Indra enraged at the threat of the attack with club by Shri Krishna and his refusal to part with Parijat a tree without war

Vaishampayana said — On hearing the words of Indra, Narada — the foremost among the people well - versed in dharma spoke to Indra.

O longarmed one, О killer of Bala, I have a great respect for you in my mind. Therefore I must speak out something which is of benefit to you.

I was well aware of your thoughts, because you did not part with the Parijata tree, even when it was demanded by lord Siva. Therefore I had spoken to Shri Krishna on you behalf.

Whatever reasons have been put forth by you against the demand of Parijata, I had also explined them to him in brief, but Shri Krishna did not accept them. I am speaking out the truth to you.

In reply to my this talk lotus eyed Shri Krishna, said, “I am Upendra (the younger brother of Indra). Therefore Mahendra, should always be affectionate to me.

О lord, destroyer of Vrtrasura, I repeatedly apprised him of the various reasons, but I could not change his mind.

О Indra, at the conclusion of my talk with him MadhusUdana was enraged somewhat and replied.

“О sage, let you meet with welfare. In case all the gods, Gandharvas, Raksasas, asuras, Yaksas, and Nagas so desire, then all of them collectively can not shatter my grace and my vow.

In case, Amaresvara, Indra inspite of your speaking to him, declines to part with the Parijata tree, then I shall strike over his chest, the sandal paste of which is removed by the embrace of Sad, with my club.

О Mahendra, this is the final decision of Upendra - your younger brother. Now you think over the matter and act accordingly.

О Devesvara, I shall tell you that in principal, you listen to me the words of tattva, which would be beneficial to you. To me it appears, that it would be proper to cany Parijata to Dvdraka.”

О Naresvara, at these frank words of Narada, then Indra — the destroyer of Balasura, possessing a thousand eyes, uttered in rage.

О best of ascetics, in case Shri Krishna is bent up behaving- with his elder brother in such an improper manner then what could be done?

О Narada, Krishna, had already acted against me in a number of cases. But I ignored them taking him to be my younger brother.

In earlier times, he was driving the chariot of Arjuna, in the forest of Khandava. At that point of time when the entire forest was in flames, I poured rain to extinguish the fire. He shattered all my clouds at that time.

Similarly, he, by lifting the Govardhana mountain, acted in a manner which was agonised me. At the time of the killing of Vrtrasura, I had requested for his help, but he bluntly refused my request that he was the same for all the living beings. (I have no enmity with anyone.) Then I had to kill Vrtrasura on my own strength.

О sage Narada, whenever the time of the war between the gods and the asuras arrive, Visnu fights of his own accord. This is quite well knwon to you.

What is the use of talking much on the subject. In case by the move of destiny, the war has to be fought, then О Narada, you are witness from my side, that I do not desire to pick up a fight with my brother.

In case Kesava is bent upon striking my chest with his club, then what is the use of mentioning the name of Sacl here.

My intellegent father accompanied with my mother had gone to the ocean of milk for living in water both of them could speak to me like that (because the parents have the right to punish the child).

But my brother Shri Krishna is an infallible soul. He cannot control his mind. Besides he has been surrounded by rajoguna and tamoguna. Therefore out of passion of lust, at the instance of his wife, he has spoken thus to his preceptor.

О excellent Brahmana, disgrace to the ladies totally and also to the royal assembly, in which, I was blamed just for the sake of a woman.

О great sage, in the family of Kasyapa, no blemished activity could be noticed. The family of Daksa in which my mother was born, nothing of the sort has bfeen found.

Shri Krishna under the influence of attraction and lust, has neither honoured my superiority nor of my position as the lord of gods had been honoured.

O sinless Devarsi, it had been revealed by Brahma in earlier times that a learned brother who is righteous one would be better than thousands of sons and brothers.

My mother and Prajapati Kasyapa father had described the brother to be of special merit.

Inspite of the Danavas also being our brothers, but they are arrogant as well as sinful. Therefore I always oppose them.

О excellent Brahmana, the talk which relates to the self praise, should not be spoken by a person himself. There is no doubt about it. Therefore, presently the time has arrived for me to speak out.

О great sage, О intelligent one, in earlier times (at the time of the destruction of Yaksa’s sacrifice, when a gana of lord Siva, had cut off the string of lord Siva, as a result of which the head of Visnu in the form of yajha, was cut off, at that point of time, it was I alone, who held the trunk of Visnu and making all the efforts had joined the head with the trunk.

O Narada, when his head was joined to the trunk, then Kesava, the form of Acyuta, strung the bow again, with immense arrogance stood up again, “I am the best of all the gods.”

O great sage, at that point of time, I thought, “Had I not saved him, them what would your parents think of me?” still I had held the body of Visnu with utmost affection.

О sage Narada, the religious performance of the winter season, is dedicated to Indra alone (because lord Visnu goes to sleep at that time). I had presented that share of mine, making it the share of Visnu. (This statement is also supportial by the verse - 26 of Chapter 55 of Harivarhsa Parva). Thus I always treat Krishna — my younger brother with utmost affection.

О great ascetic, at the time of war, (in case Krishna stands on the opposite side, then he should attack on me first, though in other battles I always sticks first, because of my being a king.

О sinless Narada-devoted to dharma, in all the incarnations of Visnu, I had been protecting Visnu like my own body.

O sage, Visnu, breaking the tradition of the heaven, has established his own abode at the place, highest of all and has provided best of importance as compared to the other lokas.

I have neglected that insult as well, keeping in view the glory of the elder brother. I have always thought him to be a boy therefore, he is entitled to earn my affection for him.

O Narada, I have always been of the view that Krishna is only a boy and my younger brother and is entitled to receive son like affection from me. But my parents too had described him to be quite arrogant.

With the people of the earth, Krishna is more popular as a result of which he envy we people. There is no doubt about it. The only reason for this is that Krishna is getting more attached to the human beings.

Upto now, I had been of the opinion that Kesava is omniscent, valorous, great warrior, a worthy person who respects others which has been of no use or fruitless.

O Narada, you go and apprise Krishna in my words, that “I cannot flee when challanged by the enemy in the battle field.

О Krishna — the slave of the wife, in case you intend to strike me with the club, then do it. I shall surely bear this attack from you. You can attack first as desired by you.

O Janardana, you can attack me seated over Garuda, with cakra, Sarang bow, kaumadi gada, and Nandaka sword. О Kesava, in case, I am not overpowered with the brotherly affection, then I shall indulge in a counter attack, after having been attacked by you. Disgrace to such a situation.

О great sage, till such time, I am defeated by the disc holder, I shall not give him Parijata.

О great sage, when Krishna being younger challanges me for the battle, then why should I bear the treatment of Krishna who is the slave of his own wife.

О lord Narada, you can proceed to Dvaraka which is protected by Shri Krishna and convey my reply to him who is waiting for a struggle.

Unless you defeat me in the battle ground, what to speak of Parijata tree, I shall not give you even a leaf of the same. О great ascetic, keeping my words in mind you should repeat my words to MadhusUdana verbatim.

О lord, in order to do good for me, should speak to Krishna without any doubt that it would not be proper for him to steel or usurp the Parijata tree by deceitful means. It should the war of dharma and not a deceitful one.

Here ends chapter — 70, of Visnu Parva of the Harivarhsa Purana, a khilabhaga of the epic of Mahabharata relating to Indra’s rage at the threat of the attack by Shri Krishna and his refusal to part with the Parijata tree without war. (Vrs. 1-50, P.T. - 7059)
