Fight of other gods and the Daitya warriors

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, in the same great war, Sadhyadeva named Ranaji who was the foremost of the gods was fighting with the Daitya Ekacakra.

The valorous Ranaji covering path of the chariot thundering aloud, shot the rain of arrows at the chariot of Ekacakra.

The valorous asura fighting with the huge pattisas and spears, used bhusundis as well.

The rain of clubs, Saktis and the spears was speads in the army of gods. It was different for the mobile and immobile livings beings to manage the situation.

In the battlegrounde, the gods and the asuras took to facing one another. They looked like the high mountains. All of them were quite valorous and strong.

Ekacakra, the foremost of the Daityas, resembled Hiranyakasipu. His gigantic chariot was driven by a hundred horses.

With the striking of the hoofs of the horses, the resembling sound of the chariot wheels, with the shooting of the arrows by Ekacakra, hundreds of gods were destroyed.

Getting enraged Ranaji using the fast moving curved knotted arrows, shattered hundreds and thousands of Daityas.

The gods shooting their sharp arrows, killed the numerous, Danavas in the battle besides their chariots, elephants and horses.

Obseving the terrific destruction of the Danavas, the Daitya holding the best of weapons in their hands, shedding away the care for their lives, returned from that place.

The Daityas who faced the enemy in the war and who could attack the enemy army with their sharp arrows, badly wounded the gods standing in all the directions.

Observing this the longarmed Ranaji made use of the burning weapons named Mathana over them.

Then the sharp spears emerging out of it and other weapons, were cut off by Ekacakra with his weapons.

Then Ekacakra — the great asura shattered all the weapons with his spear and wounded Sadhyadeva named Ranaji, with the shooting of ten sharp arrow.

The Daitya, using his weapons, neutralised the force of the weapons of the Sadhyadeva, and badly wounded the warriors who were following him.

The wounded limbs of the warriors, were flowing blood like the rain water flows from the mountain peaks during the rainy season.

The arrows which moved straight, the touch of which was unbearable like vajra, were shot by the Daityas at the gods which tortured them, who felt frightened.

Then Ekacakra, while seated in his own chariot that was driven by the elephants were advancing, the sound of the ornaments of whom could be heard. The trumpeting of the elephants, put to shame the thundering water of the ocean. The intoxicated elephants were well decorated and mahautas were seated over them. The elephants were born in high race and possessed enormous strength and prowess. They could kill the competing elephants. They were trained in the roaring of the elephants and valorous like the elephant Airavata in the battle ground. Then the Daitya killed all the elephants of gods like the demon Gajasura.

The gigantic elephants were issuing fluid from the neck, trunk and temples. They had the terrific force. They trumpeted like the thundering of the clouds. They looked like the high mountains.

The number of the divine elephants was nearly a thousand. All of them were decorated with gold ornaments. Their backs were covered with cloth studded with nets of gold as a result of which they looked like the rising sun.

The valorous Ekacakra, holding a gada in his hand, killed the gigantic elephants as the wind shatters the clouds.

The great asura who shattered the army of elephants, using his club killing all the elephants and cast his glance over the horses.

The colour of some of the horses was green like parrot, some of them were grey like the deer, some of the horses were of the colour of the peacocks, while the colours of some of them resembled the pigeons and the swans.

The eyes of some of them were like jasmine flowers, while some of them had the deformed eyes. The colours of some of the horses resembled the herons. All of them had the speed of the mind. Ekacakra, who possessed enormous prowess and terrific strength, the long armed Daitya destroyed the cavalry of the gods with the use of his gada.

On the other hand Ranaji of unthinkable strength, observing the Daityas, who were inimical to the gods, discarded all of them and was disinterested in the war.

The long armed Ranaji who was well versed in waging the war, whose entire army had been destroyed, drove his chariot towards Indra.

Ekacakra — the Daitya king, on the other hand destroying thirty lakhs of charioteers, stood in the battle ground, like the flame of the fire without smoke.

In the same battle ground, the Daitya named Bala, who was pround of his strength, started fighting with Rudra, Mrgavyadha, who was invicible.

The great courtier of Rudradeva, known as Mrgavyadha, was illustrious like the fire in flames with the pouring of the ghee. Observing Bala — the Daitya, at once arrived there while jumping and dancing.

Some of the commanders, arrived mounted over the intoxicated elephants, some of them mounted over the divine chariots, while other arrived riding over the horses. All of them were shining like the fire and were equipped with the sharp arrows as well as other weapons.

Thereafter all the warriors spotted the great asura like the rising sun resplendent with the rays.

Finding the great Daitya standing in the battle ground possessing great force, great spirit, great prowess, enormous wisdom, enormous enthusiasm, gigantic body, with his excellent warriors taking their position in all the directions, equipped with all the weapons, ponced upon him.

Mrgavyadha, shot the sharp iron arrows over the mountain like vast head of the Daitya, which had been sharpened over the grinder.

Seven arrows of Mrgavyadha entered into the head of the Daitya. Having been hurt with those arrows, the valorous Bala cried aloud which echoed in all the directions and he flew in the sky.

Mrgavyadha, then followed the Daitya mounted over the chariot, holding his bow, with delight.

As the cloud getting ready to pour rain in the rainy season, covers the mountain with the pouring of rain, similarly Mrgavyadha, shooting the arrows from the sky, covered the asura from all the sides.

Having been wounded by the Mrgavyadha, the Danava thundered aloud in the sky itself.

Thereafter the immensely forceful Danava suddenly took a long jump, reached the chariot of Mrgavyadha, like a mountain driven with the force of wind.

By so doing, the Daitya, broke the flag pole and the yoke of the chariot. The chariot was thus shattered completely. The valorous Mrgavyadha, leaving the chariot stood on the ground.

Finding Rudra without a chariot, his warriors stood in the sky carrying mudgaras. Their terrific eyes were red in anger.

All of them then lifted up Balasura with force in the sky, and as the tree is cut with the axes, they started wounding him with the terrific mudgaras.

But Balasura was valorous like Garuda. He removing the force of the forceful warriors, again jumped over the earth.

He then uprooted a huge tree with long branches and attacked the warriors of Mrgavyadha in the battle ground.

The warriors of Mrgavyadha badly injured the body of Balasura as a result of which the Daitya Balasura, with his body soaked in blood, looked like the rising sun.

Thereafter the Danavaraja Bala, uprooted a huge mountain with trees, serpents and deer, and threw at the opposite army.

With the destroying of the great army formation of the god’s warriors, the valorous asura, destroyed the rest of the army of gods.

As Samvartaka Yama destroyed all the people at the time of dissolution, similarly, the Danava destroyed horses in comflict with the horses, chariots with chariots and the foot soldiers with the foot soldiers.

The ground was litred with the killed horses, elephants and the huge chariots with broken axles. The access to the place was obstructed from all the sides.

Thus Balasura and the valorous Mrgavyadha, were equating each other in the battle field like the two intoxicated elephants with the fluids flowing from their temples.

Vaishampayana said — О Janamejaya, then the Rudra Ajaikapada who is well known for his anger, and was like the sound Rudra, fought with Rahu.

The battle between the warriors desirous of victory, was terrific, tumultuous, thrilling and horrible.

A difficult stream of blood of the gods and the demons started flowing in the battle ground, which carried in it several of the dead bodies. The hair of humans appeared like the grass and moss in it.

The form of powerful Rudradeva was quite awful. He getting enraged, attacked the hundred mouthed Rahu, quite forcely.

Rudradeva in anger, issuing the arrows with his bow in the battle field destroyed the golden chariots of astonishing design, the horses, together with the charioteer of the hundred faced Daitya.

One of his enthusiastic valorous warrior, with the force of his arrows, wounded the demon in his chest.

When the body of the Rdhu was so badly wounded, by the warriors of Rudra, then Rahu, the foremost of the Danavas, got fainted in anger. He at once reduced to pieces the approaching chariot of Rudradeva by adminishing a slap. As the sun heats the mountain peak with its rays, similarly the Danavas started causing pain to Rudradeva with a wounded body.

When the prominent Danavas were killed at the hands of Rudradeva, then Rudra — the great asura started killing the warriors of Rudradeva.

Pouring the rain of arrows, the Danava with an awful vision, was wounded by Rudradeva with the arrows of covered knots.

In the thrilling battle which was going on, the big streams of blood started flowing.

Then Rudradeva shattered Rahu having black complexion like the coal, with his arrows as the sun heats up the peaks of the Meru mountain, with its rays.

The prominent Danavas who could take to any form at will and had bodies like the mountains, were killed and still the thrilling war was goin on, the wounded Daityas looked like the blossoming Plasa trees.

At that point of time, when the tumultous sound of kettledrums, cynubuls, panavas, was joined with the sound of conches and the Veena, it appeared quite strange.

The Daityas and the gods were crying there getting wounded and their cries were quite pathetic.

The dust from the ground was raised with the hoofs of the galloping horses and the wheels of the chariots, obstructed the path of the struggling warriors.

The ground was adorned there with the offerings of the weapons. The mud of flesh and blood had frozen there and it was difficult to look at it, what to speak of walking there in the battle field.

The battle ground was litred with the broken swords gadas, Saktis, tomaras and pattisas, besides the broken charaiots the damaged instruments of war, the killed elephants, the gods, Danavas, the broken chariot wheels, axles, yokes and the weapons. Then the battle ground was infested with the flesh eating carnivarous. The headless trunks were tossing every where in the battle ground.

The gods and Daityas, desirous of winning the war fought with inimical minds, their attacks on one another were quite terrific.

The warriors joining the battle, never deserted the battle. Mahatma Ajaikapada and valorous Rahu, were also placed in the same situation. When they attacked each other in anger, the tumultuous noise, the pathetic cries like those of the time of dissolution, resembled the thunder of the ocean, were heard.

There was an illustrious Rudra, known by the name of Sudhumraksa was a great MunUvara or an ascetic. He held Sakti, club, parigha and the spear as his attributes. He making use of his Sakti, wounded the demon Kesi — the Daitya.

The loving Ghora Mahaparsada of Rudradeva, carrying various types of arms, having terrible eyes, and possessing enormous prowess, who was dear to Rudradeva, arrived there.

The Daitya known as Kesi was adorned with the ear-rings made of the molten gold and appeared graceful. The invicible Daitya, surrounded by the Daitya warriors, fought the war mounted over the chariot.

He could display the best of prowess and the strength in the battle ground. At the time when he was engaged in the battle field the flames of fire were emitting from his mouth, which way spread in far and wide.

His shoulders resembled those of the lion or the bulls. He had the strength of a lion. His lion's roar resembled the thundering of the clouds and the sound of the cymbals.

The Daitya was surrounded by the other Daityas, when jumped in the battle ground, he uttered a loud lion's roar, which could disturb even the heaven.

The roar so uttered by him, the vast army of the gods, felt panicky but still the warriors stood there bravely throwing the trees and the mountains or the huge stones.

The terrific war between the gods and the Daityas, was quite frightening for the world.

The terrific war was being fought bythe gods and the Danavas, without caring for their lives. In the great ocean of war the struggle of both the sides was quite thrilling.

The warriors were quite strong, and of gigantic size like the mountains. They were well-versed in the use of all the arms. All of them getting equipped with all the arms, got ready for the waging of the war. Both the gods and asuras were desirous of killing their opponents.

Thundering aloud in the battle ground, resembled the thundering of the great clouds, which could shake all the mobile and immobile beings of the world.

The dust of red colour raised by the crowds of the Daityas and the gods, was spread everywhere; which appeared quite horrible and obstructed all the ten directions.

The dust of many colours like red, yellow, and white etc. (was blowing with the strong wind) and nothing was visible to the warriors.

At that point of time, neither the flag was visible nor the banners, neither the kavacas nor the horses. The weapons, the chariots or the charioteers were also not visible.

The sound of the warriors in conflict with one another was echoeing everywhere. Because of the dust storm, none of the figures could be seen.

In the uproarious war, the enraged Danavas attacked even over the Danavas and the gods started fighting with the gods.

The gods and the asuras started killing warriors of their own sides. The blood that flowed from the warriors of both sides soaked the earth.

Thereafter, the blowing dust storm, settled down on earth with the flowing of the blood. The ground was litred with lakhs of dead bodies.

The gods and the Danavas, fought the war, using the spears, Saktis, gadas, swords, tomaras in the battle.

The Danavas attacked the Rudras having the arms like parighas, who attacked with parighas, with the weapons.

The warriors of Rudra too attacked the Daityas uprooting the huge trees, gigantic stone slabs, besides using the illuShrious weapons.

In the mean time the enraged Danava KesI, the foremost of the Danavas, getting enraged took to a terrific form in the battle ground, delighted the warriors of his own side. He getting immusely enraged, taking to horrible form, attacked the warriors of Rudra with vajra.

The intelligent Daitya killed all the great warriors, using the divine vajra.

The warriors of Rudra were wounded with vajra and started wandering in roundels. Those of the warriors whose trees had fallen, fell down with the striking of the vajra.

In this way the battle fought between Rudra and KesI, was horrible and thrilling and looked wonderful.

Here ends chapter — 58, of Bhavisya Parva, of the Harivamsa Parana - supplement of epic of Mahabharata, relating to the fight of other gods and other Daitya warriors. (Vrs. 1-101, P.T. = 12,337)
