used for the purpose, and the task would be established. О long armed one, your parents on earth would belong to the Yadava Varhsa. Having been born in that dynasty, you would expland the race of (Yadavas. Thereafter, you would be fixing the human limitations of Dharma, which I am going to speak out to you.

О Visnu, in earlier times, the Maharsi Казуара, at the time of his great Yajna, took on loan some milching cows from Varuna, which were useful during the performing of Yajna.

After the completion of the Yajna, both the wives of Kasyapa known as Aditi and Surabhi, did not intend to return the cows to Varuna.

Then Varuna came to me and bowing his head in reverance, said to me,»O lord, Kasyapa has kept my cows with him.

Inspite of the fact that the purpose for which the cows had been brought, was over, still the Guru does not allow the cows to be returned to me and while doing so he has followed the desire of his two wives Adit! and Surabhi.

О lord those cows of mine are divine, everlasting and Kamadhenu (fulling the desire). They are well guarded with their own tejas roam in the oceans.

О Deva, both of them yield nectar like milk in an uninterrupted manner. Who else, except my own father Kasyapa can withhold those cows?

О Brahman, inspite of anyone, being immensely powerful or is a preceptor, or anyone else in case he crosses the limits, then you alone can exercise your control over him because, you happen to be the sole refuge of all of us.

О Preceptor of the world, in case there be no provision for panishment for a strong person, who is unmindful of his duties, then all the limitations of the world would be shattered.

What would be the result of this action? Only you would be competent enough to make him perform his duty, being the lord. You kindly get me back my cows, only then I shall go back in the ocean.

The supreme soul is the lord of these cows and they represent the everlasting form of Sattvaguna. Whatever lokas have emerged out of you, in their view, the cows and the Brahmanas, are equal.

Initially the cows should be protected, then the cows when so fully guarded protect the Brahmanas. When both cows and the Brahmanas are protected, the entire world is well guarded.

О infallible one, at these words of Varuna, the lord of waters, then well aware of the related tattva, he pronounced a curse on Kasyapa.

“The amsha by which Maharsl Kasyapa, has usurped the cows, he would be born as a cowherd from the same arhsa.

The goddess named Surabhi and Aditi, who can produce fire (like fire out of fire sticks), both of them shall accompany Kasyapa on earth.

Then Kasyapa having been born among the cowherd, shall comfortably live with his two wives on earth. The other arhsa of Kasyapa who is as illustrious as Kasyapa himself, he would be known on earth by the name of Vasudeva and would live on earth as lord of the cows as well as the cowherds.

There is a mountain named Govardhana located at a little distance from Mathura, where he would be engaged in the protection of the cows, paying taxes to Karhsa. Both the wives of Kasyapa, shall be the wives of Vasudeva known by the names of Devaki and Rohini of them, Surabhl would be known by the name of Rohini and Aditi would be known as Devaki.

О longarmed one, you will remain with them in the form of child offeciating as a cowherd boy, would grow up gradually in the same way as you had done in the incarnation of Visnu, by initially becoming a dwarf and then expanding yourself you displayed your virata form.

О MadhusUdana, expanding your form with assistance of Yogmaya, you incarnate there for the welfare of the people.

The gods securing the blessing of victoiy, are desirous of your well being. You therefore descend yourself on earth and taking to two forms, grace the womb of Devaki and Rohini — the mothers, pleasing them at the same time.

О Visnu, while protecting the cows there, you would be wandering about in the forest. All these who would have an audience with you in the form of a cowherd decorated with the garland of forest flowers, would be quite graceful.

О long armed one, having the eyes like the blossoming lotus flowers, you omniscent Paramesvara, while living in Braja as a cowhud, all the people would enjoy your childhood sports.

О lotus eyed one, your devotees, who move as per your wishes, turning themselves as the cowherds, would appear there and would always keep your company.

When you would be gazing the cows in the forest, or would be moving here and there in Braja or sporting in the auspicious water of the Yamuna, on these occasions, these cowherd devotees, would get more and more devoted towards you.

The life of Vasudeva, would indeed be an excellent one, when you would address him tata (the excellent one), and he would address you as the son.

О Visnu, or otherwise whose son would you be except Kasyapa? О who else would be the woman to bear you in the womb, except Aditi.

О MadhusUdana, with your natural strength of yoga, in order to be,victorious over the asuras, you start from here and we are also retiring to our abodes.

Vaishampayana said - О Janamejaya, lord Visnu, seated over the auspicious place of the gods, got permission of the gods to incarnate on earth, went to his dwelling place located to the north of ocean of the milk.

There is a famous Parvati cave over the Meru mountain, which is inaccessible. The three feet of Visnu are embossed there, which are adored on the festive occassions.

Lord Hari, possessing bountiful wisdom, established his earlier body there itself and he devoted himself to the task of incarnating in the abode of Vasudeva.

Here ends Chapter — 55 of die Harivamia Parva of the Harivamsa Purana, a khilabhaga of the relating to Brahama’s advice to Visnu for incarnating on earth. (Vrs. 1-52, P.T.=3051).
