Goddess Arya adored by Aniruddha and his release from the bondage





Vaisarhpayana said: О Janamejaya, when Aniruddha was taken captive in the city of Banapur, by the Daitya king Banasura, then he took mentally refuge with the Kotavatl — Devi for his own protection. The stotra which Aniruddha had recited at that time, you listen the same from me.

After bowing in reverence to the eternal lord who is beyond measure, and in­destructible, is lord of the universe being best of all, then I shall recite the praise the goddess Candi — bestower of the boons, also known as Katyayanl and Arya, who had also been praised by lord Hari.

The gods and the Rishis have adored the goddess offering flowers of speech, the one who is present in the bodies of all the human beings, who is adored by all the gods, I shall sing praise of the same goddess Arya.

Aniruddha said: The one who is the sister of Devardja Indra and lord Visnu, I bow in reverance to the same goddess for my own benefit, besides, with folded hands, getting purified, with the spotless clean heart, I intend to eulogise her.

She is the form of GautamI, frightening for Kariisa, delight of Yasoda, auspicious and born in Gokula, is the daughter of Nandagopa, I offer my salutation to the same goddess.

The one who is learned, form of welfare, beautiful killer of the Danavas, pervades in the bodies of all, and is adored by all the bhUtas. I offer my salutation to the same goddess Arya.

The one who is the strength for sight, fulfills the desirous of all, the form of Maya, possessing the lustre of the sun, moon and the fire, peaceful, indestructible, the mother of all, besides being MohinI as well as Sosani who is served by all the flsis and the gods, at whose feet all the gods, bow their heads in reverance, the one who is known as Kali, Katyayanl, is fearful besides being the remover of fear, I bow in reverance to her.

The one who is Kalaratrl, who can move at will at every place, having three eyes, besides being Brahmacarinl. The one who is the form of lightening, thunders like the cloud, Vetali, having a large face, I bow in reverance to the same goddess.

The one who is the prominent leader of the multitude, extremely fortunate and the forms of Sakuni, Revatl and other constellations, the sixth, fifth, fourteenth and full moon of the days of fortnights, besides the fourteenth day of the same, I bow in reverance to the same goddess.

The one who appears in forms of the twenty seven constellations, all the rivers, the ten directions, the one who is the established goddess of the towns, orchards, gardens and the balconies and lives in those forms, I bow in reverance to the same goddess Arya.

The one who is known as Hri, (shyness) Shri (fortunes), Ganga, Gandharva (Radha), Yogini and bestows Yoga to the noble people, I bow in reverance to the same goddess who is also known as Kirtl, Asa, Disa, Sparsa and Sarasvatl.

The one who is the mother of the Vedas, beautiful on her devoties, Savitri, Tapasvini (female ascetic), Ekanansa, form of eternity, I bow in reverance to the same goddess.

You dwell in hermitage, make other intoxicated, ferocious, Ita, dweller of the Malaya mountain, abode of all the bhUtas, ferocious one, Kusamandl and Kusumapriya. I bow in reverance to such a goddess.

Who is of terrific nature, whose dwelling place also makes one intoxicated, the one who has her abode over the Vindhya and Kailasa mountains, who is the best of the ladies, who has the lion as the vehicle, who can take to many forms, who has the flag embassed with the sign of a bull, I bow in reverance to the same goddess.

The one who frightened the demon Nisumbha, who was difficult to approach, was invincible, difficult to reach, is loved by the gods, the form of gods, holding Vajra in her hand, the younger sister of Indra, I bow in reverance to the same benevolant goddess.

She is the one who took to the form of a Kirati, is adored by the army of thieves, who consumes ghee, consumes soma-juice as well, having the pleasent form, is the dweller of all the mountains, I bow in reverance to the same goddess.

The one who is the destroyer of the demons Sumbha and Nisumbha, whose breasts look like a temples of the elephant, who is served by the Siddhas and Caranas, who is the mother of Karttikeya, from whom Kumara was born, who being the daughter of the mountain roams about everywhere, I bow in reverance to the goddess Parvati.

Out of the fifty divine girls, who are the wives of the gods, out of them Kadru has thousands of sons, the beautiful women with their sons and grand sons, their parents, the gods of the heaven, and the apsaras with the wives of the Rishis, those among the wives of Yaksas the Gandharvas Vidyadhara, besides the chaste human damsels, you resides in all of them as the univesal mother. Because you are the abode of all the bhiitas, all the lokas in the three worlds have bowed in reverance at your feet. The Kinnaras sing your praise aloud, and serve you.

You are unthinkable and beyond measure. I bow in reverence to you, whatever you may be. О daughter of GautamI, you are adored with the above as well as the other names.

О goddess with vast eyes, let me be free from the bondages, without any obstruction. Let your grace be showered on me. I take refuge at your feet. You are competent enough to free me of all the bondages.

Thus by reciting the name of the goddess, all the gods of the universe are adored viz:-Brahma, Visnu, Rudra, the moon, the sun, fire god, wind god, Asvini Kumara, Vasu, Visvedevas, Sadhyas, Marudganas, Parjanya, Dhata, Earth goddess, all the ten directions, group of constellations, planets, rivers, tanks, rivulets, oceans, Vidyad haras, Serpents, Nagas, Garuda, Gandharvas, groups of apsaras.

Those who recite this stotra of the goddess with a concentrated mind, they are granted the best of boon in the seventh month.

The goddess has eighteen arms, she is adorned with the divine ornaments. Her limbs are decorated with garlands. All her ornaments are gllittering with the rays of gems studded in her crown.

О Katyayani, I offer prayer to you. Therefore you bestow the best of boon to me. Therefore, О bestower of boons, I have offered my prayer to you.

О Mahadevi, salutation to you. You always remain pleased with me and bestow on me long life, strength and patience. I am lying in bondage. Let my desire to be free from it become truthful.

Vaishampayana said: О king, at the prayer so offered by Aniruddha the goddess Durga who displayed difficult strength reached the prison and appeared before Aniruddha.

The benevolent goddess, freed Aniruddha, (who had been kept in bondage by Banasura) for his benefit.

At the sametime, she assured Aniruddha, varriously at that point of time, the glorious Aniruddha, worshipped the goddess. The goddess displayed her grace on Aniruddha in the prison.

Aniruddha, who had been bound in the serpent noose and whose heart had been stolen by Usa, the goddess broke the vajralika cage with her fingers and freed Aniruddha who had been imprisoned in Banapur. They reassuring Aniruddha she spoke to him thus.

The goddess said: О Aniruddha, Shri Krishna the holder of cakra shall arrive here soon and free you completely from the bondage. Till that time, you bear the inconveniece for some time. Lord Shri Hari cutting the thousand arms of Banasura, shall carry you home.”

Thereafter Aniruddha - who had the face as charming as the moon, delightfully again offered his salutation to the goddess.

О Sadasiva, you always move at will, salutation to you. You always fulfil the desire of welfare of others and are affectionate to all, salutation to you. You always frighten the enemies, salutation to you. О goddess, you have freed me from the bondage, salutation to you.

O Siva, you are Brahma.nl, Indram, Rudranl, and form of present past and future. You save me from all the dangers. О Narayani salutation to you.

О adorable goddess, you are the protector of the world, salutation to you. You control the sense organs as well as the mind, О performer of the great Vrata, devotion is liked by you, О mother of the universe, О daughter of Himalaya — the king of the mountains, О earth goddess, having broad eyes, you better protect me. Salutation to you. О goddess, you frighten the Danavas, you save me from all the miseries.

О beloved of Rudra, you relieves your devotees of their sufferings, I offer my salutation at your feet bowing my head. You have freed me from the bondage, inspite of my being in capitivity.”

Vaishampayana said: The person who with a concentrated mind, recites this Arya- stotra getting purified, he is relieved of all the sins and in case he be in bondage, he is freed from the same. The words spoken by the sage Vyasa cannot be otherwise.
