Rescue of the Earth by Lord Varaha





Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, it has been ordained in the Vedic Sruti, that the entire universe being the shape of Prajapati emerged out of the golden egg.

The all pervading lord broke the egg from the top. Then for the emergence of all the lokas it was broken from the bottom as well.

Then the all powerful lord, who produced the entire universe, made eight more holes in the golden egg. Thereafter, Shri Hari, divided the universe.

Out of the hole made in the egg over the top, it produced the sky, which happens to be the refuge of the noble people. Then the Paramatma to whom the entire universe belongs, caused the nether world to be made of the hole which was created by him at the bottom.

With the intention of creating the heaven, the eight holes which were caused by the supreme soul in the golden egg, resulted into the creation of all the directions and the subdirections. He mentally divided them into two parts. The coloured pieces of the egg, were turned into the clouds of different colours.

The fluid that emerged out of the centre of the egg was known as Rta, which was established at several places and was turned into the gold on earth.

О king, as the entire earth is plunged into water during the time of dissolution, similarly the fluid water was spread in all the places of the earth.

With the desire of creating the heaven, the egg and was created by the lord, wherever the water fell, it was turned into gold.

All the directions and subdirections were submerged into the water. The regions in the space, the heavens and the area in between them, whatever the water fell, it raised the huge mountains.

Then the earth, having been obstructed with the mountains, became uneven. The mountains which had been spread in several yajnas pressed the earth at several places, which made her feel painful.

The divine golden water which was illustrious, resembling Narayana fell on earth in large quantity. The earth feeling unable to carry it, kept on falling in the nether world, because she felt painful with the serial tejas of the lord.

Finding the earth sinking lord, Madhusudana, for the benefit of all the lokas thought of redeeming her.

The lord said mentally — The virtuous earth, carrying my heavy weight, is sinking down like a cow caught in the mud or swamp, it appears.

The Earth said — The lord, who is known as Trivikarma, because of his measuring the earth with three steps, whose prowess is beyond measure, who holds the Saranga bow, Sudarsan-cakra, Nandaha sword, and Kaumadi-club, I bow in reverance to the four armed lord Nrsimha.

О lord, you hold the world with your strength you also destroy it. You maintain all the living beings of the earth.

What is carried by you with your lustre and strength, the same is carried by me at your back.

I carry everything whatever is carried by you. I cannot carry anything which is not carried by you. There is no form which is not carried by you.

О valorous Narayana, you alone, for the welfare of the world, relieve me of my burden in many yugas (aeons).

О best of gods, I am sinking in the nether world because of the lustre (emerging out of your body in the form of mountains) I take refuge in you, you kindly protect me.

Suffering at the hands of the wicked Raksasas and the Daityas, I always take refuge with you, О lord.

I have witnessed hundreds of times, that unless I take refuge with your like the bull with large humps, I have to face a lot of sufferings."

The lord said — “O Earth, donot be afraid, О auspicious one, be peaceful at mind, controlling yourself. I shall just now carry you to the appropriate and your desired place.”

Vaishampayana said — Thus speaking, lord Hari, mentally thought of some divine form. He thought,"with which form, should I protect the earth. What type of the form should be there, by which I could be able ot rescue the earth."

Thus thinking the lord thought of taking to the form of (a boar). Shri Hari, the carrier of the earth, got ready to rescue her. His shape at that point of time was ten yojana long and a hundred yojanas in height. The lord was honoured like the Vedas. The gigantic form of the lord was invincible by the living beings.

The complexion of his body resembled the blue sky. His sound resembled the thunder of the clouds. This form of the lord resembled the huge mountains. He had white tusks, which were shining besides being awful.

His lutre resembled the lighting or the fire. His lustre resembled that of the sun. He had thick humps, which were round and circular. He moved like a lion with arrogance, His waist was quite high and fleshy. He had all the symptoms of a bull. Thus lord Hari in the form of a vast Varaha (Hari) entered the waters in order to rescue the earth.

The four of the yajha - Varaha, represented the four Vedas. The sacrificial poles were his tusks yajnas were his teeth, citi was his mouth, the fire was his tongue, kusa served as the hair of his body, while Pranava was his forehead. He had the huge tapas to his credit. Both day and night served his eyes, the six angas of the vedas served him as his ear-rings.

Ghee was his nose, while Sruva was his nostrils, reciting of the Samaveda was his awful thunder. He had a gigantic body. His body was truthful and auspicious. He had divine grace of the body. He possessed the movement as well as the prowess.

He had vast nostrils. Pasu and knees were yajnas for him. The performance of homa served as a linga for him. The seeds and osadhis were the great fruits for him.

The wind was his inner soul. The hymns stood his buttocks, soma - juice was the blood for him. The yajna - altar seved as his humps. Havisya stood for his fragrance while havya and kavya stood for his force.

The leaf hut was his body. He was illustrious and was adored by several types of Daksina, which represented his heart. He was a great yogi as well as Mahasatra.

Upakarma samskara was the ornament of his lips, while hte pravagyakarma was. adoring his navel. Several types of metres served as the roads for him, while the deeprooted Upanisadas were the seat for him.

The shadow falling in water was his helper like the fire. He was high like the mountain of gems. Thus taking to the form of Yajna-Varaha the lord, the preceptor of the world entered the water to rescue the earth.

The earth which was drowned in water, had reached the nether world. Lord Prajapati also reached before the earth.

The lord — the rescuer of the earth, for the benefit of the people, lifted up the earth with the top of his nose and restored her at her aroginal place.

Lord Varaha, who held the earth, hold the earth initially, he suddnely took her out of the waters and left her there. With the lifting of the earth by lord Varaha, she felt relieved and peaceful. She then offered her solutations to the bountiful lord again and again.

Thus the lord desirous of the welfare of all taking to the form of yajna-Varaha rescued the earth goddess.

Thereafter the lotus eyed lord Hari — the best of the gods, lifted up the earth goddess, to rescue her from the oceanic water and then thought of dividing her.

Thus at that point of time lord Hari taking to the form of Varaha, the glorious Acyuta, for the benefit of all, forcefully raised the earth over a single tusk and resuced her.
