Usa dream and departure of Citralekha to Dvaraka

Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, the beautiful women of Sopitpur, were expert in drawing paintings. Therefore on the bright twelth day of the month of Vaisakha, when Usa was sleeping in a balcony surrounded by her female friends, then during her sleep a person, as had been foretold by the goddess Parvati, had a union with the asura princess having the best of symptoms.

Though, she while crying, tried her best to г otect herself from him, but she was influenced with the words of Parvati. Therefore, the said person had a union with her with force, making her his wife.

At that point of time the vagina of the princess was filled with blood. She got up while crying in the night. Finding her so crying, Citralekha her hand maid, got frightened and spoke in wonderful sweet voice.

“O Usa, donot be afraid. Why are you so crying and grieving at the same time. You are the grand daughter of the king Bali and are well known for your out spokenness. Then why are you getting afraid?

О beautiful one, there is no fear for us and more particularly for you in the world. You need not be afraid of anyone. Bana, your father, is the death for even the god of death in the battle ground.

О auspicious one, you get up, let you meet with welfare. Donot feel disgusted. One does not have to be afraid in his own abode.

Indra, the lord of Saci, leading the army of the gods attacked several times but was unable to reach the city and your father trampled upon them in the battle ground.

Your father always frightens the gods and is the best of all the asuras. He is the illustrious son of the great Daitya king Bali.”

At these words of the hand maid, the unblemished daughter of Bana revealed the details of her dream to her.

Usa said: I had been a chaste virgin. When my chastity has been so destroyed, then how can I remain alive, what shall I speak to my father, who is the destroyer of the enemies — the gods.

I have blemished the great race of the asuras. It would be better for me to end my life. To remain alive would be of no use.

I found a man in the dream, whom I possibly loved very much. Actually I desired for him. He behaved with me in the dream, as if I had been awake.

I had been like awaking, but some one has reduced me to this position. Now how can I remain alive?

A damsel who had been the foremost among the chaste women, when becomes the fallen woman causing blemish to the race becoming shalterless, then she should have no hope for life.”

Thus Usa having been surrounded by the hand maids, having lotus like eyes, with her eyes filled with tears, kept on lamenting for long.

Finding her so weeping with her eyes filled with tears, all the hand maids, getting nervous, arrived there and said to her.

“In case something evil or good is done with an evil mind, then one has to face an evil result for the same.

Some one has forcibly united with you indream then your chastity has not been compromised.

О goddess, the performance of yours, cannot be taken as a sin. О beautiful one, any deed performed, on earth does not earn blemish in any way.

О goddess, the Brahmarsis, well-versed in dharma, speak like this. A women who is polluted by her action, thought or behaviour, the learned people call her sinful.

О shy girl, your mind is always stable. You are never found to be unstable. When you maintain your chastity regularly, then how could you earn a blemish.

You have pure intentions, your mind is under you control. But still in case you have reached in this condition in sleep, then you have not lost your chastity.

A woman having a blemished mind, she carried out the evil by her activity. She alone is called an unchaste woman. О damsel, you are chaste women.

You are born in the high race, have a beautiful body. You have patience and follow all the rulers, besides observing chastity. Still, you have to face such a situation. Observing this one has to say that the moves of the destiny can never be averted.

At these words of the hand maids, Usa kept on weeping and her eyes remained filled with tears. Then Citralekha — the daughter of Kumbhanda spoke excellently.

«O broad eyed damsel, shed away the grief. О beautiful one, you are absolutely sinless. I have heard the talk, which I am going to repeat truthfully.

О Usa, О beautiful one, in the company of lord MahacLeva — the god of gods, when you were thinking about your husband, you better recall the words spoken to you by the goddess Parvati.

She had said that on the twelth of day of the bright fortnight of the month of Vaisakha, during the night time, during your sleep, the one who shall forcibly unite with you in dream, inspite of your cries, the same valorous warriors, the destroyer of the enemies shall be your husband.

The goddess Parvati, having been filled with delight had spoken to you according to your liking. The goddess Parvati had clearly indicated, and her words cannot be otherwise. Therefore, О damsel with face like the moon, why are you crying so much over this incident.”

At those words of Citralekha, recalling the words of the goddess Parvati, the demon girl having pleasent eye known as Usa the daughter of Bana, was relieved of her grief.

Usa said: “O beautiful one, when lord Mahadeva was engaged in sports, the goddess ParvatPs word are well known to me. Whatever had been spoken by her, has been faced by me in this balcony.

In case Parvati the spouse of lord Visvanatha had bestowed the person as my husband, then how shall we know about him. Therefore, you make some efforts in this regard.”

At these words of Usa, Citralekha — the daughter of Kumbhanda who was well - versed in arthasatra again spoke appropriate words.

She said, “О goddess no one knows about the family of the person, nor about his glory or his prowess. Then why do you get confused on the issue?

О auspicious one, the person who has been seen by you in dream, has not been seen by anyone else, nor has anything been heard about him. Then how can we search for the person who has forced himself on you in dream.

О hand maid, with beaming eyes, looking like an intoxicated one, the person, who entering your inner apartment, forcibly united with you inspites of your cries, should not be an ordinary person. A person who usurped himself alone in the famous city with force, he could be an extremely valorous person and killer of the enemies.

The twelve Adityas eight Vasus, eleven Rudras, both the valorous Asvanikumaras are the terribly strong gods, who can never venture to enter the city of Sonitpur.

The alone mentioned, by multiplying a hundred times and arrived here, such person would be more powerful than them, who placing his foot over the head of Banasura entered Sonitpura.

О lotus eyed one, a damsel, whose husband is so powerful and well versed in war, what is the use of her life and the enjoyement of pleasure.

You are graceful the goddess Parvati is extremely graceful on you, that you have got such a strong husband resembling the god of love.

Whatever is the great task before us presently, you please listen from me. First of all you should know about his father, his name and the race in which he was born.”

At these word of Citralekha, the lustful Usa spoke to the daughter of Kumbhanda, “o hand maid, how can I know, all this?”

Therefore, О hand maid, you should make some efforts. I am unable to think of anything. All the people get confused in their tasks. Therefore you do something which could bestow new life in me.”

On hearing the words of Usa, her hand maid — the daughter of Kumbhanda known as Rama (and was also known as Citralekha because of her birth from Citralekha-an apasara) spoke to Usa, who had been sobbing.

О hand maid with vast eyes, you better communicate the position to Citralekha- the apsara. She would be competent enough advice you appropriately.

She is well aware of the happenings of the three worlds.” At the words so spoken by her, Usa felt extremely delighted at once, besides being surprised.

She summoned her intimate friend Citralekha — the apsara. and with all humility and folded hand, she narrated to her the cause of her suffering.

The hand maid Citralekha, learing the words of Usa, assured the glorious daughter of Bana.

Then the surprised Usa, addressing her hand maid Citralekha apsara, lovingly spoke the word which could be expressed with difficulty.

She said, “O graceful one, you listen to my words which are being spoken by me. My beloved husband is quite charming his eyed are beautiful like the blossomed lotus flowers. He walks slowly like the intoxicated elephant, О hand-maid with slender waist, in case you do not bring my beloved today itself, then I shall surely end my life.”

On hearing this, Citralekha, increasing the delight of Usa, spoke slowly. “O damsel, observing the best of vratas, I am unable to know you by anymeans.

О friend, you are totally unaware of the thief of your heart’s family, complexion beauty, or even the country.

Still I shall do whatever is possible with my wisdom. Presently I am going to speak out which is desirable and by which you will have your desire fulfilld.

I shall draw paintings as of the prominent people among the gods, Danavas, Yaksas, Gandharvas, Nagas and Raksasas, according to the glory of their respective families. I shall also draw the paintings of the prominent people on earth.

О excellent one, I shall prepare the paintings of all of them in seven nights and shall display them before you. On your recognition of your husband, you would find him at you feet.”

At the words so spoken by Citralekha for the establishment of the task, then Usa, said to her loveable hand maid, “very well,.you act accordingly”.

Then Citralekha said, “Be it so”. Then she prepared the paintings from all the sources appropriately, because she was quite competent in the art. In seven nights, she drew paintings of all the prominent persons. With the portraits of all of them drawn by her, she brought then before Usa.

Thereafter Citralekha spread the portraits drawn by her before Usa and her friends.

Then Citralekha said, “These are the portraits of the prominent gods and these are the portaits of the prominent Danavas. The protraits of Nagas, Kinnaras, Yaksas and Rdksas are arranged here. These are the portraits of Gandharvas, asuras, Daityas, and other serpents.

The portraits of the most prominent humans are displayed here. You have a look at all of them who have been portrayed by me.

You better recognise the person who is your husband and with whom you had an encounter in the dream.”

Then Usa who appeared as having been intoxicated, looked at all the portraits of the gods, Danavas, Gandharvas, and Vidyadhavas and the pictures of all the people of Yaduvamsa including Shri Krishna.

While coming across the portrait of Aniruddha, her eyes blossomed with wonder and she spoke to Citralekha, “O handmaid, this is the thief, who, while I was in sleep in the balcony, arrived in my dream and blemished me. I am well aware of his beauty, but the place from where this thief of my love had arrived, could not be known by me.

О graceful one, О Citralekha, you tell me correctly about him, the gentleman theif including his family, temperament, relatives and the name. I shall decide the future course of action, after knowing about him.

Chitralekha said: О damsel with broad eyes, your husband is the grand son of Shri Krishna — the lord of three worlds and is the son of Pradyumna. He has a terrific prowess to his credit.

No one can face him in strength in the three worlds. He can kill his enemies by throwing the mountains at the enemy after uprooting them.

You are graceful. The goddess is particularly kind to you, because of which the goddess has bestowed on you the gem of the race of Yadus known as Aniruddha. His anccestors were the best of the humans.”

Usa said: О beautiful damsel having the vast eyes, you alone are competent enough to establish this task. I cannot have anyother support than yourself. You therefore become the source for refuge for me.

You freely move in the sky and can take to any form at will as a Yoginl. You are also well aware of the means to be adopted for the establishment of the task. Therefore you rapidly get her my beloved.

О shy damsel, о beautiful one, you deeply think about the ways and means for my getting a union with my beloved and the way, you can return with success.

A person who is friendly during misfortune, is always praised by the learned people. О damsel with beautiful waist, I am suffeing from passion. Therefore you protect my life.

О auspicious one, in case you are unable to bring my god like husband here today itself, then I shall surely end my life by the evening.”

On hearing the words of Usa, Chitralekha said, “O aupicious one with an aupicious smile, О Usa, you first listen to me.

As the city of Banasura is well guarded from all the sides similarly, the city of Dvaraka is well guarded. Even the gods cannot enter it.

It had the gates made of iron. The secret entrance gate of the city is completely guarded. The princes of Vrsni race and other people of Dvaraka guard it.

The city was built by Visvakarma. The entire city is surrounded by the ocean, which serves as its moat. At the command of lord Padmanabha, the terrific guards protect the same.

The mountains serve as its rampart walls, the ocean is the moat for it. Its entry is through a fort. The city is surrounded by the seven mountain, housing the metals in them.

A stranger can never enter Dvaraka, therefore shed away the abduracy for getting Aniruddha here. You should think of your own safety as well as that of mine, besides your father.”

Usa said: “O hand maid, you can surely enter the city of Dvaraka making use of the power of your yoga. What is the use of talking to me? You listen to my firm resolve.

Unless I have a look at the moon like face of Aniruddha, I shall surely proceed to the abode of Yama.

О excellent damsel, a task is established with the deplayment of a competent messenger. In case you intend to keep me alive, then becoming my messenger you go to Dvaraka.

In case you are aware of my friendship and you have faith the words lovingly spoken by me, then you get at once my beloved him. I take refuge in you.

Even when the life is in danger, even if the race is distroyed, but the lustful and passionate damsels, hardly care for all these things.

One should always try his best for the performing of the task. This is the command of the scriptures. О damsel with vast eyes, you are fit enough to enter the city of Dvaraka. О shy damsel, I have praised you immensely. You better arrange for my meeting with my beloved.”

Citralekha said: О hand maid, your nectar like words have served as a praise for me. Your sweet words have compelled me to perform the task, look here, I shall now proceed to Dvaraka at once.

These words of Citralekha were unfortunate and fringhtening for the city of Dvaraka.” Thus speaking, Citralekha, who could move with the speed of the wind, disappeared from the sight.

Usa on the other hand, in the company of her hand maids, thinking of some evil kept on standing there but Citralekha, in the third muMrta disappeared from the city of Banasura.

In order to do good of her female friends, adoring the sages and the ascetics in her mind, Citraiekha, reached Dvaraka, which was protected by Shri Krishna.

She witnessed the city of Dvaraka from the sky which had high buildings and palaces resembling the sacred mountain of Kailasa.
