Vajranabha proceeds on world conquest against the wishes of the sage Kasyapa-Display of prowess by Pradyumna

Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, after the completion of the yajna of the sage Kasyapa, the illustrious one, all the valorous gods as well as the asuras went back to their respective places.

At the completion of yajna, Vajranabha desirous of conquering the three worlds, went to the sage Kasyapa, who advised him.

“O son Vajranabha, in case my words be acceptable and worth obeying, then you listen to me. You must live in Vajrapurl, surrouded by your relatives.

Indra has much more tapas at his credit as compared with you. He is quite powerful by nature. Besides, he is devoted to the Brahmanas, grateful, the eldest of his brothers. He is excellent also in view of his virtues.

He is the king of the universe and is the refuge of the noble people. Even after having the kingship of the three worlds, he is engaged in the welfare of the people.

О Vajranabha, you cannot conquer him and in your effort to conquer him, you are sure to loose your own life. You will get destroyed like a person gets destroyed with the kicking of a snake.

О Bharata, the entire body of Vajranabha was bound with Kalapasa or the noose of death as the person about to die cannot relish the medicine, similarly, Vajranabha could not relish the advice of the sage Kasyapa.

The terrible asura with evil mind, offering his salutation to Kasyapa, the creator of the universe, thought starting for the job of the world conquest.

О lord of the people, he made some relatives and friends with him as warriors and proceeded on to the heaven, first of all with desire of the conquest.

In the mean time Indra and Shri Krishna deputed the swans with a message for the killing of the demon Vajranabha.

All the valorous Yadavas, who had collected in Vajrapur receiving the message from the mouth of the swans, consulted among themselves.

They thought, “There is no doubt that Vajranabha has to be killed at the hands of Pradyumna, but the daughters of Vajranabha and his brother have been appropriately been married to us with devotion. All of them wish well of us always. All the three Danava girls are present at the moment. What should be done by us presently. The time of their delivery is fast approaching.

Thinking deeply on the issue, the valorous Yadavas said to the swans” “You go to Indra and Shri Krishna and apprise them of the factual position of this place.

О lord, then the female swan went both to Indra and Shri Krishna and apprised them both of the factual position at Vajrapur. Then both of them conveyed the message to the swans, “O Yadavas, you need not be afraid. The girls will produce the beautiful princes, who be able to take any form at will and shall be praiseworthy because of their virtues those sons would achieve the knowledge of all the Vedas and all their parts while in the womb of their mothers.

Similarly they shall automatically know the use of all the weapons. Soon after their taking birth, all of them would became youthful, possessing all the knowledge.”

At these words of the Yadavas, the swans returned to Vajrapur and communicated to them the message of Indra and Shri Krishna.

At the same time Prabhavati gave birth to a son, who possessed all the virtues like his father.

After a month, Candravatl also birth to a son who was valorous and beautiful like his father. He was given the name of Candraprabha.

О Bharata, he at once attained the youthful age becoming omnisceint. Thereafter the chaste Gunavati too produced a son. Both the children at once attained the youthful age and became well versed in the use of weapons. Both of them could march forward in the battle ground. By the grace of Indra and Upendra, both the children were bestowed with all the virtues.

О valorous one, once both the boys while roaming over the terrace of the palace, spotted the demons, at the desire of Indra and Upendra, and not otherwise. You take it for granted from me.

At that point of time, the Daitya warriors who gurarded the sky, feeling nervous, spoke about the boys to Vajranabha, who was desirous of conquering the heaven.

On hearing the words of the guard, Vajranabha, the lord of the asuras said, “The boys have blemished my house. You better capture them in order to kill them.

О pride of the Kuru race, О Janamejaya, then at the command of the demon king, the demon army, surrouded the city from all the sides. Every one shouted catch them and kill them. At the command of the Daitya king all the soldiers uttered like that.

Hearing these words, the mothers, to whom the sons were quite dear, started crying. Finding them so crying, Pradyumna smilingly said to them.

“O daughters of Danavas, donot be afraid. You will always meet with welfare. When all of us are standing here alive, then what harm can the asura do to us?

Then Pradyumna, spoke to the upset PrabLavatl, «O goddess, your father and the uncle are standing here holding clubs in their hands. Your brothers and other relatives are also ready for waging the war. Because of you all of them are adorable and respectable for me.

Let you meet with welfare, you better consult both your sisters as well. This is an awful time for us. One who wages the war bearing the pain of death, he surely becomes victorious.

Vajrancibha — the Daitya king and others, shall fight to kill us. What should be done by us in the present situation? We have to obey your command.”

At that point of time, Prabhavati, knelt down while sobbing and placing her folded hands over her head in ahjali posture said.

«O son of the race of Yadus, and killer of the enemies, pick up your weapons and protect yourself, and in case you remain alive, you can take care of your wives and the progeny. You would be able to meet RukmanI you mother as well as the son Aniruddha. О subjugator of enemies, thinking all this I have relieved you of the distress.

O wise Yadava warrior, the sage Durvasa had granted me a boon, that I shall never face widowhood and would be the mother of the sons who would remain alive.

O son of the younger brother of Indra, this boon assures me, which represents the words of the sage Durvasa who is equated with the fire and the sun and shall come out to be true. It can never be false.”

Thus speaking, the excellent damsel Prabhavati, picked up a sword cleaned it and handed it over to Pradyumna, the son of Rukmini, saying, “You will be victorious.”

Then receiving the sword, which was given to him by Prabhavati, Prdyumna, bowed in reverence to it and held it in his hand.

Similarly Candravati too handed over the sword to Gada pleasently. At the same time Gunvati also gave the sword to Samba.

Thereafter, Pradyumna, humbly said to Hamsaketu — his charioteers, “You should fight against the asuras, on the side of Yadavas and Samba.

I shall fight in the sky as well as in all the directions”. Thus speaking Pradyumna, who was well versed in illusion created a chariot with his illusion.

О son of the race of Kuru, the intelligent Pradyumna, then made a thousand hooded serpent who was better than all the serpents, his charioteer mounted over the chariot to the delight of Prabhavati and started roaming about in the demon army iij the same way as the fire spreads in the straw.

Pradyumna, then started causing paint the asura army with the use of the arrows which were terrific like the snakes, crescent arrows, sharp edged arrows, and the thick headed arrows.

The asuras on their parts with firm resolve, got intoxicated in the battle ground and started showering arrows at Pradyumna from here and there.

Pradyumna, cut off the arms of many of the asuras which were adorned with keyuras and kankanas. The heads of many of the asuras were cut off, wearing kundalas in the ears.

The immensely illustrious Pradyumna, filled the entire battle ground with the limbs of the demons which were cut off with the rezor types of weapons.

Devaraja Indra, who was always victorious in battle, obsreved the fighting between the asuras and the Yadavas standing in the sky with other gods, delightfully.

The Daityas who attacked over Gada and Samba, all of them were killed like the innumerable aquatic animals merging in the ocean.

Observing the condition of the war at that time, Devaraja Indra sent a chariot drawn by the green horse for the use of Gada, making Suvarca — the son of Matali to serve as a charioteer. Besides this, Indra sent his own elephant Airavata for the use of Samba.

Not only this, Indra, deputed Jayanta to help Pradyumna and also deputed the Brahmana Pravara to control the elephant Airavata.

Both Jayanta and Pravara were immensely strong people. Indra, taking permission of Brahma who was well-versed in the ruler for the waging of the war, deputed Jayanta, Pravara, Suvarca to participate in the war.

All the people spoke of their own there, that the tapas of Vajranabha is on the decline. The wicked demon is bound to meet with his end at the hands of the Yadavas.

Both the valorous Pradyumna and Jayanta reached the roof of the palace, and displaying their prowess, they started destroying the asuras.

At that point of time Pradyumna — the son of Shri Krishna and invincible in the war, said to Gada, Devaraja Indra has sent his chariot for you.

The horse of green colour are yoked in it. Suvarca the valorous son of Matali serves as a driver of this chariot. The elephant, Airavata which is controlled by the Brahmana Pravara, has been sent by Indra for the use of Samba.

О uncle, lord Mahadeva has to be adored in Dvaraka with great festiveties. Lord Krishna — my father would arrive here after the completion of the puja of the lord Siva.

With his permission alone, we shall kill Vajranabha who is desirous of conquering the heaven, with his relatives and friends.

I shall make such an arrangement, by which the terrific Daityas is unable to defeat Indra with his son. But we should not be arrogated the least.

This is what I feel the learned people making use of all the remedies, should save their wives. In case the wife is humiliated by others, it becomes painful like death.”

At these words of Gada and Samba, the valorous Pradyumna, created crores of Pradyumnas with his illusion.

As a result of this the pitch darkness created by the demons was removed with this performance of Pradyumna, Indra was immensely pleased.

All the living beings, found Pradyumna the son of Shri Krishna, standing in the battle field and they found them the same in all the inner souls.

Thus fighting Pradyumna — the son of Rukmini, spent the whole night and with his own glory, he destroyed three fourth of the demon army.

Till such time Pradyumna — the son of Shri Krishna, was in conflict with the Daityas, Jayanta performed Sandhya with the water of the Ganga. Thereafter Jayanta kept on fighting. Thereafter in the mean time Pradyumna performed sandhya in the water of the Akasa Ganga.

Chapter 97

Pradyumna kills Vajranabha

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, at the rise of the sun — the eyes of the world and after two ghadis of the sun rose, then Shri Hari appeared there riding over Garuda — the enemy of the serpents.

О son of the Kuru race, the bird Garuda who could move with the speed greater than the swan, wind and the mind, flew in the sky and stood before Indra.

Reaching before Indra, Shri Krishna, met him appropriately and blew his couch named Pancajanya, which increased the fear of the Daityas.

Pradyumna, the destroyer of the enemy soldiers, at once arrived there hearing the sound of the Pancajanya. Then Shri Krishna said to him, you kill Vajranabha quite quickly.”

Then inspiring him, he said, “You better move mounted over Garuda.” Then Pradyumna, did so as desired by both the gods.

О valorous son of Bharata’s race, О Naresvara, thereafter, Pradyumna, mounted over Garuda — which moved with the speed of the wind and shortly reached before Vajranabha.

The unblemished Pradyumna, well versed in the use of various weapons, mounted firmly over Garuda reached the battle field and started causing pain to Vajranabha.

Pradyumna the son of Shri Krishna, while seated on Garuda, struck the chest of Vajranabha with his club.

As a result of this, the immensely valorous Vajranabha fainted, vomiting excessive blood from his mouth. His head was giddy and he looked becoming lifeless.

Thereafter Pradyumna — the son of Krishna, who was well versed in the waging of war, said to him, “You be rest assured.” At this Vajranabha regained his consciousness and said to Pradyumna.

“Very well” inspite of your being an enemy, but you are praise worthy from me because of your prowess. Now the time has come for me to answer your attack. Therefore, О valorous one, you be attentive.”

Thus speaking, he uttered a lion’s roar resembling the thunder of thousands of clouds. Then he shot a club with thorns and the bells.

The club deeply injured the forehead of Pradyumna. As a result of this Pradyumna, was fainted vomiting blood.

Finding him fainted, lord Shri Krishna, in order to rejuvnate his son, blew his conch Pancajanya which was recovered from the ocean.

Pradyumna was reassured with the sound of Pancajanya. All the people felt delighted at this, including Indra and Shri Krishna.

O Bharata, at the desire of Shri Krishna, his cakra at once reached the hand of Pradyumna. It had thousand of spokes, and its navel was fitted with daggers. This cakra was destroyer of the Daityas.

О Bharata, then Pradyumna, the son of Shri Krishna, shot the cakra for the destruction of Vajranabha.

With the shooting of the cakra by Pradyumna, in full view of all the Daityas it cut off the head of Vajranabha, which separated his head from the trunk.

Gada, who was standing over the roof of the palace, also killed the demon Sunama who was desirous of killing Gada and was aspiring to be victorious in the battle ground.

Samba also — the destroyer of enemies, killed the asuras standing in the battle field and sent them to the abode of Yama.

The demon Kumbha, was frightened at the killing of Vajranabha. He therefore getting terrified from Shri Krishna entered the city of Satapur.

After the killing of Vajranabha — the killer of the gods, then both Indra as well as Shri Krishna, descended in Vajrapur.

О Naresvara at that point of time, both young and old of two places were feeling paniestrikas. All of them were assured by them.

Both Indra and Upendra consulting about the present and the future, following the advice of Brhaspati, distributed the kingdom of Vajranabha into four parts.

О Janesvara, one fourth of the kingdom was given away to Jayanta — the son of Indra. One part was given away to the son of Pradyumna. The third part was given to the son of Samba and the fourth part was given away to Candraprabha — the son of Gada.

О lord of the people, Vajranabha had nearly four crores of villages in his country, while there were a thousand of Sakha - towns, which were as promising as the Vajrapur. Thereafter both Indra and Upendra, having bee filled with delight also divided the riches of the place in four parts.

О valorous Janamejaya, both Indra and Kesava, also divided into four parts the articles of the place like blankets, rugs, deer-skins, costumes of the gems of various types.

О Naresvara, at the command of Indra, all the four warriors, were crowned as the kings with the sounding of the divine kettledrums, using the auspicious water of the Ganga. All the four princes who delighted Indra as well as Upendra were crowned in presence of the Rishis as well as the sages.

The prowess of the intelligence to move in the sky was already well known. The valorous princes, because of the grace of their mothers, could also fly in the sky.

Indra, the lord of fortunes, crowning both the princes then said to Jayanta, that he should also protect the rulers who had been victorious in the war.

О sinless one, one of these princes is the founder of my race, while the other three are to expand the race of Shri Krishna. At my command, all of them would be invincible from all the living beings.

Their movements in the sky would be automatically established. They would move freely in the heaven as well as Dvarakapur, which is guarded by the Yadavas.

The elephants which are the sons of the elephants of the directions, the horses, born in the race of Uccaisrava besides the chariots built by Visvakarma, should be given to them as per their desire.

Ripunjaya and Satrunjaya — the sons of Airavata should be given to Samba and Gada, which would enable both of them to move in the sky. This would enable both the warriors of Bhima’s race to move freely in the sky well guarded. They can also give them to their sons, when the times comes.”

With this message Indra, the lord of fortunes, returned to the heaven, while Kesava returned to Dvaraka.

Gada, Pradyumna and Samba-all the three of them, stayed there for six more months. When their kingdoms were firmly settled, then they returned to Dvaraka.

О Janamejaya — the divine warriors, even today in the north west of the Meru mountain, those countries are found and they shall the there till the world lasts.

О lord of fortunes, at the end to the Mausala-war when all the people of Vrsni race departed for the heaven, then Gada, Pradyumna and Samba had gone to Vajrapur.

О lord of the people, by living there, by the grace of lord Shri Krishna, they departed for heaven because of their noble deeds.

О Naradeva, thus I have narrated to you the story of the exaltation of Pradyumna, which bestowd riches, gloiy and the fame. With its recitation the enemies like the desire and anger, vanished. There is an increase in the sons and the grand sons. One becomes healthy and there is an increase in the riches. A person’s riches and the fame also increases. This has been ordered by the sage Dvaipayana Vyasa.

Here ends chapter — 97, of Harivamsa Parva of the Harivariisa Purana, a supplementary of the epic of Mahabharata relating to the killing of Vajranabha by Pradyumna. (Vrs. 1-44. P.T. = 8643)
