Defeat of Hari and Asvanikumaras

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, thereafter, at the command of Indra, the lord of gods all the armies of the gods, thundering like Bhairava, paunced upon the Daityas.

The entire community of gods was quite awful and invincible. The elephants and the horses had been found there in abundance. The sound of conches and the kettle drums was echoing in the sky. It was difficult to overcome the same. The dust from all sides was falling on the same. The undisturbed ocean of army appeared, wonderful, incredible and surprising. The Daityas, observed the attacking army. As the seashore stops the advance of the ocean, similarly the advance of the army was stopped.

Stopping with force, the army comprising of the horses, chariots and the elephants, the valorous Kujambha took his position in the battle field. In order to stop the ocean of the army of the gods, he stood there with an unshakable mind.

With the use of his club Kujambha stopped the forward movement of the god's army. When so stopped, the army became upset and infructuous.

When the war was so going on, that Asiloma, the Danava king, of the race of Danu, proved like a comet for the gods army. As the unfailing sun provides heat its all, similarly, he in the battle field started harassing the army of the gods."

The excellent chariot of the Danava was quite illustrious like the sun. The glorious Daitya, started showering the arrows over the army of gods like the clouds pouring the rain of water.

The awful and valorous Danava, was teasing with arrows like the shining rays of the sun. He was terrific, cruel, horrible and indomitable. Standing at the start of the army, the influential Daitya started fighting with the gods as if he intended to swallow them.

His arrows were awful, He had a large face. The valorous Danava, mounting over a gigantic elephant was severing the heads of the gods.

Making the army of the gods as his morsel, the arrows of the asura were his fangs. The sword was his tongue, cakra served as the hands, the stretched bow was like his opened mouth, the battle-axes were his nails the sound of the musical instruments like cymbals, was the sound of his thunder. In this way the valorous Asiloma the foremost of the asuras stood in. the battle ground like a tiger.

The Danava looked like the second cloud. The twanging sound of the bow stood for his thunder, the arrows shots by him were like the showers of the rain. His bow itself was like rainbow and the lightning.

The battle was like an awful ocean. His arms, served as the crocodiles. It was quite difficult to cross it. The bow stood for its waves. The circling of the arrows issued from the bow stood like the whirlpools, the clubs and the swords resembled the crocodiles there. It was horrible to look at. The cord of the bow was like the sea shore, with the force of the wind, like the knowledge, the wave were rising and descending. The foot soldiers were the fish in the ocean. The vast ocean had the warriors shouting, thundering and crying.

The terrific Daitya Asiloma, drowned the great warriors, horses, elephants and multitude of chariots, besides the large number of gods, in the ocean of the war.

The illustrious Danava, known as Asiloma could remain stable in the war, and was an excellent warrior of the battle ground. He was always engaged in the war. All the gods witnessed that the lustre of his body resembled the molten gold. Wearing the kavaca, he appeared like the fire in flames, at the time of waging the war.

The Danava, with his lustre was shining like the sun of the noon time. No one from all the Bhutas could have the courage to glance at him.

As the fire burns out the grown dry grass, similarly, the Daitya, was reducing to ashes all the gods with the lustre of his body.

Both of the armies of the gods and the Daityas were thundering aloud. The armies advanced from all the sides and entered into scuffle with one another.

All the soldiers were immensely strong, and powerful. The warriors seated over the elephants, horses and the chariots, using their best wisdom, did not desert the battle field.

The war between the gods and the Daityas was without limitations and thrilling. Because of the excess flow of the blood, the mud was created.

The soldiers of the gods, felt tortured with the fear like the alligators, were unable to know about the directions nor could they understand the various types of weapons shot by the Danavas.

Their minds were confused. They getting upset started killing their soldiers of their own side. They had been so confused that they lost identity, of their own soldiers or those of the enemies.

A warrior held the hair of another warriors in the battle ground, and cut off his head, whose lips were pressed in the teeth.

Holding the weapons in their hands, the soldiers attacked one another with their arms as well as the vajra like fists.

In the severe battle the soldiers of both the sides were engaged in fighting. The terrific war could deprive all the soldiers of their lives, and was like the open gate of heaven for them. In the great battle the cavalrymen attacked the cavalrymen, elephant riders tought with elephant riders, while the foot soldiers fought with the foot soldiers. All of them entered into the limitless war, with the sole purpose of killing the opponent.

The great warriors of the gods, possessing all the prowess, as well as the asuras started killing the opponents, making offerings for their lives.

At this Asiloma was immensely enraged. He took up another great bow and shot at Hari many arrows with the wings of gold.

The Danavas deprived of the kavacas, whose bows had been cut off, with dishevelled hair, started fighting with gods with hands and feet.

At the same time Hari shot a sharp spear at Asiloma in the battle ground, which breaking his bow, threw him on the ground.

The arrows were then destroyed like serpents, fire and poison. With these arrows, the Daitya, injured the sensitive spots of Hari. The Daitya then covered the body of Hari with large size arrows, like the falling of the rain over the mountain.

Thereafter he, again shot a hundred knotted arrows at the Danavas king in the battle ground.

The arrows thus shot by him, with the help of the wind, entered the body of the Demon, as a serpent enters into a mountain. At that point of time, half of each arrow had pierced into the body of the Daitya.

With the shooting of those arrows streams of blood started flowing from all his limbs. At that point of time the great Daitya looked like the Meru mountain from which the streams of ochre were flowing. Again a hundred arrows with curved knots were shot at the Daitya.

Thereafter, he shot in the battle field on Hari, the winged arrows which were dazzling like the sun, beautiful and were terrific like Yama.

The Danava, who performed the terrific deeds, when so shot his arrows at Hari, he suddenly fainted and fell down on the ground.

With the fall of Harideva all the gods felt terrorised. The entire universe with the gods felt disturbed, as if the solar disc had fallen on earth.

All the warriors who surrounded the god Hari, were all killed by the Danava, in the battle ground, besides twenty one thousand warriors of the army of the gods.

Getting resplendent with his victory, Asiloma, looked like a huge mountain. He carrying his huge bow, marched towards his chariot.

Thus in that great war, both Asvinikumdras, with their armies, were fighting with Vrtrasura — the enemy of the gods.

Vrtrasura was holding a sword and a bow. He had arrived in the battle field shedding away the desire to live. The demon reaching before the Asvinikumaras stood unmoved before them.

Then he blew the conch, which thrilled the enemy, issued the dangling sound from the bow, which shook all the living beings.

At that point of time, the Yaksas, Raksas and the gods were thrilled hearing the sound of the blowing of the conch as well as thunder of Vrtrasura.

Thereafter, the Yaksas, Raksasas, holding the tomaras, clubs, swords spears, Saktis and battle axes, looked graceful.

The spears, Saktis, and battle axes shot by the gigantic Yaksas and others were cut off by Vrtrasura, with the spears which were shot with force.

The good looking gods who moved in the sky and the earth, who thundered aloud, were badly injured with the arrows shot by the Daitya Vrtrasura.

The weapons which were shot by the arms of Vrtrasura, cut off or injured the heads of Yaksas and Raksasas.

Thereafter, heavy rain of blood started falling on earth, from the bodies of gods injured with the clubs and the parighas (by the Daitya Vrtrasura).

Covering the enemy with the multitude of the arrows, the terribly valorous Vrtrasura, was seen by all like the sun who covers all by his rays.

Like the sun with sharp rays, harassing all the gods, the valorous Daitya getting enraged injured all with his fatal and sensitive arrows.

Having been tortured by the gods with the arrows, he kept on uttering lion's roar. The gods never found Vrstrasura, falling fainted in the battle ground.

The valorous gods kept on showering shields, swords, clubs, parighas, prasas, tomara, battle-axes, and the spears.

When so harrassed by the gods, the truthful and valorous Vrtrasura was enraged immensely. Then he started shooting the sharp arrows at them.

Having been thus terrorised by the Daitya, their weapons fell down from the hands of the gods. Having been so tortured, the gods started crying.

Feeling panickly from the Daitya — the holder of the strong bow, the gods lay down the arms like clubs, Saktis, spears, tridents, parighas, besides vajra and other weapons, moved to the northern direction.

Vrtrasura with his vast chest, holding the spear, Sakti and a club in his hands, frightening all the mobile and immobile beings engaged himself in war.

One of the two Asvinikumaras known as Nasatya, holding a sword and a trident, rushed towards Vrtrasura, who displayed his prowess in the battle field.

Like the elephant pouring the stream of fluid finding Nasatya — the excellent god, attacking in the battle field, Vrtrasura shot three Vatsadanta arrows at his back.

Then Nasatya also injured Vrtrasura with his arrows. Having been injured with his arrows, the immensely strong great archer, well-versed in the fight with gada, took up a club in his hand.

The clube which was made of the essence of iron was quite strong and horrible. Holding the gada in his hand, the valorous Daitya suddenly arrived before Asvinikumara and attacked him at once with the gada.

Asvini picked up a large, powerful and strong, shining spear in his hand and suddenly threw it oyer Vrtrasura.

Vrtrasura who was well-versed in fight with gada shattered into pieces the spear with the tip of the gada and suddently reached before Asvinikumara, as Garuda reaches before a serpent.

The valorous Vrtrasura, taking a long jump from the space, shot the huge gada, rotating it over Nasatya.

Having been injured with the gada, Nasatya descending his excellent spear, suddenly fled the place and reached the place of Indra, where he was fighting.

Defeating the valorous Asvi in the battle, having been embraced with victory, Vrtrasura stood there quite attentive in the battle field.

Here ends chapter — 57, of Bhavisya Parva of the Harivamsa Purana, a supplement of the epic of Mahabharata, relating to the defeat of god Hari and Asvanikumara. (Vrs. 1-69. P.T. = 12,236)
