Defeat and Victory of gods and Daityas in war





Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, then the enraged Namuci, and Mahatma. Dhar fought a horrible war.

Both had long arms, were excellent archers, who could subjugate the enemies. Both of them having been filled with rage, looked at each other as they would burn each other with their eyes.

Dhara — the excellent Vasu, spread the vast bow the back of which was made of gold, and unmindful of his death, he started fighting in anger.

Dhara made a net of the sharp arrows and covered the chariot of Daitya Namuci as well as the sun rays.

Then Namuci also smilingly started pouring the rain of terrific, invincible, rocks with horrible speed. All the arrows had been sharpened with grinder.

The illustrious and forceful besides immensely strong Daitya named Namuci, injured Dhara, shooting nine sharp arrows at him.

As the movement of the elephant is stopped with the use of the goad, similarly having been obstructed by the arrows, Dhara, the foremost of the vasusj got immensely enraged and attacked Namuci.

Finding him moving with great force, Namuchi moved forward in the battle field, in order to face Vasu, exactly in the same way as an intoxicated elephant engages itself in fight with another intoxicated elephant.

Thereafter the Daitya blew the couch which made the sound equivalent to a hundred trumpets. Having been filled with delight like the ocean, disturbed the army of the gods. Then he having the steeds of the colour of bears, also covered the enemy horses of the colours of the swans, with the arrows.

Finding the chariot of Vasus as well as the Danavas, the army of the gods started shaking repeatedly.

The eyes of both of them became red with anger. Both of them appeared like fighting of the two tigers and two elephants from which fluid was issuing, thundering again and again.

The terrific fight between both of them, appeared like the fight with lord Yama.

The battle of both than became attractive like the sport in the sports hall. Observing it the commanders of both the sides desired victory of their own side.

The battle between the god and the Danava was being witnessed by the siddhas, Gandharvas, and the sages.

Both the valorous warriors, wounded each other in the battle field, with sharp arrows, covering the sky with the net of arrows.

With the desire to kill each other with the sharp arrows, both the warriors looked graceful like the clouds pouring the rain.

Showering the rain of arrows made of gold both the warriors who killed their enemies, made the sky resplendent like the sun, and filled the sky with comets.

The god Dhara and the Danava Namuci, issued arrows which were shining in the sky like the lines of cranes flying in the sky in the winter season.

As the clouds cover the sky, similarly the earth was covered with the dead horses and elephants of the gods in a moment.

Thereafter Namuci, shot a cakra which was resplendent like the sun and had sharp blades, at Dhara.

The falling cakra reduced to ashes the chariot of Dhara, which was resplendent like the sun rays, its flag, the weapons and the horses.

Discarding the chariot which was burning with the strike of cakra the god Dhara, feeling frightened, fled towards his excellent abode.

Thus with the defeat the god Dhara, Namuci, having been filled with arrogance, marched towards the army of gods followed by his own army.

Maya and Tvasta who are famous among the gods and the Daityas, and have been turned as Visvakarma. A terrific war started between them. Both of them were experts in several of the illusions. Both of them were competitive about the war for a long time.

Tvasta, being arrogant of his strength, injured May shooting three hundred and thirty arrows.

Then Maya also made Tvasta as the target of his arrows. The arrows of Maya could strike well and were covered with gold. Their tips were bright and shining. Then having been hurt with the arrows of Tvasta, Maya — the foremost of the Daityas, uttered a lion's roar quite loudly.

This enraged Tvasta, and he started killing the Daitya army. Then he took a golden Sakti studded with Lapiz Lazuli, with a wonderful handle, full of lustre, in his hand, and shot it at the Daitya in the battle ground.

The terrific Sakti, was completely made of iron. Like the throwing of vajra by Indra, similarly the Sakti shot by Tvasta, having the influence of the sun and fire, was spotted by the asura Maya, who atonce reduced it into pieces with the shooting of three sharp arrows.

Then the great asura getting enraged, became ready to kill Tvasta by started shooting at him the arrows to which the wings of peacock were fixed.

Then Tvasta atonce cut off the arrows of the Danava with his own arrows which had knots, shining, quite forceful.

Both the valorous warriors, fought between themselves like the two bulls fighting for uniting with a cow. They attacked each other like the tigers.

For the killing each other they fought for long and viewed each other like the two poisonous snakes.

As the two elephants while engaged in fight attack each other with the tip of their tusks, similarly both of them stretching fully the cord of their bows shot arrows at each other.

Then Mayasura, adorned with the gold armlets, getting enraged, shot a gada, which could kill all in the battle field, at Tvasta.

The valorous Danava, having been filled with anger, with the use of that gada, killed the excellent steed of Tvasta’s chariot, exactly in the same way as Indra had grounded all the mountains with the use of Vajra.

Thereafter the enraged Mahadaitya shot in the battle ground, two terrified arrows named ksura at Tvasta, which cut off the flag and the charioteer of the chariot. He had already killed the excellent horses of the chariot earlier with the use of the gada.

Then Tvasta having found his charioteer killed besides the horses, leaving his dead charioteer and horses there itself, creating deafening sound from the twanging of the bow, stood attentively on the ground.

At the killing of Tvasta's charioteer and the steed who had been deprieved of the, chariot, Maya found the enemy standing victorious in the battle ground, then he holding the bow in his hand arrived before him. At that point of time he looked like the god of death.

As the forest fire, burns the forest, similarly, Maya started destroying the armies of the gods. He also shot sharp and terrific arrows at Tvasta. Thereafter he made use of fourteen arrows, which had been sharpened with the grinder, and shot at the enemy.

As the poisonous snake getting enraged with the move of the destiny sucks the blood of others, similarly the arrows, covered with gold started sucking the blood of the enemy army.

The arrows soaked in blood, falling on the ground were pushed into it and appeared like the snakes having half crawled into the snake holes, giving an interesting look.

Then Tvasta shot, fourteen immesely sharp arrows, which wounded Mayasura, tearing out his body.

The winged arrows tearing out the left arm of the Daitya forcefully entered the earth like the serpents.

While entering the earth, the arrows, appeared like sun rays appearing at the time of the sun setting at Astacala, while illumining.

Thereafter, Maya shot three winged arrows, having the speed of Garuda, which were killer of people, forceful, terrific and wounded Tvasta.

Having been wounded with the arrows of Maya, the powerful Tvasta, felt ashamed and deserting the battle field, fled away.

Thus depriving Tvasta of the chariot, charioteer, and depriving him of the prowess like the snake without poison, Maya - Danava felt extremely pleased.

Issuing the twanging sound from the bow which was adorned with a gold ring the Daitya king Maya stood in the battle ground shining like the burning flames of fire.

Then the demon Puloma, who praised his own strength, besides being arrogant, mounted over the chariot, started fighting with the wind god who was mounted over the chariot with white horse.

The Brahmanas consider Vdyudeva as the life of all the living beings. The demon Puloma went and had a conflict with the wind god.

The wind god, listening to the twanging sound of the bow of Puloma, could not tolerate it as the intoxicated elephant cannot tolerate the trumpeting of the opponent elephant.

As the vast sky is covered with the net of the sun-rays, similarly the arrows issuing from the bow of Puloma, covered all the ten directions.

The eyes of the wind god, getting enraged like the hissing snake, became red in anger. He, having been surrounded with hundred of Daityas appeared like the sun shining with its rays.

The arrows with peacock feathers, shot with the strength of arms, and wings of gold appeared like the flocks of swans flying in a line in the sky, which kept on shining.

The burning arrows of the attacker Daitya, issued from his bow, the flag, banners, were falling in all the directions which were quite visible.

Thus the Daitya shot many wonderful arrows which were sharp and built in gold, flew in the sky and looked like the fire flies.

Finding the Daitya advancing towards the wind god like the god of death, the wind god became unconcerned about his own life, wounded the Daitya with his nine arrows.

Observing the terrific force of Paloma, the valorous wind god resorting to the excellent force distroyed all the arrows of the Daitya.

Shattering his lustre and the arrows the valorous wind god then wounded the Daitya with twenty arrows having the knots in them.

Observing this, the ten excellent souls out of the excellent Marudganas, uttered lion's roar shouting Sadhu repeatedly.

With the uttering of the terrific lion's roar, the Daitya known as Puloma, fainted and fell down with anger (and after regaining consciousness) he rushed (towards the wind god).

Reaching before the wind god, he covered the wind god with his arrows, as the clouds cover the mountain with the pouring of the rain in the rainy season.

The enraged seven Pulomas started teasing the wind god in the same way as the seven awful planets tease the moon got at the time of dissolution.

Then the wind god having been filled with strength and prowess, then raised his right hand while could not be disturbed by any one, and was decorated with many gems, resembling the trunk of the elephant in shape, and accacked all the seven Paulomas in their heads. With attack of that hand resem- bling the wind god all the seven of them were killed.

Then Puloma finding the eternal wind having been filled with pride and invincible, then he getting unmindful of his own life injured the wind god with nine arrows.

Caring the least for the burning arrows shot by Puloma, the wind god broke the illustrious Danava's heads and soaked their crowns with blood. As a result of this the Daityas looked like the mountain covered with ocher colour.

With the shattering of the kavacas, bones, arms etc, the Danavas started falling on earth appeared like the blossoming trees having been uprooted by the elephants.

From the huge shattered bodies of the Daityas, the stream of blood started flowing which was horrible to look at.

It flowed the spring of blood in the battle ground, enhanced fright in the heart of a cowardly person. The battle growing looked awful with blood of elephants and the horses covering the earth here and there.

The lifeless Yaksas, Raksas, and the flying living beings the earth had been filled. The soldiers, flags, banners, quivers and the chariots had been scattered there in the battle ground.

The elephant decorated with bells were lying dead. Their temples had been tom out, the arrows covered with gold, which were shot by the gods and the Daityas lay there like the poisonous serpents.

The prasas, tomaras, arrows, Saktis, swords, battle-axes, the clubs made of gold, besides musalas, pattisas gold armlets, keyUras, gems, earrings, kavacas, gloves, garlands, beautiful medals, weapons, the Daityas having been killed or wounded without the chariots, besides hundred and thousands of the warriors were lying dead in the battle ground.

At places a large number of banners and the chariots had fallen. Numerous horses, elephants and the chariotees were lying dead. The war between the gods and the Daityas appeared appropriate to their performance.

Thereafter holding the clubs and the musalas in their hands a thousand Daityas of Pauloma race, surrounded the valorous wind-god.

At that point of time lakhs of excellent Danavas, started attacking the wind god, from all the four sides, causing injuries to him. With the arrows having penetrated in the body of the wind god, he appeared wonderfully graceful.

The valorous, string and the great warrior Pavanadeva, killed eight hundred Pauloma warriors, carved the path for himself and uttered a lion's roar aloud.

Even today the vast path is visible in the sky and is known as the Vayuratha. The Siddhas glance at it in the space.

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, а valorous Daitya named Hayagriva, attacked Pusa uttering a lion's roar at the same time.

The Daitya having been filled with rage took up the huge bow decorated with the gold net, cast a glance at Pusa.

No one could ever judge as to when the Daitya, held the arrow in his hand, placed it over the bow, strung the same (and then shot it). No one could visualise the same.

Shooting the arrows on the right and the left, the resplendent bow of the Daitya, becoming circular looked like Astacala.

The sharp arrows shot from his bow, fitted with gold wings, and had been sharpened with the grinder, covered all the directions besides the sun rays.

Thereafter many arrows with knots and gold wings could be spotted in the sky.

Like the mountain peak, the arrows issuing from the bow flew in the sky in lines appeared like the eagles.

The Daitya kept on shooting the arrows which had wings of vultures, sharpened with the grinder, decorated with gold, which could move with great speed besides having sharp tips.

Then the golden arrows shot from the bow started injuring the body of Pusa.

As the fire flies roam about in the sky during the rainy season, similarly the arrows made of gold were scattered in the space and were shining at the same time.

As the clouds bathes the mountains with streams of the rain water, similarly the arrows sharpened over the rocks, with bright tips, appeared like dancing Pusa.

Thereafter, the clouds like pouring water over the mounatain, Hayagrlva, covered Pusa with the arrows shot by him.

At that point of time, all the gods were astonished with the prowess of the Daitya, his strength, his patience, together with that of Pusa.

Then like the fall of rain rising from the ocean, the shower of the arrows could not be distrubed Pusa. He atonce attacked the Daitya in the battle ground.

The deafening twanging sound could be produced from the bow of PUsa. Its back was made of gold. When strung, it turned circular and appeared like the vajra of Indra. (102)

Thereafter the golden arrows shot from the bow of Pusa were scattered in the sky, filling it. At that point of time, with the winged arrows issued by the Pusa, caused a huge garland in the sky.

Thereafter having been injured with the arrows of the bent knots, the net of arrows shot by the Daitya started falling on earth getting scattered.

Then Pusa covered Hayagrlva with the arrows embossed with his name, which were shining like the sun rays, made of the divine gold and were sharpened over the rocks.

Then the valorous enraged Danava, like the burning fire started showering the horrible arrows.

Hayagrlva, then cut off the flag, banners, bow, reins and the yokes of the horses.

Thereafter he, shooting four excellent arrows, killed the horses of his chariot and threw down the charioteer from the chariot.

In the battle Pusa was deprived of his chariot by Hayagrlva. Therefore Pusa getting defeated removed himself from that spot and went to a far off place. He appeared like the one having been saved from the jaws of death. Escaping himself from death, Pusa went to Indra.

Thereaftere a terrific battle between Sambasura and Bhaga started in which both the sides attacked and counter attacked each other.

With this, the eyes of Sambasura, well versed in yoga, became red in anger. The length of his bow was twelve hands and its width was three and a half hands. The sound of his vajra resembled the rumbling sound of vajra. The cord of his bow was quite strong. The bow could accomplish heavy tasks. Stringing the bow Sambasura started shooting the arrows as thick as the axles of the chariot, like the rain.

All the armies of the gods were terrorised by Sambasura, which started shaking like the high waves of the ocean.

Finding the arrival of the Daityas with deformed faces, the lips of Bhaga started fluttering. He therefore wounded the Daitya anxiously with his arrows.

Thereafter Bhaga — the great archer, holding his divine bow in his hand, showering his arrows over the Daityas, showered the rain of arrows over the enemy.

Shooting the arrows continuously, Bhaga atonce reached before the Daitya warrior, as if an elephant faces another elephant or a bull faces an other bull for a fight.

Both the forceful warriors, could carry the burden, holding the bows in their hands started showering arrows at each other which injured both.

In the great battle the intelligent Bhaga and Sambasura started fighting a great war.

Both of them stringing the bows stretehing than upto the ears, shot the curved arrows with knots which shattered the shields of iron into pieces, besides injuring their bodies.

All their limbs were injured and were soaked in blood, but still both of them were anxious to carry on the fight. They were causing deep injuries with the sharp arrows and could not be seen by others.

Then the eyes of Sambasura became red with anger. He turned awful like the god of death, Antaka and Yama. He atonce badly injured Bhaga in the battle ground.

As Garuda captures a huge serpent in its beak, similarly Sambasura tortured Bhaga. The arrows shot by Sambasura started injuring quickly the body of Bhaga, who made the arrows of Sambasura infructuous from the sky itself.

Then Sambasura — the foremost of the asuras shooting the arrows resembling the fire, standing firmly like the mountain surrounded the illustrious god Bhaga with sixty four arrows decorated with gold.

Both of them fought_equally for long, then with the illusion created by Sambasura the sky became invisible.

The sound of the shooting of the arrows, by Sambasura could be heard like the sound resembling vajra.

Then Sambasura killed the horses and the charioteers of Bhaga and then started showering rain of arrows over Bhaga.

The showering of arrows at Bhaga by sambhasura was so sharp that no space of even of two fingers width was left uninjured in the body of Bhaga.

The illusory Sambasura escaped from the powerful divine weapons of Bhaga and fought with him the illusory battle.

The Daitya then making use of his illusions and swiftness, deceived the god Bhaga who kept on showering arrows over his chariot and the horses.

The illustrious Sambasura was well- versed in thousands of illusions, he destroyed the huge army of gods. The arrows shot by him could be seen in the battle ground in hundreds.

Sometimes the asura could be seen falling on the ground unconsceous. Then taking to hundreds of mountains like bodies he started fighting the war.

Again the strong Daitya was found seated over the back of the elephant. In another instant he turned himself into a tiny form of the size of a thumb and another moment he appeared in a gigantic form like a mountain.

The illustrious Daitya could pervade in the sky like the clouds, and in other directions. Then taking to the terrific forms, the asura frightened the army of gods from all the sides. As the deer flee at the sight of a lion, similarly witnessing him all the warriors of the gods fled in panic.

Thereafter the awful Daitya taking to another gigantic form advnaced towards the sky and uttering the loud lion's roar from there, which echoed in all the directions.

Reaching the sky taking to the form of Sammrtaka cloud caused deluge on earth with rain water like Indra pours rain on earth.

Thereafter the most valorous Daitya turned itself into Samvartaka fire, appeared with hundreds of flames and started cheating the gods.

Thereafter in a couple of ghadis (forty four minutes), he took to the form of a huge mountain with high peaks as well as the caves. At that point of time he appeared like a huge mountain with a hundred peaks.

The other gods, Sadhyas and the Visvedevas who shot arrows at him all of them were consumed by the great asura.

While fighting in the battle field, the foremost of the Daityas, named Sambhara, seated in his chariot, then disappeared like the Gandharva city.

All the immensely valorous and famous gods, who could wonderfully fight in the battle, looked at Sariibasura possessing thousands of illusions, with surprise.

Frightened from the Daitya Sambara Bhaga and all the valorous gods, deserting the battle ground, fled away and took refuge with Indra.

Defeating the valorous god Bhaga, Danava king Sambar, went to the place where the fire god was lodged.

The valorous Daitya, getting enraged, chastised fire god speaking harsh words, T shall just now appear as a death for you". Thus speaking he disappeared.

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, the valorous soma (moon) the ruler of the Brahmanas, started destroying the Daitya army using the SItastra.

He was of white complexion like the mountain Kailasa. He was surrounded by the illustrious constellations. He spotting the Daityas resembling Yama holding the danda started killing them.

The strong and resplendent moon god, appeared like Yama appearing at the time of dissolution, kept on wandering in the Daitya army started destroy their chariots and the horses.

The moon god in rage started reducing to ashes the Daitya army as the forest fire appearing in the forest reduces the forest trees to ashes.

He trampled over the chariots, charioteers, elephants, their riders the warriors, and the cavalry warriors, besides the foot soldiers, throwing them over the ground.

As the wind god uproots the trees with his force, similarly, the illustrious moon- god, destroyed all the Danavas, and their vast army with the use of his Sitastra.

His weapons were soaked in enemy blood like the killing of the animals mercilessly by Rudra.

The valorous and illustrious moon god, like the god of death of the time of dissolution, started wandering in the army of the Daityas. He stopped the fleeing Daitya army, and killed the same.

Observing the arrival of the moon god like Yama, all the Daitya warriors felt surprised. Then the moon god who is the remover of darkness, in which ever side he used the Sisirastra, the Daitya armies of that side, became lifeless and fell down over the ground. Getting well protected with his own force, tore apart, the Daitya army.

In the great battle, the moon god, performer of the wonderful deeds, like the Yama with horrible face and killed the Daitya army. He cast a horrible look at the Daityas. Finding him approaching towards the Daityas, those of them (Daityas) with the names of the sun and moon, started showering the arrows and covered the moon god with their arrows.

Thereafter both the gods and the Daityas issued sound from their bows, which echoed in all the directions.

The trumpeting of huge elephants, the neighing horses, the blowing of the conches and the trumpets, produced terrific sound, which echoed in the sky.

Aspiring for victory, being anxious for war, the glorious warriors started bellowing like the bulls in the cowpens, facing the opponents.

Both the armies in the battle ground, shot sharp arrows over the heads of the warriors, which created the sound like the fall the rain of stones.

The place of start of the war, was litered with the turbans, garlands of gold as well as the heads of the warriors.

In just two ghadis (forty four minutes) it was filled with the bodies of the warriors, wounded with arrows, the sereved arms holding bows, the hands decorated with ornaments, other limbs soaked in blood, the bodies covered with kavacas, limbs plastered with sandal paste, the moonlike face with ears adorned with kundalas or ear rings deads bodies of humans and the ear casses of horses and elephants, were scattered in the battle ground.

The gigantic bows were shining like the lightning in clouds. The rumbling sound of the chariots appered like the thundering of the clouds.

The terrific war between the gods and the demons showered the rain of blood, was taking to a horrible form.
