Battle between Pradyumna and Sambasura

Vaishampayana said — О lord of the subjects, then Sambasura was enraged, and he commanded his charioteer, “O valorous one, you at once drive chariot before my enemy to enable me to kill Pradyumna with my arrows.”

Listening to the words of his master, the driver, who always acted to please his master, moved forward the golden chariot. With the advancing of the chariot towards himself, the eyes of Pradyumna blossomed with delight.

He getting enraged placed a golden arrow over it and increasing the anger of Sambasura with it, he wounded Sambasura in the battle field.

The arrow had struck his chest painfully, as a result of which Sambasura became nervous and then fainted, but kept on standing there, with the support of the chariot.

Regaining consciousness, Sambasura picked up the bow again and attacked the son of Shri Krishna with seven arrows.

On his part, Pradyumna, shot seven arrows and destroyed all the seven arrows of the Demon-midway, before they reached him. At the same time, he shot seventy more arrows, which injured Sambasura.

Then he again shot a thousand arrows with wings of peacock and vultures, in anger and wounded Sambasura, as the clouds douse the mountain, with rain water.

All the directions were covered with the rain of the arrows. There was a complete darkness in the sky. The sun became invisible.

Sambasura then used the lighenting arrows, removed the darkness and showered the arrows over the seats of Pradyumna’s chariot.

О king, then the king displaying the efficency of his hands shattered the enemy’s net of arrows into pieces.

When the rain of arrows of the enemy was so neutratised by the son of Shri Krishna, then Kala-Sambara started showering the rain of trees with illusion.

Finding the trees multiplying with the rain of trees, Pradyumna fainted with anger. Then he used the fire weapon and destroyed all the trees.

With the destruction of the trees, the Daitya started showering the stone slabs, but Pradyumna, making use of the wind weapon in the war, drove away all the stone slabs.

О lord of the people, then the glorious Sambara — the enemy of the gods, displayed another type of illusion. Holding the bow in his hand, Sambara, started dropping the lions, tigers, boars, percupines, bears, monkeys, the elephants resembling the black clouds, horses, camels, as the arrows.

Pradyumna then used the Gandharvastra and reduced all of them to pieces.

Thus Pradyumna, destoryed the illusion. This enraged Sambasura who was fainted thereafter and he applied an other illusion.

He produced the powerful huge elephants of sixty years each, which looked quite youthful, from whose temples the fluid was issuing. The competents mahauts were driving them. All of them were decorated, with war accessories. All of them appeared to be competent in the art of waging the war.

Witnessing the advance of the illusion of the elephants towards himself the lotus eyed Shri Krishna’s son Pradyumna, thought of involving the illusion of lions.

When the lion’s illusion was created by Pradyumna, then as the darkness disappeared with the rising of the sun, similarly the illusion of the elephants disappeared.

With the vanishing of the illusion of elephants, Sambara — the king of asuras, created another illusion of Sammohini, or confusion.

Observing the Mohinf-illusion created by Maya-Ddnava, Pradyumna destroyed it with the use of sanjnastra.

After the destruction of that illusion, then the enraged Danava - Sambara, created the illusion of the lions.

The son of Rukmini, finding the lions rushing towards himself, he created an illusion of Sarbhas.

All of them had eight legs and were immensely strong. The nails and their paws were the only weapons with them. As the wind drives away the clouds, similarly the Sarbhas drove away the lions.

With the fleeing of the lions, while facing the Sarbha, Sambasura felt concerned about the future course of action for the killing of Pradyumna. He then thought, “I am of foolish nature, because I did not kill him during childhood itself.

Now attaining the youthful age, the evil minded enemy, is presently well-versed in the use of all the arms. Therefore how could he be killed in the battle field?

Anyway the terrible and awful Pannagi illusion is still with me, which was bestowed to me by lord Siva himself.

I shall now create the illusion of poisionous snakes. With the use of the illusion comprising of the poisonous snakes, he would surely be burnt out.

Thus thinking, the asura created the illusion, which issued the flames of poison. With the use of that illusion, Sambara captured the chariot, horses, besides Pradyumna with his charioteer, who were around by the serpent.

Realising himself to have been bound with the serpents, Pradyumna of the race of Vrsnis, conceived of Sauparni or Garuda Vidya.

Then as soon as Mahatma Pradyumna, invoked the Garudividya, at once a large number of the Garuda birds reached there as a result of which the extemely poisonous snakes were destroyed.

With the destruction of the illusion of serpents, all the gods and the asuras started praising Pradyumna immensely saying, “O son of Rukmini, you have done well. The illusion which has been defeated by you, we are quite happy with it.

With the destruction of the illusion of serpents, Sambasura thought again. I still possess the golden mudgara which is awful like kaladanda.

It cannot be defeated by the gods, Danavas as well as the humans. I shall make use of it. This mudgara was granted to me by the goddess Parvati saying, “O Sambasura, this is the golden mudgara, you receive it. I created it with the performing of the severe tapas.

This is the mudgara which ends the illusions, besides being the destroyer of the enemy. With the use of this mudgara I had destroyed two strong and awful demons named Sumbha and Nisumbha who could take to any form at will. You should use this mudgara when your life is in danger.”

Thus speaking, the goddess disappeared. Therefore, I shall attack my enemy, using this mudgara.

Realising about the intentions of Sambasura, Indra spoke to Narada, “You at once move close to the chariot of Pradyumna and speak to him enlightening him about his past birth. At the same time you hand over the Vaisnava weapon to him for the killing of Sambasura, besides an impreguable kavaca to him.”

At these words of Indra, Narada anxiously went to the place of Pradyumna. Standing in the sky he spoke to Pradyumna, having the flag of такта (crocodile).

He said, “O Prince, I am Narada — the Gandharva of the gods and have arrived here at the instance of Indra to enlighten you about facts.

О excellent one, you remember about your earlier birth, you are the incarnation of Kamadeva and were reduced to ashes with fire of anger of lord Siva. Therefore you are known in the world as Ananga.

You are presently born in the Vrsni race from the womb of Rukmini. You are the son of the lord Kesava and are known by the name of Pradyumna.

Even before the seventh night of your birth, Sambasura kidnapped you from the labour room and brought you up.

О valorous one, for the establishing of the task of the gods, and for the killing of Sambasura, Shri Krishna, neglected your kidnapping by the demon.

Mayavati, who is pretending to be the wife of Sambasura, should be taken by you as your earlier wife Rati.

She resided in the place of Sambasura, just to protect your body. In order to confuse the wicked demon, she created an illusory woman, who was usually sent by her to please the demon.

Your spouse stays here, knowing about the reality, fully well. You are required to go to Dvaraka with your spouse, after killing Sambasura.

О killer of the enemies, Indra has sent the Vaistiava weapon as well as coat of arms, for your use. You better receive them.

Now you listen to me further and should follow me without any doubt. This mudgara is inimical for the gods and is extremely powerful, besides being invincible. It was bestowed to Sambasura by Parvati, getting pleased. It destroys the enemies and is quite effective.

In order to make the weapon inflructuous, you must adore the goddess Parvati. The warriors desirous of waging the war, must adore the goddess Parvati, offering salutation to her at the same time.

At the time of waging a war with the enemy, you should surely worship the goddess Parvati.” Thus speaking Narada returned to the abode of Indra.

Here ends chapter — 106, of Visnu Parva of the Harivariisa Purana, a supplementary to the epic of the Mahabharata, relating to the battle between Pradyumna and Sambasura. (Vrs. 1-58, P.T. = 9119)
