War between the gods and the asuras





Vaishampayana said — О king both the armies of Daityas and the gods fought the battle repeatedly. The sounds of the musical instruments like gomukhas, trumpets, drums, cymbals, and big drums were sounded, which caused tumultuous noise. The musical instruments disturbed all the three lokas with their sound.

The terrific and frightened war-yajnas were performed, which resulted in the achieving of the heaven. In that battle field loud lion's roars and cries were created which was desirable for the valorous people.

Prahlada — the chief of the Daityas was the leader of the Yajna. Virocana his son was the Brahmana priest reciting the mantras.

Namuci was the performer of homa, and Vrtrasura was the recitor of the mantras. In the said Yajna the Daityas were reciting the mantras.

Banasura — who followed his father in prowess, and was more valorous than his father, was the performer of the sacrifice. He always remained present in the battle ground.

The weapons which were well utilised there in war like Aindra, Pasupata, Brahma and the invicible sthunakarna served as the mantras.

Mayasura who was terrific for the enemy stood there as the reciter of Sama-gdna. The foremost of the Daitya warrior uttering the lion's roar started shattering the army of gods.

The fully competent, illustrious Bali the great asura, himself perfomed the japam as well as homa officiated as Brahma.

Inflamed with the fuel of enmity, the huge fire of war appeared there. Both the asuras and the gods started pouring the offerings in the fire of war. The offerings were being made for the satisfaction of lord Visnu.

The deafening sound of the blowing of the conches, the sound of the trumpets, represented the declaration of subra- manyam.

The great asuras named Bala, Balaka and Paloma, performing all the rites correctly the session was compeleted.

In the extremely rewarding yajna of the war, the vast lines of blood, with spotted Isadanda, were imagined.

The soma — kalasas were represented by karnnis, nalikas, naraca (arrows) vatsadanta, upabrmhika, tomaras and the wonderful bows.

The bones were skulls in this case, the head was Purodas, while the terrific blood served as the ghee, which was offered in the yajna.

The line of arrows, the fuel and the vast clubs served as perephery. Hayagriva, Asiloma, Rahu, Kesl, Virocana, Jambha, the valorous Kujambha, besides the strong vipracitti, were the members of the yajna.

The arrows were thick like the axles of the chariots, served as the ladles in the yajna. The ends of the bows as well as the strings of the bow served as the ladles of the yajna.

Vrsaparva functioned as an assistant to the performer of the yajna while the king Bali was the yajamana who received diksa and the vast army was his wife.

The valorous Sambara the son of Diti, performed the Samitra rite of the yajna.

In the forms of the daksinas of the yajna, kalanemi the huge asura was present, who was popular as fire in the Yajna of his master Bali.

With the lifeless bodies of the gods, there, the prestige of the demons was on increase.

In the war — yajna, the blood of the gods drunk by the Daityas represented the consumption of soma by the Daityas, which they drank making all the noise.

After the great asura become victorious over the gods, then at the conclusion of the yajna, there would be the ceremonial bath, there is no doubt about it.

The gigantic asuras who could give away huge sums of daksina were the performers of Yajna, well versed in the Vedas, were noble and strong. All of them had engaged themselves in the war, without caring for their own lives.

All of them collected there in order to usurp the kingdom of the three worlds had received diksa for the yajna of war. All of them were clad in the skins of the black bucks. All of them had been performing vrata wearing the mekhala or waist band of munja (red) grass.

All of them were engaged in the waging of war, with one and the same purpose. All of them had the desire to win the Idngdom of the three worlds. Carrying several types of weapons in their hands they rushed here and other with great speed. The gods, Danavas and Daityas created huge noise in the battle ground.

Then by uttering of lion's roars by the warriors, shouting aloud, thunduring, the trumpeting of the elephants, the rumbling sound of the chariot wheels, created deafeting sound in the battle ground.

The grim sound of the kettle drums, the neighing of horses, braying of donkeys, the thundering sound of the Danavas, the sound of their cries, becoming restless, created enormous sound.

The vast armies of Danavas and the gods equipped with weapons, performing awfully in the battle ground, were shining.

At that point of time, the elephants decorated with gold besides chariots, were shining like the clouds with lightning and looked graceful.

The armies carried separately the swords, daggers, clubs, sharp spears, Saktis and battle axes, which were shining and looked quite pleasent.

Hundreds and thousands of chariots with different designs, the upper parts of which had been made of gold and they appeared like the burning flames.

Like the shining Sun, the gold kavacas decorated the warriors of Danavas and the gods appeared like the stars in the sky.

Wearing gloves in their hands and carrying the quivers over their backs, the gods having the vast eyes like those of bulls, reaching the starting point of the army, carrying the wonderful weapons, looked quite graceful.

The warriors struggling in the battle ground carrying multi coloured banners, were fluttering with the blowing of the wind.

The sun god was made the flags, ornaments, costumes and kavacas to shine with its rays.

All the foot soldiers of both the sides, who were numerous in number, while walking raised the dust from their feet resembling the silken cloth, had covered all the directions.

All the warriors had been carrying the divine weapons. The weapons of all of them were shining. The soldiers of one side did not allow the soldiers of the opposite side to advance.

The gods and the Ddnavas, had the tall bodies like the mountain peaks, while standing in the battle ground, attacked one another and kept on fighting in a wonderful manner.

Becoming invincible with the rise of the wings, when the warriors were using the sharp arrows, mudgaras, musalas, spears, weapons with iron points, wooden mortar, lightining like weapon, vajra, sword, the trees etc. against their opponents, displaying the wonderful prowess, then Banasura lifted up his bow to kill Savitra.

He covered Savita — the excellent god with the shooting of his arrows, who got inflamed like the ghee poured into the fire.

The vast army of the gods resembled the vast ocean, and Banasura started drying it with his arrows in the same way as the sun dries up the ocean.

Then immensely forceful Maruta named Savitra, shot an excellent sakti over Banasura, the son of Bali as Indra had attacked a mountain with vajra.

But the wonder performer Banasura, finding the flaming Sakti advancing towards him like a comet, broke it into two pieces.

With the damaging of the Sakti, Savitra, the foremost of the gods, took a sword prepared by Visvakarma in his hand which resembled the forest fire and the poisonous serpent. Its blade was quite sharp and strong. The spotless and vast sword besides being sharp was bright like the moon.

With the resplendent sword held in his hand the illstrious Savitra stood in the battle field, in front of Banasura.

The eyes of Savitra were red and had a gigantic body. Finding him as standing before him, Banasura the son of Bali, attacked him uttering a lion's roar.

Thereafter he shot arrows shining like the sun rays, sharp like the sword, and poisonous like the serpents. These arrows were shot by Banasura.

The arrows had the wings of gold. The tips of the arrows were shining. They rushed with great force and were well decorated. Banasura placed аЦ the arrows over the bow, stretched the cord of the bow upto the ears and started shooting them on all the sides.

They were shining like the fire, were shot from the bow, which covered Savitra in the same way as the clouds cover the Kailasa mountain.

After having been so covered by the weapons shot by Banasura, the son of Bali Savitra — the excellent god, became disintersted in war and left the place with his flag.

Defeating Savitra, Banasura was delighted. Then he carrying the terrific bow, advanced towards the chariot of Indra.

On the other hand the valorous, Danava named Bala, carrying a gigantic and terrific club in his hand struck it over the head of a Vasu named Dhurva.

At that point of time with the strike of club the beautiful kavaca of Dhruva was shattred to pieces from this shoulders.

Then all the remaining Vasus using the divine weapons in the battle field covered the Danava in such a way as the sun is covered by the clouds.

Then the Danava Bala was trampled upon by the weapons of the vasus, who forcibly descended from his chariot.

The great asura then weilding the club, shot it over the enemies, which forced all the gods to flee to all the directions.

As the vajra shot by Indra, creates huge rumbling sound, while advancing, similarly the club also did so with the thundering sound produced by the club, the gods were shaken and all the gods jumped from their chariot and fled away.

Thereafter Bala started showering arrows the illustrious army of the gods thundering like the clouds, from all the four sides.

The immesely illustrious and great asuras started wandering with arrows, spears, Vatsadantas, and Silimukha type of arrows, repeatedly.

A Daityai named Balaka, holding a club in his hand and with a deformed face appeared like the god of death. He was shining like the sun or lightning or the fire.

The said Daitya was advancing consuming the arrows shot by the army of gods. Then he rushed towards them. He appeared forceful like an ocean.

As the mountains shatter the force of the oceanic water, similarly the Daitya Bala with his, thunder, echoeing in all the directions thundered aloud and with his prowess he stopped the advancement of the gods.

As the wind uproots the trees, with its force, similarly the demon named Samudra, subjugating all the gods with his force, started fighting with two Vasus known by the names of Anila.

Then Pramtapa and Anila, who could subjugate the enemies, started showering the rain of arrows, like the rain falling from the cloud. But the Daitya, cut off the arrows shot by the gods in the mid — air.

Their tolerance could not be tolerated by Dhruva. Therefore he attacked on him. Then both warriors shooting the arrows individually, started injuring each other.

Both the gods and the Daityas were quite strong, born in high race and were quite glorious. As the two tigers attack each other with their nails and the two elephants attack each other with tusks, similarly both fo them started injuring each other with their Saktis and arrows. Shooting the arrows they injured the limbs of each other.

Both of them were valorous, therefore, both of them remaining in the battle field stopped the advancement of each other while attacking, moving by different routes and taking different positions.

Thereafter both the arrogant warriors, getting enraged started striking each other with mudgaras. Both of them attacked each other with swords and shields, then they with bows and arrows destroying them they stood there like the two mountains and started the wrestling fight.

Both of them had broad chests and long arms. Both of them were quite efficient in the wrestling fight. Therefore they fought with each other, with their arms resembling the thick iron parighas.

With the striking with both the arms they applied the methods of subjugation and holding up. At that time terrific thundering sound was produced like the striking of two mountains.

As the two elephants attack with their tusks and the two bulls fight with their horns, similarly both of them, getting enraged fought for two ghadis pulling and pushing each other.

Thereafter Vasu — god known by the name of Blak, getting defeated rushed towards the eastern direction getting frightened.
