Reconstuction of the deserted city of Dvaraka by Visvakarma

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, lord Krishna saw the city of Dvaraka seated over Garuda, which looked like the heaven. It was surrounded by the ocean which created thundering sound that echoed in all the quarters.

The city had several mountains dazzling with gems. There were a large number of sporting houses, several orchards, the impressive gardens, terraces and the square platforms. Shri Krishna looked at them all.

The Shri Krishna the son of Devaki, reaching close to Dvaraka, then Indra summoned Visvakarma and said to him.

О best of the archeticts, in case you intend to please me, then for the delight of Shri Krishna, rebuilt the city of Dvaraka, making it more beautiful than it was earlier.

О excellent one, as there are hundreds of orchards in my city full of greenery and grace, you make it as pleasent as the heaven.

Whatever gems you find in the three worlds, should be brought and used in Dvaraka for the purpose of construction, (comparable with the heaven).

It is beacause, Shri Krishna is always ready to help the gods at the time of need entering in the war.”

At the command of Indra, Visvakarma departed and decorated city of Dvaraka in the same way comparable with Amaravati of Indra.

Then Shri Krishna, with his vehicle as Garuda, spotted his city of Dvaraka well decorted like the city of Indra by Visvakarma.

Finding the city of Dvaraka thus decorated, the all pervading lord Narayana entered it delightedfully.

With the decoration of Dvaraka carried out by Visvakarma, Shri Krishna, found several groves which attracted the mind and the eyes.

The city was surrounded by several moates which were as vast and deep as the river Ganga and Sindhu. They were filled with the large number of lotus flowers, and were being served by the swans.

The boundary walls were built over the high mounds which were shining like the sun rays which surrounded it and looked like the sun surrounded by the clouds in the sky.

The city of Dvaraka was surrounded by the orchards as beautiful as Nandana and Chaitraratha forests and resembled the sky covered with the clouds.

The Raivataka mountain lodged to the east to Dvaraka, looked quite charming. Its peaks, caves and plains were quite beautiful. Its outer gates were built with gold studded with gems.

To the south of Dvaraka a mountain known by the name of Latavesta appeared quite fine, which being of five colours, looked like the rainbow, over which the forests with blossoming flowers appeared quite attractive.

О best of the monarchs, the Venuman mountain resembling the white Mandarachala mountain, was adding to the grace to the city.

The vast forets like those of chitraka, Pancavarna, the vast Pahcajanya, Sarvaturka were lodged around the Raivataka mountain.

On all the four sides of the Lalavestha mountain, the huge forests known by the names of Meruprabha, Bhdnuvana and Puspaka were lodged.

Around the Sukaksa mountain, there is a forest of Rudraksa, Bijahavana, Mandara- vana with Mandara trees, Satavartana vana and karavira forests were lodged. On all the sides of Venuman mountain, the huge forest of Chaitraratha, Nandamavana, Ramana- vana, and Bhavana-vana were lodged.

The Mandakini river on the east having the lotus flowers resembling the lapiz lazuli looks like the river Puskarini.

The ausipcious river Mandakini having fifty streams delighting the people of Dvaraka entered the city from all the sides.

Basically the city of Dvaraka was so vast that it was beyond measure. It was quite high and was surrounded by immensely deep moats. It was also graced by the terraces. The walls of the city were whitewashed with lime.

Lord Krishna found Dvarakapurl fitted with sharp yantras, missiles and the nets of gold. It was secured with huge chakras of iron.

In the city of Dvaraka, there were eight thousand chariots with small bells like the city of gods. The raised flags were fluttering therein.

The width of Dvarakapuri was eight yojanas and its length was 12 yojanas. It was spread in an area of ninety six yojanas. The suburb of Dvaraka was spread in double of its area. Shri Krishna had a look at the immobile city of Dvaraka.

There were eight approach roads leading to the city with sixteen crossings. In this way the city of Dvaraka was with so many roads, according to the policy of Sukracarya.

The foundation of Dvaraka was such that even the women could fight the war, then what to speak of the great warriors of the Vrishni dynasty? There were several vyuhas there led by the excellent roads.

The various roads of Dvarakapuri were built by Visvakarma himself. Looking at the gigantic palaces of the glorious rulers of Dasarha dynasty, Lord Krishna, the son of Devaki was immensely delighted. The palace had the stairs of gold studded with gems which delighted the minds of the people.

With huge and terrific sounds produced in the city, the palaces having beautiful courtyards, the high flags fluttering over the palaces gave a pleasant sight. The gardens set-up in the palaces had the trees which were shaking with the blowing of the wind. The tops of the palaces were decorated with kalasas which looked beautiful. With the palaces which touched the sky it looked like the peaks of Meru mountain.

The peaks of the palaces were whiter than the white and were studdes with gold. They resembled the high mountain with gems studded peaks and caves.

The palaces were painted with five colours, many of them were also plastered with five colours, many of them were plastered in golden colours. Some of the palaces were so graceful that it appears the flowers were being rained over them. The thundering sound of the clouds was heard in the places. The multi-coloured palaces looked like huge mountains.

The illustrious places built by Visvakarma were resplendent like the shining fire of the forest fire. By looking at it, it appeared as if a golden line had been drawn in the sky, the lustre of which was greater than that of the sun or the moon.

With the presence of Chitraka forest and their trees, the presence of great warriors of Dasarha family and the houses resembling the clouds, the city of Dvaraka appeared extremely graceful, with the sky having been decorated with the garland of clouds. Lord Krishna looked graceful there like Indra and Parjanya.

The place of Lord Vasudeva which was built by Visvakarma was 4 yojana in length as well as breadth. The riches spent in building the place were beyond estimation.

Inside the vast palace there were several other palaces as well as the balconies; one could withness the mountain scene from the palace, or some artificial mountains were raised in those palaces. The excellent Visvakarma had built the palaces at the inspiration of Indra.

The golden palace was present for all the human beings. The top of the palace was covered with gold, as a result of which it looked like the highest peak of the mountain Meru. Visvakarma had built that palace for the stay of Rukmini, the chief queen of Lord Krishna. The palace in which Satyabhama was living was of white colour with steps of gems. It was considered to be fit for enjoying all the pleasures. It had illustrious flags which were spotless like the sun and added to the grace of the mountain.

Jambavati lived in a alace, the interior and exterior of which were extremely beautiful and over which beautiful flags were fluttering on all the sides. It was putting to shame the sun and other palaces with its lustre.

Its lustre resembled the lustre of rising sun. It was located in between the palaces of Rukmini and Satyabhama. This divine palace was built by Visvakarma which resembled the mountain Kailasa.

О best of the Bharata’s race, the great palace meant for Satya, the daughter of Nagnajita, also known as Gandharl was lodged in a place which was shinning like the gold and burning fire. It was vast like the ocean and was given the name of Meru. Gandhari was lodged in that palace by Shri Krishna.

The palace known by the name of Padmukiila, having the lustre of lotus, shining, having the high Shikharas and the pleasent shine was meant for Subhlma to serve as her adobe.

О best of the rulers the palace which had the quality which fulfilled all the desires and was resplendent like the sun, the same palace was given by Shri Krishna to Laksmana-one of his wives.

О Bharata Mitravinda — another wife of Shri Krishna lived in the palace which was painted green and issued lustre of lapizlazuli. It was considered to be the best by all the people. The gods and Rishis praised it very much. In fact it was the ornament of all the palaces.

The palace which was built by Visvakarma at Dvaraka, was extremely pleasant was standing like the mountain, was the abode of Suvarta, the wife of Krishna. It was praised by all the gods and was known by the name of Ketuvarman.

The palace which was the best of all the palaces was built by Visvakarma, and was spread in an area of a square yojana was built with the gems, with an auspicious look and was known by the name of Kantiman. It was the abode of Giraja. Lord Kesava lived thee with Giraja.

The beautiful palace of Shri Krishna, the son of Vasudeva, could be approached with the help fo signboards and the flags which were fluttering on the road. Shri Krishna, the lion among the Yadus had collected heaps of gems and had also established the mountain named Vaijayanta.

The Hanskiita mountain peak which was a high as the sixty palm trees and half a yojana in width was lodged over the bank of Indradyumna lake.

The immensely illustrious Visvakarma in full view of all the gods, lifted up that mountain with the Kinnaras and Nagas and brought it here.

Visvakarma had also uprooted the excellent peak of Meru mountain which obstructed the path of the sun, and was in the form of Jambunada and well-known in the three worlds was also uprooted by Visvakarma and lodged in Dvaraka. It was the best, illutrious and bestowed all the osadhis.

Visvakarma brought the mountain here at the instruction of Indra with some purpose. Shri Krishna had also brought the Parijata tree to Dvaraka.

While carrying the Parijata tree Shri Krishna fought a great war with the gods protecting the tree, that tree was adorned with hundreds of lotuses and golden planes, well- guarded it from all the sides. Visvakarma produced a tree for Shri Krishna which produced gem-like fruits and flowers.

He also built several step-wells and the lakes. The waters of which had enough of lotus flowers. The poignant gem-like flowers blossomed in them. There were boats of gold in the lakes which were studded with gems. The high tree standing over the banks of the lake looked quite beautiful. The trees included Tala, Sala, Kadamba and the banyan tree with hundreds of branches besides the trees growing over Himalya and Meru mountain. All those trees were brought by Visvakarma and were transplanted in Dvaraka.

These trees were of red, yellow, pink and black colours. The trees which were brought from the boundary of the forest and the orchards, yielded fruits in all the seasons.

The rivers of the excellent city had similar types of banks, filled with water which was free from the pebbles and sand. The water of the reservoirs was quite neat and clean besides being spotless.

The other rivers had the pebbles and the sand of gold and were filled with fragrant water of the flower. Several types of trees and creepers were spreading over their banks.

The intoxicated peacocks and cuckoos graced the tree of Dvaraka.

The heards of elephants besides the cows and buffaloes were also found there. The pigs (boars), the deer and the birds were also found in abundance in Dvaraka.
