Battle between Yadavas and the demon army

Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, the bards and magadhas, started singing the praise of Shri Krishna, accompanied with various types of musical instruments, reciting various stotras. The people standing there with raised heads started biassing them for victory. At that point of time lord Krishna, took to the form of Soma, SUrya, and Sukra, which was quite resplendent.

О king, Let you meet with welfare, the form of Garuda — the son of Vinata who was flying in the sky, with the presence of lord Hari over him became shinig and resplendent, looking graceful.

Thereafter, the lotus eyed Sr! Krishna displayed his eight arms, desirous of the destruction of Banasura, expanded his body like a mountain and looked more graceful.

In the left hand, he held the shield, bow, vajra and the couch as attributes, while in the right hands he held the couch, club, cakra and the arrow.

At that time Shri Krishna, the holder of the Saranga bow, created thousands of his heads, while Samkarsana created thousands of his bodies.

Balarama — the invincible one, holding the while weapons, appeared like the mountain Kailasa, with his peak. Both of them while travelling, seated over Garuda, appeared like the rising moon.

While getting ready for war, suddenly, the form of Sanatkumara appeared in the body of Pradyumna.

The valorous Garuda, with the use of his wings with force, shook several of the mountains which went on obstructing the path of the wind.

Thereafter moving with the speed greater then the wind, Garuda soon reached the path followed by the siddhas and the Caranas.

At that point of time Balarama, spoke to the immensely valorous Shri Krishna in the battlefield, “O Krishna, how is it that both of us, having been deprived of our natural lustre, have become so unique?

The lustre of our limbs has become golden. There is no doubt about it. How has it been done? You tell me clearly. Are we moving close to the Meru mountain”?

Shri Bhagavan said: О destroyer of the enemy, I believe that we are close to the city of Banasura. The fire is issuing its flames, for the protection of the city of Bana from the out side.

О brother carrier of a plough. We have been affected because of the flames of fire. Because of this, the complexion of our body has been changed.

Shri Rama said: О Krishna, in case we are closing in towards Sonitpur, and have become inactive because of the fire flames, then you should think yourself what should be beneficial for us?

The Bhagavan said: О son of Vinata you should do here whatever is suitable to the occasion. I shall display my prowess only after the fire is extinguished.

Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, on hearing the words of Shri Krishna, the son of Vinata, the illusory Garuda, who could take to any form at will, created thousands of his mouths.

Thereafter, the valorous son of Vinata, at once went to the bank of the river Ganga. Descending from the sky, Garuda damk enough of water in his beaks. Then returning from there, he poured the water over the fire. By this method, the son of Vinata, exinguished the fire atonce.

Thereafter the fire was extinguished. After the extinguishing of the fire, Garuda was surprised and he said.

“It is surprising, the force of fire is quite surprising, because it can reduce to ashes all the three lokas during the time of dissolution. Presently the same fire has changed the complexion of the intelligent Shri Krishna.

(Still because of the influence of Shri Krishna, the fire has been extinguished with the dropping of the Ganga water from the sky.) What I believe is, Shri Krishna, Balarama and Pradyumna are capable of facing all the three worlds.

With the extinguishing of the fire, Garuda, the king of birds, forcefully moved his wings and forcefully advanced further creating tumultuous sound.

Finding them there, the servants of Rudra were surprised. They started thinking, ’’What for have the valorous persons with different forms, arrived here. Who are these three persons?”

Thus the servents of fire were raoming about over the mountain, could not arrive at a definite conclusion. Therefore all of them started war with all the three of them.

The servents of fire, engaged in war, tumultuous sound like the lion’s roar. Like the roaring of the lion sound so created by then the intelligent Angira sent one of his gurad to them.

They said to him, “you go at once at the place of war and then return at once after observing them.” Thus speaking they anxiously sent a guard there.

He said, very well and going to the battle ground, the guard saw in the great battle ground, lord Vasudeva, entangled in the forest arrows.

All of them were the Jataveda-agni and were known by the names of Kamasa, Kusuma, Dahana, Sasana and the valorous tapana. There are said to be the five forms of Agni with svahakara.

Besides them the fire god was also standing with his attendants known by the name of Pithara, Patarxa, Svarna, Svagadha, and Bhraja. All the five of them depending on Svadhakara are known as Agni. Agni too was fighting there.

Besides them, two forms of glorious Agnis known as Jyotistoma and Vibhaga and living in the hermitage of Vasatkara, were also fighting there.

In between then, the main Agni was the sage Angira, who mounted over the fire chariot, holding a bright arrow in his hand was illuminating the battle ground.

Angira, who was in anger, while shooting the sharp arrows, was addressed by Shri Krishna smilighly.

“O Agnis, all of you should keep on standing. I shall soon create danger for you. You shall flee to all the directions when reduced to ashes with my weapon.” On hearing this Angira, holding a bright trident in his hand on the battle field, attacked Shri Krishna as if to kill him.

Shri Krishna, then using the shining crescent arrows which were cruel like Yama, and were killers like Yama, destroyed the trident.

Thereafter lord Shri Hari, took up the horrible Sthiinakarna arrow and struck it at the chest of Angira.

The entire body of Angira was soaked in blood. His body became stiff and he fell down on earth getting nervous.

Thereafter the rest of the Agnis who are the four sons of Brahma, carried him to the city of Banasura.

Thereafter Shri Krishna, reached closer to the city of Banasura. Observing Bdnapura from a distance, Narada said.

О valorous Shri Krishna, look here this is the city of Sonitpur, where lord Rudra lived with the goddess Rudranl. For the protection and welfare of Banasura, Karttikeya also lives here.

On hearing the words of Narada, Shri Krishna laughed and said, “O great sage, you now listen to my words and think over them. In case lord Rudra arrives here for the protection of Banasura, then we shall fight with him as well as per our strength.”

When Shri Krishna and Narada were so engaged in talk, when all of them riding over Garuda reached there (in the city) in no time.

Thereafter Srf Krishna blew the couch with his mouth. At that time, it appeared as if some cloud was vomiting out the moon with the force of the wind.

Thus blowing the couch, creating terror in the minds of the opponents, Shri Krishna entered the city of Banasura the performer of the wonderful deeds.

Then inspired with sound of the couch as well as the playing of the kittledrums, the armies of Banasura got ready wearing the coats of arms.

Thereafter, Banasura, feeling panicky of the war, commanded his soldiers, who were crores in number and who held the bringht weapons.

The vast and innumerable army, standing at one place appeard like the clouds in the sky, the colour of which resembled the heap of collyrium. It was beyond measure and beyond destruction.

The army comprised of the Daityas, Danavas and Raksasas who held the bright weapons in their hands. All the pramathas of Siva also arrived there and started fighting along with Siva — the eternal.

Because of the holding of the bright weapons in their hands, the appeared like the fire with flames. The horrible Yaksas, Raksasas and Kinnaras collected in the battle field from all the sides and surrounded Shri Krishna, Balabhadra, Pradyumna and Garuda, with the desire of drink their blood.

The valorous Balabhadra, the destroyer of the enemy army, finding that the army of Banasrua was approaching him, spoke to Shri Krishna.

«O Krishna, О valorous one, you create some great danger for them.” Having been thus inspired by Balabhadra, Shri Krishna, the best among the shooters of the weapons, held the fire arrow in his hand for the killing of the enemy. At that point of time, looked awful like Yama.

With the lustre of his weapon, Shri Krishna destroyed the flesh eating asuras and anxiously reached the place where the demon army had taken their position.

All the warriors resembling the clouds and the mountains, taking to many forms, and mounted over the horrible looking vehicles had taken there position collectively in groups.

The majority of the soldiers were carrying the strong bows, were spread in far and wide like the clouds scattered with the wind. The place looked quite charming.

The innumerable army of soldiers, looked fine from all the sides holding the miisalas, swords, spears, clubs, parighas and other weapons.

Then Samkarsana said to lord Madhusiidana, “O valorous Krishna, О Purusottama, the army which is visible, I would like to fight with it in the battle field.

Shri Krishna said: I have also thought like that. Thus speaking, he again said to him, “O brother, I would like to fight with these warriors in the battle ground. Facing east, Garuda, should move ahead of me. Pradyumna should be on the left and you remain on the right. In this terrific war we have to protect one another.”

Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, thus talking between themselves, mounted over Garuda — the excellent bird, all the three of them started fighting. They fought with the clubs which were awful like the mountains, musala and the plough, the form of Balabhadra, then became so horrible resembling the form of the god of death at the time of dissolution, who gets desirous of putting to ashes all the creatures.

The immensely powerful Balarama, who was specialist in waging the war in the war ground, started roaming about everywhere in the battle ground. He dragged the enemies with the forepart of the plough and killed them with his club.

Then the valorous Pradyumna — the lion among the humans, covered all the demons with the arrows shot by him, from all the sides.

Janardana having the lustre like the heap of the slipprery mount of collyrium, holding the couch, cakra, and the club in his hands, kept himself waging the war, blowing the couch repeatedly.

Then the intelligent Garuda, the son of Vinata, tore out several of the demons with his beak and the claws. Several of them were wounded by him with the attack of his wings and despatched them to the abode of Yama.

When the Daitya army was so attacked from all the sides, the soldiers lost their feet and became nervous. The entire army was injured with the shooting of the arrows.

When the entire army started thus fleeing, then the fever named Trisira arrived there in order to protect the army. He had three feet, three heads, six arms, and nine eyes. The ashes served as the only weapon with him. He appeared awful like Kala, Antaka and Yama. When he uttered a lion’s roar, he appeared like thundering of the thousands of clouds together. His rumbling resembled the one of vajra.

He were breathing heavily again and again, twisting his body, His body appeared as having been over powered with sleep. He moved round and round again and again and his face appeared nervous with pain.

His hair stood erect. The eyes and the sense organs were getting dissolved. His face appeared nervous with pain. Having been filled with rage he spoke to Haladhara with contempt.

“Why are you getting intoxicated with prowess like this? Do you not find me in this battlefield? Keep on standing you cannot escape alive in this battle today.”

Thus speaking, laughing aloud, Trisira attacked over Haldhara Balarama. He was creating terror with the use of his fists.

Then Balarama — the son of Rohini, who changed his positions in the battle a thousand times, was wandering rapidly. Therefore he could not spot Balarama so easily.

Then the extremely powerful fever swiftly threw the ashes over Balarama, which struck over the chest of his gigantic body.

The ashes then fell over the Meru mountain (getting separated from his chest) and with the fall of the ashes there the entire mountain was in flame and they tore out the peak of the mountain.

Whatever part of the ash fell over the chest of Balarama, he started burning with the same. He started breathing deeply twistng his body. His body was over powered with sleep.

He expressed anxiety repeatedly from his eyes. He felt thrilled. Burning sensation was felt in his eyes as well as over his entire body. Feeling disgusted he started breathing heavily.

Feeling dis-spirital and disguested, Balarama, said to Shri Krishna, “O Krishna, О valorous one, I am burning. Remove my suffering О excellent one, I feel burning sensation over my entire body. How shall I feel peaceful?”

At these words of illustrious Baladeva, Shri Krishna, who had been an attacker always, said with a smile”, О brother, donot be afraid,” thus speaking, Sr! Krishna embraced Haladhara. After this, he was atcnce relieved of the burning sensation of his body.

Relieving Balarama of the burning sensation caused by the fever, the son of Vasudeva was immensely enraged and he said to the fever.

Shri Krishna said: “O Jvara — you come here and fight with me. You better display you full competence and prowess before me, in this great battle.”

At these words of Shri Krishna, the powerful Jvara, threw the ashes with both his arms raising up and with great force, in which the fire flames were enshrimed.

With the fall of the ashes, the body of Shri Krishna got into flames for two gadis. But then suddenly the fire was extinguished of its own.

Then Trisira, with his three serpent like arms, attacked the neck of Shri Krishna and administred a fist over his chest.

(Then Shri Krishna started beating the Jvara.) Both of them engaged themselves in a wrestling fight, the sound of which appeared like the falling of lighting over the montain peaks, producin sound.

Both Shri Krishna and Jvara were fighting with their arms a terrific battle. The people standing there observed, ’’Not like this, the battle should be fought like this”. These words were uttered quite aloud. Thus both the valorous warriors become bitter for two ghadis.

Then lord Jagadisvara who had appeared in human form, then lifted the body of the Jvara adorned with all the ornaments and who roamed in the sky. At that point of time it appeared as if the lord of the universe would put an end to the entire universe.

Here ends chapter — 122, of the Visnu Parva of the Harivamsa Purana, a supplementary of the epic of the Mahabharata, relating to the battle between the Yadavas and the demon army. (Vrs. 1-93, P.T. = 10306)
