Birth of Samba and narration of Shri Krsn’s glory by Narada





Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, the suicidal Sambasura, when abducted Pradyumna, in the same month Samba was born out of the womb of Jambavatl.

Balarama had imparted training to Samba in the use of weapons since his childhood. It was therefore Samba alone, who could handle weapons like him. Because of this all the people of Vrsni race honoured Samba.

After the birth of Samba, Shri Krishna, killing his enemy rulers, started living in the auspicious city of Dvaraka, as one lives in the Nandanavana of Indra.

Observing the wealth of the people of the race of Vrsni Vansa, Indra started feeling jealous of them. Being afraid of Shri Krishna, the enemy kings always felt restive.

Once, all the rulers of the world assembled at Hastinapur, to participate in the yajna organised by Duryodhana.

Learning about the enormouns wealth of the people of Vrsni - Variisa, besides the city of Dvaraka lodge in the mid-ocean by Krishna with his sons, through their messenger, the other rulers were desirous of entering into in agreements with Shri Krishna, in order to have a look at the riches of the Yadavas. For this purpose all the rulers arrived at the place of Shri Krishna.

Then Duryodhana, who lived under the command of Dhrtarastra, made Dhrstadyumna and other rulers, Pandya, Colas, Kalinga, VahnXka, Dvavida and the Khasa countries accompanied with eighteen aksauhni army, reached the city of Dvaraka which was protected by the arms of Shri Krishna. The rulers were led by the Pandavas.

All the rulers, surrounding the city of Dvaraka from all the sides in an area of a yojana on each side and camped there.

Thereafter the lotus eyed Hrisikesa, came out of the city with the foremost of the Yadavas and met the rulers there.

Madhusudana — while sitting with those rulers, appeared like the sun of the winter season.

Shri Krishna welcoming all the guests appopriately, making them occupy the appropriate seats, then graced his own lion throne made in gold.

Thereafter all the rulers also were seated over their own respective seats appropriately.

Shri Krishna then appeared like the rulers looking graceful in the assembly headed by the four faced Brahma.

In the royal assembly there, the Yadavas and other rulers started talking in presence of Shri Krishna and their talk was heard by the lord.

At the same time, the forceful wind thundering like the clouds, started blowing. The day was filled with darkness, the lightening started creating thundering sound.

Then tearing out the clouds, Narada appeared out of the clouds. He had well arranged all the matted locks of hair on his head. He held a Veena in his hand.

He was quite deep like the ocean and was resplendent like the fire flames. The illustrious Narada was the friend of Indra. He descended among the rulers seated there.

With his descent on earth, the darkness was over, which was caused by the clouds in the sky.

Narada, who was of very serious nature like the deep ocean, etnered the assembly of rulers, and spoke addressing Shri Krishna.

O valorous one, it is surprising that you are only Purusottama for the gods. You are graceful. No one else in the world could be compared with you.”

At these words of Narada, Shri Krishna smilingly said to him, “I am graceful with the daksinas besides being a surprise.”

At these words of Shri Krishna, Narada, the best of the sages, thus spoke in the assembly of the rulers, “Shri Krishna, I have received the full answer of my talk. Now I shall depart in the same way as I had reached here.”

Finding the sage Narada so departing, the rulers then spoke to Shri Krishna, since they were unable to understand the meaning of his words.

О Madhava, Narada has turned you as graceful as well as astonishing and you have associated yourself with the daksinas, in reply to the words of Narada. Inspite of all this we have not understood the meaning of it. What is the meaning of this passage. 0 Shri Krishna, in case it is worth revealing, then you kindly enlighten us about the truth of the same.”

Then lord Krishna spoke to all the best of of the rulers, who had assembled their, «O Rulers, in case you are intersted to known the meaning of the passage, then it would be better, if Narada himself speaks on the subject.”

Thus speaking Shri Krishna then addressed Narada thus, «O Narada, whatever have you talked to me, and the reply that was given by me, the rulers are anxious to know the secret of the same. Therefore you please enlighten them on the issue.”

At this, Narada seated himself over a golden seat appropriately. He was adorned with the best of ornaments then he started revealing the truth of the passages spoken by him as well as Shri Krishna.

Narada said: О Rulers, who have arrived here in large numbers, you listen to me as to how I could reach the limit of the glory of Shri Krishna. I am going to reveal the same.

Once I was wandering alone over the bank of the Ganga after performing Sandhya thrice in the day, once when the night was over, and the sun rose, then I found a tortoise there, which looked, like the mountain peak. Its body was made of two human heads joined together. It was spread in an area of a kosa in circumference. The length was double than the width. It had four feet. It was drenched vyith water and was covered with mud. It looked like my Veena. It appeared like the heap of the elephant skin.

Touching the aquatic animal with my hand, I said, “O tortoise, your body is astonishing. I feel you are graceful.

Because you possessing the impregnable skulls, without caring for anyone, freely move in the water.

Then the aquatic tortoise himself spoke to me in human voice, “O sage, what is wonderful in me? How am I graceful?

Graceful or wonderful indeed is the sacred river Ganga. There is nothing more wonderful than the river Ganga, in which thousands of creatures like me find the abode.

Out of curiosity, I went to the bank of the river Ganga and said, “O Ganga the best of the rivers, you are graceful and are also wonderful always, because the huge aquatic creatures find an abode in you. You have several Kundas and flow towards the ocean, serving several of the ascetics and their hermitages.”

At these words so spoken by me, Ganga appeared before me in a divine form and spoke to me, being of Deva-Gandharva race, and the intimate friend of Indra.

О Deva-gandharva, donot speak like this. Donot speak like this, О best of the Brahmanas, fond of conflicts and qurrels, I am neither graceful nor wonderful with the aquatic animals.

You are a truthful great sage and your words cause obstruction to me. О Brahmana there is the ocean alone which is surprising and graceful in the world, in which hundreds of rivers like me fall.”

Listening to the words of the Ganga as spoken by her, I went to the ocean and addressed to him, “O great ocean, you are wonderful and graceful in the world, because you are the lord of the water.

All the rivers of the worlds which carry auspicious water with them fall in you. They are worshipped the world over as your wives. Therefore it is quite proper that you are so called.”

At this talk of mine, the ocean, which is inspired with the wind, tearing out his vast treasure of water and stood up and then said to me.

“O Devgandharava, you should not speak like this. Not so, О best of the Brahmanas, I am not so wonderful. О sage, this earth is graceful, over which I am lodged. There is nothing so wonderful in the world as the earth is.”

At these words of the ocean, I stood over the earth and becoming curious, spoke to her being the base of the univese.

О support of all, you are the womb of all the living beings. Therefore you are graceful. You possess the element of great forgiveness, you are wondeful among all the bhutas.

Therefore you are surely the support of all the living beings and are the place for the birth of the people. The element of forgiveness has been born out of you. The activities of those who fly in the sky are also established by you.”

With the words of praise so spoken by Narada — the goddess earth got agitated. Leaving a side her patience she spoke to me bluntly.

“O deva-gandharva you are fond of war and quarrels and as such you should not speak like that. Donot speak like that. I am neither wonderful nor graceful. The forgiveness found in me, does not belong to me, but it belongs to others.

О best of Brahamanas, graceful one the mountains, bear my burden, They look so wonderful. They are the grace of the world.”

At the words so spoken by the earth, I was imprssed by them, I then appeared before the mountain and said, “O mountain, you are graceful and wonderful in many ways.

The precious stones and metals like gold emerge from you. You are known as the mine of minerals. You are the abode of so many wonders. The gold, the best of pearls, particularly the metals are found in you, and people therefore call you the mine of metals. You always remain on earth.”

On hearing my words, the mountain, the best in the producing of the metals and the stationary padarthas, spoke to me assuring words.

O Brahmarsi neither are we graceful nor do we have any surprise with us. In fact Brahma — the Prajapati is graceful. He is also wonderful among the gods.

Then I went to Prajapati Brahma and found the reality about the words spoken by the mountain. He is also full of many wonders among the gods.

Thereafter I went to the four faced Brahma, who is the creator of the universe and offered my salutation to him lowering my head. I stood before him in order to eulogise him.

Aftere praying him, in order to conclude my talk, I said to Brahma, born of lotus, “O lord you are the only wonderful god, you are graceful and the preceptor of the universe.

I do not find any other bhuta comparable with you. This mobile and immobile world had been created by you.

О lord of all the gods, all he bhutas and the gods in the universe, Danavas and the humans, found on earth, have all been born out of you. One can conclude this after observing the entire universe.

Therefore you are surely the primordial and eternal lord of gods, because you happen to be their creator and the initial cause of all the lokas.”

Then the Grand sire Brahma said to me, “O Narada, what is the wonderful and grace found by you in me?

О Narada, the Vedas are the biggest wonder of the world, because the vedas display the truth the tattvas and hold all the lokas.

О excellent Brahmana, Rk, Sama, and the truth of yajurvaveda, besides the truth of the Atharvaveda, you should consider the same as my form. It is the Vedas who hold me up, while I hold them.

Then I thought about Brahma, on the lines spoken by him and the Vedas.

With the words of the selfborn Brahma, I presented myself before the Vedas and their commentries and said to them.

“You are quite graceful and auspicious, besides being wonderful always. You are the base of the Brahmanas. This is what has been stated by Prajapati.

The self born Brahma also holds the opinion that you happen to be the best of all. There is none else so comparable among Srutis and tapas, with you.”

Then all the four Vedas stood up and addressed me thus, “O Narada, the yajnas which are performed to please the great soul are wonderful and graceful.

О Narada, the Almighty had produced us for the performing of the Yajnas. Therefore, the yajnas are the best in the world.

Then influenced with the words of the Vedas, I spoke to the yajnas, “O Yajnas, your appear to be the best and resplendent.”

Besides the words spoken by Brahma and supported by the Vedas, according to them, there is nothing so wonderful on earth comparable with you.

You are graceful belonging to the race of Brahma. All of you getting gratified, satisfy the three types of fires. It is during the performing of the yajnas that all the gods receive their share while the flsis get satisfied with the reciting of the hymns.”

At these words spoken by me, all the yajnas like Agnistoma and others spoke to me.

“O sage, the words graceful or wonderful are not suited for us. Lord Visnu himself is the wonder, because he happens to be our final abode.

The part of homa, which is poured into the fire and is shared by us it is bestowed on us by lord Visnu alone.

According to the words of the Vedas, I in order to achieve the abode of Visnu have arrived here on earth. But I could have an audience with Shri Krishna, who is surrounded by you.

О Rulers, whatever has been spoken by me about Shri Krishna, that “O Janardana, you are wonderful and graceful.” and he is present among you here.

He has replied to my quetion today that he is graceful with daksinas.” I have thus received a reply to my question.

Because it is Visnu with daksina who is the support of all. Therefore with the uttering of the words, “with daksina” I got the appropriate reply from the lord.

Earlier the tortoise had started discussion on gracefulness, which concluded on the basis of the tradition on Shri Krishna with daksina. Therefore I have got the reply as to who was graceful.

All of you who had enquired about the interpretation of my earlier passage, I have given a reply about the same. I shall now return as I had arrived.

With the departure of Narada to the heaven, all the rulers present there were surprised and returned to their kingdoms with their respective armies, feeling surprised.

Thereafter lord Janaradana, who delighted the race of Yadus, retired to his palace with warriors of the Yadu race who were shining like the fire.
