Narasimha's arrival in the court of Hiranyakasipu

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, I have till now narrated the stories of the twelve incarnation of Visnu. Now you listen to the story of Narsimha incarnation of Visnu, in which, the lord, taking to the form of a man lion had killed the Daitya Hiranyakasipu.

О king, in early times during Satyayuga, the Daitya king who was quite strong performed severe tapas.

He performing the Kastha-maunavrata, lived in water for eleven thousand and five hundred years.

Thereafter with the controlling of his mind, the sense organs, Brahmacarya, and Capas performed by him, Brahma — the grand sire was extremely pleased.

Then Brahma, who happens to be the preceptor of all the mobile and immobile beings, having the lustre of the sun, seated over the plane driven by the swans, and surrounded by the Adityas vasus, sadhyas, Marudganas, the gods, Visvedevas, Rudras, Yaksas, Raksasas, Kinnaras, besides directions, sub directions, rivers, oceans, constellations, the gods who were the lord of muhiirtas the planets of the sky, the gods, Brahmarsis, siddhas, Saptarsis, the auspicious Rajarsis, Gandharvas, apsaras, and other groups of gods reached before the Daitya and said.

Brahma said — О Daitya king, performer of the excellent vrata, you happen to be my devotee. I am extremely pleased with your hard tapas. Let you meet with welfare, you ask for a boon, and you would have your desire fulfilled.

On hearing this Hiranyakasipu the king of Danavas, felt delightful at heart, and he spoke with folded hands.

Hiranyakasipu said — О lord, none of the gods, asuras, Gandharvas, Yaksas, Nagas, Raksas, humans or the Pisacas should be able to kill me, in any way.

O Grand sire of the world, the Rishis, tapasvis, should not be able to pronounce a curse on me in anger. This is the boon required by me.

I should remain invincible from weapons, (astras or sastras), nor with the mountain, nor the trees, nor with the dry or wet element. I should not be killed by any weapon.

I should not die in heaven, or the nether world, in the sky or on earth, neither during the day or the night, or by anyother means.

Only such a person who is competent enough to kill the attendants, and myself with a slap with my arm, he alone should be able to kill me.

I should be able to pervade in the sun, moon, wind, fire, water, the sky, constellations and the ten directions.

I should be the lord of kama, Krodha, Varuna, yama, Indra, Kubera — the lord of riches, besides being the lord of Kimpurusas.

О grand sire of all the lokas, О Devesvara, in the great war all the divine weapons should automatically reach me, in human form."

Pitamaha said — О excellent one, I bestow on you all the wonderful and the astonishing boons. О son, all these boons, fulfill all the desires though they are difficult to achieve. (But these boons have been achieved by you with your tapas. Even with the small desire, you will encash these boons. All your desires shall be fulfilled. There is no doubt about it.

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, thus speaking, lord Brahma returned to Viraja his place, being attended by the Rishis.

Learning about the grant of the boon to Hiranyakasipu, all the gods, Nagas, Gandharvas, and the sages, reached before Brahma with humility.

The gods said — О lord, Hiranyakasipu would become arrogant with the boon granted to him by you. He is sure to cause utmost pain and terror to all of us. Therefore, you kindly be pleased with us and think of the means for killing him. Because you are the sole creator of the world. You are quite influential, creator of havya and kavya, beside being the invisible Prakrti and the shape of Dhruva."

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, listening to the words of the gods, which were benevolent for gods, lord Prajapati spoke to them nectar like sweet words assuring the gods and others.

He said, "O gods, the asura shall surely achieve the reward of his tapas. After availing of the reward had earned with the performing of his tapas, then lord Visnu, himself will kill this demon."

Listening to the words of Lord Brahma, who emerged out of the navel of lord Visnu, all the gods felt delighted and reverted to their respective abodes.

With the achieving of the boon by Hiranyakasipu, he started causing pain to all the people. He had been immensely filled with arrogance, with the receipt of boon by him from Brahma.

The valorous Daitya, then visiting several of the excellent asramas, humiliated many of the ascetics engaged in the performing of hard tapas, having controlled all their sense organs and were truthful.

He defeated all the gods living in the three lokas, he usurped the kingdoms of all the three lokas. Thereafter he started living in the heaven.

Becoming arrogant with the achieving of the boon, the asura, influenced with kaladharma, declared the Daityas to share the part of yajna, depriving the gods of the same. Thereafter, the Adityas, Vasus, Rudras, gods, Yaksas, Brahmanas, Maharsis, went and took refuge with lord Narayana, who was the Yajna Purusa, the eternal Brahman, who is adorable by the best, present and future and delighted all the people.

The gods said — О Illustrious one, о Narayana Deva, we have arrived here to take refuge with you. For us you all the excellent preserver, besides being the supreme preceptor, О best of the gods, you are the lord of the gods like Brahma and others.

О Narayana having the eyes resembling the spotless lotus flowers, you kindly be ready to protect us and for the killing of the Daitya. О lord, you kindly kill the Daitya king. Hiranyakasipu, and save us from his terror.

Lord Visnu said — О Devas, be fearless, I bestow fearlessness to you. О gods, you shall again, excercise your control over the heaven.

I shall soon kill the Daitya king Hiranyakasipu the son of Diti, who has become invincible because of his having boon from Brahma, with his army."

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, thus speaking, Lord Visnu, sent off the gods and he himself with a resolve for the killing of Hiranyakasipu, reached the mountain Himalaya in a short while.

Reaching there, he thought, "In which form should I kill the Daitya king, which should meet with success in killing this Daitya king — who is inimical to the gods.

Then he took to a man-lion form, which had never appeared earlier. That form of lord Visnu was invincible from the Daityas.

Thereafter, the valorous lord Hari, made Omkara as his helper and made him to accompany him. Feeling delighted with the help of Omkara, the all competent, eternal lord Visnu, went to the place of Hiranyakasipu. He was resplendent like the sun and he dazzled like another moon.

Then the all pervading Paramesvara turned himself into the form of half man and half lion. Then he rubbing his both the hands took to the form of Narasimha. Thereafter he glanced the vast, pleasent, charming, assembly of Hiranyakasipu, endowed with all the desired pleasures.

The assembly was spread into a hundred and fifty yojanas in length and a hundred yojanas in width. Its height was five yojanas. It always floated in the sky and moved as per the will of its members.

The blemishes like the oldage, grief, fatigue could not enter it. It was immobile, beautiful and comfortable. Beautiful seats had ben arranged in it and it was resplendent like the fire.

There was a tank inside it, which had been built by Visvakarma. It had enough of gem studded trees, laden with flowers and fruits.

It had trunks, canopcis with strong beads of blue, yellow, black, dark, white and red colours. Besides hundreds of shoots and creepers were carved in it.

It had precious seats which looked pleasent with the shining lustre. The beautiful assembly looked like the clouds in the sky and its reflection in water, appeared like a boat floating over the surface of the water.

It was exceedingly beautiful and was illumining very much. It attracted the minds of all with its divine fragrance. There was neither pleasure nor pain, neither winter nor cold.

The members of the assembly, reaching there never felt hungry, thirsty or remorseful. It was built with various types decorative pillars which were studded with divine gems, were quite hard and lasting. The assembly was shining with its own lustre like the sun, moon, and fire.

The assembly was lodged at the back of the heaven, put the solar disc to shame and was always illuminating. All the divine as well as the worldly pleasures were found there in abundance.

The juicy stuffs were found there in abundance. Enormous quantity of eatables was found there. The fragrant garlands were regularly made there and the trees blossomed with flowers and were laden with fruits.

The hot water was easily available in winter and the cold water in summer. At that point of time lord Narasimha, like a beautiful trees stood over the bank of the river there. The fore parts of their branches were blossoming with flowers. The trees had a large number of branches. Fresh and tender shoots and leaves were growing on the trees over which a large number of creepers were also growing. Their flowers were extremely fragrant while the fruits were quite delicious and juicy.

The lord found the auspicious places over the banks of the lakes.

The lakes were filled with the lotuses like Nalina, Pundartka and those with thousand petalled, besides lotuses with blue and red coloured.

In the lakes the birds like swans, mallards, ruddy geese, cranes, osprey birds were sporting with their beloveds.

All the tanks or lakes were filled with spotless clean water resembling the crystal gems, in which the white eight petalled lotuses were blossoming. The sweet sound of swans the sports of the mynahs were echoeing in the sky.

The lord saw the trees, the branches of which were blossoming with flowers, and tender shoots, besides the creepers.

In the assembly of the Daitya king, the Ketak (Pandoras odoratissimus) Asoka, pine, white lotus or nut meg, tilaka, Arjuna, (Terminalia alatayarba), mango, kadamba tree, Mimusops elengi, the shrub Grislea tomentosa, Priyangu, (Panic seeds) the tree of trumpet flowers, silk cotton trees, turmeric, sUla, tala, Priyala, champaka and several other trees added to the beauty of the place.

The trees of coral with their red lustre appeared like the flames of the forest fire. Their beautiful trunks and the Vamjula trees with their branches which resemble the Asoka tree looked there quite fine. They were as high as the palm trees they had the beauty of collyrium as well as the Asoka trees.

The trees like Varana, Vatsanabha, Jack fruits, sandal wood, Nila, Sumana, Pita, Amla, Pipala, Tenduka, myrobalan, jasmine flowers, Bhadradaruka, myrobalam, rose apple, bread fruit, Saila baluka, rosin, Arjuna, kundarava, sappen wood, kutaja (Echites untedysen terica), karbaha, Nipa, Agaru, Kadamba, Bhavya, pomegranate, lemon tree, coconut, DukUla, asafoctida, Tailaparniha, palm, cocoanut, betelnut, turmeric, Bassia lotifolia, chhitavana, wood apple, Paravata, jackfruit, several types of bushes, tamdl trees surrounded by the creepers, leaves and flowers the creepers laden with several types of fruits, were found there in abundance together with other wild trees blossoming with various types of trees, looked quite graceful there.

The vast trees with branches blossoming with flowers, looked quite beautiful.

Over the branches of the huge trees, the partridges, the peacocks, intoxicated cuckoos, besides the mynahs, were pirched in flocks.

The birds of red, yellow and pink colours, besides other creations looked at one another.
