Kidnapping of Pradyumna by Sambasura and the end of the demon

Janamejaya said — О sage, you had earlier spoken that Pradyumna had killed Sambasura. I would like to know the details about the episode. How did Pradyumna kill Sambasura?

Vaishampayana said — О King, the womb of lord Vasudeva’s wife Rukmini — another Laksmi, Kamadeva observing the best of Vratas was born in the form of Pradyumna. It is he who destroyed the demon Smabasura. According to the opinion of some other Puranas, he is said to be the incarnation of Sanatkumara, born as Pradyumna.

After the birth of Pradyumna, seven nights passed and Sambasura kidnapped the infant son of Shri Krishna from the labour room.

Shri Krishna who was well-versed in Devamaya was well aware of the future course of happenings and as such, he did not capture the wicked demon warrior.

The death had overpowered his age. As a result this the great asura stole the child with the use of his illusion. He therefore carried the child in both his hands and entered the city.

The asura had a virtuous and meritorious wife, who was issueless. She was known by the named of Mayavati, who looked beautiful like Maya.

The Danava, under inspiration from the destiny taking the son of Shri Krishna as his own son, handed over the child to his wife in her hands.

At the mere look of the child Mayavati was thrilled with delight. She blissfully looked at the face of the child again and again.

Observing the child, Mayavati, recollected the earlier memories of her life and she started thinking, “He happens to my husband of the earlier birth.”

He is my master and the lord it is for him that I has remained overpowered with worries and grief, having no solace at any moment.

In the ancient times, lord Siva had made him without a body because of his disturbing the tapas of Siva, he reduced his body to ashes. I am meeting him again in another birth.

Since I am aware of this secret, then how can I make him suck my breast as a mother? He happens to be my husband, therefore, how can I treat him as my son?”

Thus thinking in her mind, Mayavati, entrusted the care of the child to a mid wife and with the use of alchemy, she accelerated his growth.

Pradyumna, the son of Rukmini, listening to the praise of Mayavati unmindfully took Mayavati to be his mother.

When with Mayavati’s efforts Pradyumna was grown up, then she becoming passionate for him, imported knowledge of all the demonic illusions.

When Pradyumna reached the youthful age, and he looked like the god of love. He was well versed in mental advances of the ladies besides the use of arms.

Once Mayavati developed voluptuous feelings for her beloved. She then speaking with smile tried to attract him towards herself. Pradyumna, finding Mayavati so passionately attracted towards himself, he spoke to her.

Pradyumna said — “How is it that discarding the feelings of a mother, you are behaving otherwise? You appear to be an unchaste one. Your mind is disturbed because of your womanhood.

Because of that, you discarding the affaction of a mother for me are behaving in the opposite direction as a voluptious woman. It appears that I do not happen to be your son. О pleasent one, how has the diversity develop in your conduct?

О goddess, I intend to know the reality about you. You tell me truthfully about your behaviour? Surely the mind of the woman is unstable like the the lightening. As the clouds come in touch with the mountain peaks, similarly the passionate women fall for every man.

О auspicious and pleasent one, you tell me in case I happen to be your son or not I would like to hear the truth from you mouth. What do you intend to do?”

When so questioned by Pradyumna, Mayavati, having a cowardly heart, whose all the sense organs had been overpowered with passion, said to him, “O beloved of my life, you are not my son, and Sambasura is not your father.

О son of the race of Vrsnis, you are charming and valorous by birth and are the son of Krishna — the son of Vasudeva and the mother Rukmini and increase her delight.

A week after your birth, when you were merely an infant and were made to sleep over a bed, then Sambasura, who had been feeding me, abducted you from the labour room, disrespecting the vast palace.

You are the son of a father who is illustrious like Indra. Still Sambasura stole you. О valorous one, your mother is Rukmini, getting separated from you is grieving and lamenting, badly suffering at the sdme time, in the same way as a cow cries in separation of her calf.

Your father is lord of Garuda and is greater than Indra even. But he is also not aware of the factual position about your kidnapping during infancy.

О beloved, you are the prince of Shri Krishna and not the son of Sambara. О valoruos ones the sons like you are not born with the Danavas.

О pleasent one, this is the reason for my having a desire for you, because you were nbt at all born of my womb. I am a weak, shelterless woman, am suffering from passion inwardly because of your beauty.

O beloved of my life, son of the race of Vrsni, whatever have I thought of doing, and whatever are my inner feelings, you fulfill the same, by residing in my mind.

I have exposed the noble feelings about you in my mind. You are neither my son or the son of Sambasura.”

Listening to the words of Mayavari Pradyumna — the son of Shri Krishna — the holder of cakra, felt enraged. He was well aware of all the illusions. Then he thought of challanging Sambasura, disclosing his own name to him.

Then he thought on to himself, “It is surprising that the wicked soul, kidnapped the infant son of Kesava, still he is fearless and presently I am afraid of him.

How can he get annoyed with me, and how could he be killed by me? What should I do to attract the ire of the wicked demon.

He has an astonishing flag, which is embossed with the mark of a lion and has been installed over the outer gate and looks high like the Meru mountain.

I shall cut it and make it fall on the ground with my spear. Finding his flag destroyed, Sambasura would come out in the open for waging a war.

Then I, killing him in the battle shall proceed to Dvaraka.” With this resolve in his mind, Pradyumna forcefully strung the bow, placing an arrow over it.

Then Pradyumna, cut off the flag of the Daitya with his arrow. When Pradyumna thus damaged the flag, then Sarhbara getting enraged, commanded his warriors and said “O valorous warriors, you capture at once the son of Rukmini, he has injured my feelings, therefore, I do not intend to see him alive.

Listening to the command of Sambara, his sons, decorating themselves with coat of arms etc. marched on delightfully for the killing of Pradyumna.

The army commanders were known by the names of Chitrasena, Atisena, Visvaksena, Gada, Srutasena, Susena, Somasena, Mana, Senani, Senyahanta, Senaha, Salnika, Senaskandha, Atisena, Senaha, Janaka, Suta, Sakala, Vikas, Santa, Sutantakara, Asuci, Kumbhaketu, Sudanstra, KesI and others.

All of them were delightful and being enraged against Pradyumna, holding cakras, tomaras, tridents, pattisas, besides the battle axes, they marched on.

At that point of time the valorus Pradyumna, at once mounted the chariot marched on to the battle ground.

Thereafter, the grandsons of Sambasura, fought with the son of Kesava, a terrific battle which was quite exciting.

Then all the gods, Gandharvas, the huge Nagas, besides the Caranas, under the leadership of Indra, were seated in the fore courts of the plane.

The Gandharvas, like Tumburu, Haha, and Huhu, who sang songs besides Narada were also seated in the plane.

The Attndant of Indra — the holder of Vajra, started commentry on the astonishing performance of Pradyumna.

“A hundred sons of Sambasura were on the one side and against them was the lonely Pradyumna the son of Shri Krishna, who could be victorious on several of the warriors.

Listening to the talk of the gods, Indra laughed alouded and said, ” Listen to the prowess of Pradyumna.

He is Kamadeva, who in his earlier birth had been reduced to ashes by lord Siva. Then Rati — the wife of Kamadeva, pleased lord Siva, who bestowed a boon on her getting pleased.

“Lord Visnu, taking to the human form as Krishna shall live in Dvaraka, Kamadeva, your master shall be born as his son, there is no doubt about it.

Presently Kamadeva shall be known in the three would as Ananga. Having been born in Dvaraka, he would perform a great job, and kill Sambasura.

Just a week after his birth, Sambhasura kidnapped the child Pradyumna, from the lap of Rukmini under the influence of Maya.

Therefore you go to the abode of Sambasura and function as his illusiory wife. You conceal your true form with the use of illusion and keep on confusing Sambasura.

Kamadeva your beloved shall be found by you there in the form of a child. You shall bring him of as a mid-wife. On achieving the youthful age, you make him grow up. Becoming youthful he shall kill the Daitya Sambasura.

Thereafter, Kamadeva shall accompany you to Dvaraka and shall live with you with pleasure, as I live with Parvati delightfully.

Thus issuing the command, Siva- — the excellent one, being served by the siddhas, and Charanas, proceeded towards Kailasa which is like the Meru mountain.

Thereafter Rati — the wife of Kamadeva, offering her salutation to the lord of Uma, waiting for the end of Sambasura, proceeded to her abode.

In this way the valorous Pradyumna, shall kill Sambasura with his sons, because he alone could kill the wicked demon.
