Varuna's defeat in fight with Vipracitti

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, Vipracitti — the foremost of the Daityas, wounded in anger the eternal god Varuna with his arrows. His arrows were like the shining serpents.

Then the Daitya started burning with his arrows in flames, the god Varuna. At that point of time, Varuna, the lord of waters was unble to understand as to what should be done by him.

As Prajapatis Paramesthi cannot stand before the supreme soul — the lord of all the lokas, similarly Varuna could not stand before Vipracitti, the lord of the Danavas.

The army formation known as vajra, has its faces on all the sides. It is always fearless. Making use of the same army formation the Danava warrior started fighting the army of gods.

The face of intelligent Daitya Vipracitti, resembled the fire flames, and was resplendent like the sun.

The illustrious Varuna, with the desire of achieving victory, in his heart, looked at the great asura Vipracitti, as if he would reduce him to ashes with his resplendence.

The Daitya Vipracitti was adorned with the garlands of gold as well as the flames. The keyiiras and angadas (armlets) adorned his arms. He held a parigha in his hand like the peak of Kailasa.

The weapon was covered with gold leaves and was also decorated with gold garlands. It looked awful like Yamadanda, but removed the danger of the Daityas.

Vipracitti, the great asura, getting immensely enraged, rotated the parigha like the vajra of Indra and thundred aloud.

His neck was adorned with gold medals, the arms with armlets, ears with ear-rings, gold garland or necklace over the chest, as a result of which the Danava felt glamorous.

The Danava had the parighas of iron and the ornaments of gold as a result of which he appeared like the rainbow with the thundering of the clouds.

He regulated the wind with the parigha he uttered lion's roar aloud, the Daitya appeared like fire with smoke of the time of dissolution.

Getting confused with the parigha of the Daitya, the Vidyadharas, Gandharva nagas, Amaravatipuri, and the Siddha loka the sky together with stars and constellation, the sun and the moon, got confused.

The Daitya had become invincible, because of his rotating the parigha on all the sides. He was glamourous like the fire, and he stood up like the fire of the time of dissolution. The gods started burning like the fire bums in fire.

All the gods and Varuna, because of the panic of the Daityas, could not move about. Only Kausika Indra was standing there fearlessly.

The Daitya then dropped the illustrious parigha, resembling the sun, which looked quite dangerous in the army of Varuna — the lord of water.

With the fall of the parigha in the battle ground, killed at once a lakh of goblins of Varuna. Their bodies were reduced to thousands of pieces, which kept on moving in the sky like the comets.

The warriors of Varuna's army, appeared like hundreds of comets in the sky. Thereafter Vipracitti, rotating the parigha again threw it as Varuna.

With the mere touch of the body of Varuna, the parighas was reduced to pieces. The dangerous parigha, with the touch of the body of Varuna was reduced to pieces.

The dust of the broken parigha started shining in the sky like the fire flies. Varuna — the lord of water was least disturbed with the strike of vajra. Even after his having been struck with vajra, he stood there unshaken like the mountain.

With the destruction and wounding of his warriors the enraged lord of water, remained disturbed for a couple of ghadis (or forty four minutes). Then the valorous Varuna was filled with anger.

Thereafter Varuna — the subjugating the enemies organised all the people of his side. Then he turning himself into a watery body, was adorned with conches and pearls. At that point of time he was surrounded by all the four oceans. The illustrious Nagas sided with him. His white costumes were fluttering in the wind. He was adorned with various types of gems.

Surrounded by the fish and the tortoises, Varuna, the holder of pasa, commanded his warriors in rage, "O brave warriors, all of you should fight with the desire of killing the Danavas. On my part I shall kill this Danava — chief. You should stick to your positions fearlessly.

Then all the serpents living in the great ocean, uttering lion's roar with the desire of achieving victory entered the war zone and started killing the demons.

Then the warriors of Varuna having been filled with delight, attacked the Danavas, with arrows, weapons, clubs and musalas. They killed the Danavas.

Then the immensely valorous Vipracitti, getting enraged, started destroying the bodies of Nagas.

The foremost of the Danavas, then made use of the Garudastra, killed all the snakes throgh the Garuda birds who consume the serpents.

In the battle ground, Vipracitti, was shining like the sun, adorned with gold ornaments, churned the serpents with his arrows as well.

All the serpents were injured with the arrows. At that point of time they were lying over the ground, like the elephants who had been churned by the elephant kings.

At that point of time the glorious Varuna, attacked the Daitya who was scorching like the sun.

Thereafter his entire body was wounded by the enemy army. As a result of this thousands of Danavas getting fainted started fleeing towards all the directions.

Varuna, who was the foremost of the carrier of noon, started fighting the war for the sake of Indra, in the battle field.

Varuna and the serpents, getting intoxicated in the battle ground, fought bravely. They administed fists over the enemies and faced Vipracitti, the great asura.

Thereafter, Vipracitti, the great asura attacked with weapons as well as the rocks, over the enemies who were driven away.

Then Vipracitti injured the horses of the chariot of Varuna, which were fast moving and were resplendent like the fire in the battle field.

As the fire is raised in flames, with the pouring of the ghee, similarly with that great activity, the glory of Vipracitti kept on rising.

The valorous Danava, with his sharp and fast moving arrows, churned the vast army of Varunadeva.

He cut off the weapons of Varuna's soldiers. He troubled them with arrows. All of them were confused with the showering of the arrows by the Daitya. Vipracitti, wounded all the enemy soldiers with spears, Sakti, and other weapons. All of them were soaked in blood.

The Danava shot the arrows in the best possible manner, which were knotted and curved resembling the fire, and wounded all the horses of Varuna's chariot.

The said Daitya forced Varuna to retreat with his army. Feeling with panick, and painful, Vipracitti took refuge with Indra.

Chapter 62

Defeat of Daityas by Agni

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, obseving the humilating defeat by gods, the fire god — who is the foremost of all the gods and is praised by all, then thought of the destruction of the Daityas.

The one who is the son of Sandilya and Svayamprabha, who convays the havisya, whose semen is the gold, whose eyes are red, who is invoked by the gods, who consumes the havisya offered in the fire, who is of red complexion, whose neck is said to be of red colour, the one who removes the blemishes, who is the form of havya and kavya, the one who purifies, who is visvabhokta, who happens to be the mouth of all the gods and the one who can perform everything, who has the form of the beautiful Vedas, the one who possessed excellent lustre, who has thousands of flames, whose treasure is the excellent lustre, whose path is dark, who is resplendent with wonderful rays and is the god of gods. He is the one who is considered to be the witness of the universe. Who is pleased by the Brahmanas by making the offerings. Who has enough of the excellent flames and is the form of exclamation (yasatkara) who is samigarbha or who appears through the asvatha tree, the one who is the consumer of havisya and the one who is instrumental in the performing of all the Vedic rites. Who purifies all the bhutas, the treasure of the tapas of the gods, the one who subsides all the sins, who perforates tapas with the rising flames like the tongues, whose flames move to the south, whose smoke is auspicious, who has the form of yajha, who is the consumer of havisya, is the last of part and the present, carrier of the shares of the yajna besides being the form of Hari, who is the consumer of soma, has enough of lustre, who is known as Bhutanatha, Mahatapasvi, invincible, Pavaka, the form of riches, the soul of all the bhutas and the lord of Svadha. Whose glory has been sung by means of soma hymns. The one who is the spouse of Svahd — the goddess. He consumes the auspicious soma juice by means of somayaga. For the extracting the soma juice the stone pestles are used. He is the god of gods, immensely angry, the form of Rudra having emerged from Brahma. He maintains all the bhutas, has the flaged tuft of the smoke. He is clad in blue garments, Agnideva, the foremost of all the gods, moves over the chariot with wheels of wind driven by red steed, moves in the battle field, who is maker as of the fire - weapon, getting enraged like at the time of dissolution started burning millions and billions of Danavas.

The is the one who resides in the bodies of all the living beings in the form of five pranas, the one who is the charioteer and the friend of Agnideva, who is quite powerful and Isvara, the one who churns all the lokas at the time of dissolution, is the destroyer of all, the cause of who birth has been attirbuted by the srutis as the sky, with sapta-svaras, who is the god of the sky, who can travel the long distance, who is the cause of the birth of all, the one who is creator as well as the destroyer, who is the speed for all the moveable living beings, besides being the lord. Who is the eternal Purnsa in the world like Brahma, who has been conceived as the great invisible god, the same wind god who inspires all, also inspired the fire god, who emerged out of the asvatha tree, and made him strong.

It went on increasing with its flames up to the heaven and all the ten directions. The flames were raised for the destruction of the Daityas.

The fire god found the river of blood in the battle field in which marrow and the bellies were the mud, the hair of the heads were the river grass, the severed heads of the warriors, appeared like the stones, the carcasses of elephants appeared like the high banks, the blood instead of water was flowing in the same. Observing the river of blood flowing in the battle ground, lord Agnideva, who frightered the Daityas, made the river of blood to flow swiftely.

Thereafter in the great war, the sun god, while thundering started defeating Prahlada and many other gods.

The crowns of some of them started burning the hair of their head of some of them cought fire, while the costumes of some of them were in flames. The arms and faces of some of them were burnt out. The thighs of some of them were burnt, while the cakras (umbrellas), flags, and the chariots were reduced to ashes. All the Daityas there were surrounded with the flames of fire.

Getting defeated and frightened from the fire, all the Daityas and Danavas fled from the battle ground, with their weapons as well as flags, leaving behind the excellent chariots.

The fire was ignited at the start of the Daitya army which could not be sighted by the Daityas. All of them found all the directions, swords, and even the clouds in flame.

They felt panicky in their minds and thought that the lord Narayana — the self born one, or the fire god had started the dissolution of the world.

Both Mayasura and Sambhasura were highly illusory. Both of them created Varunastra and Parjanya like illusions, which started pouring rain.

When both the illusory Saktis started pouring of the heavy rain, then the fire in the battle ground was some what subsided.

Agnideva — the killer of the Daityas, getting subsided in the battle ground, then Brhaspati the priest of the gods spoke to them.

Guru Brhaspati said — О Agnideva, gold happens to be your semen, your face is quite beautiful. You are known by the name of Jvalana and are the consumer of all. You have seven tongues in your mouth, you can reduce the strength of every one. You can lick everyone with your flowing tongues. You are the great fire god, victory to you.

О excellent one, the wind happens to be your soul. The water is said to be youryoni, while you yourself are the yoni of water.

О marvellous one, your flames rise up and below and also move back wards. They infact move in all the directions.

О lord Agni, you are all powerful. The entire world has been established by you. You maintain all the bhutas as well as the Bhvanas.

О lord Agni, you are the only source, by which havisya is carried to the gods. You yourself are the excellent havisya. The saintly people always adore you in the yajha.

О Lord, you consume the food for all and protect the entire world. You always have the tendency to be victorious. The universe is established in you.

О carrier of havya, at the time of dissolution, you get in flames and burn all the three worlds. О lord Agni, you alone burn like the sun, there is none else to infuse heat in the sun rays.

O Agni, you alone pour the rain in the form of the sun. You are the lord of ocean, you alone are entitled to received the initial part in the yajna. О lord you are the place of origin of the universe besides being the base of the people.

О Agnideva, you have been described as the yoni of all the living being in the Vedas. You have killed the Danavas in the battle field for the benefit of the gods.

О illustrious Pavaka, the water happens to be you own yoni. Then why do you feel disgusted by having the same water.

О best of the gods, О black coloured one, having red eyes, you better protect the gods from the demons in the battle ground.
