О Naresvara, I shall describe wonderful life story of Lord Visnu who is extremely valorous, popular, large hearted and benevolent you better listen to me attentively.

While living in Dvaraka the intelligent Shri Krishna — the lion of the Yadu race, disturbed the kingdom of the prominent rulers.

During those times, there was a Danava named Vicakra, who was always in search of the shortcomings of the Yadavas. Shri Krishna killed him. Thereafter, he going to the Pragjyotispura, killed the Danava known as Naraka entring the ocean.

Once Shri Krishna defeating Indra in the battle forcibly took away the Parijata tree. Similarly he defeated lord Varuna in Loahitahrad.

Dantavaktra was the king of Kurusa country, who was killed by Shri Krishna in Daksinapatha. After completion of a hundred sins, he also killed Sisupala.

О Maharaja, Bana was the son of the powerful Daitya king Bali, had a thousand arms. Besides he was fully protected by lord Siva. But lord Krishna reaching Sonitapura, defeated Bana in the great war, but left him alive.

He got Jarasandha killed and freed all the rulers who had been imprisoned by him. He kidnapped the princes of Gandharva, using a single chariot.

The Pandavas had been deprived of their kingdom and were feeling defeated. Lord Krishna protected them under those conditions. The terrific Khandava forest of Indra, was destroyed by him with the help of Arjuna.

Then he handed over the Gandlva bow presented to him by the fire god, to Arjuna for his use. During the conflict with the Kauravas and Pandavas, he served as a messenger of the Pandavas to the king Dhrtarastra.

The best of the Yadu’d race, expanded the Yadava race and took a vow before Kunti that he would return all the Pandavas to her safely after the Mahabharata war.

It was he who relieved the immensely illustrious king Nrga of the terrific curse. He destroyed Kalayavana through Mucukunda.

He defeated the terrific monkeys, named Maindya and Dvivid, besides Jambvan — the lord of the bears in the battle.

Chapter 116

The story of Banasura

Janamejaya said: O best of the learned sages, I have listened to the unparallel performhnce of the intelligent, valorous Vasudeva Krishna, the lion among the people of the Yadava race, once again briefly.

О great ascetic, you had earlier mentioned about Banasura and I want to listen to the relevent story in detail.

O Brahmana how could the asura have the fatherly affection, of lord Siva, because of which lord Siva himself protected him. Not only that even Skanda and other Siva- ganas also protected him.

The valorous Banasura was the eldest of the hundred sons of powerful Daitya king, Bali and had thousands of arms, which carried several types of weapons in them.

He had a gigantic body and was always surround by hundreds of valorous demon warriors. Still getting desirous of war, and filled with rage he arrived in the battlefield. Then how could he be defeated by lord Vasudeva? Then why was he left alive? ”

Vaishampayana said: O king, you listen to the manner in which the great war between Shri Krishna and Banasura was fought on earth, attentively.

In this war, Banasura was aided by lord Siva and Skanda, but still Banasura was defeated by Shri Krishna, but was left alive.

Lord Siva had bestowed a boon on Banasura to always remain close to him and had established him over the position of Ganapati. The way the battle was fought by Banasura, and he and the way Shri Krishna, left him alive after his defeat, the way Banasura earned the fatherly affection of Mahadeva, the reason for the waging of the war, you listen from me all the relevant details.

Once upon a time, Banasura — the son of the Daitya king Bali, felt surprised at the beautiful body of Skanda.

Then he develop an idea for performing a difficult tapas for lord Siva. His only intention was to become a son of lord Siva.

Thereafter he started melting his body with the performance of the severe tapas. He felt proud of his tapas as well. He thought that he was the only performer of the great tapas. Then lord Siva felt pleased with his tapas together with Parvati.

Feeling extremely pleased with him, the blue throated lord said to him, «O Bana, let you meet with welfare. You ask for a boon you desire.

Then Bana said to Mahesvara — the lord of gods, «O three eyed lord, I intend to be a son to you and Parvati.”

The lord Siva the said, “Be it so”. Then he spoke to Parvati, “O goddess, you accept him as your son. He shall be the younger brother of Karthikeya.

The place of Rudhirpura where Agnikumara Mahasena was born, the same place will be his capital city. There is no doubt about it.

The excellent city shall be known by the name of Sonitapura. No one would be able the bear the force of Banasura, who will be protected by me.

Thereafter Banasura, while living at Sonitapura, kept on ruling his country. He always disturbed all the gods.

Then the thousand armed Banasura getting arrogent of his strength and prowess, considered the gods to be of no consequence, and picked up conflicts with each one of them.

Karthikeya, who had also been pleased with Banasura, gave him an illustrious banner besides a peacock as his vehicle which was resplenent like the fire.

Then Mahadeva — the god of gods, protected him with his prowess,as a result of which, none of the gods, Gandharvas, or the Yaksas could face him.

Thus having been so protected by the three eyed Siva, the great asura was filled with arrognace and kept on trying to get an opportunity for the waging of the war. Once he went to lord Siva, the holder of a trident.

Reaching before the bull-banned Rudra, he offered salutation to him, Bana — the son of Bali spoke to him.

«O lord, under your protection, I, getting intoxicated and arrogant have defeated the gods, with Marudganas, several times.

They feel digusted and feel hopeless in defeating me. But they are afraid to get defeated from me again. Therefore, they reaching this city of that they shall live comfortably here.

Besides going to the heaven at my command, they live there also with comfort. Therefore I have been fed up with the waging of the war. Now in the absence of war, I have no desire to live on earth.

In case, I do not get a chance of waging a war, then there is no use of my carrying the burden of a thousand arms. Therefore you tell me, whether, there is any possibility of my facing a war in future. I donot feel happy without any war. Therefore you be graceful on me.”

On hearing this, lord Vrsabhadhvaja (Bull-banned) laughed aloud and thus spoke, “O Banasura, you listen from me, the way, you shall have to face the war.

О excellent one, when the flag which has been established by bow will fall, then you shall have to face war.”

At these words of lord Siva, the face of Banasura blossomed with delight. Feeling blissful, he started laughing aloud. Then falling at the feet of lord Siva, he said.

O lord, it is a matter of great fortune, that may carrying the burden of those thousand arms, would not be infructuous. Fortunately I shall again be able to defeat the thousand eyed Indra in the battle ground.

Thus speaking, Bana — the destroyer of the enemies was over whehned and the tears of joy started rolling from his eyes. Then he adored lord Siva with five hundered handcups again and fell over his feet on earth.

Isvara said: О valorous one, get up, with your arms, you shall face such a war which would be appropriate to your family and would be beyond compassion.

Vaishampayana said: О king, at these words of lord Tryambaka, the delighted Banasura, offered his salutation to the bull - bannered Siva.

Thereafter, getting leave of lord Nllakantha, Banasura who had been victorious over the enemy cities, returned to his abode, where, there was a vast chamber of flags.

Seated there smilingly, Bana said to his minister Kumbhanda, «O minister, I shall convey to you a pleasent news, which will appeal your mind.”

At these words, of Banasura, Kumbhanda who displayed excellent bravery in the battle, said, “what is the matter, О king?” What is the pleasent news which is going to be spoken by you?

Your eyes are blossoming you are speaking with delight, I want to listen from your mouth, as to what type of boon has been achieved by you from lord Siva as well as Skanda, by their grace?

О great asura, you tell me, as to what type of boon has been achieved by you by the grace of lord Siva and Skanda, with their protection. You tell me.

Has lord Sulupanl bestowed on you the kingship of the three worlds? Shall lord Indra, feeling panicky of you move to the neither world?

Will you be free from the danger of lord Visnu — the son of Did?” Will the great asuras depending on your strenght, leaving the nether world, live in the heaven.

О king, will your father — the king Bali, who in bondage because of the prowess of lord Visnu, getting relieved of the oceanic water, again rule the three worlds?

О excellent one, shall we witness your father — the Daitya king Bali the son of Virocana, wearing again the divine garlands, divine costumes, divine flowers, divine fragrance, and the divine pastes?

О lord, shall we get back the three worlds, which had been usurped by Visnu with three steps?

Shall we be able to conquer the victorious Narayana Deva, whose speech echoes like the thunder of clouds, who is preceeded by the blowing of the couch, with force.

О excellent one, had the bull-bannered lord Siva, been gracefully pleased with you? What type of shaking is found in your heart and the eyes are dropping the blissful tears. Observing them one can visualise the above situations.

Has, with the patience of lord Siva and the advice of Karttikeya, some more wealth been found?”

Inspired with the talk of Kumbhanda, the Daitya king Bana spoke with firm voice.

Bana said: О Kumbhanda, I was unable to wage a war for a long time. Therefore, I enquired with delight from the blue throated lord.

«O Deva, I am getting desirous of waging a war. Shall I be able to face such a war, which might enhance my mental satisfaction.”

On hearing my words, lord Mahadeva — the destroyer of the enemy, laughed for sometime and then spoke pleasently, “O Banasura, you will have to face a great war which shall be unprecdented.”

O asura, the son of Diti, at the breaking of your peacock flag and its falling on the ground, then you will have an opportunity for waging a war.

I was then extremely pleased and offering my salutation to the bull - bannered Siva, I have arrived before you.”

At these woros of Banasura, Kumbhanda replied to the asura — king, “O king, from the words spoken by you, I realise, that the result shall not be happy.”

While both of them were so talking the high flag of Banasura, having been struck with the vajra of Indra, fell down with great force.

With the fall of the banner after breaking, Banasura was immensely pleased. He became sure that the time of war is about to arrive.

Thereafter the earth started shaking with the striking of the Vajra. The cat hiding in the earth started crying and thundering at the same time.

Indra, who happened to be the god of gods started showering blood on Sonitapura.

A huge planet passing through the solar disc fell on the earth. Inspired by the gods of his own side, the sun god, started teasing the BharanI constellation.

Hundreds of showers of blood started falling over the Caitya — Vrksas, which looked quite awful. The stars started falling from the sky.

О lord of the people, Rahu eclipsed the sun untimely. On the arrival of the time of destruction of the world, the Vajras started falling with great disturbance.

The comet stood towards the southern direction. The terrific wind started blowing without any obstruction.

The sun was enclosed by three types of circles. The edges the circles were of white and red colour but the one at the neck was of black colour, in which the lustre of the sun appeared like lightening. The sun with its lustre covered the redness of the evening.

Mars moving in the opposite direction halted in the krttika constellation and was in direction of danger. All of them were denouncing Rohini the birth constellation of Banasura.

The Caitya-tree with many branches which was worshipped by the intelligent girls of the Danavas was suddenly uprooted and it fell down on the ground.

Thus witnessing several types of calamaties, Banasura, becoming arrogant because of his prowess, was unable to arrive at a definite conclusion.

But the learned minister of Banasura, who was worldy wise, known as Kumbhanda, anticipating the evil effects of the bad omens was almost fainted.

Then he said, “О great asura, several evil omnes are being witnessed here, which are indicative of evil and not good. They will be instrumental in the distruction of your kingdom. There is no doubt about it.

О lord of the earth, because of your evil intentions, I with other ministers, your followers and the servents, will shortly face destruction.

Because of your own arrogance, the way, the caitya tree which touched the sky with its height, has fallen. Therefore, О Banasura, because of your arrogance, and confusion, your fall is sure to happen.

By the grace of lord Mahadeva, the demson king who conquered the entire universe the some asura king is going to fall because of his arraganec. This is the reason that you started thundering getting desirous of war.”

But Banasura was hardly bothered about the same. The extremely valorous asrua with a dellightful mind, started drinking wine with the Daitya and Danava women.

Kumbhanda, the minister, at that point of time, getting worried, went to the Raj Bhavna, and tried to interpret the different types of disturbances in relation to the tattvas.

He then started thinking in his mind, the great king of the asura has become arrogant. He has lost his wisdom. Becoming victorious repeatedly. He has become always desirous of war. Becoming arrogant with prowess, he does not find fault with the war.

The great calamities are indicative of the danger cannot be false could there be some method to avert this danger?

The three eyed lord Siva lives here, together with the valorous Karttikeya. Therefore the evil for us shall be turned into good.

With the appearing of these calamaties, it is evident that enormous killings are going to take place here. I firmly believe that these dangers cannot be averted.

The evil manners of the king would surely be the blemish for us there is no doubt about it. Because this blemish persists in all the Danavas.

The one who creates all the gods as well as the Danavas, besides being the lord of the Bhuvanas, the same lord Siva and Karttikeya, had established Sonitapura for Bana.

Skanda shall be dearer to lord Siva than his own life and with him, Banasura would also remain dear to lord Siva.

But because of the arrogance of his prowess, for his own destruction he received a boon from lord Siva. Becoming greedy for war, he would surely be deprived of his own existence.

In case lord Indra spreads like the clouds, led by lord Visnu, still the attack could be repulsed by lord Siva.

Lord Siva is always desirous to help Banasura. Then with the coming of Karttikeya to move in the fore front, who can fight with them?

(When he has indicated about the great war) then the war for the destruction of the Daityas shall surely be fought.

Thus getting absorbed in thought, Kumbhanda — the great asura and well - versed in the tattvas, diverted his mind for the cause of welfare.

Those who are envious of the auspicious gods or when the gods stand against them, they get destroyed as the king Bali was held in bondage.

Chapter 117

Story of Banasura-continued

Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, once the great influential lord Siva was engaged in sports with Parvati over the bank of Ganga.

At that point of time in the Sarvartaka vana, hundreds of other apsaras were also engaged in sports with Gandharvaraja.

The river bank and the sky was filled with the fragrance of Parijata and Santanak flowers, which are like kalpavrkasas.

The musical instruments like venu, Veena, double druma, Panavas and other hundred types of instruments issuing sweet sound was heard by them.

The apsaras, the siitas and magadas (bards) were singing in praise of the lord Siva. Lord Siva, the god of gods, wearing the garland of flowers, were clad in red garments. Lord Mahesvara had a beautiful form. All the apsaras worshipped lord Siva.

At the same time as apsara taking to the form of Parvati, started appeasing Mahadevl. The goddess Parvati started laughing aloud at the sight. The other apsaras also started laughing looking at Chitralekha.

The attendants of Siva, who had taken to many forms, were also engaged in sports at different places at the command of Parvati.

Then all the attendents, holding similar types of symbols and the banners, stood at several places. Then the apsaras also taking to the form of Paravati, started sporting with them (the attendants).

Finding this all the apsaras and the goddess Parvati also started laughing aloud. As a result of this the place was echoed with the sound of laughter.

At that point of time lord Siva felt immensely delighted. His mind was quite blissful. At that point of time, Usa the daughter of Banasura was also present there.

She found that Mahadeva was shining with resplendence comparable with twelve Adityas, who was engaged with sports with the goddess over the river bank.

He was sporting with the goddess taking to several forms. Finding this, Usa, resolved in the presence of Parvati, in her mind.

“Graceful is this lady who is thus sporting with her husband.” Usa repeated this resolve in her mind again.

Reading the mind of Usa, the goddess Parvati, delighting her mind slowly spoke.

О Usa, you will shortly sport with your beloved husband similarly, as lord Siva sports with me.”

At these words of the goddess, Usa closed her eyes thinking, “I know not when shall I get this fortunate opportunity. At that point of time she became desirous of early sporting with her husband.

Then the daughter of Himalaya spoke smilingly. “ О Usa, you listen to my words I shall let you know the time of your meeting with your husband.

On the twelth day of fortnight of the month of Vaisakha, in the evening time when you would be sleeping in the balcony, you will have union in sleep with someone. The same person would be your husband.”

At these words of the goddess, then the Daitya princess, who was surrounded by many Daitya girls, left the place. Then she started roaming about with comfort here and there.

Then all her female friends started joking with her. Her eyes were blossomed with delight started clapping their hands.

The kinnara girls, the Yaksa girls, the daughters of several Daityas, the daughters of apsaras, became friendly with Usa.

All of them then said to Usa, “O princess with charming face, now you are sure to shortly achieve a husband, as per the words of the goddess Paraval.

The words of the goddess can never be otherwise. He has created a husband for you who belongs to high race who would be beautiful.

Usa respected the words of her female friends appropriately and kept on thinking over the words of the goddess which were spoken by her, and kept on standing there.

Thereafter all the damsels, engarging the sports with Parvati, at the expiry of the day returned to their respective abodes. The goddess Parvati also disappeared from the scene.

Some of them left riding on horses, some seated in palanquine, some riding the elephants, while some of them left the place, riding over the chariots and entered the city. Some of them who were apsaras flew in the sky way and reached their abodes.

О magnaninous one, since that time Usa was infested with passion or lust. Having been reminded of the words of Paravati, she thought about her husband she became restless she could neither sleep during the night nor during the day. She could not also take her food.

The princes always thought of her husband and lamented in seclusion. She denounced the moon appearing in the sky. She did not like even the use of the sandal paste.

Having been overpowered with lust, the princess lost her senses. Though she was not suffering with fever, still taking her to be suffering with fever, they extended her treatment accordingly.

Inspite of the pasting of her body with the sandal pastes, her heart always remained burning. Her pink cheeks started developing white spots and yellowishness. Her eyes always were filled with tears.

She felt sleepy and her body was twisted frequently. Her female friends always applied the cool paste of lotus flowers in order to purify her passionate feelings. They moved the fan again and again and asked her.

О damsel, what ails you? How has your body been turned? What has happened to you? О goddess, О beautiful one, you tell us your liking.

О pleasent one, where from have you attracted this uncurable disease? Look here the mynaka speak the voice loveable to you. The extremely blue parrots are reading like the humans voice. Why are you not speaking the delightful words for them?

О youthful damsel your father is a great warrior. He is invincible from the gods. No one can stand before him on earth.

The immensely valorous Bana,.the son of Bali is completely invincible. He can defeat Amaravati with his influence of Sonitapura, where lord Mahesvara resides holding a trident in his hand.

О Usa, Lord Siva had commanded Parvati, to treat Banasura — your father as her own son.

What is painful to you? Drops of sweet are appearing over the tip of your nose as well as your face, in the same way as the due drops appear over the lotus flowers during the winter season.

Your face resembling the full moon, has been faded out like the moon covered with clouds, being lustreless. Why is it like this, you tell me?

О girl, you are having deep sighs, you do not appear delightful. What is the cause for the same? You take the divine food to your liking.

Earlier you had a liking for the betel leaf, but why dont you take it now. О goddess, you get up and consume the stuff which is beyond the reach of others. Tell me how do you feel painful.

Listening the voice in the palace of Usa, the slave girls, spoke to her mother variously.

О goddess, the chaste princess, after her return from the water sport, is keeping silent.

Therefore О chief queen, we the slave girls are reporting the matter to you. The princess seems to be in a delusion. Why is she keeping silent? What is the reason for it that she always keeps on sleeping? Why has she faded out. О goddess, you think over all this and depute physicians for the cure of her ailment.

О goddess, the body which is as soft as the sides (acacia) flowers, how could it face the ailment?

On hearing this, the goddess, who moved like a swan, became ansceious and she reached the place where Usa was sleeping. She asked, “What type of trouble has appeared to you?”

The chaste, chief queen, touched the hand of Usa with his own lotus like hand. Then she cracked her fingers unmindfully.

Then she asked her, “O virtuous one, what ails you? The physicians are arriving to enquire from you.”

The physicians said: “O chief queen, we are aware, that the princess had gone for water sport with her female friends, at a place, where the water sports of the goddess Parvati was going on. Became of her performance there, her tiresomeness had increased.

With the exertion one, feels fatigued. Because of that she is twisting her body again and again. Because of exertion, her limbs are feeling tiresome. She is sleeping because of the same. Therefore, you need not worry for the same.”

The chief queen said: О Physicians and the ministers, the sandal paste mixed with ice has been applied over the breast of the princess, but soon it starts boiling what is the reason for it? Why has it so happened?

She is having fever in her body and is sweating profusely. She feels thirsty very much, but has no inclination to eat anything. She is chattering variously. Why does she behave like this? You kindly enlighten me on the basis of the medical treatises.”

The Physician said: During the water sports many damsels had collected before lord Siva. The chaste Usa is quite beautiful. Therefore all the ladies cast a glance on her as a result of which she has attracted on evil eye. This is the cause of the suffering of your daughter. Therefore the princess should be protected with the protective mantras as well as with the use of white mustard seeds. She will feel extremely fine with the sprinkling of the sanctified water over her.

Thus speaking all the physicians returned from the palace. While leaving the palace, they also informed that she could be suffering with the pain of lust or passion.

Thereafter, the mother enquired again and again from Usa having beautiful limbs who spoke after a long time, crying aloud, “O mother, listen, I neither like to speak nor do I like to eat. I also donot feel interested in joining festivities. I always feel a burning sensation in my heart.” Thus speaking, the princess Usa kept quiet.

At that point of time all the ladies started looking at the faces of one another and talked among themselves that the youthful age is usually shameful for the ladies. This princess is also desirous of union with her husband. Therefore, what could be done for her? She should get a suitable husband, with the grace of his parents.
