Baladeva’s discourse to Pradyumna on Ahnika

Vaishampayana said: О Janamejaya, the best among the victorious warriors, on arrival of Pradyumna in Dvaraka, after killing of fCdla-Sambara, at that time Baladeva revealed to him a stotra for his wife’s protection, which was known as Ahnika. О best of the rulers, the same astonishing type of stotra is being narrated here, with the reciting of which in the evening time, a person is purified at heart.

The said stotra was recited by Baladeva himself, besides lord Visnu, the Rishis and the sages desirous of dharma.

Once upon a time, Pradyumna, the son of Rukmini, was seated in the palace with Balarama. He offered his salutation to Balarama with folded hands and enquired of him.

Pradyumna said: “О elder brother of lord Krishna and excellent son of Rohini, О lord, you enlighten me about a stotra, reciting which, I should feel free of any danger.

Shri Baladeva said: Let lord Brahma the preceptor of the gods as well as the asuras protect me. Let the proud gods on omkara, Vasatkara, Savitrl, the three types of vidhis, Rgveda, yajurveda, Samveda, Atharvaveda, the secrets, besides all the four Vedas with thus expansion, itihasa (history) Purana, supplements, parts, small parts and the besides the commentary literature, protect me.

Let the earth, wind, sky, water, fire lustre, the sense organs, the mind, the wisdom, the quality of goodness (sattva- guna), Vyana, JJdana, Samana, Prana, and the Apdna (the five winds) which control the entire world, the seven types of the flowing winds, Marlci, Ahgira, Atri, Pulastya, Pulaha, Kratu, Bhrgu, besides lord Vasistha - all the seven besides all the proud gods, should protect me.

Let all the fourteen sages including Kasyapa and others, the ten directions, together with their gods besides Nara and Narayana, protect me.

There are eleven Rudras, twelve Adityas, eight vasus, two Asvanikumares — all should protect me.

The goddess Hri, Shri, Laksmi, Svadha, Pusti, Medha, Tusti, Smrti, Dhrti, Aditi — the mother of gods, Diti — the mother of Daityas, Danu and Simhika should protect me.

The mountain like Himavan, Hemakiita, Nisadha, Svetaparveta, Rsabha, Pariyatra, Vindhya, Vaidiirya mountain, Sahya, Udaigiri, Malaya, Meru, Mandara, Durdara, Kranhca, Kailasa and Mainaka should protect me.

Then Sesa, Vasuki, Visalaksa and Taksaka, Elapatra, Suklavarna, Kambala, Asvalara, Hastibhadra, Pitaraka, Karakotaka, Dhanahjaya, Purnaka, Karaviraka, Naga, Sumanasya, Dodhimukha, Srngara - Pindaka, Maninaga - well known in the three worlds, Nagaraja Adhivikarna besides Hardrika and other several serpents, whose names have not been mentioned here — are all truthfull and carry the burden of the earth, should protect me.

Let all the four oceans protect me. The best of the rivers like Ganga, Sarasvati, Candrabhaaga, Satadru, Devika, Siva, Dvaravati, Vipasa, SarayU, Yamuna, Kalmasi, Rathosma, Bahuda, Hiratiyada, Plaksa, Iksumatl, Brhadratha, the well known Carmanvati, the auspicious Vadhusuara, besides those, the names of which have not been mentioned and all the rivers flowing in the northern India, should let me take a bath with their water.

The rivers like Vani, Godavari, Sita, Kaveri, Konkanavati, Krisna, Vena, Saktimati, Tamasa, Puspavahini, Tamaraporni, Jyotiratha, Utphali, Udumbaravati, Vaitarni, the auspicious Vidarbha, the auspicious Narmada, Vitasta. Bhimarathya, MahanadI, Aila, Kalindi, the auspicious Gomati, the well known river Sonabhadra, besides the other rivers whose names have not been mentioned but flow in the south India, all should bathe me with their water.

The rivers named Ksipra, Carnanvati, the river Mahi with auspicious water, Subhravati, Sindhu, Vetravati, Bhojanta, Vanamalika, Pruvabhadra, Prabhadrd, Urmila, Pradruma, the well known Vetravati, Capadasi, Prasthavati, Kundanadi, the auspicious Sarasvati, Citragni, Indumata, Madhumati, Umd, Gurunadi, Tapi, Vimalodaka, Vigata, Vimalada, Payasvini, besides those, whose names have not been mentioned and which flow in the western direction should bathe me with their auspicious water.

The river Bhagirathi — with auspicious water, which flows in the eastern region, which was held by lord Siva in the locks of his hair, should relieve me of all the sins, after her name is recited.

The holy shine like Prayaga, Prabhasa, Naimisa, Puskara, Gangatirtha, Kuruksetra, Shri Kantha, Gautamasram, Parasrama- kunda, Vinasavatirtha, Ramatirtha, Gangadvara, Kanakhalatirtha, the birth place of Soma, Kapalamocana - tirtha, the well known Jambumarga, Suvarnabindu- tirtha, Kanaka Pingalatirtha, Dasasmedha- tirtha with auspicious hermtages, the well known Badri-tirtha, Nara-Narayana asrama, Phalgutirtha, Candravata-tirtha, the extremely auspicious Kakamuhha - tirtha, Gangasagara, Tapoda of Magadha country, the well known place of pilgrimage of Gangodbheda, are the places of pilgrimage which were served by the great sages, let them purify me with their auspicious water.

Besides the holy places like Sakra-drtha, Yogamarga, Svatadvipa, Brahmatirtha, Ramatirtha — which bestows the merit of performing a hundred Asvamedha sacrifices, the place where the Ganga falls in streams, Vaikuntha-Kedara, the excellent Sukrod-bhedama-tirtha, and the well known Sapmaocana - tirtha, should purify me, relieving me of all the sins.

The scriptures on dharma, artha, kama, achieving of glory, Sama, dama, Varuna, Isa, Kubera, yama, Niyama, Kala, Naya, Sannati, anger, confusion, forgiveness, patience, vidyut (lighting) clouds, osadhis, arrogace, pride, conflict, glory, Pisaca, Gandharvas, Kinnaras, Siddhas, Caranas, demons, those who move in the sky, the wild animals with large fangs, those who are interested in conflict alone, the valorous, pot bellred, those having yellow eyes, the ganas, Marudganas-clouds Kala, lava, ksanas, constellations, planets, the seasons Hike the winter and others, the months, days, nights, Surya, moon, amoda - Pramoda, delight dust, darkness, tapas, truth, purity, intelligence, Dhrti - patience, Sruti, Rudrani, Bhadrakali, Bhadra, Jyestha, Varum, Bhasi, Kalika, Sandhali, Arya, Kuha, Sinivali, Bhlma, Citrarathi, Rati, Kusmandi, the goddess Ratyayani, lohitya, Janamata, the divine girls, Gonanda, and Devepatnl, should protect me with my kiths and kins.

The Matikas, adorned with all the ornaments, whose faces are painted with several types of paintings, who wander in several countries, carrying seveal types of arms, who like the roots, marrow, flesh and fat, who have the faces of cats, tigers, elephants, lions, eagles, crows, vultures or Kraunca birds, who have the yajnopavltas of serpents cover their bodies with animals skins, whose faces are soaked with blood, whose voice is deep like the big drums, who are jealous as well as full of anger, who dwell in the beautiful palaces, who getting intoxicated attack others living in their abodes, whose hair and eyes are always yellow, whose hair is cut off, whose hair of the head remain erect, who have white or black hair, who are dwarfish in size, each one of whom possesses the strength of ten thousand elephants, who have the speed of wind, who have a single foot, a single hand, one eye, who have the yellow colour of the body, who have many or little number of sons, who have only two sons, who decortate their sons, who are known by the names of Mukhamandl, Vidall, Putana, Gandhaputana, SItavatosna-Vetall, Revatl and many others, who are called the horrible ones devourers od the children, who like langhing and anger, who like the costumes and the abodes, who always speak pleasent words, who also cause pleasure and pain, and always love the Brahmanas, who wonder in the night and bestow comforts to their devotees in future and who display their awful forms on the occasion of festivities, protect me daily as a mothers protects her son.

The one who emerged out of the mouth of Brahma, who is Raudra (terrific), is born out of the limbs of Rudradeva, had appeared out of the sweet of Kumara Karttikeya besides the Vaisnava fevers, who is highly awful, great valorous, full of pride, immensely strong, full of anger, or without anger, who has a harsh turperament, who takes to the form of other gods as well, who wears malus and his neck, who wanders in the night, who has long fangs, who loves his body, who is pot billeid, fat buttocks and the eyes are yellowish, who had universal form, who carries a Sakti, rsti, spear, parigha, prasa, shield, and a sword in his hands, besides other weapons, who likes a bow, vajra, musala and Brahmadanda as his weapons, who carries danda and Kunda who is valorous, whose head id adorned with the malted locks of hair, besides a crown, who is well versed in vedas and the supplymentary vedic litrature, who alwears a yajnapavlta who has a crown of serpenthood over the head and the ear rings in the ears, the armlets over the arms, who is full of strength, is clad in various types of garments, astonishing type of garments and the pastes, whose face resembles those of a elephant, a horse, camel, bear, cat, lion, tiger, bear, owl, jackal, deer, mouse, he buffalo, who is dwarfish, terrible in appearance, hunch-backed, horrible with the hair having been cut, besides he had lakhs of locks of hair over the head, some of which are white like the kailasa mountain, some are resplendent like the sun, some are black like the clouds, some are blue like the collyrium, who has a single or two feet, who has two heads, who appears like skeleton deprived of the flesh, whose calves are quite thick, who looks terrible because of his open mouth, who dwells in step wells, ponds,wells, oceans, rivers, mountains, trees, or the deserted let him protect me from all the sides, like the mothers.

Vaikrta-graha, Aniketa, SUragni, Siva, Atisiva, Asiva, Ksemaka, Pisitasi, Su.ra.ri, Harilocana, Bhimaka, Grahaka, Agra mayapranet, Upagraha, Aryaka, Skanda Graha, Capala, Asama — Vetala, Tarnasa, SumaMkapi, Hrdayodvardana, Aida, Kundasi, Kankanapriya, Harismasru, Garutman, having the speed of wind or the mind, the hundreds and thousands of ganas, born of the anger of Parvati, who are quite strong, patient, devoted to the Brahamanas, and who destroy all the desires of the enemies in all the battles, all of them, when adored during the day or night, or at the time of the arrival of terrific danger, then all the Ganpatis, with all their virtues as well as the ganas should always protect me.

Let Mahaganapati, Nandi, valorous Mahakala, Mahesvara - the terrific in the world, Vaisnava, fever Gramani, Gopala, Bhrngrid, Ganesvara, Deva, Vdmadeva, Ghantakarna, Kararhdhana, Svatamoda, Kapali, Jambhaka, Satru-tapana, Majjana, Unmajjana, Santapana, Vilapana, Nijaghasa, Aghasa, Sthimakarana, Prasosana, Ulkamali, Dhamdhama, Jvdlamali, Pramardana, Samghttana, Sankutana, KastbhUta, Sivankara, Kasmanda, Kumbha-mUrdha, Rocana,

Besides Narada, Parvata, Gandharvas and groups of apsaras manas, karanas (causes) the ailments, Agastya, Galava, Gargya, Sakti, Dhaumya, Parasara, Krishnatreya - the illustrion Asita Devala, Bala,. Brahaspati, Utathya, Markandeya, Srutasrava, Dvaipayana, Vidarbha, Jaimird, Mathar, Katha, Visvamutra, Vasistha, Lomasa - the great sage, Uttanka, Raiblya, Pauloma, Dvita, Trita, the Rishis of Kalaka tree, Medha tiethi, Saraeat Yavakrt, Kausika, Gautama, Samvarta, Rsyasrnga, Svastatreya, Vibhandeka, Rclka, Jamaada- ngni, Aurva, Bhardvdja, Sthulasira, Kasyapa, Pulaha, Kratu, Brhadagni, Harismasru, Vijaya, Kanva, Vaitandi, Dirghatapa, Vedatgatha, Amsuman, Siva, Astdvakra, Dadhici, Svetaketu, Uddalaka, Ksirapani, Srngi, Gauramukha, Agni Vesya, Sartnka, Pramncu, and Mumucu and several other Rishis following the best of vratas, and the sages with the purified souls, the performer of the yajhas besides those with the peaceful minds who have not been mentioned here, should always bestow peace on me.

The three types of fires, the three Vedas, those well versed in the three vidyas, the Kaustubha gem, the horse Uccaisarava, Dhanvantvri — the physician, Hari, amrta (the nectar), Gau (Kamadhenu cow) Garuda, the curd the white mustard seeds, white flowers, the virgin girl, white ambrella, barley, unbrokenrice, DUrba - grass, gold, fragrance, flywhisk, the invicible Sudarsanacakra, the bull, sandal paste, poison, white bull, intoxicated elephant, lion, tiger, horse, mountain, the earth recovered after digging, fried paddy, Brahmana, honey, payasam, Svastika, Vardhaman, Nandyavarta, Priyangu, coconut, milk, fish, kettledrums, and the sound of beating of the big drums, the wives of the Rishis, the virgin girls, the glorious bhadrasana, the bow, Gorocana, Rucaha, water of the confluency rivers, Garuda, lotus of hundred petals, partridgs bird, Jfva, Nandl-mukha, the peocock, the banners with pearls, the weapons which establish the task, should protect me always.

In earlier times, Balarama, desirous of long life, Laksmi, and vicrtory, had mentioned about this stotra which is removed the misfortunes and bestower of welfare.

The learned person, who on the occasion of every festivity, taking bath, performs recitation of this stotra or hears it, he does not have to face the defeat or nervousness; this stotra makes one achieve welfare in this as well as the life after death.

With the reciting of this stotra one achieves, wealth, glory and long life. This stotra is as auspicious as the Vedas themselves. It is full of riches, bestower of the heaven, blissful, auspicious, besides being the bestower of the progeny. With the reciting of the stotra which increases wisdom, fortunes, not only this, it also removes all the ailments, besides increasing the glory of the race.

The faithful people, with compassion, and self control, while reciting this stotra, are relieved of all the sins and with their mind getting purified, he attains the eternal bliss.
