Narada conveys to Indra, Shri Krishna’s request for Parijata tree and his refusal





Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, thereafter, the sage Narada, reaching the Mahendra Bhavana, spent the night there and witnessed the aforesaid festivities there.

The Adityas, the excellent gods, the learned JRsis who had reached their due to their noble deeds, the Nagas, Yaksas, Siddhas, Caranas, the Brahmarsis, hundreds of Devarsis, Marat, the adorable Garuda, the valorous Marudgans, and all the groups of several gods had arrived there.

Above all lord Siva with Parvati was standing with his pramathas, having been surrounded by them. Lord Siva had also been surrounded by the best of Rishis, who never get destroyed even after the lapse of many kalpas.

The selfconscious gods who were not blinded with pride, who followed the path of dharma also adore these Devarsis constantly.

О son of the race of Bharata, the Rudras, the gods, son of Kasyapa, lord Skanda, fire god, Ganga the foremost of the rivers, Arcisman, Tumburu and Bhari (the Gandharvas) were attending on Siva taking their positions close tQ him.

All of them possessed enough of the strength of tapas, are the leadrs of the god of gods. О Naresvara, those who always get engaged in dharma and tapas have taken refuge in the noble path of the divine people, all such gods follow Rudra and others.

Such of the people, with the desire of welfare adore the gods, the gods in turn bestow the desired reward to the people desirous of welfare, honouring them at the same time.

О son of the race of Kuru, such of the people who remain busy in the activities of the gods and the manes, or those who have established the sanyasa-dharma, who always remain engaged in studies, patronising rules of dharma, such people also are granted the desired fruits, while honouring them.

O Naresvara, during the time of the festivities, Citrarath — the lord of Gandharvas, was delightfully playing on the musical instruments there.

Urnayu, Citrasena, Haha, Huhu, Dumber, Tumburu, and the Gandharvas, were singing-with six ganas.

О Bharata, Uravasi, Vipracitti, Hema, Rambha, Hemadanta, Ghrtacl and Sahajanya, all apsaras also displayed their dance and the songs.

Lord Siva, who had controlled himself, the base of the universe, was accepting the dance and the songs relating to himself with delight, which were enjoyed by him. Getting satisfied with the conduct of Indra, Lord Siva retreated to his abode.

After the departure of lord Siva, all the Rdjarsis too went back to their respective abodes. The gods also returned getting honoured from lord Siva.

When all the people had left the place and Indra comfortably took his seat over the lion throne with his cortisrs, at that point of time Narada went to Indra.

Indra got up from his seat and adored the sage Narada, and he lodged him over a seat resembling his own, with the kusa grass spread over the same.

But Devarsi Narada kept on standing and spoke to Indra. “O best of gods, I am presently the messenger of the immensely illustrious lord Visnu.

Shri Krishna, the great soul has deputed me to you from Anarta country (Dvaraka). My main job today is to accomplish the task of Krishna — the noble soul.

Then Indra having been filled with delight asked Narada pleasently using loving words.

“O sage, what is the message of Shri Krishna, the best of the humans? You tell me at once surely Shri Krishna, has remembered me after a long time.”

Narada said — О Mahendra, I had some how gone to Dvaraka in order to meet Shri Krishna, who spreads the glory of the gods there.

The valorous warrior, who subjugates the enemies, lives over the Raivataka mountain with Rukmini in the same way as Siva lives at Kailasa with Parvati.

О sinless lord of gods, I handed over a beautiful flower of Parijata, surprising his wives.

The flower of Parijata, tree, which fulfills, the enormous desires, surprised his wives.

О Praiseworthy lord, I spell out in details the qualities of the flower to his wives and also told them that the Parijata tree was created by the sage Kasyapa.

О Saresvara, then Aditi for the earning of the merit adorning the neck of the sage Kasyapa with the flower garlands, the way the tree was donated to me and the way Saci donated the tree with Indra and also the other gods who had been donated by their.respective wives and the way Kasyapa and others got themselves freed after paying the price for themselves, was narrated by me.

On hearing this, Satyabhama one of his wives and the one who is quite dear to your younger brother thought of earning the merit of donating Krishna with the tree.

О lord, you honour others, as Parvati the wife of Siva speaks out something to her husband similarly Satyabhama demanded from her husband, the Parijata tree Your younger brother promised her the Parijata tree for perfoming of the religious matter.

О foremost of the gods, thereafter, Shri Krishna, the foremost of the valorous people, spoke to me, the words which are required to be communicated to you verbatim, which you please listen.

Acyuta, your younger brother, who is entitled to receive your affection repeatedly, offering his salutation to you has said, “O best of gods, your bride Satyabhama has desired something which is basically a religious one, should be established.

О lord of the world, let the earth also be able to have a look at the tree. You kindly be graceful for the same.

О lord of the universe, let the world have a look at the auspicious tree, (you be graceful for the same.) Because of my influence, let the humans also have a look at the Parijata tree which bestows welfare.

Vaishampayana said — О son of the Kuru race, listening to the message of lord Vasudeva, Devaraja Indra — the best among the orators, said to Narada.

О excellent Brahmana, you first of all take your seat. О Brahmanas you have spoken appropriately. I shall now give the reply to illustrious Visnu’s message.

О lord, when Narada took his seat, then with his permission, Indra too got himself seated over his throne, which was suitable for him alone.

Getting himself seated over the lion throns, Devaraja Indra, the killer of Vrtrasura, looked over his vast strength and then spoke to Narada.

Indra said - О religious minded Maharsi, you enquiring of his welfare, from my side, you speak on my behalf to Janaradana, who bestows comforts to all thus.

“O Acyuta, after me, you happen to be the Isvara of the universe. There is no doubt about it. From this point of view, the Parijata tree as well as all other gems belong to you.

But О lord, you have incarnated on earth to reduce her burden and as such you should always keep in mind the human limitations in your perfomance.

О Visnu, when, after fulfilling your vow for relieving the burden of his earth again return to heaven, I shall fulfill all the desire of your wife Satyabhama.

О Kesava, the gems of the heaven should not be transported from the heaven for petty reasons. This is the limitation established earlier.

O immensely valorous lord, in case, I crossing the limit of conduct myself act differently, then what would the Prajapatis think about me.

Lord Brahma, has established some firm rules, with his sons and the grandsons for all the activities of the world, which are not flexible.

In case, I, discarding the path prescribed by Prajapati Brahma, act differently, then I am liable to be cursed by Prajapati - Brahma.

In case we ourselves shatter the bridge of the ancient traditions then the Daityas and other people, would freely cross all the limits.

О excellent one, in case, in order to please a single woman on earth, the Parijata tree is transported on earth, then the glory of the dwellers of the heaven would be jeapardised and they would be feeling sad.

The self born Brahma, created the materials for the use of humans, my brother should feel satisfied with those things, with the change of time.

О excellent one, what collection of the articles of pleasure are available in the heaven, they can be enjoyed by Shri Krishna while staying here. Janardana has become proud with the consuming of the worldly things and has also grown strong in his body. Because of that pride, he, discarding dharma, has started following the sinful path.

Shri Krishna is under the influence of his wife. In case this fact is spread in the world he would earn blemish for it.

О Narada, it would not be proper for Madhusudana, living on earth in human form, to put up an unreasonable demand to me.

О sinless Devarsi, with the disappearing of the divine gems and their plunder, I shall be insulted. I would therefore be deplorable to get myself insulted by my own kiths and kins.

Madhusudana should enjoy, on earth dharma, artha and kama, taking refuge in dharma of the noble people.

In case, I send Parijata on earth, then who would be the dweller of the heaven to respect me, right from Sachi?

Having a look at Parijata on earth, and by touching it, the people would enjoy the heavenly comforts on earth itself, then who would aspire for the achieving of the heaven.

О Narada, in case the humans, learning about the qualities and merits of Parijata start enjoying them on earth, then no difference would be left in the humans as well as the gods.

Whatever noble deeds are performed on earth, the reward for the same is enjoyed in the heaven. When they achieve the qualities of Parijata on earth, then they would never aspire for the heaven.

О excellent sage, Parijata is the best of all the gems of the heaven. In case it is transported on earth then all the humans would be turned lile the gods and with such humans the entire universe would turn like the heaven.

Enjoying the comforts of the heaven on earth, the humans would be equated with gods. Then they would neither perform yajhas to please the gods nor would they spend their riches for noble deeds.

О excellent sage, the devoted people, aspiring for the achieving of the heaven, adore us with the performing of yajhas and other noble deeds, satisfying us at the same time.

By by deriving out the benefit from Parijata, the humans would never adore us. Getting deprived of the benefits of the yajnas all of us would become lustreless.

When gold rains fall from the heaven, the cereals are grown by the people with the same, on earth. These cereals feed the people, besides the yajnas too are performed with them, besides the charities, offering them to the gods as well.

О religious minded Narada, by deriving the benefit of Parijata, the people would never suffer from hunger and thirst, old age, grief or the death. They would be relieved of bad smell and they shall not face the misfortunes arising out of the evil deeds. (In these circumstances) why should they aspire for achieving the heaven.

О dear one, the shifting of Parijata on the earth is totally improper. Therefore, you should convey this position to Visnu Shri Krishna — who performs enormous deeds without much efforts.

О sage, keeping in mind my pleasure, you must perform there in such a way, which satisfies my brother Shri Krishna.

О divine sage, for the use of the bride Satyabhama, you better carry the divine garlands, the gems, sandal, agaru, and the astonishing types of costumes to Dvaraka.

All the articles which are useful for the humans on earth, can be carried from here for the full satisfaction of Shri Krishna, but it would not be proper for him to make the heaven penyless by plunduring it.

О sage, I am handing over to you large number of gems and astonishing types of costumes, as desired by Shri Krishna, but I can not part with the Parijata tree under any circumstances, because it is not suited for any other place, than the heaven.

Here ends Chapter 69, of Visnu Parva of the Harivarhsa Purana, a khilabhaga of Mahabharata, relating to Narada’s conveying the message of Shri Krishna to Indra demanding the Parijata tree from Indra and his refusal. (Vrs. 1-73, P.T. = 7009)
