Terrific battle between Kubera and Anuhrada

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, the valorous brothers of Prahlada known as Anuhrada, disturbing the army of Yaksas, started fighting with Kubera — the god of riches.

Anuhrada the best among the asuras, getting enraged, started causing pain to Kubera with his soldiers.

The great asura with weapons could not tolerate the enemy standing in the war- ground. Then he taking up the bow in his hand caused huge massacre of the enemy army.

As the whirlpools appear in the great ocean at the time of dissolution, similarly the vast army, the churning like activity was carried out.

The earth was filled with the dead bodies of the gods and the demons, as it was covered with the huge mountain shattered at the time of dissolution.

The valley of the Meru mountain, having been covered with the blood started shining like the flower of Pldsa tree during the month of Vaisakha.

After the killing of the warriors, elephants and the horses, a stream of blood was flown, where the blood took the place of water. The terrific stream enhanced the kingdom of Yama.

The fat and refuse, appeared like the i thick mind. The entrails spreading looked j like the mass. The severed heads and headless trunks served as the fish of the river, the hair of the limbs served as the grass.

The vultures and swans were flying there. The peacocks and the cranes were sporting there. The fat like foam was spreading everywhere. The cries of the wounded and the rippling sound was emerging from all the four directions.

The great river flowing in the battle ground, was uncrossable for the cowards, excatly in the same way as the river in flood during the rainy season is difficult to be crossed by anyone. The swans and other birds added to its glory.

But the gods and the Danavas crossed the said rivers, as the lotus pond is crossed by the huge of elephants.

Anuhrada, seated over the chariot, showering the rain of arrows was forcefully destroying the Yaksas army. This was witnessed by Kubera himself.

Then as the wind forcefully shatters the huge clouds, similarly the enraged Kubera - the god of wealth, also killed a large number of Daityas.

Observing the terrific war, Anuhrada then attacked the sun like the illustrious chariot of Kubera.

The Daitya who was the foremost of the archers, stretched his bow at the start of the battle ground, shot sharp arrows at Kubera - the lord of riches.

The arrows so shot by the Daitya, reaching before Kubera, struck his body from one side and emerged from the other side through his body, wounding other Danavas and Yaksas at the same time who were engaged in war.

The arrows burning like the fire which were quite sharp, injured Kubera in that war who felt-enraged, and advanced to face Anuhrada.

The enraged Kubera, surrounded by the Yaksas, started shooting rain of arrows over the Danava.

As a Bull quietly bears the sudden pouring of rain in the winter season closing its eyes, being unable to stop it, similarly the great asura, quietly tolerated the rain of arrows showered by Kubera over him.

The great asura though getting enraged with the heavy shower of the rain of arrows by Kubera on him, he was least disturbed. Then he spotted a huge tree resembling the rainbow. The branches of the tree were exceedingly long. Fresh shoots and foliage were sprouting from the tree besides being laden with fruits. The enraged Daitya uprooted the tree and threw it over the best of the steed of Kubera.

Observing his terrific performance, all the prominent asuras felt delighted with Anuhrada, who uttered a loud lion's roar.

Then a fierce battle started between the Daitya Anuhrada and Kubera. The eyes of both of them got red in anger. Both of them were attacking each other with terrific weapons in order to kill each other.

All the gods thundered aloud killing the Danavas. Similarly the enraged Daityas too killed a large number of gods.

The Danavas, getting enraged shot terrific arrows which wounded the gods.

Getting injured by the Daityas the valorous gods, getting immensely enraged, started fighting the war fearlessly.

Carrying the terrific gadas, pattisas, spears, mudgaras, parighas and the sharp arrows, badly wounded the Danavas.

The limbs of the foremost of the warriors, were getting injured badly. Their chests were wounded with the sword. Therefore they carried huge rocks in their hands.

Hundreds and thousands of Daitya possessing terrific force, thundered aloud and churned all the gods with their prowess.

Thereafter the voilent war started between the two sides, in which they made use of huge rocks, hundreds of trees and parighas, spears, bhindipalas, besides the battle axes, attacking one another.

The heads of some of the warriors had been wiped out, some of them were tom out, some of them were killed over the ground. Thus all the gods and the Danavas were soaked in blood.

By struggling among themselves, several of the warriors fled away from the battle ground. The hearts of many of them were tom out. Many of them slept on the ground with severed feet. Several of them had lost their lives with the attack of tridents.

The great battle field, which was filled with the Daityas and Danavas, looked quite awful. It was full of trees and the rocks which were used in the attack, which added to its awfulness.

The tune of the veena could resemble the twanging sound of the stretching of the cord of the bow. The hiccups of the warriors, served as the tune, the cries of the wounded were like the tuning of the singers, with the cymbals. Thus the battle appeared like the musical consert.

Kubera at that point of time was filled with rage, holding a bow in his hands, he showered the arrows and started driving out the Danavas on all the sides.

Observing his own army being torn by Kubera, Danava Anuhrada, mshed towards Kubera, carrying a huge rock in his hand.

At that point of time his eyes turned doubly red in anger. He was as valorous as his own father-Hiranyakasipu. Anuhrada threw the huge bulder at the chariot of Kubera.

Finding the arrival of the rock, Kubera, jumped from his chariot and stood there over the ground.

The rock destroying the wheels, yokes, horses, flags and the chariot with bows fell over the earth.

Destroying the chariot of Kubera, Anuhrada, the younger brother of Prahlada, started killing the warriors of gods with the use of trees with branches.

The heads of the gods were broken, the limbs were severed, they bathed with blood, with striking of the trees by the enemy all their limbs felt painful and they fell down on earth.

Anuhrada, the great asura, after driving out the huge army of gods, lifted up a mountain peak in his hand and attacked Kubera.

Finding Anuhrada advancing towards himself, Kubera lifted up a club in his hand and thundering aloud, challenge the valorous Daitya.

О lord, then Kubera — the lord of riches, getting enraged attacked the Danava over his chest, with the thorned club.

But the Daitya having eyes red in anger, did not care at all about the attack of Kubera on the other hand he dropped the mountain peak over Kubera the lord of riches.

With the strike of the mountain peak, Kubera, fell down on earth like the mountain reduced to pieces.

Finding Kubera — the lord of riches, having been so upset, the terribly strong Vaksas and Raksasas surrounded him and guarded him from all the sides.

Kubera remained upset for a couple of ghadis (forty four minutes). Thereafter the lord of riches and son of Visrava suddenly got up and uttered a lion's roar in anger, the sound of which echoed in the sky. At that point of time he created a loud sound, like the thundering of the clouds and lefting up the mountains as well.

Kubera — having the red eyes is beyond death. Therefore he at once got up again for the killing of the Danavas, who fled from the battle ground.

Observing his fleeing soldiers, Anuhrada said, "O immensely valorous Danavas, all of you forgetting, the arrogant Kalanemi, you remember, you prowess, and the race, getting frightened like the degraded warriors you are fleeing the battle ground. You better come back why are you trying to save your own lives. The Yaksa is unable to wage a war any more. The thunder he has uttered is only a scare crow.

О great asuras, all of you should return. I shall destroy the scarecrow, which has been raised for the destruction of Demoues, with my strength.

On hearing this, the asuras like the intoxicated elephants, returned to the battle ground and in rage started killing the enemy of the gods.

Many of the Daityas having lost their weapons were only thundering in the battle ground. Many of the terrific Daityas attacked with the arms or hands alone.

The immensely valorous warriors, attacked the enemy, with their long arms, logs of wood, rocks.

The strong warriors fought in the battle ground with fists, slaps, nails, trees with long branches.

Anuhrada who was filled with rage, getting immensely ready for victory, started churning the vast army of gods as the forest fire in flames reduces the forest to ashes.

Several of the prominent warriors, with their bodies soaked in blood were sleeping on the ground and resembled the trees with red flowers.

The strong lord Kubera, struggling in the battle field shot at Anuhrada, short and poisnous arrows which were horrible.

Anuhrada who had been wounded by Kubera in the battle ground, emitted the flames of fire from his mouth.

Then the enraged Anuhrada, like the Yama — the god of death, injured Kubera with his arrows.

Then Kubera's body having been wounded with arrows from all the sides, was soaked in blood. As stream of water flows from the mountain, similary the blood was oozing from the woundes on the body of Kubera. (He was fainted) Regaining consciousness, with his red eyes, Kubera who was immensely valorous, carried the terrific club in his hand getting almost fainted, and threw it forcefully at the Daitya.

But the Daitya uttering a lion's roar, broke Kuber's club in mid way in anger. At that point of time a wonderful incident happened.

Kubera again rushed towards the Danava carrying the cluiD. On the other hand, the valorous Anuhrada finding Kubera, advancing towards, himself, lifted up a- huge Kailasa like mountain and rushed towards Kubera, like the enraged god of death.

The Daitya was invincible from all the gods, and getting enraged like Yama, appeared like swallouring the entire universe. Finding him approching in that form, toward himself Kubera the god of riches fled away in panic from the battle ground and reached the place of Indra.

Observing his great prowess, Kubera — the god of riches, started shaking in terror and reached the place where Indra — the spouse of Saci was engaged in war.

Here ends chapter — 60, of the Bhavisya Parva of the Harivarhsa Purana, a supplement of the epic of Mahabharata, relating to the terrific battle between Kubera and Anuhrada. (Vrs. 1-74, P.T. = 12,514)
